The event was organised by Minister of State with special responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, who heard calls for new measures to tackle the city’s drugs crisis.

“The approach we currently have belongs to a different time,” said Tony Duffin, Director of the Ana Liffey Drug Project.

“Drug use is no longer just heroin. People are using a wider variety of substances, and we need to be able to respond flexibly to that.

“As it stands, the main problem when working with people who use multiple substances chaotically is that there are no residential detox services that are immediately accessible – people are generally expected to have achieved a certain stability in the community.

“This is often not achievable for many people, and they are consequently excluded from the treatment they need.

“Crisis detox services exist in other jurisdictions. Establishing such services in Ireland would have an immediate positive benefit for the individuals, their family and the wider community.”

The current National Drugs Strategy runs to the end of 2016 and drugs workers are pushing for radical changes in the next plan that’s now being drawn up.

These include decriminalising drugs, a measure controversially introduced in Portugal that has been claimed led to a reduction in deaths from overdose.

“The Portuguese experience of decriminalising drugs is

also collecting it so locals with leftover paint can save themselves a trip to the recycling centre by dropping it down the project’s workshop at unit 4, Shangan Court, Shangan Road, Ballymun, Dublin 9.

“There’s just so much paint going to waste and this saves it from going to landfill or being sent overseas for recycling,” Warburton added.

Rediscover Paint is also providing local employment and training through a Community Employment scheme. This week locals can see the work for themselves during an open day at the workshop on Wednesday (August 5).

Staff from the project will also be at Ballymun Market on Ballymun Plaza this Thursday (August 6) and again on August 13 to showcase the paint and promotion days will be taking place at the Recycle Centres at Collins Avenue, North Strand and Ringsend.

rightly drawing strong attention internationally,” Duffin said.

“Minister Ó Ríordáin has begun a national discussion on decriminalisation and this is to be welcomed.

“However, we must remember that in Portugal they changed their approach not only to possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use, but to treatment and rehabilitation, aftercare, housing and employment for people who need help with their drug problem.

“This will be necessary in Ireland too if we are to improve the quality of life of all our citizens.”

Those attending last week’s ‘think tank’ also heard that a key problem in Dublin was public drug use which leads to unsafe disposal of drug paraphernalia.

Speaking at the Mansion House, Head of Policy and Advocacy at the Ana Liffey Drug Project, Marcus Keane, reiterated calls for Medically Supervised Injecting Centres (MSICs), something both the Lord Mayor and Minister Ó Ríordáin have indicated support for.

“Public injecting is a problem for the people engaged in the activity and also those who live and work in the area where public injecting takes place,” Keane said.

“It benefits no-one. Medically supervised injecting centres are an evidence based approach to addressing this issue pragmatically – they improve health outcomes for drug users and can significantly reduce the incidence of public drug use.

“They improve quality of life for all stakeholders. Critically, they are also cost effective.

“The evidence is clear – injecting centres save lives and money.”

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice is currently seeking public submissions on decriminalisation and other measures for the next National Drugs Strategy.

Horror movie starring local actor

Invoked is a ‘found footage’ horror in which five friends are terrorised by spirits while stay-ing at an island hostel. Their disap-pearance had been a mystery, until Gardai discovered footage taken by the pals.

The low-budget film was directed by Brazillians Humberto Rosa, Thairon Mendes who met Ciara through online advert website, Gumtree.

“I’d written a short film called City of Hate and I was asking if anybody would be interested in making it with me and they came forward,” Ciara said.

After working on City of Hate Mendes and Rosa asked Ciara, who’s from Corduff, to play one of the leads in Invoked, which was shot around Sligo and edited in Brazil. The film was selected for last year’s Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival, the biggest event of

its kind outside the South Ameri-can country.

Last week, many of the actors turned up at Filmbase in Temple Bar for a private screening of the movie that will be on general re-lease from August 10 in Ireland and the UK.

The film also stars Lynn Larkin, Patrick Murphy, Craig Grainger and Aaron Gibson.

A NEW horror movie staring local actor, Ciara Rose Burke, will be released on DVD next week.

Decisive action needed on healthcare system

Terence Flanagan

THE ongoing crisis in A&E departments around the country can be acutely felt on the northside of Dublin, in Beau-mont Hospital.

For too many years now, overcrowd-ing has been a problem brewing under the surface, only to bubble up during periods of intense pressure on our hospitals, especially during the winter months.

But this year, we have seen that this problem is no longer confined to the winter months.

In June, two elderly women, both over the age of 100, were left on hospi-tal trolleys overnight.

This represented the degrading and inhumane treatment that some of our

senior citizens have had to endure. It is unacceptable and must stop.

Notwithstanding the gravity of the situation, the Government has engaged in precious little action on the topic.

Their unacceptable lacklustre re-sponse has ensured that after four and a half years in office, the overcrowd-ing problems have not receded in any way. The Minister for Health set up the Emergency Department Task Force last December to explore long-term solu-tions to the crisis, but this venture was simply too little too late and has been nothing more than a talking shop.

I have consistently raised this issue in the Dáil and suggested a number of policies which would help provide immediate relief to the crisis, yet at the same time develop sustainable solutions to ensure the crisis comes to an end.

I call on the Minister for Health to seriously consider these suggestions and make a commitment to tackling the problem head on.

1. Funding needs to be ring-fenced to ensure adequate resources are avail-able to hospitals which are drastically understaffed, particularly in relation to doctors and nurses.

With this completed, more staff could be recruited and some of the pressures

currently faced by hospital staff would be alleviated.

Adequate funding would mean staff and patient safety would not be compromised in any way - a fundamen-tal tenet of any world class healthcare system.

2. The waiting time for the Fair Deal Scheme needs to be further reduced. Many elderly people are being kept in hospitals, the only reason being the bureaucratic and slow operation of the Fair Deal Scheme.

To help resolve this problem, we in RENUA Ireland would provide for the money collected as part of a dramati-cally reformed local property tax to be returned directly to local areas to develop and fund community nursing homes, thereby freeing up more much needed space in hospitals across the country.

3. The Primary Care Centres prom-ised need to be opened as soon as possible. In a positive development, the HSE has earmarked two Primary Care Centres for the Dublin Bay North constituency. One will be in Coolock/Darndale and the other in Edenmore. These centres need to be opened this year to relieve some of the pressure on Beaumont Hospital.

And once again, if RENUA Ireland’s

opinion >>

vision of a fundamentally reformed local property tax is implemented, local funding will be available to invest directly in vital community services.

In conclusion, I call on the Minis-ter for Health to take necessary and decisive action to commit to making our healthcare system world class, as at present our hospitals and dedicated

Pressure needs to be relieved on Beaumont Hospital. FILE PHOTO ▪

hospital staff are being ignored and starved of vital extra resources.

This is not a healthy position for our country to be in and it will only change when the Government commits fully to tackling the problem head on.

DCU researchers seek help for new dementia projectA RESEARCH team at DCU is looking for Northisders living at home with dementia, and their families, to talk about their experience of accessing information on services and supports.

DCU’s School of Nursing and Human Sciences, led by Dr Kate Irving and Dr Louise Hopper, is hoping to find out more about the supports currently available.

“Dementia is a condition that weighs heavily on the human psyche, triggering emotional responses of fear and dread,” said Dr Irving.

“The vast majority of people with dementia in Ireland live at home, which is where they and their families want them to be for as long as is practical.

“This should be possible with the right community-based services and supports.”

Research conducted at DCU has already revealed that the current range of services available is quite limited in scope. The team say it’s vital to better understand barriers to taking up care in order to develop more responsive services.

“Are services offered unsuitable, not wanted and why, are they too costly, too far away or not at the right time?” asked Dr Hopper.

“An opportunity exists to influence policy now, in light of the recent Irish Dementia Strategy and the current global emphasis on dementia.”

Those interested in speaking to the research team, should contact Dr Louise Hopper on 01-7008540 or email [email protected]

Maxol to build huge local service stationMAXOL has announced plans to build its largest service station in Ireland on a site in Dublin 15.

The petrol giants will develope the station on the N3 at Mulhud-dart and it will lead to 50 new jobs.

The futuristic service station will be on a 2.5 acre site on one of Ireland’s busiest motorways.

The development of the new flagship station represents a significant investment of over €4 million by Maxol and it’s the comapny’s biggest Irish project since its foundation in 1920.

The company says it will use leading technologies includ-ing the latest environmentally friendly and energy efficient equipment in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint.

The multi-level building will also see the introduction of a number of new franchises to wid-en Maxol’s choice of food offer-ings and there’ll also be a brand new off-licence.

The station will have a Maxol Mace convenience store, a brand new Moreish ‘Fresh Food’ café

and large open-plan relaxation areas with wi-fi and a children’s play zone.

The station will also boast an extremely spacious forecourt, a separate truck fuelling facility and extra car and coach parking.

“We are extremely proud to announce this significant ad-vancement for Maxol and look forward to opening the doors at this state-of-the-art Mulhuddart site in January 2016,” said Brian Donaldson, Group General Man-ager with Maxol,

“The creation of 50 new per-manent jobs including retail su-pervisors, shop sales assistants and deli sales positions will be of huge benefit to the area and overall economy.

“We have always strived to de-liver the very best in quality fuel for our customers, and continue to do so through our ‘Fuels You Can Trust’ initiative.

“But changing consumer de-mands mean it is no longer only

about the provision of quality fuel, it is about the full forecourt service and convenience offer-ing.

“Maxol Mulhuddart will be a full destination site and we are in discussions with a number of

potential partner franchises to further enhance this.”

Maxol are looking for an inde-pendent retailer to operate the new station under licence. The new station is being developed by Weslin Construction.

Maxol Group GM, Brian Donaldson, visits the Maxol site in Mulhuddart, the biggest development the company has introduced in Ireland to date.

Bohemian Foundation scores with communityJack Gleeson

FOOTBALL clubs are at the heart of local communities all over Ire-land but few could be making a real impact more than Bohemian FC.

For several years now a small group of club officials and volun-teers have been working quietly, tirelessly and without much pub-licity to improve the quality of life for Northsiders living around Dalymount Park and surrounding neighbourhoods.

They’re part of the Bohemian Foundation, started by club di-rector Tommy Hynes, and it’s set to be an integral part of the club’s

new future and partnership with Dublin City Council.

The council bought Dalymount Park for €3.8 million last month and has big plans for the historic stadium, which it wants opened up more for public use.

This ties in nicely with what the Foundation already does and its work has massive potential ben-efits for both Bohs and the local community.

Recent events organised by the Foundation include inviting the Irish Special Olympics soc-cer squad to Dalymount for a pre-match VIP tour, organising half-time games at the ground on match days for local soccer clubs and helping inmates at Mountjoy Prison give something back to the community.

Most of the work is spearhead-ed by Hynes, who’s as passionate about what the Foundation does as he is about Bohs.

“I’m doing it basically because I have a love for the community and the good work the Founda-tion does isn’t diminished just

because Bohs are getting a ben-efit out of it,” he says.

On July 17, Bohs played a thrill-ing televised game against Sligo Rovers, holding out for a 1-0 win with ten men. Before the kick-off Team Ireland’s Special Olympic 11-a-side and 5-a-side football squads who are now competing in the LA games were given a great send-off by Bohs fans.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh led the crowd in ap-plauding the Team Ireland play-ers and afterwards joined them for a meal provided by prisoners from Mountjoy.

The mayor heard the Foun-dation was helping the prison-ers prepare a meal for local senior citizens a few days lat-er and asked if she could tag along.

“The prisoners are working to-wards getting Gaisce awards and as part of that they wanted to make a meal for senior citizens,” explains Haynes. “We help them

do this every so often as part of our work with Mountjoy. The seniors are from areas like Phib-sboro, Cabra, Ballymun and Fin-glas and the mayor actually got to meet some old neighbours as she grew up around the Aughrim Street area.”

Obviously, being locked up is no laughing matter, but Hynes also recently helped organise comedy workshops in Mountjoy during which five prisoners de-veloped stand-up routines.

Led by John Colleary from Sav-age Eye, top comedians includ-ing PJ Gallagher and Willa White helped the prisoners polish their acts before they took to the stage to preform in front of invited guests.

“They were all great on the night, absolutely fantastic,” says Hynes.

“At the end of the night eve-rybody got up on stage and sang Oasis ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’. It was outrageous.”

Hynes and the Foundation have big plans for the coming weeks and months. First team Bohs players will visit local schools to help beat Ireland’s obesity cri-sis by spreading a healthy living message.

“The pupils will hear first hand from a Bohs player about what he eats, how he keeps fit and what exercise he does,” Hynes explains. “Bohs then invite the school to bring 30 or 40 pupils down for the next home game so they get to see the player in action. In that way, you’re also introducing Bohs to the youngsters and it helps get our name out there.”

The work done by Bohemian Foundation is a real win-win job. New fans mean more bums on seats at Dalymount.

“An extra 100 people at a match is €1,500,” Hynes calculates. “For ten games that’s €15,000 so we hope to get that spin-off as well and we’re getting good publicity around it now.”

Bay spear tradition continuesover 20 years.

Historical records show that the maritime tradition of Cast-ing the Spear dates back to 1488 when Thomas Mayler, who was then Lord Mayor of Dublin, rode out on horseback and cast a spear as far as he could into the sea. This was to mark the city’s

LORD Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh took to the wa-ters of Dublin Bay recently to take part in the re-enactment of a tradition dating back 527 years.

‘Casting of the Spear’ was the new Lord Mayor’s first official

duty as Honorary Admiral of Dublin Port following an investi-ture ceremony on the quayside, where she received the Admiral’s hat from Dublin Port Company chief executive Eamonn O’Reilly.

“It’s a wonderful tradition that brings to life the rich maritime history of our capital city,” she said.

“Long may it continue for gen-erations of Dubliners.”

Chief executive of Dublin Port Company Eamonn O’Reilly said: “The Casting of the Spear brings us back in time to medieval Dub-lin and reminds us of the port’s evolving links with the city.

“It’s over half a millennium since the then Lord Mayor, Tho-mas Mayler, set the city’s bounda-

ries by casting a spear into Dublin Bay.

Mr O’Reilly added: “It also encourages us to reflect on the wealth of maritime stories in Dublin Port’s history, which we are committed to preserving for the city and people’s understand-ing of Dublin as port city.”

As the financial crisis started to bite five years ago, NorthsidePeople reported on a bus stop outside DCU on Collins Avenue that cost €200,000 to install. The stop itself only cost around €30,000 but money was also spent on expensive utility works including re-laying of electricity cables, landscaping and on building a new wall.

Dublin City Council funded the cost and was reimbursed by the Department of Transport.

A Balbriggan teenager made an impassioned plea to the Department of Justice to allow him and his family stay in Ireland back in 2010.

Bola Adeniran (16) was described as a “star student” of Balbriggan Community College and he was desperately hoping that he wouldn’t have to return to Nigeria where he claimed he and his family were at risk of persecution.

The Adeniran family, who had lived in Ireland for six years, went into hiding when their application for asylum was rejected and a deportation order served. Bola’s father was deported at that time but the local community held a huge rally in support of the family.

Big budget bus stop

A €39 billion capital investment programme plan was unveiled by the Government at the new National Convention Centre in 2010.

Under the programme, due to run up to 2016, the Northside was set to become a “corridor for recovery” through major projects such as the completion of Ballymun regeneration, Metro North and the centralisation of DIT in Grangegorman.

Metro North was eventually shelved, Ballymun regeneration is complete but the area is without a promised shopping centre, and construction of DIT in Grangegorman is underway.

Remembering the Kilcoole Gun Running

THE Kilcoole Gun Running of August 1, 1914 was an event of major impor-tance in the lead up to the 1916 Ris-ing.

The Wicklow gun running, however, is often overshadowed by the more high profile Howth Gun Running of July 26, 1914.

In fact, both arms’ shipments were part of the same consignment that had been bought by Irish republicans in Germany and smuggled back to Ireland aboard two ships.

The ships were called the Asgard, which was skippered by Erskine Childers, that landed at Howth and the Kelpie, captained by Conor O’Brien, that was destined for Kilcoole, County Wick-low.

The full consignment of republican arms consisted of 1,500 German rifles, including the Mausers and single shot

rifles.A total of 900 rifles were loaded

aboard the Asgard while some 600 rifles were placed aboard the Kelpie.

While the Howth Gun Running had

been arranged as a public act of defi-ance, the organisation of the Kilcoole Gun Running was a far more secretive affair, with the landing taking place un-der the cover of darkness.

Originally, it had been planned for the Kilcoole guns to land on the night of July 25, 1914, but a number of events pre-vented this from taking place.

Chief among the reasons for post-ponement was a concern amongst the gun runners that Conor O’Brien, then a prominent member of the volunteers, might attract unwanted attention from the British authorities.

As the Asgard and the Kelpie shel-tered off the coast of Wales in late July, plans were made to transfer the cargo of the Kelpie to a less suspicious yacht, the Chotah.

The Chotah was owned by Sir Thomas Myles, President of the Royal College of Surgeons and the King of England’s hon-orary surgeon in Ireland.

With such a prestigious owner, the vessel seemed unlikely to raise suspi-cion and was perfect for the job.

The Chotah met the Kelpie off the Llyn peninsula in Wales and took hold of the precious cargo.

The Kelpie was now free to sail back to Dublin, providing an effective decoy for Childers and the Asgard.

The crew of the Chotah, however, found that their main sail was in need of repair and had to delay their voyage to Kilcoole.

Close to midnight on August 1, 1914, the Chotah was met just off the Kish lighthouse by the Nugget, a trawler based out of Howth.

The trawler then towed the Chotah to

Kilcoole, were it was met by a flotilla of volunteers in small rowing boats, wait-ing to ferry the rifles and ammunition ashore.

The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) presided over the arms’ landing.

Séan Fitzgibbon, a prominent local volunteer, was responsible for the un-loading operation, while Liam Mellows, then a rising Irish Republican Brother-hood star, was responsible for ensuring the rifles were distributed safely to re-publican safe houses.

Once safely ashore, many of the ri-fles were loaded aboard a charabanc, an early open top bus, and set off for Dublin.

At 5am, disaster struck in Little Bray, when the back axle broke off the chara-banc and it seemed as if the republicans and the rifles were stranded.

Luckily, the bus driver was a former resident of Bray, and by calling at a neighbour’s house was able to arrange a safe house for the rifles.

The volunteers then raced into the city, where a fleet of taxis was organised to collect the weapons.

The rifles were taken for safe keep-ing at Padraig Pearse’s famous St Enda’s School in Rathfarnaham and at Joseph Plunkett’s farm in Kimmage.

The Kilcoole Gun Running was a major success for Irish republicans.

Many of the rifles and personalities involved would later play a key part in the 1916 Rising.

of the

Dogs Trust is based in Finglas, just off exit 5 on the M50. Map and directions can be found on their website at www.dogstrust.ie. You can also pop up for a visit. Dogs Trust is open six days a week from 12-4pm. The centre is closed all day Tuesday. You can also find Dogs Trust on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dogstrustireland or Twitter @DogsTrust_IE.

Dublin People Newspaper Group has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for over 200 lost and abandoned dogs.

Our Dog of the Week this week is Maggie, a six-year-old Labra-dor cross. Maggie needs help to build her confidence up as she’s suffered a few knock backs in her time.

Once you get to know her, she’ll lavish you with affection and love. Maggie finds a lot about the world very frightening and needs a home in a quiet location with a loving family to slowly show her that she doesn’t need to be frightened anymore.

Maggie can live with older teenagers but would need to be the only dog in the home. Being an anxious girl, it’s important that her new family have infrequent visitors and the time to commit to helping her grow in confidence day by day.

If you think you could offer Maggie a loving home call Dogs Trust on 01-8791000 or pop into the centre.

Coping with the loss of your canine companionCorina Fitzsimons

DOGS give us so much and ask for so little in return.

They provide unconditional love, companionship, keep us en-tertained with their shenanigans and accept us for who we are, without judgement.

Unfortunately their life span is relatively short compared to ours.

Psychologists recognise that the feelings experienced by own-ers after the death of their dog are comparable to those felt af-ter losing close human friends or relatives.

Unfortunately not everyone understands the intense grief that can follow the passing of a dog and there is nothing worse than hearing a friend or rela-

tive (no matter how well mean-ing) telling you to pull yourself together because it was “just a dog”. Give yourself permission to grieve and be patient with your-

self. It is okay to be upset about the death of your dog. Take as long as you need and cry as much as you like.

Surround yourself with people

who understand your loss and who you can talk to about your dog. Talking with others will help you to express your feelings and come to terms with your loss.

Look after yourself physically and make an effort to get enough exercise, sleep and eat properly. Treat and pamper yourself.

Consider making a scrapbook with your favourite photographs and memories so you will always have it to look back on.

This can also be a way of re-minding yourself about all of the good times and some of the mis-chief he or she inevitably got up to, which can help ease some of the pain.

At Dogs Trust we know that it’s never a case of “it’s just a dog”, we know he or she was your best friend. Don’t be ashamed or too proud to get help.

DOGS TruST Canine COlumn

Contact a pet bereavement counsellor if you are having diffi-culty coping with your loss.

Try to plan ahead as much as possible, as it can be too trau-matic to make informed decisions when you are in the initial shock stages after the death. If you have warning that your dog’s death may be imminent, then discuss the options available with your vet beforehand.

What to do with your dog’s re-mains is a very personal decision. Some people may want to keep their dog close to them by bury-ing the body in their own garden, or by arranging for an individ-ual cremation and keeping the ashes.

Many people worry about what would hap-pen if they were to die

before their dog. Thankfully, Dogs Trust is on hand to ease this worry.

The Canine Care Card scheme is a fantastic free service that gives you peace of mind, know-ing that Dogs Trust will care for your dogs if you pass away be-fore they do. You can call them on 0 1- 8 7 9 1 0 0 4

MOST of us feel stressed or anxious at different times in our lives - looking for work, an exam, moving house, giving a presentation/speech, social sit-uations, relationships etc.

Major increase in texts to Console helplineA NATIONAL suicide prevention charity has recorded a 49 per cent increase in texts to its helpline in the first six months of the year.

Young men, in particular, ac-cessed crisis help through their mobile devices for the first time.

Sixty-two per cent of texts to Console’s 51444 line are now coming from males, a figure which is being hailed as a break-through in suicide prevention.

A total of 3,914 people texted the service between January and June 2015, compared to 2,617 for the same period in 2014.

Console founder and chief ex-ecutive Paul Kelly said men are four times more likely to take their own lives, but up to this point, no-one has been able to reach them in numbers.

“For example, 61 per cent of the steadily increasing 3,400 monthly calls to our free 1800 247 247 helpline come from fe-males, almost a direct reversal of the text statistics,” said Mr Kelly.

“Most of the 49 per cent in-crease in text use comes from young men who are using their mobiles as a way of opening initial communication with Con-sole’s services.

“We have experienced a large rise in young men texting HELP

to 51444 who may be in suicidal crisis, have attempted suicide or are engaging in deliberate acts of self harm.

“Some texters may be about to take their own lives or at the stage of having it planned down to the fine details with a firm in-tent on following through with it.”

Mr Kelly said when people are experiencing this level of crisis they sometimes find it easier to type than to talk.

“Our highly-trained and pro-fessional counsellors engage with them, and establish a rap-port that can be transferred to verbal communication in many cases,” he said.

Mental health expert Enda Murphy, who co-authored ‘Flag-ging The Screenager’ with Con-sole patron Dr Harry Barry, has hailed the latest figures as a breakthrough in suicide preven-tion.

“By introducing their unique text service, Console is meeting young men where they are and not where we insist they should be,” said Mr Murphy.

“Console are communicating to young men in their way and not insisting that they learn and communicate in our way. I be-lieve that they have found the road to the future.”

Meanwhile, Console’s statis-tics also show an increase in the number of young people calling the helpline because they are concerned about the welfare of a friend who may be in suicidal crisis. Mr Kelly said: “Third party calls about both teenagers and adults are becoming more of a feature of our work and mark a change in attitude toward suicide in Ireland, with people realising that there is help and hope avail-able for those who may be in cri-sis. “We have recorded a notable increase in the numbers of calls from those bereaved through suicide, again especially amongst teens.

“For the first time, we are see-ing the phenomenon of a number of unrelated people phoning about the one suicide.

Mr Kelly added: “We feel that this is down to more awareness of Console’s services, thanks to traditional and social media, and an increase in awareness of the effects of suicide bereavement on individuals.”

Runners and walkers are being asked to play their part in the fight against suicide by registering for the Laurels Charity Crew 10k Fun Run/Walk, in aid of Console, at Corkagh Park, on Saturday, September 19 at 2pm. Pictured at the launch were Karen Sheppard, South Dublin Mayor Sarah Holland, Jennie O’Farrell, Jeff Kernan Ciaran Tighe, Console and Cllr Kenny Egan. PHOTO: SUZANNE COLLINS.

MotoringTrailblazing Mercedes-Benz Coupé arrives in IrelandOVER the coming weeks, be-tween now and September, when deliveries will begin to arrive in greater numbers, ea-gle-eyed motorists can spot the first arrivals of the innovative, all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé driving on Irish roads.

Said by Mercedes-Benz to be the trailblazer for what they be-lieve will become another new model segment within the inter-national motor market, the GLE Coupé is a totally new concept that further expands what is already a rapidly growing Mer-cedes-Benz model range.

It enters the market here equipped with what Ciaran Al-len, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars says is ‘a very high level’ of standard and optional equipment. Standard is ILS Intelligent Light System, Ac-tive Parking Assist, leather trim and upholstery, satellite naviga-tion, metallic paint, heated front seats and mirror pack, to name but some.

Special emphasis is placed on its ‘Dynamic Select’ handling control technology whose work-ings are visualized on a central media dashboard display. Oth-ers include ADS variable damp-ing, ESP, Agility Control, Airmatic Suspension, Collision Prevention Assist and ECO Stop/Start.

The new GLE Coupé has a dis-tinctly sporty appeal helped by its very obvious all-road, off-road characteristics. With prices start-ing at €86,455 (ex works) for the 350d, the sleek, low-slung, four-door it is a car for aficionados -

those who relish exclusivity with-in a design that is both innovative and sure to turn heads.

Likely to prove most popular here – and the one certain to oc-cupy front-row space in dealer showrooms - is the three-litre,V6 turbo-powered GLE350d diesel. Stats include a 258bhp output, a massive 620Nm of torque, top speed of 226kph, 0-100kph ac-celeration of seven seconds and a claimed 37mpg or 7.6-litres/100kms in metric language.

A nine-speed G-tronic au-tomatic gearbox and 4-Matic permanent all-wheel drive are standard elements within its Sport Plus drive programme. Pet-rol alternative is an AMG-Sport model GLE 450 AMG with 4MATIC transmission.

Claimed by Mercedes-Benz to have the coupé world record for luggage capacity, it has 1,650 li-tres of carrying space and a tow-ing capacity of 3,500kg.

The GLE Coupé is a totally new concept that further expands what is already a rapidly growing Mercedes-Benz model range.

Grow it yourself: tips for the garden

teeth, but it’s appears the smile is genuine. Seriously, what’s wrong with that woman?

The impact of all this cold, wet weather has been consider-able. The new garden furniture I bought for the deck back in May seems to mock me, the cushions remain stacked almost unused under the stairs. Last weekend I actually lit the bloody stove. In July.

In the veg patch, pretty much everything is on a go-slow and it feels like the season hasn’t really begun, yet we’ve only four weeks of summer left.

We are only getting a slow trickle of ripened tomatoes, and as a result are still having to buy tomatoes for salads (imagine that?). Last year we were dealing with gluts of tomatoes from June

on. This year’s most abundant crops are slugs and weeds.

But we’re GIYers – so we re-main optimistic. I met someone yesterday who said that Donegal postman guy who predicts the weather (and who, bizarrely, we seem to give some credence to) has said we’re going to have a great August.

I don’t care that there’s not a jot of science behind it – like a one-armed man hanging on to a cliff, this is something I can cling to. So it’s official - we’re going to have an Indian summer for Au-gust and September, which will get us back on track.

We’ll be enjoying our salad crops right up to November and the cushions will finally make their debut on the deck. You heard it here first.

So let’s be honest – it’s been an absolutely miserable sum-mer thus far. Unremitting runs of Atlantic Westerlies have been rolling over like a relentless wave of dive-bombers dumping their misery on us - storms, rain, cold, more rain, more cold and then some rain.

This morning on the way to work it was 13 degrees. Let’s be clear, 13 degrees is just NOT a temperature that has any place in a summer day.

It’s an early spring day tem-perature or perhaps even a mild

winter day temperature.Watching the forecast on RTE

is becoming a nightly exercise in unrequited expectations. Each night I tune in in the hope that there might be some portends of good news on the horizon. Some vague hope of a change coming that I can hang my hat on.

But no, the dreaded words come again and again from a smiling Evelyn Cusack: “it’s go-ing to remain changeable in the long term”. I study her closely to see if her smile is through gritted

By Michael Kelly of Grow it Yourself (GIY) Ireland

I have avoided talking about the weather in this column so far on the basis that I really just don’t want to be that guy – but it’s the elephant in the room and with summer now slipping away, it’s time for a right old rant.

To-doGreen manures (mustard,

buckwheat, radish, rye, alfalfa, clover and vetches) are plants which are grown specifically to improve soil fertility and useful at times when beds are empty (as is often the case in August).

Grow directly in the bed and then cut down and dig in to the soil. Give pumpkins plenty of water and apply a high-potash liquid feed. Nip out the growing points to encourage the fruits to swell.

Net brassicas to keep but-terflies and the cabbage moth away (and check undersides of leaves regularly for caterpillars). Keep watering in the polytunnel - mulch around plants to retain moisture.

sowContinue succession sowing.

Sow spring cabbage, red cab-bage, winter spinach, salad on-ions (in polytunnel for spring crop), autumn salad mix, endive, parsley, onion seed, Chinese veg-etables.

harvestPick Beetroot regularly as

they reach the size you require - if left to grow too large they will loose their tenderness. Con-tinue to harvest tomatoes, car-rots, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, broad beans, French and runner beans, salad leaves, radish, tur-nip, potato, onions, peppers and chilli-peppers, aubergine, globe artichoke, courgettes, cucum-ber, gooseberries, raspberries and currants.

Tip of the Week – sow Tur-nips

Turnips are very easy to grow and because they produce a crop so quickly, they are an ideal candidate for late summer sowing. Note that we are

talking about turnips here (with the white flesh) as opposed to swedes (yellow flesh) which take longer to mature (it’s too late now to sow swedes this year). The green leaves that grow on top of the turnip can also be eaten. Water well in dry spells to prevent cracking. Harvest when small and don’t leave them in the ground too late in the winter - they will be a target for mice and slugs. At home I grow the variety Milan Purple Top. At the GIY Market Garden, Dermot grows Market Express which local restaurants here in Waterford snap up! Buy seeds at www.giyinternational.org/shop/seeds.

TRINITY College Dublin’ welcomed secondary pupils from four girls’ schools, including three from Dublin (Our Lady’s Terenure, Santa Sabina, Sutton, Lucan Community College), for its seventh annual two-week eye-opener into the world of engineering.

The fourth and fifth year girls learned about the prospects and opportunities open to engineers at Trinity’s School of Engineering while enjoying demonstrations and talks and engaging in problem-solving exercises and design challenges.

A favourite this year was the portable speaker project, where each student designed and built a speaker to plug into their mobile phone.

The project covered design, basic theory, electronic circuit construction and soldering, before the students used 3D printers to finalise their custom casing designs.

Course Co-Ordinator and Assistant Professor in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Trinity, Kevin Kelly, said: “With a 5:1 ratio of males to females in Irish engineering, we must all work harder to create a more balanced demographic.

“As well as helping address the

supply shortage of graduate engineers, more female students and practitioners will result in increased diversity which leads to better decisions as well as more innovative designs and outcomes,”

Professor Kelly believes the course is going from strength to strength for three main reasons. Firstly, it is free of charge, ensuring access is not restricted by finance, secondly, meaningful and lasting partnerships continue to

develop with secondary schools, and thirdly, students are invited to partake on the basis of ability, rather than pre-existing motivation.

As a result, ‘don’t know’ and ‘maybe’ students are invited in

preference to those who already have strong inclinations towards studying engineering.

The programme is facilitated by staff members and graduate students and by a team of undergraduate summer interns. Some of this year’s interns had participated in the programme when they were in school, and as such were in a special position of having been on ‘both sides of the table.’

Katie Petherbridge, a second-year student in the Engineering with Management degree at Trinity, said: “I initially had my heart set on nursing and didn’t really have much of an interest in engineering. But when I participated in the summer programme I realised that there was so much more

Shortage of public relations graduatesTHE public relations industry is experiencing an acute shortage of qualified professionals to fill vacancies as job opportunities are increasing across the sector in Ireland.

The fall in the number of PR graduates, combined with the rising demand of qualified specialists in the industry, has created a war for new talent in Ireland.

“At last, after a few years of uncertainty, the economy looks set for recovery,” said Noel Murphy, of the Fitzwilliam Institute Group, the longest-running PR training provider in Ireland.

“That is good news for PR professionals, as recruitment picks up and job opportunities arise.

“But how easy is it to hire Public Relations qualified staff when you are a growing company? Not very easy.

“Even since this time last year, demand for qualified professionals has spiked and employers are becoming

very vocal about their concerns.“Fitzwilliam Institute Group is the

leading PR training provider in Ireland. We started off with a Postgraduate Diploma in PR course, 25 years ago, to provide qualified graduates for the Public Relations industry.

“Over the years, we trained a large percentage of the senior, key people in the sector and they are today’s employers.

“They come back to us looking for graduates because our PR courses, accredited by the PRII, are the best available to the industry.

“We have an unique admission process for these courses – by interview – and we ensure our graduates are always the best. Sadly, what we noticed lately is that the number of students graduating is insufficient to meet the rising industry demand.

“There are more PR jobs than practitioners and employers are very concerned about the drastic shortage of PR qualified professionals.”

Engineering is a creative sector▪

to engineering than I had thought.“I couldn’t wait to come back for

a second year, and by then I was pretty sure of what I wanted to do. I really enjoy what I’m doing now, even though it is pretty hard work at times, and being able to talk to the girls as someone who was recently in their shoes was really fun too.

“I loved designing activities for them to do, to show them what engineering can be like, and also talking about my own experiences in my course - such as showing them the resonator guitars that we designed and built for our second year project.”

Kirsty Monaghan, a third-year student in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme at Trinity, added: “This was my first time working on this programme and I was struck by how much I would have enjoyed this when I was their age.

“I also really enjoyed listening to the academic staff talk about what they do, and to some of the guests, such as Aoife Wilson from Engineers Without Borders, and Gill Pierse from Google.

“It showed the girls just how varied the options are with an engineering

career.“I really believe in what this short

programme is doing for the future of engineering and I hope to stay involved in it.”

Professor Kelly hopes the course will increase the visible options for female students, by raising awareness of what an engineering programme can offer.

There have been many ‘top-down’ approaches to encouraging girls in engineering, but the numbers are stubbornly low – and not just in Ireland. The key to change may lie in engaging bottom-up approaches, as it’s known that role models are important in

precipitating long-term change.Professor Kelly added: “With what

we’re doing here, we are reaching potential students directly, but more importantly we’re also disseminating a key message through what we know are the key information channels: parents, teachers and peers.

“Things like the posters and videos we make for each school – showing that their students engaged in the summer programme – and the conversations and experiences of the girls, their parents and teachers, can have a significantly larger and longer-lasting impact than other types of outreach.”

LIFELONG learning skills are needed by college students who want to improve their grades, adults who have returned to college seeking higher education, employees and professionals who want to progress in their careers, seniors who want to stave off or reverse the decline in their mental powers, and all those who want to develop and maintain a sharper mind.

You are born with the most amazing computer in your head but it doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Just like an understanding of how a lathe works may help carpenters build better furniture, an understanding of how the brain works may help you use it more effectively.

The brain needs

learning, oxygen, nutrition and love to survive and thrive. Provided you look after it during your life the brain will serve you well into ripe old age. The more you use your brain the smarter you will become.

Concentration is the discipline of being able to become totally absorbed in a topic. In any area of life you can’t achieve anything worthwhile without developing and exercising your powers of concentration.

A lack of concentration has resulted in students failing examinations, employees not getting the job they want, unnecessary mistakes being

made, companies going bankrupt and sports people losing tournaments and games,

with dire personal, professional and financial consequences.

Good reading skills are critical for success in all areas of our

personal, study and working lives. Reading feeds the brain with

ideas and information, nourishes the imagination,

expands our mental horizons, enhances creativity and builds our thinking skills.

Reading helps you acquire information outside the realms of your own experience. There are reading skills you can master which will improve your ability to read faster, smarter, and with greater facility, comprehension and retention.

Reading strategies give you choice as regards what you should read carefully, what you should skim and scan, and what you should skip and ignore. They can easily be adapted for different kinds of reading such as challenging non-fiction books, light novels, newspapers, magazines, letters and reports.

Learning maps are tree-like, radiant, nonlinear ways of organising information by showing graphically

the connection between central ideas and supporting information. In their structure they mimic the organisation of the brain with its connections of neurons and synapses. They are a way of capturing information, and provide a simplified pictorial overview of complex information, allowing learners to better understand relationships and find new connections.

Lifelong learning is continuous education and training from cradle to grave and involves formal and informal methods of learning. It aims to provide the best possible development and opportunity in personal, social, recreational, working and professional lifes. To become a lifelong learner you must be totally committed, passionate, motivated and purposeful about the pursuit of learning, and believe that learning is a continuous journey and not an end in itself. You must identify your learning needs, set your goals, monitor your progress, and modify your strategies as necessary.

Memory is the power to remember and recall events, and is a central part of our identity and life story. It is impossible to function successfully without a good memory. Memory skills can be used in the home, study, for everyday life tasks, personal development or at work. The effort and time involved in learning memory skills will be more than compensated by your improved memory, personal development and overall ability to

learn more effectively. There are simple strategies you

can adopt to overcome everyday memory problems including acronyms, acrostics and rhymes. Through this book you will discover how your memory works and about the techniques that will help you remember better and learn more.

Irish fighter pilot remembered in revised historyWHEN it was first released, ‘Men of the Battle of Britain’ became the standard work of reference on the aircrew who took part in the aerial fighting during the opening stages of the Second World War.

Now it has been painstakingly revised, updated and many new photographs have been included for the 75th anniversary of the battle.

Among the brave men recount-ed in this volume is Brendan Ea-monn Fergus Finucane.

Born in Dublin in 1920, Finu-cane was educated at the Chris-tian Brothers O’Connel School there.

He joined 65 Squadron in July 1940. Between August and Oc-tober 1941 Finucane claimed 16 Bf 109s destroyed, two probably destroyed, two shared and two damaged.

He was awarded a second bar to his DFC in September and the DSO in October that year. In 1942

he was appointed Wing Commander, but after return-ing from attacking ships at Ostend his plane crashed into the sea and he was never seen again.

His last words over the R/T be-fore hitting the wa-ter were “This is it chaps”.

Brendan Finucane is one of many men who are remembered in this meticulously researched book, which should be inval-uable to the historian, researcher, aviation enthusiast, or anyone with an interest in the men who fought against the Luftwaffe in the summer and au-tumn of 1940. How to outlast your trial period

to gossip about co-workers. Be polite to those who are spread-ing it, but take people as you find them.

This is an opportunity to progress in a new company, so don’t make enemies when you don’t need to.

During the early days of a new job, try to have an input in meet-ings and during work.

Come up with suggestions and insights that mark you out as

someone who is sharp, confident and who knows their stuff.

Be careful not to come across as a know-it-all, or to impose yourself too aggressively, and remember not to say things like: “this is not how we used to do things in my old job”.

You aren’t in Kansas now! Peo-ple are most interested in what works in the here and now and for the future.

Finally, don’t rest on your

laurels. It should be said, that probation periods are two-way streets (allowing the company to assess you, but also allowing you to see if the job is really what you want), but once you decide you want the job, don’t let your performance drop after you are confirmed as a permanent em-ployee.

Keep contributing and mark yourself out as one to be watched.

A new job is a fresh slate. Be confident. Make yourself invalu-able and you might find oppor-tunities present themselves not just for increases in salary, but also for progression.

It’s all downhill from here isn’t it? Not quite. While signing your new contract might be pleasing, your new job isn’t something guaranteed for life.

For a start, most jobs require a six-month probation period to as-sess whether your work perform-ance matches your performance in interview.

For an employee this time is important in making sure the probation is a mere formality, and that the job is secured for however long it’s wanted.

Starting a new job provides the opportunity to institute your-self as a valuable member of the team.

First impressions are impor-tant and you only get to make one. Good first impressions al-low you to establish yourself as someone recognised as smart, motivated, and possessing the potential to progress.

The chances are that you have never met most of the people you are working with, so you have a clean slate with which to make your mark.

For the first few weeks of a new job, co-workers will cut you some slack. They assume you don’t know how everything works, so use this time to ask questions.

Bring a pad and write down answers to make sure it sinks in. A good tip is to hold queries until the end of the day as they are often answered in the normal course of things.

This also stops you butting in with a question every five min-utes and coming across as though you aren’t grasping things.

Familiarise yourself with new systems and work practices, ask pertinent questions, and look for training early on, because where-as people are happy to help when you first join the company, if you are asking what your login to the computer is after two months their patience may begin to wear thin!

It’s important to introduce yourself around in a new organi-sation. Get to know who does what, and who makes the deci-sions. Knowing the key players allows you to do your job better.
