A NORTHSIde frontline support group is calling for the city’s homelessness problem to be de-clared a national crisis following revelations of an €18.5 million funding shortfall.
Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) are warning that services are already so stretched that people will die on Dublin’s streets this winter unless action
is taken now.And last week’s confirmation that the city’s
homeless budget has a projected deficit of over €18 million has highlighted that the problem is getting worse.
Dublin City Council has told councillors that the shortfall has been caused by a growth in house-holds becoming homeless, despite the introduction
of measures to address the situation.DCC senior management plans to allocate over
€5 million from a budget contingency fund and will seek a proportional amount from the other three Dublin Local Authorities as an interim measure to plug the deficit hole.

The disturbing incident is reminiscent of the controversial scene in the season three pre-miere of Love/Hate when a cat was gunned to death.
At the time animal rights groups criticised the graphic se-quence in which a teenage thug was seen shooting the cat and then laughing about the incident with a pal.
Campaigners warned that the scene could spark off similar inci-dents but there’s no evidence the Ballymun shooting was inspired by the gangland series.
However, even DSPCA staff used to witnessing the end results of animal cruelty were alarmed when they saw Allie’s injuries.
“What was so upsetting the staff at the DSPCA was that she was a nursing mum with four kit-tens,” said spokesperson Gillian Bird.
“She, along with her four kit-tens were brought into the DSPCA and were put in a foster home un-til the kittens were old enough to be rehomed.”
Despite losing a leg, Allie is now doing well in her foster home and will soon be available for adoption.
Allie the cat is thankfully recovering from her ordeal▪
She’s one of 160 cats and kit-tens currently under the care of the DSPCA. The charity is looking for permanent and foster homes for them.

The council has also warned the Department of Environment, Community and Local Govern-ment of the seriousness of the shortfall, and its implications for services.
ICHH Director Anthony Flynn described the amount of the shortfall as “astonishing”.
“We have a very serious prob-lem on our hands,” he added.
“The Minister is now putting lives at risk across the city and I am urging the Taoiseach to in-tervene.
“Homelessness across the city is at crisis point and has severely worsened in 2015.”
A recent head-count of the number of people availing of crisis and temporary accommo-dation found 63 new families presented as homeless in Dublin during the month of April.
The number of families resid-ing in commercial hotels in the Dublin region was 295 and De-paul charity said it worked with 116 homeless children in Dublin during the first four months of 2015, an 87 per cent increase on the same period last year.
ICHH say 75 families were made homeless in June and there was now over 1,100 children reg-istered in emergency accommo-dation.
“With the clear increase of children and families presenting as homeless we now need to de-clare a crisis.
“This can no longer be brushed under the carpet,” said Flynn who is contacting newly elected Lord Mayor, Críona Ní Dhalaigh to organise crisis talks on the issue.
“We cannot stand idly by whilst central Government puts lives at risk across our city,” he added.
Focus Ireland has also warned that the Dublin homeless budget
shortfall will put families and single people at greater risk of sleeping rough.
However the charity said it wasn’t just central Government to blame as part of the short-fall was caused by the city’s four local authorities proposing to slash their own contribution to the homeless budget from €21 million in 2014 to just €13 million this year.
“Every 50 families becom-ing homeless costs €3 million a year just to provide emergency accommodation – and more than 50 families are losing their homes each month,” said said Director of Advocacy at Focus Ireland, Mike Allen.
“We have to get a grip on this situation.
“The family homeless crisis must now be seen as a national emergency and the Government needs to fund the costs arising from this separately from the annual homelessness budget to avoid a deepening crisis.”
Fianna Fáil Group Leader on Dublin City Council, Cllr Paul McAuliffe, blamed the huge shortfall on a central Govern-ment U-turn.
“The Government need to clar-ify why they indicated last De-cember that they were willing to fund all necessary services and yet they have now left a massive €18.5 million shortfall,” said.
“The impact of this decision will mean that there will be no funding for any emergency ac-commodation in the final months of this year.
“The Minister is effectively turfing-out more than 2,000 people in emergency accommo-dation.
“The Minister must agree to our request for an all-party meeting in order to resolve this issue and ensure emergency ac-commodation remains a safety net in our capital city.”

Big boost for Bohemian FC
lighted to be involved with the redevelopment of the stadium.
“There’s a long history of Bohs integrating into the fabric of the community and we look forward to tapping into that and integrat-ing it into the Local Area Plan to give us an exciting and dynamic platform to build for everyone going forward,” he added.
Initially, Shelbourne FC had been an integral part of the coun-cil deal with a proposal for them to re-locate to Dalymount.
However, the ground share plan was met with opposition from Shels supporters and it’s un-derstood it also wasn’t possible to do a deal with developer Jerry O’Reilly, who has held a key stake in the Tolka Park since 2006.
This put the deal in jeopardy but officials from Bohs desper-ately pressed local politicians and FAI officials to find a way forward without their local rivals.
Both Bohs and the council have said the door is still open for fi-nancially crippled Shels to share the stadium at a later date.

THE future of soccer at Daly-mount Park has been secured after Bohemian Football Club members overwhelmingly rub-ber-stamped a deal for Dublin City Council to buy the ground.
Members met at an Emergency General Meeting on July 3 and voted to seal the deal that will wipe out most of the club’s debts, and effectively remove uncertain-ty about its long-term survival.
Officials had feared the North-side club would fold within months under the weight of €4 million debts, owed mainly to Zurich bank. However, Club Presi-dent, Matt Devaney, says mem-bers’ approval of the deal means fans can now look forward to a new era after years of financial fire-fighting.
“It’s been very hard work try-ing to save the club as well as run it at same time,” he said.
Devaney praised FAI chief ex-ecutive, John Delaney, for his part
in helping secure the deal.“He did a lot of hard work and
was instrumental in the deal go-ing through,” he said.
Under the €3.8 million deal, the club’s debt to Zurich will be cleared as well as some of a smaller debt owed to members. Dublin City Council will own Daly-mount Park and Bohemian FC will remain in the ground.
The council will be responsi-ble for maintaining and upgrad-ing the stadium and plans under consideration include an FAI Irish soccer museum that would be in-cluded on the routes of city sight-seeing buses.
Commercial Director, Daniel Lambert, said local politicians including Minister for Sport, Pas-chal Donohoe, and local TD, Joe Costello (Lab), had been instru-mental in helping the club move forward with the deal.
“The future for Dalymount and Bohemians hasn’t looked bright-er,” he added.

why local authorities should be found wanting when it comes to providing homeless services.
Mike Allen, Director of Advo-cacy at Focus Ireland, offered this stark assessment of the situation.
“The additional spending to date is almost entirely due to the sharp rise in family homeless-ness and the need to put over 1,000 children and their families into B&Bs and hotel rooms,” he explained. “Every 50 families becoming homeless costs €3m a year just to provide emergency accommodation – and more than 50 families are losing their homes each month.”
He added: “We have to get a grip on this situation. The family homeless crisis must now be seen as a national emergency and the Government needs to fund the costs arising from this separately from the annual homelessness budget to avoid a deepening crisis.”
While all forms of homeless-ness have continued to grow in Dublin, the crisis among families is reaching new proportions, according to the charity.

We’re all just one life event away from being homeless
THE lonely death of homeless man Jonathan Corrie across the road from Dáil Eireann last December resulted in a flurry of activity as various organs of the State were jolted into tak-ing action on the issue.
But just seven months on, we learn of an €18m shortfall in the city’s homelessness budget. Focus Ireland warned that this was putting families and single people at greater risk of sleeping rough.

or other more risky situations.Homelessness in Ireland is
an ever-evolving crisis. It is no longer just about the drug addicts, alcoholics or those flee-ing from dysfunctional family situations – equally worthy as
they are of the protection of the State.
The ranks of the homeless community have been swelled by ordinary citizens who have fallen through the cracks due to the misfortune of losing their
job, having their property repos-sessed by a financial institution or being unable to afford extor-tionate rent increases.
If we bothered engaging with homeless people on our streets instead of hurriedly walking
past them out of embarrass-ment, we might be surprised to hear how similar their back-grounds are to ours and why we are all just one unforeseen life event away from ending up like them.
Take Control of your Tinnitus!Did you know that it is estimated Tinnitus effects 250 million people worldwide, over 6 million are estimated to suffer in the UK so if you are suffering from Tinnitus, you are notalone.
So whaT exacTly iS TinniTUS?The word ‘tinnitus’ comes from
the Latin word for ‘ringing’ and is the perception of sound in the ab-sence of any corresponding exter-nal sound. This noise may beheard in one ear, in both ears or in the middle of the head or it may be dif-ficult to pinpoint its exact location. The noise may be low, medium or highpitched. There may be a single noise or two or more components. The noise may be continuous or it may come and go.
So who SUfferS from Tinni-TUS?
The precise cause of tinnitus is still not fully understood. Experi-
ences of tinnitus are very com-mon in all age groups, especially following exposure to loud noise; however, it is unusual for it to be a major problem. There is a widely held misconception that tinnitus is confined to the elderly, but vari-ous studies have shown that it can occur at any age, even in quite young children.
Mild tinnitus is common about 10 per cent of the population have it all the time and, in up to one per cent of adults, this may affect the quality of their life. Audiologists at Connect Hearing have been work-ing closely with Tinnitus sufferers
for years and is running a series of open days to create aware-ness of the support, services and products that are available to help manage and control tinnitus. We often hear of people suffering
from tinnitus who have been told there is nothing they can do about it, but this is just not the case.” Tinnitus is not a disease or illness that can be cured but there are number of techniques as well as products available that can help with reducing its severity and intrusion on a sufferer’s day to day life.”

Dublin People Newspaper Group has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for over 200 lost and abandoned dogs.
Our Dog of the Week is Dani, a six-year-old female Terrier Cross-breed.
Dani has been at Dogs Trust for nearly a year now and will require lots of TLC (Time Love and Commitment) from her new owners.
She can be wary of new people but once she gets to know you and lets her massive personality shine through, she will make you laugh out loud with her antics.
Dani loves going out for her walks and is especially enjoying playing in the paddling pool in the hot weather. She also loves play-ing with her teddies and snuggling into her duvet when playtime is over.
If you think you can offer Dani a loving, adult only home to call her own, call Dogs Trust on 01-8791000 or pop into the centre.

what do I do if I’ve lost my dog?NO MATTER how careful you are as a dog owner, accidents hap-pen and dogs can escape from your home or run away while you are out walking. It can be quite upsetting and distressful so it’s important you know who to call and perhaps you can have the relevant phone numbers already in your phone – just in case!
Your Local Dog Pound• Dogs found straying are usu-ally picked up by the local Dog Warden and taken to a holding kennel in the Dog Pound. Dog Wardens are legally responsi-ble for stray dogs so this is the first place that you should call. Call pounds in surrounding are-as too, as dogs can travel quite far when they want to.
• The Dog Warden must legally hold on to a stray dog for five days before they can rehome him, pass him onto a rehom-ing organisation, or euthanize him.
Animal Rescues & Rehoming Centres• Contact all the rehoming cen-tres in your area, such as Dogs Trust, DSPCA, ISPCA or Blue Cross.• Contact boarding kennels or small local rescue groups – search for ‘Animal Welfare’ on-line for contact details.
Veterinary Practices• Call and email all the veterinary practices in your area. Your dog may have been involved in an ac-cident and may have been taken to the vet for treatment.• Leave your details and a pho-
tograph of your dog with the vet and they will contact you, should a dog of his description come into the surgery for treatment.• Also inform your microchip da-tabase that your dog is lost as they should notify you if some-one tries to change the details.
Notice Boards & Social Media
• Occasionally a member of the public will take in a stray pet and look after him until the owner is found, but if they do they must contact the Dog Warden.• It is worth checking the local vet surgeries, supermarket no-tice boards, shops, libraries, lo-cal newspapers and other public notice boards to see if anyone is searching for the owner of a dog that fits your pet’s description.• Ask if you can put notices up in
these places – preferably a col-our poster with an up-to-date photograph of your dog
• Social media can be a very use-ful tool for lost and found dogs. Dogs Trust Ireland has a lost and found Facebook page: Dogs Trust Ireland – Lost and Found.
Local Areas & Buildings• Visit places where you usually walk your dog; he may have just decided to walk himself!• Look around your local area and if you have moved house recently, ask around at your last address. It is surprising how far dogs have been known to travel.• If there are any building sites or workmen in your area, ask around in case your dog has become trapped somewhere on site.
A tough break for Timmy the tortoiseA PET tortoise is being treated by a specialist in Bray, Co Wicklow, after being discovered in a bin at Greyhound Household’s recy-cling depot in Clondalkin.
The tortoise, named by Greyhound staff as Timmy, was found as a bin collection truck was emptying its contents at the depot for recycling. The waste was collected in the Dublin City Centre area. It’s unclear how Timmy got into the bin in the first place.
Timmy who had damage to his shell, was immediately dispatched to the animal agency, DSPCA. They, in turn, sent Timmy to the hard shell specialist in Bray for treatment.
A spokesperson for the DSPCA said it was the first time such an in-cident had occurred with a tortoise. Last year, Greyhound staff found a kitten, which had been among rubbish compacted at the company’s recycling plant. The kitten survived and was adopted by a member of Greyhound staff.

Cabra rapper joins Dublin 2020 bidJack Gleeson
CABRA rapper Lethal Dialect might be better known as one of Ireland’s better contempo-rary voices but he’s now lent his finely tuned vocal chords to an old Dublin song dating back to the ‘40s.
His latest tune is a rendition of The Dublin Saunter (Dublin Can Be Heaven) and it’s being released as part of the campaign to have the city designated a European Capi-tal of Culture for 2020.
The song and accompanying video can be seen and heard on Dublin2020 Bid’s YouTube chan-nel. Composed by Leo Maguire it was originally recorded by Noel Purcell in the 1940s and later by Paddy Reilly and Maureen Potter.
Lethal Dialect, or Paulie All-wright to family and pals, says he’s happy to help with the 2020 bid.
“Getting involved in the Dub-lin2020 bid is something I am
very proud to do,” he said.“To me it is a look to the future,
to what Dublin could be in 2020. I want to show my support and also show Dubliners that now is the time to start talking about and celebrating the amazing cul-ture that we all share – to quote the original song, ‘Dublin could be heaven’ in 2020 but to get there, people need to get talking about the bid, about what makes Dublin tick.
“I hope this song and video helps to keep the conversation going.”
The video for the song was shot on various locations around Dublin, including Downeys Pub in Cabra.
Lethal Dialect’s album LD50 Part 2 was critically acclaimed, receiving album of the year in the Irish Sun. His lastest album ‘1988’ was listed as RTE 2FM Dan He-gartys Number 1 album of 2014.
He’s opened shows for Maver-ick Sabre, La Galaxie and recently toured with Damien Dempsey. Cabra rapper Lethal Dialect. Photo by Tara Morgan Photography▪
This year he was invited by Lord Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to perform in front of 20,000 people in Trafalgar Square for the St Patrick’s Day Festival.
The Northsider has also a made a big impression on the Irish sum-mer festival circuit, this year playing at Life, Sea Sessions and The Vodafone Comedy festival.
The Dublin2020 campaign team are hoping to build aware-ness of the bid amongst Dubliners and are making efforts to spread the word across communities by asking Dubliners to get talking – both to the Dublin2020 team and to each other.
The campaign will culminate
in October, when European Capi-tal of Culture judges will arrive in Dublin to evaluate the city’s cul-tureal credentials.
Before then, the Dublin2020 team want to hear all age groups and all walks of life join in the conversation – to discuss their Dublin, their issues and shape the future of the city.
“This is a chance for the peo-ple of Dublin to talk about what it means to be a Dubliner and how, together, Dubliners can shape the city’s future,” a spokesperson for Dublin2020 said.
“The reason Dublin is bidding for the European Capital of Cul-ture 2020 is to build a new story for Dublin based on shared ideas, inclusion and confidence.
“Dublin can be a leading city in Europe, and take advantage of its talented young population, to ini-tiate major progress in communi-ties and neighbourhoods during this bid and beyond. Join in. If you are part of the city you are part of the bid.”
I hope this song and video helps
to keep the conversation going.

Nostalgic book from Cabra localCABRA local Martin Coffey is hoping to have his latest book published by the end of the month.
Martin previously penned A Time of Innocence, A Time to Re-member and Tell Me A Story – Ca-bra Remembered.
And now he’s put together an-other blast of Dublin nostalgia with his latest publication, ‘Old Dublin Photos‘.
Martin says the young boy on the front cover is his uncle, who began taking photographs when he was a young boy.
“This is his photo collection combined with stories by various people about Dublin,” he says. “He lived in the Monto part of Dublin and many of his photos were taken there at a time when Dublin corporation began demol-ishing the area.”
The book covers a period of Dublin from the early 1930s to the 1980s and features 270 pages with over 300 photographs.
“A lot of families who settled in Cabra West came from the north inner city area of Dublin and this may have an appeal to them,” says Martin.

Local postmaster to run in electionJack Gleeson
CABRA Postmaster, Andrew Kelly, has been chosen as one of eight community and post of-fice election candidates who’ll be running in the next general election.
Kelly is a well known community activist in Dublin 7 and is running in the Dublin Central constituency, which is set to be one of the most hotly contested in the country.
The Community and Post Of-fice Candidates group is not a new political party. It’s a movement of Independent candidates, all practicing postmasters or post-mistresses, who are sharing a common platform. They are not aligned with any other political group.
Many rural post offices are under threat of closure but Kelly says Dubliners are also concerned about the future of the communi-ties they live in.
“Protecting the Post Office net-
work is not just about supporting rural Ireland, it is about all citizens – rural and urban – having access to essential State and commercial services in the area where they live,” he explained.
“The future of post offices is a political choice. It is Government, not postmasters, who decide which services post offices pro-vide and which services people can access in their communities.
“Current Government policy is forcing post office customers to the commercial banks and will
lead to major network closures. We know that when a post office closes, it is followed by further local business closures and the heart is torn out of the commu-nity.”
Kelly says that while the main focus of his candidacy is on post offices, he feels he can bring something new to the area if he gets a seat.
“If elected, I will work for stronger policy, and more invest-ment, in each of the areas that make communities vibrant – par-ticularly local business and jobs,” he added.
Andrew Kelly has been a scout leader with Phibsboro Scouts for 22 years and is currently a rugby coach in Glasnevin CBS and Cool-mine Rugby Club. He is a past Chairperson of Christ The King girls’ school and campaigned for the refurbishment of Cabra Health Centre.
He is a graduate of Dublin City University and holds a Masters de-gree from UCD.
Kelly will find it tough going in Dublin Central, a constituency that’s seen plenty of drama when it comes to elections. It’s now shaping up to be a real dog-fight with only three seats up for grabs following boundary changes that’ll see eight less TDs in Lein-ster House for the 32nd Dail.
Sitting TDs, Paschal Do-nohoe (FG), Joe Costello (Lab), Maureen O’Sullivan (Ind) and Mary Lou McDonald (SF) will all fancy their chances while Cieran Perry (Ind) and former Lord May-or Christy Burke (Ind) have both thrown their hat in the ring and have strong local support.
Fianna Fail haven’t yet selected a runner and local councillor Mary Fitzpatrick, who long played sec-ond-fiddle to Bertie Ahern when he was a constituency shoe-in, may face competition from the party’s new kid on the block, Cllr David Costello.
Former independent Councillor, Éilis Ryan, will be running for the Workers Party.

“We recognise that for many, when it comes to decorating, bold colours can be scary, but it’s key to remember that colour can be used in a variety of ways,” Leigh Jones says.
“For the less adventurous, opting for pops of colour by introducing one or two new pieces, whether that’s a new sofa, rug, or lamp shade, can be great solution and help create a
vibrant fresh feel.“For the more daring colour-
seekers among us, bold colour statement sofas or chairs paired with complimentary accessories and vibrant patterns set against a neutral background can deliver real wow results.”

That’s according to findings from a recent colour match experiment that reveals when it comes to col-our schemes for the main home hangout, blue is the colour.
The Colour Match Experiment re-search, carried out on behalf of sofa specialists, DFS, explored our psy-chological relationship with colour to discover how it impacts on mood and emotion.
And while we’re fairly fond of teal themed décor and grey combos, most of us really like a blast of blue in the living room.
“For many of us, it’s really im-portant to create a living space that looks great from a style perspective and allows us to relax in comfort, but rarely do we think about how
our decorating choices might also impact our mood,” says DFS design-er, Helen Leigh Jones.
For the research DFS commis-sioned marketing experts from Mindlab who use neuroscience to determine why consumers intrinsi-cally prefer certain colours.
Researcher Dr David Lewis said the Colour Match Experiment results show a very strong correlation be-tween certain shades and specific emotions.
“What that means from a psycho-logical perspective is that people should think carefully about their colour selections when decorating, particularly in the living room where the majority of us spend most of our time at home,” he explained.
So while picking colour schemes might be a personal choice, it’s worth putting a bit of thought into the mood you want to create. It’s certainly something DFS do anytime
MAYBE it’s all that unpredict-able weather but when it comes to living rooms, we’re all feeling somewhat blue this summer.

House & Homemood. All three shades were found to be associated with positive emo-tions; blue is energising while grey makes people feel comfortable and on-trend teal is perceived as relax-ing.
COLOUR SCHEME NO-NOS The findings demonstrated the
importance of getting the colour scheme right when making deco-rating choices. Two colours were highlighted as shades to shun due to their association with negative emotions.
Red was found to make us feel agitated while orange was strongly associated with feelings of lethargy and tiredness.
DE-STRESS WITH NATURE From worrying about work to
fretting over finances, 21st century living can often prove incredibly stressful. In a world full of worry, choosing the most calming shade is a must for many, but fortunately help is at hand.
Green was found to make peo-ple feel most serene and with bo-tanicals and ‘bringing the outside in’ both key interiors looks this season, the natural approach could help keep your home on-trend and your life in balance.
PERFECT FOR PEACEEasy-going types, who tend to
be naturally calm, showed a prefer-ence for white living rooms. Highly strung personality types, on the other hand, were found to prefer the colour green for their living rooms and associate this colour strongly
with feeling calm and relaxed, sug-gesting that they are looking to surround themselves with colours that will help offset any feelings of stress.
AVOID EXTRAVERT DESIGNERS Those looking to make over their
home in order to enhance their mood should beware of picking a designer who is ultra outgoing, as energetic extraverts have a tenden-cy to prefer oranges and reds for their living rooms, colours typically associated with negative feelings of tiredness and agitation. Introverts, on the other hand, showed a pref-erence for energising blue and on-trend teal.

GradHow is developing an on-line platform to help college stu-dents reduce the uncertainty they encounter when they graduate by helping them understand the em-ployment opportunities relevant to them and by challenging the way employers recruit.
By improving connections be-tween employers and universi-ties, GradHow aims to improve the whole graduate employment proc-ess.
The founders of GradHow are Ben Chadwick and Alan John Browne, who have both recently completed third year commerce at UCD, and Stephen Duffy who has recently completed first year com-merce (international) at UCD.
UCD Startup Stars has been de-veloped by NovaUCD and the UCD Innovation Academy to provide a framework, and support pro-gramme for UCD undergraduate
students who want to work togeth-er to build start-up companies.
The programme began earlier this year with cross-disciplinary workshops delivered over a three-
month period as part of the UCD Innovation Academy’s Creative Thinking and Entrepreneurial En-deavour modules.
During these modules students from across the university learned creative thinking, teamwork, de-sign thinking and lean business skills.
Following pitches at the end of the modules six early stage student ventures, with 16 team members, were selected to participate in an intensive mentoring programme, which took place over four weeks at NovaUCD.
The aim of the four-week pro-gramme was to assist participants in refining their start-up ideas. It consisted of a series of structured workshops including taught con-tent from industry experts, inter-active workshops, regular pitching sessions and mentoring.
In addition, each team also re-
ceived a cash stipend and office space at NovaUCD for the duration of the programme.
Following final pitches GradHow was selected as the overall winner as it was judged to have the most commercial potential, and the founders received a cash prize of €3,000 sponsored by Xilinx.
Each of the five runners-up also received a cash prize of €500, also sponsored by Xilinx.
Brendan Cremen, UCD Director of Enterprise and Commercialisa-tion, congratulated the founders of GradHow.
“During the four-week pro-gramme we leveraged our start-up expertise and experience at NovaUCD to support this group of young entrepreneurial students to develop and refine their start-up ideas,” he added.
“We now look forward to seeing these early-stage ventures move
to the next stage of development and launch into the marketplace. We were delighted to work with the UCD Innovation Academy on the delivery of this new start-up sup-port programme for UCD under-graduates.”
Professor Suzi Jarvis, Founding Director of UCD Innovation Acad-emy said UCD students in every faculty have “big ideas and entre-preneurial zeal”.
“When we offered our students an opportunity to participate in UCD Startup Stars, we were very impressed by the standard of their ideas,” she explained.
“UCD Startup Stars was devised to combine the Innovation Acad-emy’s skills in creative problem solving with NovaUCD’s vast experi-ence in commercialisation and we have brought about a programme that offers UCD students a perfect launching pad and testing ground.”

A great performance from super UCD start-up studentsAN EARLY-STAGE University College Dublin (UCD) student venture has won the inaugural UCD Startup Stars programme.
Róisín Keyes, a third year Product Design student from Dublin Institute of Technology, has won highly commended in a national design competition for students. She invented plastic coloured extension keys for the flute, so younger children can reach the keys with their fingers more easily, and read music by looking at the coloured notes on music sheets.

show me the money!Cormac Spencer
For some reason or other peo-ple find talking about money one of the most difficult things to do in a job interview.
It seems to make everyone uncomfortable, even though for most people money is one of the main motivating factors for find-ing work.
This discomfort can also ap-ply when it comes to asking for a raise.
Over the last few years the prospect of higher remuneration has been a distant one for vast swathes of the workforce.
From agriculture to banking to construction, wages have stag-nated in the face of slack demand and a low inflation environment.
Recent reports from the Cen-tral Statistics Office (CSO) have seen average earnings rise and fall quarter on quarter and while the figures are positive for an-nual increases in wages, they are nothing to write home about.
The report shows that over the last year, wages have only risen by about €3.50 per week – av-erage weekly earnings were at €696.03.
These figures only give a broad view, however, and don’t take ac-count of wage growth within cer-tain sectors.
It also doesn’t take account of the fact that within sectors some companies will do better than others. From being at the coalface in recruitment we can see that in some areas wages are definitely on the rise.
While the figures as a whole may not be fantastic, it’s clear, that people are getting raises.
So if some people are seeing more in their pay packet, the question is: what is the best way to broach the subject with your employer so that you can feel bet-ter looking at the ATM screen?
Firstly, it’s important to know your worth to a company. In some jobs, that can be recorded in pounds and pence based on sales figures or trading stats.
However, most employees aren’t so easily able to quantify their contribution.
In these situations it’s vital that you put together a case for an increase in salary based on your work performance.
Use instances where you went above and beyond your du-ties, increased efficiency in the
company or won new clients to bolster your request for a raise. Don’t do this half-baked if you want to be taken seriously. You should have an argument that is difficult to resist.
Speak in specifics and not gen-eralities, to get your point across best.
Timing is always important. Some companies have annual re-views, which are an obvious op-portunity to make your case, but for those that don’t, employees should time their negotiations to optimise the chances of success.
For instance, you shouldn’t ask to meet the boss after quarterly figures show a drop in profit.
Rather book some time with the boss after you clinch that big deal which brings a major new client on board.
Most companies see staff re-tention as important and will seek to engage and strike a deal with anyone looking for a raise
(finances permitting). However, if all else fails, sometimes the only way to get the increase in salary is to leave the company.
If the structure of your com-pany is such that opportunities for advancement are limited, it might be time to look further afield.
At the moment there is ample opportunity to get that bump.
The predictions for this year are for modest rises in average earnings.
While it can be an awkward conversation to have, you don’t have to be Gerry Maguire to be “shown the money”.
Make your case in a calm and composed way and base it on merit and you might find your employer willing to engage.

Timing is always important when asking for a pay rise.▪
Drop in unemployment figures is welcomed locallyMINISTER of State for Equality, New Communities and Culture and Drugs Strategy, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, has welcomed the drop in Live Register figures for the Northside.
“In my own constituency of Dublin Bay North, there has been a 9.38 per cent fall in the Coolock Centre and an 11.88 per cent fall in the Kilbarrack Centre in the last 12 months,” he said.
“However, the conversation cannot just be about falling un-employment figures; it must also be about the quality of jobs offered.
“This is why my colleague, Minister Ged Nash, established a Low Pay Commission and is im-plementing collective bargain-ing to ensure that our economic recovery delivers better pay and better working conditions for all.”
Minister Ó Ríordáin added: “The Labour Party in Govern-ment has put job creation at the heart of our agenda, which is why
over the last number of years I held several local jobseekers’ information events where ex-hibitors from the Department of
Social Protection, National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) and the Northside Partnership were on hand to aid jobseekers.”
The prospect of finding a job is on the increase. ▪
