Message of hopeJack Gleeson

anoRthside athlete who hopes to be competing for ireland at the 2018 Winter

olympics in south korea has teamed up with a mental health charity to share his remarkable story of hope.

Seven years ago Brendan Doyle, from Dublin 9, was working as a Garda when he was called to a routine incident that ended up in a terrifying ordeal and turned his life upside down.

“On a late spring day in May, a colleague and I were called to a domestic abuse incident at a house in Dublin,” he recalls.

“Arriving to find an aggressive

man and a frightened, injured woman, I did what any Garda would do and attempted to apprehend the suspect.

“During the incident that ensued, I sustained massive injuries to my hand which still leaves me without function in my baby finger and thumb, and a lifetime of skin grafts and corrective surgery ahead.”

But it wasn’t the physical injuries that affected Brendan the most - it was the unexpected mental trauma that really floored him.

“It started with night terrors,” he says. “I would relive what happened that night, waking up and grabbing my hand thinking it had been wounded all over again.

Cluid is almost three years into a 15-year lease agreement on the units off the Tolka Valley Road in Finglas.

However, if bought privately and rented on the open market when the lease expires, the block would yield a significantly higher return than the current estimate of over five per cent.

The block, known as The Griffith, is made up of 14 two-bed apartments and 14 three

bed duplex units. The homes are part of the

Prospect Hill complex on Finglas Road that comprises almost 500 apartments, mostly privately owned.

An entire estate of 49 homes was sold in Finglas last December when housing trust, Thuath Housing, bought An Riasc on Farnham Drive between Erin’s Isle and Einn Eber Fort.

That estate was originally intended for a mix of public and private housing.

“Depression followed. I just got into a dark place where I struggled to keep on going. The lowest point for me was not when I thought about ending it all, but when I got to a point where I thought this would be the most logical step.

“For me, it stopped being scary and simply seemed a better solution than what I was going through.”

It was after what Brendan describes as his “deepest, darkest moment”, just before he was about to take a step into doing something permanent, that he made a deal with himself that saved his life.

“I decided I would make one last and real effort to break this cycle that I was living in,” he explains.

Brendan went back to the one thing he’d always loved - sport. An athlete all his life, Brendan was talent spotted by the Irish Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association aged just 16, and has competed at European and World events in the past.

He started training again and after a while, he was back to racing. He then made another life-changing decision to leave the gardaí.

Message of hope

The block of homes at Prospect Hill▪

“My happiness meant more than any job,” he says.

“Being as close as I was to losing it all, I knew I needed to take the step to ensure a happy future.”

Brendan has swapped the handcuffs for a toboggan and is now training to get to the Winter Olympics games in Skeleton, a winter sport that involves racing down a bobsleigh track head first, at speeds of over 145kph.

“I now understand how fragile life is, and I’m going to do this,” he adds.

“I want people to see that depression is tough but it’s not

the end. If I can not only work through it, but go to represent my country at the Olympics in such a mentally demanding sport such as Skeleton, anyone can come out the other side.”

Brendan, who lives in Beaumont, is now working with MyMind to raise awareness around mental health, fight stigma and put wellbeing within everyone’s reach.

“The reason I’m so excited to work with MyMind is that when I was going through my depression and panic attacks, I had so many reasons not to go talk to someone,” he says.

“I needed a GP note to get a referral to a counsellor. It was just too expensive and honestly, I didn’t have the drive to go.

“MyMind makes getting help simple. All you need to do is pick up the phone to call or click online to book and get the help you need.

“If there is anyone out there reading this, going through their own troubles, I urge you to take the step and contact MyMind.

“I was so lucky to get through my ordeal and I want to do all I can to ensure that others don’t have to struggle as I did.”

Concrete People is a solid exhibitionJack Gleeson

A VERY special exhibition of photographs from a local pa-per that captured the essence of Ballymun from 1998 to 2006 opened at Axis on Main Street last week.

The photos originally appeared in Ballymun Concrete News and the ‘Concrete People’ exhibition has been curated by its editor, Seamus Kelly.

The one-man operated news-paper was a full colour eight-page monthly tabloid with a cir-culation of over 20,000.

It was distributed free of charge to homes in Ballymun be-fore it ceased trading.

The exhibition coincides with three major milestones in Bal-lymun history: the 50th anniver-sary of the first families moving into the estate; Axis’ 15th birth-day; and the final farewell to the seven towers.

‘Concrete People’ features 28 photographs that capture the changing landscape of Ballymun and document the social history of a wonderful local community.

“Ballymun Concrete News was so named because Seamus Kelly recognised the unique sense of community and strength of the people here and their support of one another,” said Axis director Mark O’Brien.

“This strength remains un-changed today and we have titled this exhibition Concrete People in recognition of that.”

The digital archive of Ballymun Concrete News has been donated to Dublin City Library and Archive

by Seamus Kelly and consists of 87 editions in total.

Collectively, the papers provide a colourful record of ‘good news stories’ from Ballymun from 1998 to 2006.

Articles focus on topics such as the Ballymun Regeneration Project, the opening of new com-

munity facilities such as Axis Bal-lymun, sporting events, and the achievements of local residents in all areas of life.

The exhibition was opened by Cllr Paul McAuliffe (FF), who praised the work of Seamus Kelly and pointed out that Ballymun Concrete News is the only con-temporary community publica-tion included in Dublin City Ar-chives.

“I was delighted for Seamus and the people of Ballymun that this important record was pre-served for future generations to use,” he said.

“The changes which took place in Ballymun over this period were innovative and controversial. In future years it will prove to be an important primary source for so-cial historians.”

During the Concrete People exhibition there will be a call out for submissions for a new major group exhibition titled ‘The Mun’ that’s due to take place next No-vember in Axis.

The group event will chart the story of Ballymun and its people and celebrate the 50 years since the first families moved into the area. It’ll also feature work from invited artists on the theme.

Submissions of photographs, videos, memorabilia or artworks from Ballymun residents are also being sought.

Concrete People is part of the Axis 2016 ‘Dream out Loud’ pro-gramme, celebrating a landmark year for Ballymun with a range of events and initiatives to highlight and celebrate the importance of creativity, culture and the art in society.

I was delightedfor Seamus

WITH all the recent focus on crime in Dublin, it would be a shame if the plight of our homeless

people fell off the radar in the run up to Friday’s general election.

Like crime, homelessness has always been with us. Both of these societal problems are often put down to a lack of resources, although the reality is that there is a myriad of complex reasons behind them.

Since the last election, the causes of homelessness have changed. Granted, the old reliables are still there – drug

addiction, alcohol abuse, dysfunction-al relationships. But from the embers of what was once the Celtic Tiger, a new class of homeless community has emerged. Many are victims of the boom and bust politics that came to define everything that was vulgar about modern Ireland; where bankers lent with reckless abandon and then viciously turned on borrowers when the going got tough.

In fairness, many had overstretched themselves, buying multiple proper-ties and unfinished holiday homes abroad. Some lost their shirts on their investments; others lost the roofs over their heads.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of people living in their cars and young families crammed into single hotel rooms with no cooking facilities, away from their communities and children’s schools. Measures to tackle the flaws in the rental sector have been too little, too late. Rents in Dublin are beyond the reach of many.

Last week, this newspaper exclu-sively revealed how one Dublin couple have been living in a makeshift tent near the Phoenix Park in conditions that would make Strumpet City look like Downton Abbey. In a damning indictment of our failed housing poli-cies, they have languished there for

over a year. After losing their rented accommodation, they initially ended up in hostels where they felt threatened by drug addicts. A tent by the side of a busy road proved to be the lesser of two evils.

Many election candidates will admit that not everyone is feeling the benefit

of the economic upturn. Damn right they’re not.

Is there anything more shameful than people living in tents in 2016? Ask your candidates this question in the dy-ing days of this election campaign.

As we approach the centenary of the Easter Rising, we should use the

opportunity to take stock of how far we have come as a society in the interven-ing 100 years. If our progress is to be assessed on how we treat the most marginalised, then clearly we have a long way to go before we have an Irish Republic as envisaged by the 1916 leaders.

New schools in September

Local parent and start-up group member, Rónán Whelan, has been working with other parents in Dublin 7 to support the Educate Together bid for patronage in his area.

“I feel these schools offer a learning environment that is modern and genuinely child-centred,” he said.

“Importantly, the Educate Together model also facilitates and supports real engagement with parents on how primary education is delivered for their children.

“I am confident that there is sustainable demand for many years to come for an Educate Together school in Cabra/ Phibsborough and I look forward to many more parents joining the campaign in the coming weeks.”

Educate Together and CDETB recently announced the opening of a secondary school in Whitehall, Dublin 9. Clonturk Community College will open to first-year students in September.

The Northside schools will be in the Cabra/Phibsborough and Drumcondra/Marino areas and Educate Together has applied for patronage of both.

The primary schools are due to open this September and Educate Together has been running local campaigns to encourage parents to back their bid.

“I have had numerous requests over many years from parents who want Educate Together schools in these areas and there are now active Educate Together start-up groups working to this end,” said Educate Together Regional Development Officer for Dublin, Gerry McKevitt.

He added: “We already have a lot of interest and we look forward to a speedy resolution of the patronage determination process.”

THERE could be two new Northside Educate Together primary schools soon following an official invitation from Education Minister, Jan O’Sullivan, asking interested bodies to apply for patronage.

Happy hearts in Dublin 15BLANCHARDSTOWN Commu-nity Training Centre is leading the charge for heart health in Dublin after winning Healthy Eating and Silver Active@Work awards from the Irish Heart Foundation.

At the presentation of awards, the national charity said work-place health is more than a ‘tick the box’ exercise as it can be used very effectively to increase pro-ductivity, reduce absenteeism

and to boost overall morale and positivity.

The Healthy Eating award is presented to organisations that provide and promote healthy meal options in their restaurants. The Active@Work Award is in rec-ognition of efforts to boost em-ployee physical activity levels at work.

The Irish Heart Foundation says promoting an active work-force has the potential to reduce sick by days by as much as 27 per

cent and drive down absenteeism by up to 20 per cent.

Vice President of the Irish Heart Foundation Prof Declan Sugrue said: “Serious health problems face us as a nation with heart disease and stroke at the top of the list claiming more lives than any other cause of death in this country.

“Creating a supportive envi-ronment to empower individuals where they work or live is essen-tial.”

ELECTION 2016 >>

Dog-fight in Dublin CentralTHERE’S going to be a dog-fight in Dublin Central for the third seat if the latest analysis from Paddy Power is anything to go by.

The bookmakers expect Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald to be a shoo-in and is unbackable at odds of 1/25.

Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe is also expected to hold

his seat at 4/9 but it looks like being a real scrap for the third seat with five or six candidates all in with a realistic chance.

According to Paddy Power, In-dependents Maureen O’Sullivan (8/15) and, less likely, Christy Burke (11/8), have the best chance of the final seat, while Joe Costello (Lab) at 9/2 could lose out and Social Democrat Gary Gannon is an outsider at

11/2.Fianna Fáil supporters will

reckon their candidate, Mary Fitzpatrick, has a better than a 6/1 chance and Cieran Perry (Ind) at 20/1 could be a dark horse. Other runners in Dublin Central include Eillis Ryan (WP) at 50/1, Ian Noel Smyth at 66/1, Diana O’Dwyer at 80/1 and Cor-mac McKay (DDI) and Andrew Kelly, both at 100/1

Phibsboro is in the heart of Dublin Central▪

Paddy Power odds for Dublin North West▪

Third seat up for grabs in North West DUBLIN North West used to be a Fianna Fáil stronghold with the constituency providing the party with two Govern-ment ministers a decade ago.

That probably seems an aw-ful long time ago to Cllr Paul McAuliffe who’s aiming to get FF back in the game in this slightly expanded constituency.

However, he’s not fancied by Paddy Power bookmakers who have him as a 9/1 shot and their odds predict it’ll be Cllr Noel Rock at 4/6 making a comeback for his Fine Gael party.

You have to go back two de-cades to find a FG representa-tive in the area and while the party is expected to lose seats elsewhere, this one could be a gain for them.

Labour won two seats here last time out in 2011 but Roisin Shortall has swapped red for the purple of the Social Democrats

That leaves her former run-ning mate, John Lyons, with a job on his hands to keep the red flag flying.

Paddy Power reckon Shortall will romp home easily at 1/33 and likeable Lyons still has a

chance of holding his seat at 2/1, but he’ll be depending on transfers.

Dessie Ellis is another popu-lar candidate predicted to easily hold his Sinn Féin seat at 1/25.

However, the question will be if he can pull in running mate Cathleen Carney Boud who’s a 9/4 shot.

Outsiders in the Dublin North West race are Andrew Keegan (AAA-PBP) at 14/1 while Jimmy Dignam (WP), Caroline Conroy (GP), Cormac McKay (DDI-NCM) and Bernie Hughes (Ind) are all ranked 50/1.

Few certainties in Dublin WestJack Gleeson and Darren Kinsella

RECENT polls have predicted that Tánaiste Joan Burton could be in real danger of losing the Dublin West seat she comfort-ably held at the last election in 2011 when she topped the poll.

Five years ago Labour won 18 seats in Dublin. But the decision to team up with Fine Gael in Gov-ernment doesn’t appear to have gone down well with some voters and their sitting TDs will certainly struggle across the capital on Feb-ruary 26.

A party leader losing her seat would be a real humiliation for Labour - and a personal blow the Tánaiste would find it hard to re-cover from politically.

However, Deputy Burton won’t go down without a fight and she’ll be battling hard to keep the seat she first won in 1992 and has held since 2002.

Much of the focus in Dublin West will be on the Tánaiste but there are other interesting ques-tions waiting to be answered in this constituency on polling day.

Health Minister Leo Varadkar (FG) looks comfortable according to the polls. But could he be fac-ing trouble in this traditionally left-leaning constituency or will his popularity benefit running mate Catherine Noone, and where will her transfers go if she’s elimi-nated?

Can Sinn Féin’s Cllr Paul Donnel-

ly finally make the breakthrough his party has been hoping for in Dublin West after years of disap-pointment? And with popular Socialist TD Joe Higgins standing down, will his support automati-

cally transfer to Ruth Coppinger (AAA-PBP)?

Can David McGuinness (Ind) bring enough support from his former party, Fianna Fáil, to scup-per the chances of Cllr Jack Cham-

bers (FF)? And what about Inde-pendents like TJ Clare and Dermot Casey, the Green Party’s Roderic O’Gorman or Renua’s Jo O’Brien?

So what do people on the ground think? We decided to take an unscientific approach to this particular question and took to the streets to ask locals what way they’d be voting this Friday.

We went across Dublin West to Castleknock, Corduff and Blanchardstown and asked 100 voters from these three very dif-ferent areas who they’d be giving their number one to.

Our random survey was in no way an official poll but there was relatively good news for Joan Burton who got 14 per cent, just

behind Cllr Jack Chambers (FF) on 15 per cent. The Tánaiste had over 22 per cent of first preferences in 2011 but recent polls have had her as low as 10 per cent - 14 per cent would put her in the mix for a seat.

Likewise for Cllr Chambers, who the party faithful see as a natural successor to the local Lenihan seat held by Brian Snr and Jnr from the ‘70s until 2011 when the former Finance Minister passed away.

There’s good news for Cllr Paul Donnelly (SF) if the people we spoke to are anything to go by, as his popularity in Corduff helped him get 28 per cent in our survey.

That’s more than Leo Varad-

kar, who did well in Castleknock and Blanchardstown, and got the thumbs-up from 26 per cent of those asked.

But his running mate Catherine Noone failed to register with any-body we asked, as did Renua’s Jo O’Brien.

Perhaps surprisingly, Ruth Cop-pinger only scored three per cent in our exercise, while the Inde-pendents reached a combined 10 per cent - the majority in support of David McGuinness.

However, that was just the re-sponse from 100 random people and the real answers will come from locals on February 26.

It’s your decision at the end of the day.

Local youth grill election candidates ahead of pollTHE youth of Dublin 15 might not be eligible to vote in Fri-day’s election but that didn’t stop them giving the candi-dates a grilling last week.

The clash of generations took place at Fingal County Coun-cil civic offices on Grove Road, Blanchardstown, where the po-litical hopefuls answered a bar-rage of questions.

The event was organised by Foróige, the national youth de-velopment organisation that works with around 3,000 young people across Dublin 15 in a va-

riety of different clubs, projects and services.

Chaired by Daniel Whooley, a member of Foroige’s National Council, the interactive session enabled a selected group of young people nominated from Dublin 15 youth projects to ask local political candidates about issues related to youth.

Politicians in attendance were Cllr Jack Chambers (FF), Cllr Paul Donnelly (SF), Cllr David Mc-Guinness (FF) and Cllr Roderic O’Gorman (GP).

The session gave the young-sters a chance to keep abreast

of political developments in the area and they were well pre-pared beforehand.

The youngsters took part in a four-week politics programme in their local project or service, with the support of their youth workers. This allowed them to identify issues affecting them, so they could discuss their local and national concerns and consider questions that they posed to the general election candidates.

There are 18 Foróige operated and managed projects in the Dublin 15 area and 40 Foróige clubs.

Dublin rents almost back to peak levelsJack Gleeson

RENTS have increased by 8.2 per cent in Dublin over the past year according to the

latest quarterly rental report from property website Daft.ie.

The average advertised rent in the final quarter of 2015 was €1,435, up 43 per cent from their lowest point in 2011.

The capital remains effectively starved of rental properties, with fewer than 1,400 homes on the market at the start of February, the equivalent of less than two weeks supply.

Ronan Lyons, economist at TCD and author of the Daft Re-port, said there’s no sign of any improvement in the extreme lack of rental accommodation

throughout the country, particu-larly in Dublin.

“The shortage of accommo-dation was first identified in the Daft.ie Report in late 2010, ahead of the last election,” he added.

“Unfortunately, at the time, the political focus was on legacy issues related to ghost estates and negative equity. Hopefully, the new Government will focus on taking the necessary steps to increase availability of homes to rent early in its term of office.”

The report found that for the third quarter in a row, annual inflation in Dublin rents (at 8.2 per cent) remains below infla-tion outside the capital (9.8 per cent).

The highest year-on-year rent increases in Dublin were in West County Dublin, where rents are

up by 10.2 per cent to an average of €1,269.

In South County Dublin the increase was 6.5 per cent, bring-ing average rents up to €1,625. North County Dublin saw a sub-stantial increase of 9.9 per cent meaning rents are now averag-ing out at €1,197.

North City rents are up by 8.6 per cent to €1,336 while in the South City the increase is 8.4 per cent to €1,547. City Centre rents are also up 8.4 per cent to an av-erage of €1,433.

Rents in central Dublin have risen 46 per cent since 2010, compared to an increase of 36.6 per cent in South County Dublin in the same period.

Across the city, rents are now, on average, just one per cent below their peak levels of eight years ago. Average annual percentage increases in rents across the city.▪

Unfortunately, at the time, the political

focus was on legacy issues related to ghost estates and negative equity. Hopefully, the new Government will focus on taking the necessary steps to increase availability of homes to rent early in its term of office.

Northsider Brian Mangan with TV Personality Diarmuid Gavin at the awards ceremony▪

Brian’s design sprouts awardNORTHSIDER Brian Mangan has been rewarded for his landscape design talent at this year’s Kilsaran Student Design Competition 2016.

Renowned garden designer and TV personality, Diarmuid Gavin, was the overall judge of the competition that took place in Kilsaran’s headquarters in Co Meath last week.

Brian is a mature student at the Teagasc College of Amenity Horticulture at the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin and his creative, original landscape design ensured he was one of five finalists in the competition.

“Gardening has always been my passion, my daughter Kate is a botanist and spurred me on to change my career in IT to horticulture,” Brian from Griffith Avenue said.

“I love to garden with my grandson Leo who’s four. It’s a wonderful way to relax and brilliant for your overall wellbeing.

“I did the course to get more of an understanding of the

technical side of design so I’m delighted that my efforts have been recognised by someone like Diarmuid who I always admired.”

Kilsaran received over 58 entries for this year’s competition, the highest to date. The designs varied from traditional and contemporary to wacky and inventive.

The brief was to design a garden to fit a 60 - 90 square metre space and judges were looking for a design that was original, practical and buildable using the company’s hard paving and walling products within a budget of €20,000.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Diarmuid Gavin said: “It is truly amazing to see such creative and innovative landscape displays year after year.

“We see lots of student competitions every year but this one is truly unique as it puts landscape design talent on the map and may encourage others to seek a career in this space.”

Passenger numbers up as London keeps callingJack Gleeson

ALMOST 4.5 million people flew between Dublin and Lon-don last year making it the world’s second busiest inter-national air route.

Passenger numbers between Dublin Airport and the five London airports increased by 370,000 in 2015, up nine per cent on the previous year.

Dublin-London is the busiest air route in Europe and second globally only to Hong Kong-Tai-pei, which has five million pas-sengers per year.

“The London market, which is a key destination for Dublin Airport, had a very strong year in 2015,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Har-rison.

“The number of people who travelled by air between Dublin and London last year was the equivalent of almost the entire population of the Republic of Ireland.

“That meant that every week last year 86,000 people flew be-tween Dublin and London –more than a full Croke Park stadium or an almost full Wembley Stadium flying between the two cities ev-

ery seven days.”Four airlines – Aer Lingus,

British Airways, CityJet and Ry-anair - currently operate routes from Dublin Airport to London serving London Heathrow, Lon-don Gatwick, London Stansted, London City and London Luton airports.

The Dublin-London route ac-counted for almost 18 per cent of Dublin Airport’s total traffic last year and it attracts a high degree of business travel.

“A quarter of all of passengers on Dublin-London services are travelling for business, which is high by European standards,”

Passenger numbers from Dublin to London increased by nine per cent last year▪

Mr Harrison added.Trade between the Republic of

Ireland and the UK is worth €58 billion per year, according to the British Irish Chamber of Com-merce, comprising €32 billion of exports from Ireland and €26 billion of imports to Ireland.

“Dublin-London is one of world’s busiest trade corridors and Dublin Airport is delighted to help facilitate increased trade and travel between the two countries,” Harrison said.

There is also a strong leisure market as both Dublin and Lon-

don are major tourist destina-tions.

“London is the most popular destination from Dublin Airport and has been for many years,” Harrison added. “London is one of the great cities of the world and is hugely popular with Irish visitors either on holidays or vis-iting friends and relatives.

“Dublin and its hinterland has long been a popular short-break destinations for British tourists and alongside other stakehold-ers, Dublin Airport is supporting the new Dublin tourism brand to

help grow that business and en-courage visitors to explore more of the city and the region,” Mr Harrison continued.

Overall passenger numbers at Dublin Airport increased by 15 per cent last year to a record 25 million passengers as the airport welcomed 22 new routes and ad-ditional capacity on almost 40 other services.

In total, an extra 3.3 million people used Dublin Airport last year, as it had record levels of traffic in all its major market sectors.

SAS expands cheaper ‘Go Light’ concept across EuropePASSENGERS flying with SAS can look forward to lower prices if they’re travelling with carry-on bags only.

The Scandinavian airline is expanding its ‘Go Light’ concept from April 27 to all European desti-nations after a positive response to its introduction on selected flights.

Go Light is designed for SAS customers who want to travel light with only carry-on bags, and who are also looking for a lower price.

The concept is being launched to complement the existing SAS Go and SAS Plus products and it’ll be around €14 lower than SAS Go.

“SAS Go Light has been piloted on our Dublin routes since last September and it has received a good response from SAS customers,” said Alan Sparling, GSA for SAS in Ireland.

“That’s why we are now launching SAS Go Light for all European destinations.

“As SAS Go Light will complement existing prod-ucts, SAS customers will have more opportunity to choose the option that best meets their needs.”

SAS Go Light includes an option to cancel with a full refund within 24 hours, the ability to choose a seat 22 hours before departure, and tea and coffee on board.

Passengers can also pay for access to the SAS Lounge and add checked baggage from €25.

SAS EuroBonus member benefits are also pro-vided when traveling on SAS Go Light. So, for ex-ample, Silver, Gold, and Diamond members can take checked baggage free of charge when booking

Perfect timing for best pricesJack Gleeson

TIMING is everything when it comes to getting the best flight bargains.

Book too early and you risk pay-ing over the odds, although your seat is guaranteed; leave it too late and the flight may be sold out or only available at peak prices.

According to Skyscanner the average optimum time for book-ing most flights is seven weeks in advance.

The global travel search engine has analysed millions of exits from Ireland to find out when the best prices to popular destination are up for grabs.

Getting the best deal really de-pends on the destination. Passen-gers booking flights to Amsterdam can save up to 35 per cent on aver-age prices to the Dutch capital by booking 17 weeks in advance.

Closer to home, there’s savings of up to 41 per cent on flights to Manchester booked 17 weeks in advance, while there’s a fantastic 45 per cent saving on flights to Paris booked seven weeks before take off.

The month Irish holidaymak-ers travel can also make a dif-ference with Skyscanner’s data

showing November as the cheap-est month to travel from Ireland, with savings of up to 14 per cent to be made against average price flights.

At the other end of the scale, the summer holiday month of July is by far the most expensive month to travel in.

Travel editor at Skyscanner.ie, Cat McGloin, explained why the online search engine carried out the research.

“As an unbiased global travel search site, we felt it was impor-tant to analyse all the data we have access to and share this in-sight with travellers to help them get the best price,” she said.

“Other tips for getting the best deals on flights include using our browse by month tool which shows the cheapest flights avail-able and setting up price alerts so that you’ll get alerted as soon as the price changes.”

SOLAS eCollege announces five new coursesNEW accountancy, digital mar-keting, visual communications and design courses are now available through eCollege, the national online learning service operated by SOLAS.

The new eCollege o erings include: a Certifi ed Accountancy Technician course; Print and Digi-tal Design Media Publication using Adobe InDesign; Graphic Design and Illustration using Adobe Il-lustrator; Film and Video Produc-tion using Adobe Premiere; and a Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing.

The new courses have been added to the existing 36 courses o ered by SOLAS eCollege.

SOLAS says eCollege o ers market-led courses with techni-cal and tutor help as well as the software and support learners re-quired to achieve industry recog-nised qualifi cations and certifi ca-tion.

As technology has advanced, SOLAS eCollege has evolved so that it remains relevant to learn-ers and to industries. For example in 2014, virtual classrooms were introduced. All courses lead to in-dustry certifi cation.

SOLAS eCollege courses are ac-cessible from any location, at any time and can accommodate the pace at which individuals wish to progress.

As courses are o ered on a continuous intake basis, learners can start whenever they wish. This fl exibility makes eCollege courses ideal for anyone wishing to balance study with work.

Jobseekers wishing to enhance their CVs can take eCollege cours-es for free if they are in receipt of social welfare payments. The courses are also a good way for businesses to upskill sta , and an attractive rate is o ered to employers who register their em-ployees on eCollege courses.

“SOLAS is delighted to be in-creasing the number of eCollege courses o ered,” said SOLAS CEO, Paul O’Toole.

“As the economy is improving, online learning is a really good option for people in employment who wish to enhance their skills but are not in a position to attend lectures, for business that wish to

upskill their sta in specifi c areas and for jobseekers who need in-dustry certifi ed skills for their CVs.

“SOLAS eCollege is pleased to be in a position to meet all of these needs, in a fl exible way.”

SOLAS eCollege has been in operation since the early 2000s and has supported over 90,000

people to upskill and reskill. A 2014 survey of learners showed that 94 per cent of respondents would recommend a SOLAS eCol-lege online course to others.

SOLAS eCollege learners come from a wide variety of locations, age, educational level and back-grounds. Of the approximately 11,000 learners who availed of

online courses in 2015, 53 per cent were male and 47 per cent female.

The vast majority were job-seekers who received courses free-of-charge but an increasing number of employed learners are also availing of courses. Learners in employment pay a standard fee.

Local schools to go codingTHREE schools in Dublin are set to benefi t from specialist teacher training in coding, aided by the donation of development boards by computing innovation world leader Intel.

Teachers from Castleknock College, Adamstown College Lucan and Kishoge Community College Lucan will be among the fi rst in Ireland to teach new Junior Cycle short course in coding and they recently spent a day exploring the subject at the Intel Ireland Campus in Leixlip.

The 19 schools participating in the initiative, including Castleknock, Adamstown and Kishoge, were chosen from over 120 entries from post-primary schools nationwide, with participating teachers receiving two days of initial training, and further online and regional support.

Intel has also made a donation of 900 Galileo Gen 2 Boards and teacher kits to the 19 schools.

The training day and donation are part of a collaborative initiative between Intel Ireland, Lero – The Irish Software Research Centre – and Junior Cycle for

Teachers (JCT).The project is designed to

support schools and teachers in exploring the coding short course now available under the Framework for Junior Cycle 2015.

Students will engage in technology and design-related activities with the use of these state-of the-art resources.

“This donation will support schools in this innovative and exciting coding project, which we hope will produce Ireland’s innovators of the future,” said

Paul Phelan, Public A airs Operations Manager, Intel.

“Intel Ireland is delighted to give students an insight into technology, and allow the development of both logical and digital skills in a fun, collaborative, and innovative learning environment.

“These digital skills are vital if Ireland, and indeed Europe, is to address the coding skills shortage which has led to in excess of 500,000 open job postings across the continent in 2015.”

Participating teachers enjoyed specifi c training at the event to support the exploration of this new learning area in their schools. Both Intel Ireland and Lero support JCT in this work.

“A career in computing can be interesting and creative. This project will allow students to take the fi rst steps in exploring this potential,“ said Clare McInerney, who is Education and Outreach Manager in Lero.

“We are very happy to help build capacity in schools to provide inventive short courses like Coding to their students.”

Further information on the initiative can be found at the JCT website www.jct.ie

Dental disease is a common problem in small animals. It is estimated that 85% of dogs and cats over the age of three are suering from some form of periodontal disease.

It’s never too late to start looking after your pets teeth at home. To reduce the risk of dental disease there are some very simple steps we can take as owners.

Feeding a dry food diet can reduce the buildup of plaque on teeth. When the tooth bites into the dry kibble it causes a mild abrasive action that will help sweep plaque o the teeth. It is best to feed in two meals a day rather than having food available all the time.

Some treats and toys can also help to reduce the buildup of plaque and tartar on teeth. Rawhide treats, hard rubber toys and nylon chews will stimulate the teeth and gums helping to keep them healthy.Brushing your pet’s teeth isthe most eective way of ensuring good dental hygiene. We recommend starting to brush teeth as early in life as possible but it’s never too late to start. A gradual introduction to teeth brushing is the best approach. There are several varieties of pet friendly toothpastes available that are avoured to make it a more enjoyable experience.

A new versatile sports car among SUVs

THE new Ateca is a unique combination of distinctive design, dynamic driving fun,

urban versatility and compel-ling utility.

First-class connectivity, inno-vative assistance systems and highly efficient drives are among its technology highlights and make the Ateca one of the most innovative SUVs in the segment.

Outstanding quality, precision production and excellent value-for-money make the Ateca a true Seat. Front and centre, however, is its agile, light-footed and pre-cision driving fun – the Ateca

makes every day and every ki-lometre that little bit more of an experience.

“The Seat Ateca is perfect for an urban lifestyle,” said Luca de Meo, President of Seat.

The Seat Ateca.▪

“It possesses stunning design and dynamics, and boasts com-pelling quality and utility. But above all, the Ateca exudes un-mistakable character.

“Our first SUV marks the start of a new era for Seat.

“The Ateca is a clear develop-ment of the Leon DNA and will drive forward the success of the Leon range. Seat is a brand on the move.”

When the Ateca begins ad-vance sales this spring, it will be available in a wide range of vari-ants.

The choice of powerful turbo-charged TSI petrol and TDI die-sel engines spans from 85 kW / 115 PS to 140 kW / 190 PS, with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, not to mention manual or dual-clutch DSG transmissions.

The extensive array of tech-nology options extends from full-LED headlamps through a broad portfolio of assistance systems, like the innovative traffic jam as-sist and the new Emergency As-sist, to a package of latest-gen-eration infotainment systems with 8-inch touchscreens and Full Link connectivity.

Three equipment lines offer colours and top-quality materi-als to suit every taste, the top-of-the-range being the Ateca XCEL-

LENCE.Niall Phillips, Brand Director,

SEAT Ireland said: “We are de-lighted to announce the addition of the all-new Ateca to our al-ready excellent product line up.

The Ateca marks the brand’s entry into a new segment for us and it will, we believe, set the standard in its class.

“The introduction of the Ateca comes at a time when the mid-size SUV segment has seen phe-nomenal growth, up 51 per cent year to date compared to the same period in 2015,.

“The announcement of the Ateca adds to what is already an extremely exciting time for the Seat brand as we’re currently in the process of rolling out a full re-brand of our dealerships to ensure that our 22-strong dealer network can offer an even better experience with greater choice to their customers.”

He added: “The Ateca will epitomise exactly what the Seat brand stands for; incredible qual-ity, high class design and attrac-tive, value for money pricing.”

In keeping with Seat tradition, the Ateca derives its name from Spanish geography.

The Ateca village lies in the west of Saragossa in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula.

spring clean the bedroomONCE the long winter months have passed, spring is the per-fect time of year to inject a new lease of life into the home whether it be with a lick of paint, a clothes haul or redeco-rating.

One thing is for sure, it all begins with a thorough spring clean.

Follow these top tips from Snuggledown to achieve that ul-timate crisp, spring clean fresh-ness that will leave your bedroom feeling brand new.

1. TO KEEP OR NOT TO KEEP?Get into the spring clean frame

of mind by kicking off with a bed-room de-clutter. If your bedroom is also your home office, organise paperwork and stationery into neat folders and boxes, this will also help to organise your work-load.

Reduce decorative items that are dotted around the room. Too many will only make your room look busy and take away the ef-fect. Making extra space in your

wardrobe is also a great way begin your spring clean, try and get rid of 10 items of clothing

that you haven’t worn in the past year and take them to the charity shop, be rigorous!

2. FRESH BEDDINGSprucing up your bed with

brand new sheets and luxuri-ous bedding will really complete that spring clean feel. Think crisp cotton sheets or even max-imising comfort with a mattress topper.

The bed is the centrepiece of the bedroom, so experimenting with different patterned duvet covers can totally transform the look of the room. Rather than putting it straight in the bin, re-cycle your old bedding or keep it for when you have guests.

3. WASH DUVETS AND PIL-LOWS

Putting your actual duvet and pillows through the wash will give your bed the ultimate clean feeling. It’s recommended that pillows are washed every 3-6 months to diminish the build-

up of dead skin cells, dust mites and bacteria.

Premium bedding company, Snuggledown is stocking its Wash & Dry Me Duck range, which of-fers all of the qualities of thick, lavish bedding combined with a special washable finish, ideal for the cleaning season.

Wash & Dry Me’s 230 thread count pure cotton cover and soft duck down cluster filing creates a light, yet warm and durable duvet.

For allergy sufferers, Wash & Dry Me Hollowfibre is also avail-able as a synthetic alternative made with a polyester cotton cover in a special stich pattern to hold in the fine hollowfibre filling – an ideal option for al-lergy sufferers which is equally as soft and sumptuous.

4. CLEAN CLEVERLY

Think of those nooks and crannies in your bedroom that you don’t usually touch in the weekly house clean. Pull out furniture and hoover over the areas underneath. It may seem labour intensive but putting in extra effort during your spring clean will mean you don’t have to revisit these areas in a few months’ time.

5. FINISHING TOUCHESOften it’s the finer details that

really bring a room to life. Once you’ve done all of the hard work cleaning and de-cluttering, keep your room feeling fresh and radiant with finishing touches such as scented candles and reed diffusers. Light scents such as fresh cotton, lavender or san-dalwood will give a real essence of spring as well as aiding a rest-ful night’s sleep.

Create magic with mirrorsDECORATIVE wall mirrors can add both beauty and dimen-sion to any home. That’s why they should be one of the most important features used when planning an interior revamp.

Wall mirrors are available in many sizes and shapes and can be housed in a number of co-loured and decorative frames so there’s one to suit every room and almost any space around the home.

Here’s five great ways to effec-tively use decorative wall mirrors in the home.

1. CREATE THE ILLUSION OFSPACE:

Many homes have short, or long narrow hallways which can make a space look small and cramped. By adding a horizontal mirror at the end of the hallway you can make it appear wider and longer, while adding a ver-tical mirror can make it appear taller.

When you use decorative wall mirrors to create dimension in a space, it’s important to consider several different mirrors of vari-ous shapes and sizes to deter-mine which is best suited to the space and the look you’re aiming to achieve.

2. DECORATIVE wALL mIRRORSAS wALL ART:

Instead of only hanging pic-tures and paintings around a room, why not save a little space to showcase a fancy mirror?

You can get mirrors in just about any shape and frame de-sign you want. For instance, if your room is in a Victorian theme, why not hang an antique brass wall mirror behind a sofa, behind the bed or above the fire-place?

A mirror in a log wood frame is

perfect for rustic decor, while ec-centrically shaped and decorat-ed mirrors are ideal for art-deco, modern, or eclectic designs.

3. USE mORE THAN ONE mIR-ROR:

Don’t be afraid to use more than one mirror in your rooms. Since decorative wall mirrors are designed with different frames that feature various colours and adornments, why not consider doing an arrangement of mir-rors?

For instance, if your room is styled in retro decor, you can make an arrangement with mirrors of various geometrical shapes with different coloured frames that coincide with your retro colour scheme – think blue triangle, red circle, orange square, and black diamond.

Another good idea is to buy small, frameless square or irreg-ular shaped mirrors, and make your pattern or design with them on the wall.

4. mIRRORS ADD TO A ROOm’SAmBIENCE:

Mirrors reflect light. This makes them an excellent combi-nation with candlelight as it cre-

ates a dramatic look.In order to achieve the best

possible ambience with mirrors and candlelight, make sure you place your decorative wall mir-rors behind a candleholder.

The mirrors should also be sit-uated across from a light source such as a window so that light is openly reflected around the room instead of reflecting only into a cluttered or vacant area.

5. AN ENTRywAy mIRROR ISyOUR BEST FRIEND:

No home entryway should be without a mirror. There are many important places you will be re-quired to go in your lifetime, and the entryway mirror is often the last time you can give yourself a quick check over to ensure you are presentable before leaving your home.

Furthermore, decorative wall mirrors are a very welcoming sight to visitors.

As you can see, decorative wall mirrors can do a lot for your home. Find out what excellent mirrors await you and your de-cor, and remember to use your imagination when browsing and hanging your looking glass.

Businesses unhappy with Government supportFINDINGS from a major new study, commissioned by tel-ecoms and cloud services pro-vider Magnet, were presented at a North Dublin Chamber of Commerce (NDCC) breakfast briefing recently.

The second Magnet Regional Business Barometer study sur-veyed 540 SMEs across eight regions, including 169 in Dublin, January.

Conducted by Amárach Re-search, it revealed how a large majority are optimistic about the future, with over a third planning to open new premises. However, available skills, competition for staff from other companies and business costs were cited as ma-jor pain points for many.

The findings included:

• 79% of small firms in Dublin are optimistic about the future, up from 67% from this time last year.

• 37% of SMEs said they are likely to open new premises, the highest of all the regions and al-

most three times last year’s fig-ures (13%).

• Finding people with the right skills was cited as a key issue for 41%.

• 1 in 4 (24%) stated competi-tion from other employees as a

major recruitment challenge, the most for any region and a jump from 6% last year.

• Dublin businesses are more likely to invest in IT infrastructure with 57% stating they would.

When questioned about gov-ernment support of SMEs there was a lot of dissatisfaction.

• 56% said that the Govern-ment isn’t doing enough for SMEs. Although a significant im-provement on last year (84%), the majority still feel the Gov-ernment is underperforming for their businesses.

• Access to grants, funding or loans and reduced costs to the sector, in the form of lower taxes, rent, travel and childcare, were cited as the most popular options for ways in which the government could help SMEs.

• However, when it comes to business or technology grants a massive 89% were unaware of what is available to them.

President of the North Dublin Chamber of Commerce Stephen Kennedy said Magnet’s research is an excellent barometer for businesses in Dublin and nation-wide.

“The economic recovery ap-pears to be having positive im-pact and it’s great to see so much optimism about the future from the business community,” said Mr Kennedy.

“However, with an election looming, it’s interesting to note the continued dissatisfaction with Government support for the SME sector. Business costs and access to finance, in particular, are live issues for the SME sector

and the survey responses indi-cate that more attention needs to focused on these issues as we continue on this current path to recovery.”

Chief executive of Magnet Mark Kellett said the survey aims to shine a light on what’s important to businesses all over Ireland and find out what has changed from year to year.

“We were particularly im-pressed by the amount of busi-nesses that plan to open new premises this year compared to last year – a good indicator of a buoyant business environment,” said Mr Kellett.

“This can be an ideal time to review existing service provider offerings and negotiate better deals to reduce costs and im-prove efficiencies.”

Mark Kellett, chief executive of Magnet.▪

Having good transport is a major employment issue

A well-funded and efficiently operated transport system (yes it is possible!), not only ensures peo-ple have a reliable service to take them on nights out with friends, or visits to relatives but also connects them seamlessly with the jobs that they want and are qualified for.

International companies lo-cating in Ireland often cite our educated population as one of the main motivating factors for set-ting up here, but that advantage is null and void if these talented people can’t or won’t travel to join the business.

We may never have a perfect transport system, but as a society we have neglected the economic and social returns that emanate from having top class infrastruc-ture.

No one in Dublin should have to commute more than an hour or so to work in any other part of the city or county and companies should have a reasonable expecta-tion that when they take the risk of setting up a business that ac-cess to the people they need is not stymied by poor transport connec-tivity - if they don’t they may look elsewhere.

Investment in public transport is not a luxury, but a necessity for Ireland and is furthermore a hugely productive investment that makes a country more attractive place to do business (attracting more jobs and indeed creating jobs itself).

Cormac Spencer

LUAS workers recently carried out strikes in their pursuit of higher remuneration. While I don’t seek to take any side in the events in question, the dis-ruption caused to many people and workers crystallised some-thing in my mind - the immea-surable value to a society and economy of an efficient, regular and user-friendly public trans-port system.

Working in recruitment, I know that one of the major stumbling blocks to finding a suitable candi-date for a job is their proximity to the role. Find me someone who is willing to commute from Skerries to Sandyford and I will find you someone with an overzealous pen-chant for drive time radio! Candi-dates rightly don’t want to have to undertake a two or three-hour

round trip to get to work each day, not to mention shell out the funds necessary to do so.

Such punishing commutes turn people off applying for jobs which can benefit their lives, thus put-ting them at a disadvantage as well as hindering companies seek-ing the right people to help their business succeed.

The Government recently un-veiled a multi-billion euro capital expenditure programme for trans-port due to run over the next five years.

Most of it (Metro North, ex-tension of the DART) had been flagged well in advance of the announcement and indeed were projects shelved at the start of the recession.

While the plan is certainly wel-come, it only begins to meet the level of investment needed in pub-lic transport in Dublin and around the country.

Job candidates rightly don’t want to have to undertake a two or three-hour round trip to get to work each day. PIC POSED ▪

The Shipyard, Malahide, c. 1950. Since the early 1900s Malahide always had a small boatyard. This built some fine wooden yachts, but the boatyard mainly concentrated on the repair and maintenance of local yachts and fishing boats. In the 1950s, when the yard came under new ownership, it was decided to focus on building new Malahide Trawler Yachts. This venture was very successful. Sales gradually increased so that, by the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were boom times for the yard, which trebled in size. However, in the later 1970s, oil crises, inflation and cheaper competitors in the Far East reversed the trend and the shipyard declined, finally closing in 1983. A large apartment complex now stands on the site, over looking a 300 berth marina.

Killiney Castle Hotel, c. 1950. The hotel was originally called ‘Mount Malpas’ after Colonel John Malpas, who built the house in 1740. It has had many owners since, who have made various changes, but it was Robert Warren, in 1840, who added the mock medieval corner towers, turrets and battlements. The tower entrance and doorway was built by Thomas Higgin in 1872.
