last week’s welcome news that Metro north is to finally proceed after being shelved four years ago has been tempered by estimations that it will be 12 years before the first tram arrives.

Building of the new Northside transport system is not expected to begin until 2021, with a completion date for the 17km light rail line predicted for 2026/27.

The route will serve key local areas including Drumcondra, the Mater Hospital, DCU and Ballymun in addition to Dublin Airport and Swords, with a journey time of 19 minutes from O’Connell Street to the Airport.

Almost 8.5km of the €2.4 billion route will run in

tunnels from St Stephen’s Green to Griffith Avenue and under the airport.

Metro North is a key element of the Government’s €27 billion Capital Investment Plan and while its announcement was broadly welcomed by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), its Director General, Tom Parlon, expressed some concerns.

“There is a realisation in the construction industry that many of the projects listed have moved from previous plans to this one, while other projects are a long way from ever seeing a shovel in the ground,” he said.

“The undertakings announced will need to be accompanied by a detailed breakdown of the planned investment programme per region, and concrete

timeframes to provide the certainty that the construction industry now requires.”

Dublin North West TD Dessie Ellis (SF) said that while plans for Metro North were welcome, there were questions that needed to be answered.

“The Government has given no indication as to how they are proposing to develop these plans, leaving the impression that the announcing of earmarked funds is more about electioneering,” he added.

“Plans for a metro in Dublin have been consistently pushed back by government after government over the past 20 years with €150 million spent on this project to date.

“It is extremely disappointing to hear that building will not commence until 2021 – a full term after the lifetime of this Government - with 2027 the projected completion date. Sinn Féin has major concerns regarding further delays.”

Metro North was one of six transport options under consideration to link Dublin Airport to the city.

Deputy Ellis has suggested that one of these proposals, for a Swiftway or Bus Rapid

Transit (BRT) service, could still be implemented as an interim solution until Metro North is ready.

BRT is a relatively new cost-effective concept based on providing high capacity bus transport through a more efficient system than conventional Quality Bus Corridors.

Another Dublin North West TD, Róisin Shortall (SD), also expressed scepticism over Metro North.

“The announcement this week that a revised Metro North is now back in planning is welcome but the fundamental question remains - will it ever be built?” she asked.

Deputy Shortall believes that new proposals of running trams on the road rather than underground through Ballymun and the junction at Collins Avenue and Glasnevin Avenue won’t work.

“There are already huge traffic tail-backs at junctions along Ballymun Road,” she said.

“Stopping traffic to allow a tram to run through every two minutes is going to make the situation impossible, and it will mean even more rat-running through local estates.

“It simply won’t work without a longer tunnel that takes trams past these busy junctions.”

Despite the lengthy wait for Metro North, confirmation that the rail project is back on track was welcomed by Dublin Airport officials and city business representatives.

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) chief executive, Kevin Toland, said a rail link to the city centre was an essential element of Dublin Airport’s long-term growth plans.

“We have been highly supportive of the plans for a rail link from Dublin Airport to the city for many years,” he added.

“We welcome the fact that the new Metro service will be underground at the airport as this will allow an efficient transfer of passengers from the Metro to the terminals and vice versa.

“Dublin Airport has reserved land for a Metro station close to the passenger terminals and we look forward to working closely with the National Transport Authority and other agencies to bring the new Metro North service to the airport.”

Dublin Chamber CEO, Gina Quin, described Metro North as a win-win for both commuters who travel between north county Dublin and the city centre each

day, and international travellers.“Currently, one third of all

people commuting into the city by private car are coming from points to the north and north-east of Dublin,” she pointed out.

“Other options which had been under consideration would have left commuters with much longer commute times, which would have lessened the chances of them opting for public transport as opposed to the private car.”

DublinTown, the business improvement organisation for Dublin City Centre, said the new light rail system would see Dublin maintain its position as a leading European Capital into the future.

“We are particularly pleased to see the project will guarantee the capacity required to connect the airport and North Dublin to the city centre indefinitely,” a spokesperson said.

Five Metro North facts• Metro North will have 14 stops, six of which are underground

• The system will have a frequency of up to 30 trams per hour, per direc-tion - a tram every two minutes in each direction

• Trams will be 60 metres long – 50 per cent longer than current Luas trams

• The system will carry over 30 million passengers per year

• The project will gener-ate over 3,500 jobs during the construction phase

Students help out Cabra charityA NEW charity set-up in Cabra is capturing the hearts of local students, and helping impover-ished communities on an island off the coast of Africa.

Madagascar is known mostly from the popular animated mov-ies for kids or as a dream holiday destination but hidden beneath its beauty lies a dark secret.

Hundreds of the island’s men, women and children live on rub-bish dumps, eking out a living by recycling what they can for less than 50 cent a day.

It’s a far cry from the paradise presented in the popular Mada-gascar movies and a sight the island’s tourists never get to see.

However, local husband and wife, Bernard and Marie Neary, experienced close-up the reality of life for the rubbish-dwellers when they spent three months volunteering there.

Teenagers working the dump start at dawn, waiting for the rubbish trucks to arrive, so they can search for metal to sell in the city.

Elderly women collect bottle-tops, plastic, bits of scrap, wire and even bones that are crushed and sold as fertilizer. Nothing goes to waste.

When they returned to Ireland the Nearys spread the word on what was happening on Mada-gascar, which is the size of France with a population of 22 million.

Last February, a group of those

touched by the plight of the is-landers founded DEIS (Develop-ment Education Ireland Sharing) Madagascar Ltd. The Irish mean-ing for ‘Deis’ is opportunity.

The charity is now fundrais-ing to build, and fully furnish, a new two-classroom building in Madagascar, in association with a respected, local NGO there, Madagascar Development Fund (MDF).

The story has also touched the students of Cabra Community Col-lege, who did an excellent project on the dumps last year and took a special shine to Madagascar.

They recently volunteered to put their words into action by taking part in bag-pack at Tesco Cabra for DEIS Madagascar.

The students and staff bag-packed at the checkouts from 10.30am until 4pm, with DEIS Madagascar volunteers taking over until 6pm.

The students, in their school uniforms, were energetic and enthusiastic and cheerfully bag-packed for most of the day.

And their efforts, along with the generosity of Tesco Cabra in facilitating DEIS Madagascar, resulted in donations totalling €667.88, which will go towards the school-building project in Madagascar.

DEIS Madagascar want to thank Cabra Community College, especially students Katelyn, Pe-ter, Trinity, Niamh, Tristan, Na-dine and Alex.

WOULDN’T it be great if we had a Government that could announce ambitious capital spending plans at the beginning of their term in office rather than in the dying months of

the administration?

Not in Ireland, though. We get five years of Fine Gael and Labour blaming Fianna Fáil for all the country’s ills as they duly proceeded with all the puni-tive austerity measures agreed with the Troika before they came to power.

We’ve all had our pockets picked thanks to USC, property tax and water charges.

Homeless people are dying on the streets while families are forced to live in emergency accommodation.

Those reliant on the private rental sector face continued insecurity and uncertainty.

Frontline staff in our A&E depart-ments are completely overwhelmed by the demands placed on them on a daily

basis as patients languish on trolleys in hospital corridors.

But like a gambler let loose on a stag night in Vegas, the Government sud-denly has a €27 billion wad of cash that it needs to blow.

Most areas previously neglected by the State - from housing and policing to health and transport - will benefit from their munificence.

Naturally there are terms and condi-tions attached. The capital plan is of course predicated on the coalition being re-elected if it’s to continue on its spending spree.

It won’t happen overnight, such is

the scale of their ambition. One of my colleagues, now aged in his early 50s, ruefully remarked that he’ll be close to availing of the free travel scheme by the time Metro North passes by his door.

Even the much heralded announce-ment of the extension of the DART to Balbriggan could turn out to be some-thing of a damp squib.

There is already a reasonably ef-ficient commuter service operating on this line that will no doubt have to be downgraded when the line is electrified between now and 2022. Wouldn’t it just be cheaper to invest in more rolling stock and improve the service we have?

Whoever forms the next Government, it would be refreshing if they could set out their stall as early as possible. That way, we will be able to effectively judge them on their record when they stand for re-election in five years’ time.

In fairness, Ireland may well be better positioned to invest in a capital spending programme now than it was in 2011.

Perhaps I am being over cynical in suggesting that last week’s big announcement was simply a blatant example of electioneering at its finest.

I would genuinely love to be proven wrong.

The plan to extend the DART service could turn out to be a damp squib. FILE PHOTO▪

Gardaí, supported by the Road Safety Authority, Luas and Dublin Bus, will be focusing on traffic lights during October and Novem-ber as part of the Safer Roads for Dublin campaign.

There are 1,620 sets of traffic lights in the Dublin region and Gardaí say road users are putting themselves at risk by driving, cycling or crossing through red

Last year 4,970 motorists were detected breaking red lights. So far this year, there have been 2,662 detections.

IBM jobs boostIBM is to create approximately 110 new jobs in its Dublin 15 base through an expansion of its operations, it was an-nounced last week.

The new roles will be in soft-ware engineering, and will add to the company’s significant opera-tions at its tech campus in Dam-astown.

The news was welcomed by Tánaiste and Labour TD for Dub-lin West, Joan Burton, who was present at the announcement.

The news comes in the middle of Jobs Week 2015, which saw numerous career fairs, employer events and job training events taking place around the county.

It also coincided with another fall in the national unemploy-ment rate, which is now 9.4 per cent and down by 28,100 from

September of last year.Commenting on the IBM jobs

announcement, Tánaiste Joan Burton said: “This is the latest chapter in IBM’s success story in Dublin West.

“The company’s Irish presence has just grown and grown since its arrival here.

“I understand the expansion will mean approximately 110 new high-value jobs created in software engineering roles.

“I’m delighted that recruit-ment for graduate and expe-rienced computer scientists is expected to start in the coming weeks.

“The expansion announce-ment is another very significant statement of confidence in Dub-lin West as a hub that supports cutting-edge companies and helps them to grow.”

ST DOMINIC’S College, Cabra, recently welcomed back more than 20 super stu-dents who achieved outstanding results in their Leaving Certificate this year.

The students were presented with awards by school principal, Ann Donnelly, on Friday, September 25.

“We are proud of all our Leaving Cert students and the results were particularly good this year,” she said.

“Three students achieved over 600 points, 19 had over 500 and five achieved a Distinction in Leaving Certificate Ap-plied.”

The students have now moved on to

study medicine, dentistry, science, arts, law, languages, primary teaching and many other courses.

In recent years a large number of St Dominic’s students have progressed onto Trinity College, DCU, Maynooth University and St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra.

The past pupils who returned recently for their awards had a lot of good advice for the current crop of sixth year students at St Dominic’s.

They told them to keep a balance between study and leisure, to look after their health, listen to teachers’ advice, set themselves a goal to aim for, do their homework and choose their CAO course

carefully. The sixth years listened with great

interest and later, after the award pre-sentations, had an opportunity to talk directly with the past pupils and ask them questions.

“There is a proud tradition of Dominican Education in Cabra for almost 200 years and we continue to offer a broad academic curriculum and a wide variety of extra-curricular activities including hockey, basketball, athletics, debating, choir and creative writing,” Principal Donnelly said.

St Dominic’s College is a catholic school in the Dominican tradition and is under the trusteeship of Le Cheile Schools Trust.

Top prize for Blakestown water savers

to highlighting the importance of water conservation and of safe-guarding its use. I would really encourage other schools in the area to get involved. It really has been an education—for all of us!”

Leading environmentalist and ambassador for Global Ac-tion Plan’s Water Explorer pro-gramme, Duncan Stewart, con-gratulated the pupils on their great success.

“I want to say a big ‘well done’ to the pupils of Blakestown Com-munity School on their fantastic achievement,” he said.

“They have set a wonderful example for all of us to follow in recognising the importance of water conservation and taking personal responsibility in making

The National Water Explorer Programme 2015 focused on pu-pils aged 8-14 years in an effort to help them develop their un-derstanding of how water affects lives, and how they can develop practical ideas to protect and save water in school communities.

The Blakestown pupils were announced as winners of the programme and took home a spe-cially-commissioned trophy and framed certificate following an awards ceremony held recently at the Axis Theatre, Ballymun.

The award honours the pu-pils for their outstanding efforts across the whole programme in taking action to protect and con-serve fresh water. They also ex-celled in the areas of awareness-

raising and community outreach.During the last school year,

Blakestown Community School saved a total of 9,916 litres of wa-ter—an outstanding achievement.

Teacher Shauna Keyes said the pupils were thrilled to receive the accolade.

“They take the mantle of water explorer very seriously and are truly over the moon to win this award,” she said.

“By taking part in the pro-gramme, not only have we found ways to reduce our water foot-print at school, but pupils have also spread that knowledge far and wide into their homes and the local community.

“They intend to continue to be ambassadors for the cause and

“That is why we need to act now. By each of us making our own small but vital contribution, together we can make a big dif-ference to the world in which we live.”

Vanessa Moore, Chief Ex-ecutive, Global Action Plan, also praised the Dublin 15 pupils for becoming a new generation of water-conscious citizens.

“Access to clean water is one of the most urgent problems of our time,” she said.

“As water explorers, pupils at Blakestown Community School have seen for themselves the importance and value of water and have undergone a process of personal discovery around this

precious resource.“We are so proud for what

they have achieved and for be-ing leaders among their peers in championing the importance of water to life as we know it and the need to preserve it for future generations.”

Schools are now being encouraged to sign up for the Water Explorer 2016 programme, which has just been launched. More details can be found at www.waterexplorer.ie.

Gettingrid of that stress and anxietyWendy Quinn

MOST of us feel stressed or anxious at different times in our lives - looking for work, an exam, moving house, giving a presenta-tion/speech, social situa-tions, relationships etc.

Stress can come from a sit-uation that makes us feel ner-vous or overwhelmed. Anxi-ety can come from feelings of fear, worry and constant negative thinking. Stress and anxiety can come and go. However, if you are feeling helpless, overwhelmed, un-able to concentrate or focus or having difficulty coping with life, then it is time to get help.

If you are avoiding situa-tions or events because of irrational fears or constant worrying, it is time to do something about it.

How do you know if you are stressed or anxious? Muscle ache, headaches, stomach upset, palpitations, dizziness, rapid breathing, tiredness, sweating, diarrhea. Often we cannot sleep, our blood pres-sure rises and we are con-stantly thinking the worst, feeling irritable, angry, sad, restless and/or insecure.

This can lead to avoid-ance, overeating, drinking too much, smoking more or abusing drugs. Everyone re-acts differently. There is no need to continue suffering. Using an innovative approach by learning to manage stress and anxiety you can feel calm, relaxed and in control when there is stress around you. Practice proven psycho-logical tools and techniques to overcome anxiety and fear. Feel freer and increase your confidence; learn how to re-act differently and make posi-tive changes in your life now. Increase concentration and focus, sleep better and take that important step to long term, permanent change.

don’t cut anything out, I can still have all my favourite treats.”

Jo’s husband also embraced the new way of life. As they both began to shed weight they found a new love for exercise and both are keen runners now. Their eldest child Chloe is very proud of her mother.

“When I hug my mammy I can fit my arms all the way around her now,” Chloe says.

Jo adds: “If you ask my son what he’d like to eat, he will ask for mel-on. I love that they love fruit”

Such is her passion for Slimming World and the difference it has made to her life, Jo is opening her own group on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm in Coolmine Community School, Dublin 15.

“I want to help as many people as I can feel as happy as I do,” she declared. “Everyone deserves their happy photo. I’m so excited to become a part of this amazing concept.”

Having lost 2.5 stone, she now runs up to 40km per week and has even run some half marathons - just because she can! She is look-ing forward to a happy, healthy, slimmer future.

The 39-year-old joined her local Slimming World group following a recommendation from a friend.

“I was so nervous walking into the room on my first night, but straight away I felt at ease,” Jo re-members.

At first she found it very hard to believe that she could eat as much as she wanted to, never go hungry and still lose weight. A hopeful Jo embarked on a journey that would change her life. Still able to eat her favourite foods, such as lasagne and chips, and with the help of Food Optimising, Jo was also intro-duced to a whole new and varied menu.

“The support I gained at the group was also key,” she added. “The motivation, help and encour-agement from my fellow slimmers was invaluable. I never felt judged and it’s a great social gathering too.

“Each week I came away in-spired and more often than not with another recipe to try at home.”

Her friends started to notice a change in the way Jo was dress-ing.

“Skinny jeans,” Jo says enthusi-astically. “I can wear them in any colour - and they fit.”

She is adamant she still eats chocolate and cake.

THE Multi-Platinum and multi-million selling artist Josh Gro-ban has confirmed that he will conclude the European leg of his ‘Stages’ our with a Dublin date at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on May 29.

‘Stages’ is Groban’s seventh studio album and his highest charting album to date in Ire-land, coming in at No 2 in the Irish charts. It is his first UK No 1 album.

Renowned for his show-steal-ing guest appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Groban marked the album’s UK release with a performance and inter-view on The One Show which was

followed by appear-ances on The Paul O’Grady Show, Loose Women and Sunday Night At The Palladium.

‘Stages’ is a collection of some of the greatest musical theatre songs of all time, which Groban describes as “gorgeously ar-ranged songs that have stood the

test of time,” and which he was drawn to because of their com-bination of “incredible melody with an incredible story”.

Recorded with producers Hum-berto Gatica and Bernie Herms in both Los Angeles and London’s Abbey Road (with a 75-piece or-

chestra), ‘Stages’ features songs from musicals including Les Mi-sérables (‘Bring Him Home’); Car-ousel (‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’); Into the Woods (‘Children Will Listen’); Phantom of the Opera (‘All I Ask of You’) and The Wizard of Oz (‘Over the Rainbow’).

‘Stages’ features three duets: Kelly Clarkson is featured on ‘All I Ask of You’ (“she can, quite simply, do anything”); Audra Mc-Donald sings on ‘If I Loved You’ (“in my head I heard her on this and to sing it in the room with her was a dream come true”); and trumpeter Chris Botti plays on ‘Old Devil Moon’ (“he plays with such control and expres-siveness”).

I’ll be sad to see Downton Abbey come to an end.The hit TV series has returned to our screens for its sixth and final season.Apparently when filming ended the cast and crew were in tears.

X Factor winner Ben Haenow’s teaming up with Kelly Clarkson on his next single. He confirmed the song called Second Hand Heart, will be out early next month. Meanwhile, Ben’s debut self-titled album will be released on November 13.I actually forgot who won last year!

Sam Smith’s James Bond theme song ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ may have divided opinion, but he can definitely count on Alesha Dixon as a fan. The song’s on course to become the first 007 track to reach num-ber one in the charts. Alesha told Dublin’s Q102 that she thinks the track’s taken Bond songs to another level.Am I the only one that thinks it sounds like your average Bond tune?

Sigourney Weaver becomes the latest cast member from the origi-nal Ghostbusters movie to join the reboot, along with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson. Director Paul Feig made the announcement via Twitter. The new star studded take on the 1984 classic which is due out in 2016 stars Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon.

UB40 legends to delight fans with 3arena dateUB40 return to the 3Arena next year with a greatest hits show that will see them performing their classic albums Labour of Love 1 & 2.

Hear the voice of UB40’s Ali Campbell perform the classics ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Cherry O Baby’, ‘Many Rivers To Cross’, ‘Please Don’t Make Me Cry’, ‘Here I Am, Come and Take Me’, ‘Kingston Town’ and all the rest as he is backed by a 14-piece band.

Ali, as well as Astro and Micky Virtue are back on top of the game with this new squad and they promise a special night out for all lovers of reggae as they play all their hits as well as their covers of the songs that inspired them.

Formed in 1978 in Birming-ham, the band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international suc-cess. They have been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984 were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group.

One of the world’s best-sell-ing music artists, UB40 have sold over 70 million records.

The band members began as friends who knew each other from various schools across Bir-mingham. The name UB40 was selected in reference to the sign-ing-on document issued to people claiming unemployment benefit from the UK government’s De-partment of Employment at the time of the band’s formation.

The designation UB40 stood for Unemployment Benefit, Form

40. The UB40 no longer exists, although the term is still well understood to refer to unemploy-ment claims in the UK.

The ethnic makeup of the band’s original line-up was di-verse, with musicians of English, Scottish, Irish, Yemeni and Ja-maican parentage.

The band’s line-up remained unchanged for 30 years, from its formation in 1978 until Janu-

ary 2008, when front man Ali Campbell left the band, followed shortly thereafter by keyboardist Mickey Virtue.

Another member, Astro, re-mained with the band until No-vember 2013, when he departed the original line up to team up with Campbell and Virtue in a new version of UB40.

They will take the stage in the 3Arena on Saturday, April 23

Moving house with your dogCorina Fitzsimons

MOVING house can be stress-ful for everyone involved, in-cluding your dog.

As well as coping with all of the upheaval during the move, it’ll take weeks for him to get used to a new territory and strange smells in the new house. Although you’ll be very busy with little time, please bear in mind the following to help make it easier and safer for him. If your dog is staying with you during the move then confine him to one secure room, so that escape and in-jury cannot occur to him while people are going in and out of the house.

Leave him in a quiet area with his familiar, unwashed bed and possessions. Make sure he has an ID tag on his collar with your up-to-date contact details on it.

Also make sure that he is safely secured in the car or ve-hicle that he is to be transport-ed in to the new house with a dog guard, travel crate or car harness on the back seat.

If it is a long journey, make sure that he gets regular toilet and water breaks.

In the new home check your boundary fencing to make sure that it is secure, of sufficient

DOGS TRUST CANINE COLUMN

height and ‘hole-free’ before letting your dog run free in the garden.

If your dog is able to escape then take him out on a lead until you are able to do the necessary improvements.

Try to unpack the essentials before introducing your dog to the new house so that he can see familiar items within the unfamiliar house. If possible,

place furniture and items in similar places to those in the old house.

Be patient with your dog in the new home and make al-lowances for ‘accidents’ on the carpet if they should happen. Don’t make a fuss, don’t punish your dog or draw his attention to accidents, as this may make the problem worse.

Quietly pick up the mess and clean the area with a biological solution or special cleaner from the vets or pet shop to properly remove the smell. Once your dog has settled in they should stop.

Always praise him when he goes to toilet in the correct place (outside!) so that he knows where to go. Make sure that you stick to your usual routines, as this will help him to settle - feed and walk him at the usual times.

Don’t give him more or less attention than he is used to having from you as this may cause him to become anxious or over dependent on you and lead to behaviour problems.

Europe campaign for domestic petsOVER 30 MEPSs and 11 animal welfare organisations from across the EU were at the Euro-pean Parliament last month to lobby for new welfare legisla-tion for dogs and cats.

It was the first event from the EU Dog & Cat Alliance, which is particularly concerned in relation to commercial practices in animal welfare for domestic pets.

Throughout the day, which took place on September 22, members of the Alliance had in-depth meetings with the MEPs.

Currently, national legislation varies greatly across EU member states, with strict legislation in some countries and little at all in others.

The situation can have serious consequences for animal welfare, but also for animal health, hu-man health, consumer protection and the functioning of the inter-nal market.

There are an estimated 61 mil-lion owned dogs and 66 million owned cats in the EU, but there is very little EU legislation to pro-tect their welfare.

Mark Beazley, executive direc-tor with Dublin based Dogs Trust, and Dr Andrew Kelly, CEO of the ISPCA, both attended the event from Ireland.

“We were delighted to attend and represent Ireland in the European Parliament,” said Mr Beazley. “It was extremely en-couraging to see so many MEPs from all across the EU join us to collectively call for EU action to better protect the welfare of dogs and cats.”

Findings of an EU study are ex-pected in November.

Coast has just launched its new Autumn Winter 2015 collection. The pieces in the new collection are extremely on trend, for example this gorgeous Clena Fringe top is all over the catwalks for this season and is one of my favourite in the collection. It can be styled for both a casual or dressy look, ensuring you get value for money with multiple wears. This top can be paired with these beautiful fitted Fitzroy lace trousers for an elegant and sophisticated look. The style and comfort of these trousers make them the ultimate Star Buy and the lace detail adds that little bit of extra glamour. For me you can’t go wrong with an all black outfit but to add a little pop of colour I paired the look with a gorgeous cream Ellie envelope clutch bag from the new collection also. See in-store or online at www.coast-stores.com

Over the years I’ve heard so much about Great Lengths Hair Extensions, as so many celebrities have them and they look fantastic but I was always afraid to take the plunge. I met with Cathriona Rohan, hairdresser to the stars and she totally put my mind at ease. She talked me through the process and what makes Great Lengths different to its competitors. The hair is 100 per cent human hair and is donated from ladies in India. The hair is tied in a ponytail which keeps all hair in same direction while it is being transported. This is really important as the cuticles are all in the same direction, reducing tangling and making sure it keeps its shine. The Great Lengths are attached to hair with keratin bonds, and these bonds are the kindest to hair and cause no damage as our own hair is made up of keratin. Great Lengths normally last between 4-6 months and I was delighted with the results. For further information see www.cathrionashairsalon.com.

With winter approaching, the wind, cold temperatures and even heavy clothing can intensify the skin’s level of dryness, leaving it feeling tight and uncomfortable. Those who suffer from dry skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, may find that it tends to get worse during the winter. The hydration of the skin depends on how water is held in the outer layer of the skin. Maintaining this hydration is a key part of enabling the skin to act as a protective barrier against the environment. Moisturisers or emollients help to restore the hydration of the outer layer of skin, and act as a protective coating. Many people benefit from a moisturiser with a richer consistency during the winter months. Hydraphase UV Intense Riche contains Hyaluronic Acid Fragments to lock in water and provide ultra long-lasting hydration. It’s also important to remember to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays. Hydraphase UV Intense Riche’s filtering system helps protect skin against damages caused by daily exposure to UVA & UVB rays. Available from selected pharmacies nationwide.

House price inflation is expected to slow

The survey, compiled in association with Davy, also predicts that annual house price inflation will slow to five per cent by December.

Asking prices on new instructions – which pro-vide the best leading indicator for actual transac-tion prices - actually fell by 0.1 per cent in Dublin in Q3, the first such decline in asking prices in almost three years. Nationally asking prices for new sales rose by 1.8 per cent.

According to the survey the mix adjusted ask-ing price for new sales in Dublin is €312K while the corresponding national figure is €217K, up 1.6 per cent.

For the entire stock of properties listed for sale the national mix adjusted figure is €205K while in Dublin the corresponding figure is €286K, up 1.5 pre cent. The percentage change year on year for new sales is 4.8 per cent in Dublin and six per cent nationally.

The price of a three bed semi in Dublin remained unchanged in Q3 at €280K while the price of a four bed semi fell 1.6 per cent to €400K. The price of a two bed apartment also remained unchanged but remains up 12.5 per cent for the year.

While the MyHome.ie data suggests Dublin house prices will remain relatively stable over the short term, Dublin south city was still up 20 per cent in the year to Q3 2015 while Dublin south is up 15 per cent. Dublin north prices were up 4.2 per cent on the year after a 6.4 per cent rise in Q2. Dublin north city saw asking prices up just 2.3 per cent on the year, the smallest rise in the city.

Author of the report, Conall MacCoille, Chief Economist at Davy, said he expects house price in-flation to slow to five per cent by December, with a similar gain likely in 2016.

He believes stretched affordability, the Central Bank’s mortgage lending rules and an improving stock of homes available for sales are cooling price rises, particularly in Dublin.

“The house price to income ratio in Dublin – based on a median asking price of €280K for a three bed semi-detached house is now a 6.1 multiple of aver-age incomes of €46K,” MacCoille continued.

“While the ratio varies from five in the mid-east to a low of 2.8 in the midlands, the overall figure is 5.3 which is high by international standards.

“The Central Bank’s new lending rules have pre-vented first time buyers in Dublin from taking out ever higher mortgages – the 20 per cent + rates of inflation of the Summer of 2014 were simply not sustainable – and this is a positive.

“The fact that the number of properties avail-able for sale in Dublin is up 45 per cent to 5,200

compared to this time last year, has also acted as a further brake on price growth.”

However MacCoille believes a sustained decline is unlikely.

“Wage growth coupled with tax cuts in Budget 2016 will help to support house price inflation,” he explained. “Private sector earnings grew by 2.4 per cent in the first half of the year and Budget 2016 looks set to include a €1.2 to €1.5bn giveaway that could boost disposable incomes by one per cent.

“These measures and the ongoing lack of hous-ing supply and strong rental inflation will support transaction prices and that is why we are guiding the five per cent figure.”

Angela Keegan, Managing Director of MyHome.ie, said Government action to address the lack of supply of new homes in certain areas, particularly in Dublin, is sorely needed.

“There were 6,745 housing completions in the first seven months of 2015,” she continued.

“While this is up 16 per cent from the same pe-riod of 2014 the figures are coming off a very low base and will probably struggle to exceed 13,000 this year, well short of the 25,000 required.

“The low level of new builds needs to be ad-dressed by Government through initiatives on plan-ning, the freeing up of development land and the removal of inappropriate levies and charges on residential developments.

“The fact rents are just 0.5 per cent below their previous peak and that cash buyers account for 50 per cent of transactions shows the urgency of ad-dressing the supply side of the equation.”

THE trend of moderate house price growth evi-dent in the first half of 2015 has continued into Q3 according to the latest house price survey from MyHome.ie.

Annual house price inflation is expected to slow to five per cent by December.▪

initiatives designed to improve maths skills and to introduce po-tential students to university life through student shadowing and campus visits.

Many of these services are supported by graduates and cor-porate organisations. In addition to providing financial support for current students, they support outreach programmes including the Citi Financing Your Career ini-tiative and the AOL Maths Com-petition, which brought together 300 second-level students in DCU this year to promote the value of maths skills. Pat Burke, partner at Grant Thornton and gradu-ate of DCU, told attendees at the event that he has provided long-term support for the programme so that young people can con-tinue to access the opportunities afforded by a DCU education.

CEO of the Educational Trust, Steve Aiken, added: “Our sup-porters provide funding for the programme because it trans-forms the lives of students, their families and their communities.

“When given the opportunity, DCU’s Access students excel in

university, with a higher propor-tion of Access students achieving first and second class honours degrees and experiencing a high-er retention rate compared to the general student population.”

DCU’s Access graduates have

gone on to work in a variety of professional sectors around the world including David Dowling who graduated with a BSc in Bio-technology in 2005 and is now a research fellow at Harvard Medi-cal School and a Project Man-

The programme is the first and largest of its kind in Ireland and enables students from back-grounds of socio-economic disad-vantage to complete a third-level education.

Students and graduates of the programme joined Profes-sor Brian MacCraith, President of DCU, Steve Aiken, CEO of the DCU Educational Trust and the university’s community of sup-porters at the breakfast to mark the milestone anniversary of the programme.

DCU Business School graduate, Shauna Bonner, from Co Done-gal, who now works as an assis-tant HR manager in Deloitte, and third year Aviation Management student Ryan Graham, from San-dyford, told the audience how the Access Scholarship Programme made it possible for them to pur-sue a university qualification.

“I always had a passion for flight and aircraft and my eyes lit up when I found out about the

course I’m currently on, especial-ly when I realised the Access Pro-gramme could make it possible for me to attend DCU,” said Ryan. “The in-depth knowledge and on-the-job learning I have experi-enced in my first two years in the course would have been unimagi-nable before I came to DCU.”

DCU pioneered Ireland’s first access route to higher education in 1990, with just six students. Today it provides equal access to education for over 1,000, who come from socio-economically disadvantaged areas, including students from ethnic minorities and the Traveller community.

The Access Service provides financial, academic and personal support to the students, in addi-tion to managing a range of out-reach programmes designed to connect with 10,000 primary and second-level students in schools with low levels of progression to university.

INTO sets out its stall at political briefingtHe Irish National teachers’ organisation (INto) set out its roadmap for Budget 2016 and the upcoming general election at a recent briefing event for tds and senators.

The INTO’s ‘Stand up for Pri-mary Education’ campaign sets out a vision for primary educa-tion in Ireland with key areas of focus being smaller class sizes, increased funding and greater support for school leaders.

Speaking at the briefing event, Sheila Nunan, General Secretary of the INTO, said: “Ireland is in a new phase of growth and now is the time to be investing in pri-mary education.

“Not everyone will complete secondary education or go to uni-versity, but almost every child in Ireland will attend primary edu-cation, and every child should be given the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential.

“This means smaller classes, which will allow teachers to sup-port each child individually, and well-funded schools with profes-sional, dedicated teachers who are led and supported by excel-lent school leaders.

“Early investment will reap real rewards for society and for the economy.”

Classes in Irish primary schools are among the most overcrowded in the EU, with an average of 25

I was getting admiring glances in the Jaguar XE

for the X-Type and XF. We don’t get many British-built

cars in Ireland nowadays,+ apart from Nissans which are assem-bled in Sunderland. Jaguar and Land Rover, who are now both owned by Indian company Tata, are built near Birmingham.

When you sit in the steering wheel drops down when you press the start button. I drove an automatic version which was naturally a joy to travel in. And fuel consumption was excellent, considering that I did a lot of driving during the early morn-ing and evening rush hours on

the clogged up streets along the Grand Canal. The reversing cam-era was excellent and there is also a button to turn on the cam-era while you are driving. I sup-pose it’s always nice to see who is in your slip stream. The version I drove had reversing sensors and the side mirrors moved up and down when reversing to give greater visibility.

On the road this is a very com-fortable motor to travel in, but like the Mercedes Shooting Brake the previous week, my front seat passengers thought the roofl ine was a bit low. Jaguar has high hopes for this new rear-wheel sa-loon as they compete with great rivals Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

During the week I had the XE I spent a night at the luxurious Kelly’s Hotel in Rosslare where the Jaguar certainly didn’t look out of place in a car park full of Mercs, Volvos and Beemers.

Prices start at €38,995, while

the 2.0 automatic R Sport ver-sion I drove will cost you €47,310. Road tax starts at €180 for the entry level version and rises to €200 for the model I drove. The version I drove had a lot of extras including a blind spot indicator on both wing mirrors to warn the driver of cars overtaking on the outside or inside.

And the good news is that there is a ‘mini’ spare wheel. While the front is really attractive it’s reassuring to know you have something to rely on in the back if you get a puncture.

I mentioned earlier that many male businessmen on the streets of Dublin turned their heads when they saw the XE. A few weeks back I read about two fi ve-year-old Russian boys who used their spades to dig their way out of their kindergarten and set o on a mission to buy a Jaguar sports car. Some young people have great taste!

Seán Creedon

LAST week I had the new Jag-uar XE on test and I can hon-estly say that I have never had so many curious glances from men in suits. The front of the car, with its distinctive grille, massive bonnet and Jaguar logo, certainly attracted the attention of the corporate sec-tor in Dublin 4.

I was surprised how many men stopped to admire the Jaguar and for many of the business types this was obviously their fi rst view of the XE in Ireland.

The XE is the fi rst compact ex-ecutive car Jaguar has produced since the 2009 model X-Type and it’s the fi rst of several Jaguar models to be built using Jaguar’s new modular aluminium archi-tecture, moving the company away from the Ford derived plat-forms that were used in the past

SEASONED travellers know the best place to go for local info is to the con-cierge at your hotel.

After all, it’s his (or her) job to point guests in the right direction when it comes to dining, sightseeing and shopping so generally there’s a wealth of local knowl-edge waiting to be tapped into.

With this in mind, we had a few words with the head concierge at Corus Hotel, Hyde Park, London, who told us why the English capital should be top of your list for a city break.

“London really is the perfect place to visit for a city break,” he says.

“It’s not so big as to be completely over-whelming for a first time visit, yet there is so much going on you would never run out of things to do, even on your 100th visit.

“The city is perfect for families, roman-tic breaks, business trips, cultural pil-grimages, or for those simply looking to indulge in London’s unrivalled food, drink and nightlife scene.”

Here are his top five recommendations and personal tips on how to make the most of London.

1. ThE grEEN SpAcESThe parks are perhaps one of the city’s

best-loved spaces by Londoners them-selves. Venture into Richmond Park for a taste of the English countryside, or Hamp-stead Heath with its public swimming lake and amazing views.

We are lucky enough to be situated just across the road from Hyde Park, which is the largest of the royal parks in London, and home to a number of famous land-marks including the Serpentine Lake, Speakers’ Corner and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.

Hyde Park also offers various recre-ational activities including open water swimming, boating, cycling, tennis and horse riding, and hosts events ranging from Gay Pride to rock concerts and Proms in the Park.

– so now is the perfect time to book an audio or guided tour with afternoon Tea.

For art lovers, the National Portrait Gal-lery is currently home to an extraordinary Audrey Hepburn exhibition, celebrating one of Britain’s most iconic film stars.

4. FOOD, glOriOuS FOODLondon is home to a dizzying array of

amazing restaurants, from Michelin star meccas to tiny artisan coffee shops produc-ing life-changing cakes.

A good way to experience more than just one of them at a time is to go to one of the city’s now iconic street food markets. The hip Street Feast is located in Lewisham, Dalston and Shoreditch, or Kerb in Kings Cross is very good with hundreds of tasty food stalls offering everything from Viet-namese buns to pulled pork and BBQ ribs.

5. ThE wEirD AND wONDErFul Forget Scandi cool or Parisian chic. Vis-

iting London is all about experiencing the wonderfully bizarre eccentricity of modern Britain.

Pay a visit to Camden Lock to see punks, live music and everything in between. East London for themed cafes – cat cafe, owl cafe cereal cafe – you name it, we’ve got it.

Get a wet shave, posh afternoon tea or your shoes shined in Mayfair, or simply go and enjoy a pint of beer in a good old English pub – anywhere in the city.

Overlooking the beautiful Hyde Park, the largest of the Royal Parks in London, Corus Hotel Hyde Park is a grand white 200 year old listed Georgian building, perfectly situ-ated for guests looking to explore London.

The four-star hideaway is close to every-thing that the West End of London has to offer, from shopping in Oxford Street, Bond Street and Knightsbridge, to museums and art galleries in South Kensington and world famous visitor destinations such as Buck-ingham Palace. It’s also a short walk from Kensington Palace where the royals, Kate and William reside with their family.

Czech out Prague’s bustling nightlife and tourist sightsi am looking to get away with friends for a few days in Europe that’s fun and affordable, with a good nightlife and some at-

tractions to keep a group entertained during the day. where would you sug-gest?

PRAGuE is a great city that is sure to be ideal for a fantastic few days away. As well as being a beauti-ful, gothic and picturesque city,

Prague is widely renowned for its amazing nightlife and its extensive range of tourist activities.

There is plenty to do in Prague to keep you going during the day. Prague Castle is a premier tourist attraction where you can find palaces, cathedrals, museums and art galleries. Prague’s Zoo and Sea World are well worth a visit too.

There are many sightseeing companies available that will collect you from your hotel or the town centre and take you on a

travel

tour of various popular attractions. This fantastic facility is great as it means

you won’t have to worry about organising travel or adhering to public transport time-tables.

For something a little more exciting, how-ever, you could go go-karting, paintballing or even have a ride on a Prague bobsleigh,

which should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

As well as the many great, affordable restaurants that will offer you everything from Czech to Indian cuisine, the capital city boasts a wide ranging club scene to suit all tastes with everything from mellow jazz clubs to dance and house spots.

The Duplex Club and Café is one of the more expensive clubs in the new town, but it is unrivalled when it comes to the ultimate nightclub experience. It’s home to several bars and two chill-out areas, as well as numerous club dancers and some of the best DJs in the country.

For less than half the entrance price, however, you can go to the Karlovy Lazne club in old town which is the largest music club complex in Europe.

Each floor has its own style, from disco to dance, with enough variation to keep every-one entertained all night.

Other great spots to be experienced on your night out are Zlaty Strom Bar & Mu-

sic Club, which is a popular spot for Czech teens; disco Roxy with a massive dance floor and cool lighting and video projects; and the Lucerna Music Bar and Club which is the perfect place for a night of cheap drinks, ‘80s classics and cheesy anthems.

employmentContracts to support community centresCONTRACTS worth over €3.2 million per year to support the operation of community centres and facilities have been offered to 91 not-for-profit companies nationally.

The contracts will enable the provision of a broad range of services to improve the wellbeing of children, older people and families in disadvantaged areas or where essential services are lacking.

The contracts represent the renewal of 91 existing contracts, for periods of up to three years, from January 2016.

Minister of State at Department of Social Protection, Kevin Humphreys, said: “Nationally, we have an extensive infrastructure of community centres and facilities.

“These have been built with significant financial contributions from their communities, local authorities and State supports over the years.

“The contracts I am announcing will directly support 170 full-time positions over the coming years.

“Indirectly, over 50 more people will be provided with full-time employment from resources generated from the services delivered.”

The Community Services Programme supports the provision of employment opportunities for people from disadvantaged groups.

Minister Humphreys said these companies will work with the department in providing some 200 opportunities for jobseekers under other programmes.

“Through the delivery of quality services to our communities, rural and urban, across the country, these contracts ensure community assets are fully utilised to the benefit of all.

“I have personally seen the countless benefits that these contracts provide to people and I am very delighted that so many local groups will continue to prosper from these important contracts.”
