• BIRTHDAY GIRLS: Robyn and Lana McKeon will be celebrating their first and second official birth-days on February 29th.
DUBLIN Bus has defended its decision to abolish theNumber 19 route, which has led to some Northside res-idents claiming they’ve been left isolated and abandoned.
The company insists that itprovided adequate notice andalternative transport options tothose affected by the move butthis has done little to appease a
campaign group calling forthe bus route to be reinstated.
The popular bus, which
had been serving the area foralmost 50 years, was abolishedlast summer sparking a mas-sive campaign from manycommuters in Finglas andGlasnevin.
Mary Devoy (86) of Grif-fith Road explained how shehas spent hundreds of eurotravelling by taxi to the War-farin Clinic in the Mater Hos-pital since the route wasabolished.
“The loss of the 19 wascrippling for me personally,”she told Northside People.
“Now I have to walk at
least 20 minutes to get to thenearest shop which isn’t easyat my age.
“I was able to go any-where with the 19 but now Ifeel abandoned and isolated.
“I have to pay e20 get ataxi to the Warfarin Clinicnow which is costing a for-tune and the other day I paide5 to get a taxi to the localshop.
“It’s an absolute disgrace.I’m living here 50 years andI’ve always been able to usepublic transport until now.”
COMING only every four years February 29 is a special daybut it’s the date of a really extraordinary celebration for theMcKeown family in Clonsilla.
In an amazing coincidencesisters Lana and Robyn wereboth born on the leap yeardate, but they’re not twins. In
fact they were born four yearsapart.

● SISTER ACT: Lana is pictured giving baby Robyn a kiss shortly after her birth four years ago.
Double celebrationfor little leaplings
contd from page 1For both girls, it’s a special occasion made
even more momentous because they’ll be at-tending a special party in the Mansion Housewith fellow leapling, Lord Mayor AndrewMontague.
“Lana knows by now that she has a specialbirthday that only comes around officially onceevery four years,” explained mum SuzanneMcKeown.
“Although, I think at this stage she is get-ting a bit fed up with having to share her birth-day with her younger sister. She wants Robynto just go away and get her own birthday.
“But Robyn, like most other four-year-olds,doesn’t really understand the significance of aLeap Year. I think she thinks that all sisters havetheir birthday together.”
Suzanne was adamant that she wasn’tgoing to make it a hat-trick this Leap Year bygiving birth to another child on February 29.
“Oh God no, I wouldn’t be going again un-less I was guaranteed to be getting a big chunkof money for it,” she laughed.
“For us one child for each parent to holdwalking down the street is enough to handle.”
Despite their shared birthdays both Lanaand Robyn made unexpected appearances inthe labour room four and eight years ago.
“Lana was three days over and was bornon February 29,” Suzanne recalled.
“Robyn was due in early March and I pur-posely didn’t want her to be born on the sameday but mother nature had her own ideas.”
Last year, Suzanne, her husband Martin
and their two daughters celebrated their unoffi-cial birthdays in EuroDisney. This year theywill spend it playing musical chairs while eatingRice Krispie buns in the Mansion House withthe Lord Mayor and other little leaplings.
“It’ll be great and we’re really looking for-ward to it,” Suzanne told Northside People.
“Although, we’ve had to do some reorgan-ising as Lana was double booked. What are thechances?
“She was due to have her first confessionin preparation for her Communion this year onthe night of the 29th but we’ve had to change itso that now she’ll have her confession with an-other school a few days later.”
The McKeown girls aren’t the only oneslooking forward to this Wednesday as LordMayor Andrew Montague is preparing for his11th official birthday.
“To be honest, it’s really nice having yourbirthday on February 29,” he told NorthsidePeople.
“And I’m delighted to be able to be in theposition to open the Mansion House to otherpeople who share their birthday on the sameday.
“We’re hoping to have 29 children andadults who have their birthday on a leap yearand we’re going to have as much fun as possi-ble with Rice Krispie cakes, musical chairs andother games.
“No doubt I’ll have to wear a badge for an11-year-old as is my official age.”
The celebrations kick off at 6pm in theMansion House.
Bus route changedefended
contd from page 1Geraldine Gough of the Save the
Number 19 campaign said the loss of thebus has caused chaos for those who de-pended on it to get to work, college, school and to and from the city centreand the southside.
“People have been left stranded,” shestated.
“I know of parents whose work isbeing affected by having to drop and col-lect their children from school.
“The elderly people are afraid of get-ting lost if they take a bus that’s unfamil-iar to them.
“We simply cannot understand whythey abolished the route which was al-ways so popular.”
She added: “We have to get it back.We just can’t conduct our lives or haveany quality of life without it. It’s a terri-bly sad situation when people have to geta taxi to go to church or to the hospital.”
A spokesperson for Dublin Bus saidthe decision to abolish the Number 19was taken following a review of its serv-ices, a public consultation process in re-
lation to the changes to the buses servingFinglas East, Glasnevin and Drumcon-dra and three public information road-shows.
“During this consultation period,Dublin Bus encouraged and welcomedfeedback from the public and all feedbackwas reviewed and considered when de-signing the final proposal for services inthe area,” a spokesperson stated.
“I can confirm that revisions weremade to the proposals following consul-tation and then sent to the NTA for theirapproval.”
The spokesperson stated that the in-troduction of service revisions was alsoadvertised in local and national newspa-pers and a door drop campaign was car-ried out.
“On August 28, 2011, Route 83 andRoute 19 were amalgamated and re-named Route 83,” said the Dublin Busspokesperson.
“The high frequency, cross city Route83 operates from Harristown via FinglasEast (Jamestown Road, Sycamore Roadand Ballygall Road), Tolka Estate Road,
Glasnevin Hill, Botanic Gardens, Phibs-boro, Church Street and the North/SouthQuays, O’Connell Bridge, D’Olier Street,College Green, George’s Street, AungierStreet and Rathmines to Crumlin.
“Route 83 has a peak frequency of 10minutes and an off peak frequency ofevery 15 minutes on weekdays, every 15minutes on Saturday and every 20 min-utes on Sunday.”
The company also described how theformer Number 19a was renamed Route9 and runs every 15 to 20 minutesthrough Beneavin Road, Glasnevin Av-enue, St Mobhi Road, Phibsboro toO’Connell Street and South CircularRoad.
“The routings of Route 83 and Route9 provide the Finglas/Glasnevin areawith a comprehensive bus service withfull cross city options available,” a DublinBus spokesperson stated.
“Following the successful implemen-tation of the revised Routes 9 and 83 anda post implementation review, DublinBus is working on proposals for minor re-visions to the current network.”

A NORTHSIDE politician whoattended a disadvantaged schoolin his youth has welcomed lastweek’s revised teacher allocationsto DEIS schools.
Dublin North West TD, John Lyons(Lab) described the decision as “a clearcommitment to tackling educational dis-advantage”.
“As a former pupil of a DEIS schooland from knowing family and friendswhose kids attend DEIS schools, thiswas a very important issue for me,” hesaid.
“I met with the minister on a numberof occasions about this and I made thepoint that the extra supports DEISschools receive make a huge difference inareas such as literacy and numeracy.
“The Minister took on board my con-cerns and those expressed to me by manyparents and school staff in the area.”
Deputy Lyons said the decision toprotect the legacy posts and to allocateadditional learning support to DEISband 1 schools under the General Allo-cation Model recognised the concentra-tion of need that exists in DEIS schoolsand their requirement for extra teachingsupports.
“I have said many times that we haveto ensure that children from disadvan-taged areas have the supports they needto compete on a level playing field in ed-ucation,” he continued. “This decisionshows this Government's clear commit-ment to tackling educational disadvan-tage.
“I am very pleased with the outcomeof this review for schools in Dublin
North West and I will continue to workwith the Minister to ensure all childrenhave the opportunity to fulfil their edu-cational potential.”
Dublin West TD Patrick Nulty(Lab) also welcomed the decision to re-store over 200 posts at primary level inDEIS Band 1 and 2 schools.
“Tremendous credit is due to teach-ers and parents in affected schools whomobilised a massive campaign againstthese cuts,” he said. “We must makesure our most vulnerable children arenot forced to pay the price for the eco-nomic crisis.
“Lessons must be learned from thisdebacle and assurances given by theDepartment of Education that cuts ofthis nature will not be proposed in fu-ture.”
However Deputy Nulty expressedhis disappointment at the decision toproceed with cuts to DEIS secondaryschools and a further reduction in thecapitation grant to schools.

Landscape architect withBallymun Regeneration Ltd(BRL), Dorothea Burger, de-scribed Poppintree Park as a“safe, high quality regionalpark.”
“It’s a destination for posi-tive community activities and
not just a through shortcut,”she continued.
“We provided a new play-ground for 3-16-year-olds thatserves a wide area of northwest Dublin and provides ahigh level of inclusion and ac-cessibility for children of allages, abilities and back-grounds.”
The park includes waterfeatures and attenuation facili-ties that help reduce localflooding. The introduction of
wildflower meadows, nativehedging and tree plantingalong with a pond and wetlandarea has helped increase biodi-versity in the park.
A native tree trail was putin place by council staff andthe park’s main avenue acts asan ‘organising axis’.
“It’s easy to follow, pro-moting greater use and secu-rity as well as providingenjoyment for all users andbringing nature to residents,”explained Ms Burger.

Youth club praised for fundraising effortsMEMBERS of a local youth club inDublin 15 were so inspired by thebraveness of a pal with Cystic Fibrosisthat they got together and raisede1,000 for a charity dedicated to help-ing others with the condition.
The fundraising efforts began last yearafter the young people of Foroige's Mar-shampla Leadership group, which is part ofthe Huntstown Community Youth Project, contacted local secondary schools to pro-mote awareness about Cystic Fibrosis, which primarily affects the lungs and diges-tive system of sufferers.
This peer education initiative was donein Coolmine Community School and Hart-stown/Huntstown Community School in
Dublin 15 where the group informed stu-dents that the genetic condition affects onein 19 people in Ireland, making it Ireland'sbiggest inherited disease.
The Marshampla Leadership groupalso initiated an art competition in theschools under three themes - music, heroesand what makes me happy. The purpose ofthe competition was to encourage peoplenot to dwell on the genetic disease but tohighlight the fact that people with CF canenjoy a full life and be all that they can be.
Over 70 students from both schoolstook part in the competition and 12 were se-lected to produce a beautiful 2012 calendarthat was kindly sponsored by the schools.
The group also organised a musicalconcert for young people last November
and between sales of tickets and calendarsthey managed to raise an impressivee1,000.
Fundraising manager of Cystic FibrosisAssociation of Ireland, Martin Cahill, de-scribed the quality of the calendar as “oneof the best I have seen” when he com-mended the young fundraisers for their ini-tiative.
“The money raised is a testament ofhard work and excellent leadership quali-ties,” he said.
Local youth officer, JK Onwumereh, said that he was proud of the members ofthe group.
“There might be other fundraising ini-tiatives in the future that will benefit the or-ganisation,” he added.

So whether you decide to opt for or-thodontics, cosmetic dentistry or children’s dentistry, you’ll be in the hands of highly-trained professionals.
Even the cleanest, shiniest teeth can sometimes be un-even, misaligned or prominent. It’s never too late to havethe smile you always wanted through the use of virtuallyinvisible braces or a range of cosmetic dentistry options.
Our Prosthodontist is a dentist specialising in restoringstained, chipped, missing or worn teeth using a variety ofstate-of-the-art methods including tooth whitening, ve-neers, crowns, bridges or even implant-supported teeth.
He will tailor treatment plans to address your dental
problems, improve the health and comfort of your teeth, and give you an attractive, long-lasting smile.
Both orthodontists in the practice believe in deliveringthe highest standard of clinical care and are the leadingproviders of Incognito invisible braces in Dublin.
Early assessment and preventative treatments can helpavoid crooked adult teeth. The orthodontists at Castle-knock recommend having your child assessed at eightyears of age to allow them plan the very best possibletreatment.
“Early assessment at this optimal stage of growth anddevelopment is a window of opportunity to give yourchild the very best treatment possible, which will result in:
a) A beautiful broad smileb) A balanced facial profile optimal support for the lips,
which will support long term facial appearance. c) Possibly avoid the need to extract permanent teeth”This is the philosophy of both Orthodontists at Castle-
knock Orthodontics.“It’s better for children who need orthodontic treat-
ment to get started with braces at the age of ten or eleven, before they go to secondary school.”
“The right orthodontic treatment will give your childan attractive smile, which is a wonderful asset for the restof their lives to boost their self-confidence and benefitboth their social and career success.”
A happy, healthy smile for life is our aim for all our pa-tients. Unfortunately dental decay is very common inyoung children. However early visits to the dentist can en-sure that parents can put some simple measures in placeat home to prevent decay- tooth decay is a completelypreventable condition.
Regular 6 monthly visits mean that any decay that doesdevelop is found when it is small and can be treated eas-ily, even in children as young as three or four years old. Wealso carry out small x-rays to check that decay is not de-veloping between teeth as recommended by the Euro-pean Academy of Paediatric Dentists.
Decay between teeth can only be seen by the nakedeye when the decay is extensive, however detecting thedecay early means avoiding toothache and extensivetreatment for your child.
A happy, healthy child is also one of our aims for all ourpatients. Early visits for check-ups and advice on how to
care for teeth also help your child become a comfortabledental patient for life. We aim to make these dental visitsa positive experience by introducing children to den-tistry at a pace tailored for their age in a child friendly en-vironment and also by helping to prevent the need fordental treatment.
The specialists at Castleknock Orthodontics and Den-tistry for Children will give you the confidence to smileagain.
• Castleknock Orthodontics and Dentistry for Chil-dren is located in the Ashleigh Centre, besideBrasserie 15 in Castleknock. There is a large car parkjust outside our practice with free parking. Call 01-8066066 for an appointment or visit castleknocko-rthodontics.ie for more information.

Council will hold another roundof non-statutory consultation togive people another opportunityto make their views known and
make further submissions to theproject team, before any final de-cisions are made,” said ProjectEngineer, Peter O’Reilly.
“The project team and theconsultants will then conduct afinal round of studies to identifythe most suitable locations for
the new wastewater treatmentworks, the orbital sewer and themarine outfall, with an an-nouncement expected possiblytowards the end of the year.
“A full Environmental Im-pact Assessment (EIA) will assessin full all potential impacts of thepreferred location for each of thethree elements; the wastewatertreatment works, the marine out-fall and the orbital sewer.”
Officials say the new regionalwastewater treatment works isneeded to augment the Ringsendregional wastewater treatmentworks after 2020 and will be de-veloped in phases.
Engineers say that when itopens, the new plant will be nobigger than a sixth of the size ofthe Ringsend plant. They’ve alsopromised that when fully ex-tended by 2040 the new NorthCounty Dublin treatment facilitywill not be any more than onethird of the size of the fully ex-tended Ringsend plant.
The council believes the newregional wastewater treatmentworks are needed to protect theenvironment and secure the fu-ture economic, commercial, in-dustrial and residential needs ofthe Greater Dublin Area after2020.

Move or Make OverCreating the perfect space for relaxationQ: I opened up a small beauty salon a few years ago and
have decided to expand from three treatment rooms to fiveand re-launch as more of a spa than a salon.
The existing paint is a bright off-white colour which is greatfor the beauty treatments we offer but not ideal for the ho-listic therapies we now do.
I would like to reflect our progression from beauty salonto spa in the décor of the new building and would appreciateany tips and advice on how best to achieve that.
withstand scrubbing and clean-ing without fading, perfect forhigh-traffic areas like yourtreatment rooms.
Soft Berry from this range isa relaxing berry shade that isdeep, inviting and warm. Con-trasted with neutral wood andmetal work in Potato Cake orFlawless Fawn, I feel it wouldadd some personality to yourrooms.
As I am sure you are aware, there are many other consider-ations when redecorating a spa- flooring and lighting are prob-ably the most important.
Choosing a wooden or tiledfloor is probably the most prac-tical in terms of slippages, es-
in association with
A: Decorating a workingspace that is going to be usedfor relaxation can be difficult. On the one hand you want tocreate a productive workingspace for your staff and, on theother, you want to create asoothing atmosphere forclients.
The best advice I can giveyou is that somehow you strikea balance. Beauty salons andspas are places where peoplecan truly unwind and forgettheir day-to-day worries.
Even if their treatment isnot a totally relaxing experi-ence, it is a haven where youare not disturbed and mobilephones are a no-no. To reflectthat, I suggest you paint treat-ment rooms in soft, ambientshades.
Crown’s Classic Collectioncontains a range of beautifulrich shades that will warm andsoften any room. Shades likeElegant Café and Classic Mocha
are deep and inviting. If you want to keep the
paint in your newly-decoratedsalon more fresh and brightthen take a look at some of thecomforting shades in Crown’sIndulgence range.
Tiramisu and Silk Gown arerich and warm shades and theindulgence paint is a luxuriousmatt emulsion that is packedwith tiny microspheres makingthe paint thick and creamy.
To maintain that warm andcosy feeling, paint woodwork, metal and ceilings in MilkWhite or Lightest Beige fromthe Solo One Coat collection.
These shades are less harshthan Pure Brilliant White butwill still provide an excellentcontrast to the warmer shadeson the walls.
If you are considering morecolour, then perhaps take alook at Crown’s Easycleanrange. Easyclean is an ex-tremely durable paint that will
pecially with hot wax around, but be mindful that this canalso add a cold and noisy as-pect to the space.
Opting to resurrect youroriginal wooden floorboardswould be a great idea and Irecommend you choose ahard-wearing and durable var-nish. Sadolin Extra DurableFloor Varnish is the perfectchoice as it provides extremehardness and prolongs the lifeof interior wooden floors while
maintaining natural warmthand beauty.
Soft lighting is the key tocreating a soothing ambientatmosphere. Fit your lightswith dimmer switches and in-vest in both wall and free-standing lamps. Add anabundance of candles to de-velop the perfect mood.
Reception is an area ofyour new spa where you canreally inject some character. This should be an open and
friendly room where your staffcan greet and chat withclients.
With that in mind, you mayconsider a brighter paint forthis room, something likeCream Light from Crown’s Ulti-mate Range would be the per-fect fit.
Again, if you have a staffroom or somewhere that allyour staff convene and hangout then perhaps take a lookat a nice bright yellow colour,
that will give off a happy andcontent mood, great for staffmorale.
Good luck with your newspa, I hope it is a roaring suc-cess!● Neville Knott is a celebrityinterior designer and CrownPaints Colour Consultant. Toreceive regular updates anddesign tips from Neville, simply log onto www.crownpaints.ie.

Shelving that clutter
STUFF. Every home is cluttered with stuff. You've tried squeezing it into closets andhiding it under beds. You've even consid-ered lugging stuff down to the basement sothat you can make more room - for morestuff.
The fact is we all need more storage spaceand some simple shelving could provide theanswer.
If you’re looking to get your home organ-ised, shelving is the way to go. It's cost effec-tive, easy to install, and comes in a variety ofcolours, styles and finishes.
Think you can't possibly fit all of yourchild's clothing and accessories into thatroom? Well, think vertical. Wall space can bemore valuable as storage than a place to ex-hibit posters of the latest pop stars.
Organise your child's bedroom and studyspace by adding shelves to store books, CDsand magazines. Self-adhesive liner can makeit look funky.
Shelving above desks and computers cankeep work or study areas free from clutter andprovide valuable storage space for equipmentthat’s only used periodically.
With kids around shelves can also help re-duce accidents around the home – especiallyin the kitchen, shed or garage.
Children are always ready and willing toexplore all that your home has to offer sokeep cleaning supplies and household chem-icals out of reach of small hands with alter-
native wood shelving.Linen closets, laundry rooms, walk-in
pantries, bathrooms, and garages can all havespace to put those items we want to keep outof reach of children if you install propershelving.
Basement and attics can be valuable realestate when considering home storage op-tions. Instead of wrestling with heavy boxesand packing tape, go for simplified, easily in-stalled storage solutions for your family heir-looms, out-of-season clothing, tools, gardening supplies, and of course, holidaydecorations.
Shelve them and you'll always know whereyour treasures are when you need them.
Some of today's shelving options are at-tractive, light-weight, and easy to install, withimpressive strength and durability. There’s avariety of shelving depths and lengths to fityour space or that can be cut to size and cus-tomized to match the décor of your home.
Available in high-quality, attractive whiteand maple finishes, wood shelving can beused 'as is'.
For those who have a specific look in mindfor their shelving solutions there are productsthat can be easily sanded and painted provid-ing a smooth, splinter-free surface for cus-tomized finishing.

Osteopathythe simple beauty behind the treatment
Most people in theirlifetime will experiencelow back pain. It may bea fleeting one off episodeof stiffness on waking upin the morning, whichthen goes away asmysteriously at it cameon. Back pain can comeon suddenly, possibly fromlifting an awkward object,a car accident or fall. Thiscan lead to a severe formof low back pain whichcan lock up the wholespine and render thesufferer immobile and ingreat discomfort. Withtime and appropriate carethe back gets better.
Long term back ache posesmore of a problem. Possiblyleading to long periods ofpain, loss of mobility andquality of life. You may notbe able to do normal dailyactivities such as walking, lifting a child or yourfavourite sport. Long termpain sufferers who takemedication may over a longperiod time experience sideeffects which lead to ulcers, constipation and generallethargy.
So what can cause lowbackache? In order toexplain some of the causesof backache we need tounderstand a little anatomy. The low back has five bonesor vertebrae which have aflexible disc between themLigaments, joints andmuscles help support andbalance the low back andspine. Damage to any ofthese structures will lead tolow back pain. So how doyou damage thesestructures? Poor lifting, age, poor work environment, road traffic accidents, fallsand previous pregnanciesare some of the causer thatcan lead to structuraldamage. If you are healthy,if the original cause was nottoo severe and you are notcontinually straining the lowback, then the body willheal itself.
Unhealthy living such aspoor diet, not exercising,
smoking, bad posture, aphysical job that isdemanding and beingstressed will slow down andeven prevent healing. Thiswould lead to morepersistent backache thatmay get worse. Eating toomuch and being overweightwill strain the low back. Noteating enough healthy foodsdeprives the body of vitalingredients needed to repairdamaged structures. Doingtoo little correct exercise willlead to poor muscle toneand support for the backwhich leaves it prone torepeated injury andcontinual irritation of theinjured areas. Smoking notonly reduces the amount ofhealing oxygen needed forrepair but also stimulatesinflammation and pain.Poor posture will alsoprevent low backache. Ifthe weight and forces arenot evenly and correctlydistributed along the spine, then key areas of the spinewill be prone to injury andirritation.
Bad posture can be asobvious as the stooping oldage pensioner, but it is oftenquite subtle. Age, geneticsand poor habit may beresponsible. The bonesand discs of the spine sit onthe pelvis which acts likethe foundation and base fornot only the low back butalso the whole spine andupper body. If the pelvis istwisted, then in effect, thebase of the spine isunbalanced leading tostresses in the lower backand spine. Having one legshorter than another, possibly from a kneeoperation or broken leg canlead to a twist in the pelvis.Joints, ligaments andmuscles ache after standingor sitting as they try to keepthese deviations fromfurther damaging the back.
An osteopath may help youidentify what is causing thelow backache and why youare not improving. Carefulquestioning may help youidentify what you are doing
in your life that iscontinually irritating yourback. A comprehensiveexamination will helpidentify postural imbalancesand with gentle movementsof the spine help to correctthem. Following advice ondiet and exercise will allowyou to take control of yourbackache. This will allowyou to live in less pain andhave a better quality of life.
