FiVe new sites are being con-sidered for the Finglas Pri-mary care centre that was dramatically scrapped last February, northside People has learned.

The HSE had been granted planning permission by Dublin City Council to build the health centre on a site bounded by Mellowes Road, Mellowes Av-enue and Kildonan Road but local residents successfully appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála.

The HSE warned this would “significantly delay” the pro-vision of a long-promised and badly needed Primary Care Centre in the Finglas South and Finglas West area.

However, it’s now been con-

firmed that the project may be back on track with five alterna-tive sites now officially under consideration on a ‘without prejudice’ basis.

The sites, named in an an-swer to a question posed at a recent council meeting by Cllr Noel Rock (FG), include one at Barry Road at the junction with Barry Avenue, which is close to the original planned location.

Other sites named include Cardiffsbridge Road, where it meets Mellowes Road across from the Church of the Annun-ciation, and the green space facing Wellmount Drive.

The final two locations are at St Helena’s, close to the lo-cal resource centre, and a long stretch of land on Finglas Road near the village.

Cllr Rock said that now the council had confirmed its intent to put the stalled Finglas Pri-mary Care Centre back on the agenda he would be ensuring it’s kept there.

“I welcome this release from Dublin City Council which out-lines five potential sites,” he added.

“Regardless of what happened before, it’s clear that Fine Gael wants to provide a primary care centre for Finglas and that the funding can be procured to get

this going, but what we need is a clear strategy in relation to a site and agreement around that.”

The HSE had originally agreed a €180,000 deal with Dublin City Council for the centre to be built on the land at Mellowes. How-ever, in June 2013 local council-lors rejected the plan by a vote of 3-2.

Councillors were then warned that rejecting the proposal would delay the project and could jeop-ardise funding earmarked for the centre.

The plan was put forward again the following month and

passed by a vote of 4-1. The re-versal angered local residents who had argued against locating it on the proposed site.

The residents mounted a cam-paign against the centre and were delighted when An Bord Pleanala made the surprise deci-sion to reject the plan.

Cllr Rock is calling on his fel-low councillors to pull together this time to keep the project on the agenda and push it forward.

“It’s important that we make sure that there are no repeats of the kind of ‘blame game’ we saw after the last proposal fell apart,” he said.

“I hope the HSE and DCC will work closely with the community on this and ensure there are no slip ups like last time.”

He added: “I certainly intend to keep the public well informed of this process every step of the way, as I have always worked to do.”

If it proceeds, the Primary Care Centre would house GP clinics and provide a range of medical services such as nurs-ing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and nutrition and dieti-cian services.

The garden was created in just one day by staff from Aer Lingus who worked in teams of 10 to transform the near derelict site into a cheerful, inclusive space for sick children and their families.

Before Hugh died, Ade and Marty, his two older brothers Fred (3) and Theo (5) and his godmother Monica Macken, spent time with him every day.

During that period they witnessed the heartache and strain experienced by other families in similar circumstances. And they wanted to do something for them in memory of Hugh.

“We live in Dublin so we were able to visit Hugh every day of his short 247 day life while still

being in a position to return home every night,” explained Ade.

“Unfortunately not all parents of sick children can do this. We have created this wonderful Garden at Hugh’s House to help people who find themselves in the same traumatic position as us and could benefit from a space nearby the hospital where they can escape from the hospital environment.

“It’s just around the corner from the hospital so parents and families can easily walk around to it, along with children who are well enough to leave the hospital.

“The therapeutic benefits of spending time outdoors is well known and it is our hope that this city centre garden retreat will provide some small

comfort for families who are going through the same tough experience that we did.”

Hugh’s House and Garden and Aer Lingus were brought together by Difference Days, a company that matches organisations with charitable causes.

The Breffni Construction Group and the East Wall Men’s Shed are amongst a number of other volunteers who have already donated their services to the project.

While the facility has been privately established, it does welcome donations to help in running costs. The donation of time by skilled electricians, plumbers and decorators is particularly welcome currently.

You can find out more on Facebook @ Hugh’s House.

Fresh calls to construct new children’s hospital in Dublin 15Jack Gleeson

THE chief executive of a na-tional children’s charity says Blanchardstown should to be reconsidered as the best loca-tion for the National Children’s Hospital.

Jonathan Irwin of the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation is call-ing on Minister for Health Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Joan Bur-ton to reopen the file and consid-ering the benefit locally in terms

of jobs, investment and spend.A site at St James’s has already

been chosen for the new hospital but Irwin says many families in-volved with the Jack & Jill Foun-dation believe the location is too small with little room for expan-sion.

“None of our board members has a problem with the design of the National Children’s Hospital,” he said.

“Where we have the problem is with the flawed location. It’s in-accessible, a parking nightmare,

a cramped inner city location with security problems and, most worryingly, the co-location of a maternity hospital in St James’s has disappeared from the agenda and there simply isn’t the room.”

Department of Health officials are currently considering relo-cating the Rotunda Hospital to Blanchardstown and Irwin feels this strengthens the case to site the National Children’s Hospital there as well.

“We don’t expect that this Government will build a mater-nity hospital at St James’s even if there was the space on the cam-pus to do so, which there is not,” he continued.

“Nobody wants to spend more wasted millions on the second wrong location, when Blanchard-stown is the obvious solution and would give us that all important link to the Rotunda.

“I am urging local residents in Blanchardstown to remind Minis-ters Burton and Varadkar of their obligation to build the best hospi-tal for all concerned, and with the solution right on their door step, what’s stopping them reopening the file on Blanchardstown?”

Event for older people to be held this week in the Central LibraryDUBLIN City Council is holding an Age Friendly Over 55’s Open Day in the Cen-tral Library, Ilac Centre, on Thursday, June 25, from 2pm to 8pm.

Twelve organisations will be represent-ed and a range of activities will take place such as tai chi, and an older person’s NCT. Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Christy Burke, will

be attending the event.“The initiative is part of the Older

Person’s Action Plan 2015-2019, which is committed to making Dublin city a great place to grow old in,” he said.

“The event will focus on the positive side of aging and provide older people with many opportunities to engage with their community.”

Other happenings on the day include a seated balance and mindfulness session and all activities are open to every level of ability.

The Open Day will also cover a number of aspects relating to aging and the ser-vices available. A special music event will wrap up the events of the day followed by tea, coffee and refreshments.

FRESH calls have been made for legalised safe injecting cen-tres in Dublin after the discov-ery of discarded syringes and drug paraphernalia in a North-side estate.

The syringes were found in Drumalee estate, off North Circu-lar Road by local residents who contacted local Dublin City coun-cillor Janice Boylan (SF).

Cllr Boylan says it’s not the first time she’s been notified about the issue.

“I was shocked to be sent a picture illustrating this prob-lem,” she said.

“Every second day I am con-tacted by residents reporting discarded drug paraphernalia in our neighbourhoods, in streets where our children play and try have a normal childhood.”

Cllr Boylan contacted council officials who responded quickly to remove the dangerous nee-dles.

“I cannot begin to stress the level of anger from residents that drug users would discard such harmful and life threaten-ing objects where children play,” she said.

“I have always supported the use of safe injection centres and they have proven themselves to work in places like Australia.

“These centres will help to sig-nificantly reduce the amount of drug paraphernalia discarded on our streets and neighbourhoods.

“They will also help by educat-ing drug users to discard their

needles safely.”Meanwhile, statistics obtained

by Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan (Ind) show almost two thirds of Irish addicts on metha-done programmes are from Dub-lin, Kildare and West Wicklow.

According to the figures pro-vided by the HSE, these areas equate to 64 per cent of the total number of 9,866.

In the Dublin North, North Central and North West areas there are 3,353 addicts on official methadone programmes.

The latest annual figures from the National Drug-Related Deaths Index indicate that there were 633 drug related deaths in 2012.

A total of 350 of these deaths were due to the toxic effects of drugs. Methadone was impli-cated in 86 poisonings in 2012 and the majority of the deaths (87 per cent) where methadone was implicated were polydrug poisonings.

Deputy Broughan said: “Hope-fully with the recent appoint-ment of a Minister of State with responsibility for drugs we will start to see a difference in our worsening drugs crisis.

“Projects such as Ana Liffey Drug Project and Merchants Quay Ireland have long been call-ing for action on the issue and we can see from these figures that our dependence on methadone as a means of treating addiction is growing.

“We need real alternatives, appropriate supports and timely access to detox rehabilitation centres.”

THE closure of Clerys was a sad day, not only for the affected employees, but for all the generations of Dublin-ers who passed through its doors.

When I was growing up back in the 1970s, no trip into town was complete without a visit to the iconic department store.

The ritual was nearly always the same: we’d get off the train at Connolly; buy some new shoes in the shop under the railway bridge on Talbot Street; a quick pit stop at Guiney’s; a flick through the record covers at Dolphin Discs…

The best, though, was always kept till last. It had all been building up to Clerys, home to the country’s most in-credible toy department; nothing short of a utopia for kids of my generation.

Most of the time it was just for a look. Back then, we got toys at Christmas or for our birthdays, not like some of today’s pampered children.

In 1977, I had money of my own after doing the lucrative First Holy Commun-ion circuit. The only place I wanted to spend it was in Clerys. The trip to town with my mother the following weekend couldn’t come quick enough as I had my eye on one of those Six Million Dollar Man action figures.

In those days, families didn’t dine out as much as they do now, but when they did, the rooftop restaurant in Clerys was a firm favourite. My father would bring us there every Christmas, followed by a visit to the ‘real’ Santa downstairs.

As with everything else, Clerys had the best Santa in Dublin and the seemingly endless queue would snake around the corner to North Earl Street. It was worth every single freezing minute.

Despite expressing their sympathy with the Clerys employees, our politi-cians shouldn’t be too surprised by the demise of the business. The city centre

has been decimated by the proliferation of massive shopping centres and retail parks on the outskirts of the city, all developed with the blessing of our local authorities. There has also been a sharp decline in the numbers of our country cousins making the annual December 8 shopping pilgrimage to the ‘Big Smoke’

for the same reason. Even small towns in the Midlands are self sufficient these days when it comes to retail centres.

In these busy times, many of us have migrated to the world of online shop-ping. We’ve also had our pockets picked by the Government through property tax, the Universal Social Charge and wa-

ter bills. This was the limited disposable income families once had to make the occasional trip to places like Clerys.

Until the so-called recovery starts to percolate down to people’s spending power, we can expect to see further high profile casualties on the city’s retail landscape.

Post office won’t be lost

Cllr Noel Rock (FG), who also spoke about Ballymun Post Office.

“This is good news, and puts an end to the fear-mongering being incorrectly whipped up by some local politicians,” he said.

“On the wider issue though, the Chair of the Post Office Business Development Group, Bobby Kerr has emphasised that our post office network must diversify in order to secure its future and to grow.

“Some of the ideas proposed include using post offices to pay motor tax, the local property tax, hospital charges and expanding the banking services already pro-vided.”

The Post Office Business De-velopment Group has opened the initial report for public consulta-tion until July 28 and Cllr Rock is encouraging all interested groups to get involved and have a say.

The report can be found on the Department of Communications website.

Local residents had expressed concern that the area would be left without a post office but own-er of SuperValu, Robert Murphy, has been awarded the contract to run the An Post services.

The new post office will be based in the rear of the SuperValu store and it’s understood it will have longer opening hours. The news was revealed by local coun-cillor, Noeleen Reilly (SF), who learned of the development at a recent Economic Development meeting for the Ballymun Civic Alliance.

“I am pleased to announce that Robert Murphy will be taking over as Postmaster in Supervalu,” she said.

“Well done Robert and I’m de-lighted to see this go to a local

businessperson.“The store will be adapted to

meet the needs of the customer. I think this is an important step in retaining and growing business in Ballymun.”

Cllr Reilly also expressed grati-tude for the popular outgoing postmaster.

“I want to thank Dermot for all his years given to Ballymun,” she said.

“He looked after everyone’s needs very well and is an absolute gent.”

News of the successful tender-ing process for Ballymun Post Office came shortly before last week’s publication of an initial re-port from the Post Office Business Development Group.

The report was welcomed by

Jack Gleeson

FEARS that the post office in Ballymun would be lost to the area following the retirement of postmaster Dermot Higgins have been allayed.

Choir sing for Ban Ki-MoonTHE choir of Scoil Bhríde Boys and Girls National Schools in Blan-chardstown played a very special role at a recent event honouring one of the world’s most important VIPs.

The young students sang for United Nation’s Secretary-Gen-eral Ban Ki-Moon, in Farmleigh where he was guest of honour at a dinner hosted by Tánaiste Joan Burton.

The pupils were invited to perform by the Tánaiste at the gala event and Ban Ki-Moon was entertained by the choir of both Scoil Bhríde Boys and Girls Schools.

Conducted by principals John Kearns and Deirdre Kirwan, the students welcomed the VIP in ten different languages from around the world, as well as Irish and English, and sang a number of songs, including ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Lean on Me’.

“It was great to have the choir of Scoil Bhride there for the event, and they sang beautifully,” said the Tánaiste.

“The Secretary-General was definitely very impressed with their performance.”

The Tánaiste formally wel-comed Mr Ban to Ireland, and noted that this year Ireland marks its 70th year of member-ship of the UN.

“Irish people are proud of the major role we play in the United Nations,” she said.

“Although small in size, the reach of our country is significant in terms of the contribution we make to supporting your crucial work.”

Local pupils are winners in safetyFOUR Northside youngsters have been announced as winners of a construction safety competition organised by the Health and Safety Authority and Drumcondra Education Centre.

The ‘Building Safety’ competi-tion was open to primary school children nationwide and at-tracted over 6,650 entries from around the country. And last week four local pupils from the Drumcondra catchment areas were presented with prizes and certificates for their entries.

The four local winners were:• Billy Gillispie, 4th Class, St

Patricks NS Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

• Scott Bennis, 1st Class North Dublin School Project, Ballymun Road, Dublin 9

• Eimear Walsh, Junior Infants, Scoil Ide, All Saints Drive, Ra-heny, Dublin 5

• Ada Liskauskas, 6th Class St Francis of Assisi Primary School, Belmayne, Dublin 13.

The competition was aimed at raising awareness among chil-dren and their families about the critical issue of safety in con-struction. Children were asked to create a piece of art, or, write a story or poem, with a construc-

tion safety theme. The winners had the opportu-

nity to participate in workshops around the country with artists and writers from Kids’ Own Pub-lishing Partnership. The result-ing book will be published by the Health and Safety Authority in the Autumn and sent to all schools and libraries nation-wide.

Catherine Shanahan, Director of Drumcondra Education Cen-tre said: “We are delighted to promote a competition like this which is concerned with safety and the livelihood of so many of our children’s families.

“We have had a great response to the competition and children are uniquely placed to influence social change in the home and by extension, the workplace.

“They are raising their own awareness of safety as well as bringing the safety message home to parents and extended family employed in the construc-tion industry.”

Labour’s Lyons ready for battleJack Gleeson

LABOUR TD, John Lyons, has been selected by his party to defend the Dublin North West seat he won in the last general election.

Deputy Lyons got the third highest number of first prefer-ences last time out and secured his place in Lenister House with the help of transfers from then party colleague, Roisin Shortall, who topped the poll and was elected on the first count.

However, this time around will be more difficult for the Labour representative with Deputy Shor-tall now expected to contest for one of the three seats either as an Independent or as part of a new national alliance with other non-party TDs.

Labour has also been strug-gling in polls with the smaller co-alition party blamed for some of the harsher measures introduced by the current Government to tackle the financial crisis.

Sinn Fein will be hoping to capitalise on Labour’s local and national problems by fielding two candidates, sitting TD, Des-sie Ellis and Cllr Cathleen Carney Boud.

Cllr Paul McAuliffe is expected to contest for a Fianna Fail seat in the constituency, which had two sitting Government ministers from the party at the beginning of the decade.

It’s unclear who’ll be running for Fine Gael as the party has no current sitting TDs but Cllr Noel

Rock will be putting his name forward and is likely to be given the nod.

Jimmy Dignam will be the Workers’ Party representative and is the only other declared candidate.

At last week’s Labour selec-tion convention Deputy Lyons acknowledged the “difficult deci-sions” made since the last gen-eral election but highlighted his party’s achievements in power.

“It would have been much easier to stay in opposition after the last General Election in 2011,” he said.

“As a party, we entered coali-tion, knowing that difficult deci-sions would have to be made, and some would be seen as un-popular.

“I genuinely believe this coun-try is in a far better position than we inherited back in 2011.

“Unemployment has fallen

from over 15 per cent to just 9.8 per cent and it is contining to fall. The positive benefits of this are felt locally as the Ballymun and Finglas Social Protection area offices have reported consistent drops in unemployment since 2012.

“I am particularly proud of the Ballymun Youth Guarantee, which has helped to decrease youth unemployment in the area by a third.”

ACROSS DUBLIN

Hot dogs warning issuedDOGS Trust and AA Ireland have teamed up to issue a warning about leaving dogs in hot cars this summer.

With temperatures at last starting to soar and families tak-ing pets on holiday across the country the organisations say it’s vital to remember that leav-ing pooch in a parked car can be deadly.

Dogs Trust is asking dog own-ers across the country to be extra vigilant when it comes to travel-ling with dogs.

“More and more hotels in Ireland are dog friendly these days so increasingly we’re see-ing owners take their dogs away with them on domestic holidays, which often means long drives up and down the country particu-larly during the summer season,” said Kathrina Bentley from Dogs Trust Ireland.

The Dogs Trust summer ‘Hot Dogs’ campaign shows that de-spite being a nation of dog lov-ers, many owners are in the habit of leaving their dogs unattended in cars.

AA Ireland also reveals that it

attends to hundreds of dogs that have been accidentally locked in the main cabins and boots of vehicles each year, leaving their owners distraught.

“What tends to happen is that owners step out of the car and leave the keys in the ignition and then the dog jumps up on the central locking button,” says AA Ireland Patrol Lar Byrne.

“We’ve had emergency call outs where multiple dogs have been locked in to vehicles, I re-member one where six dogs were trapped.”

By following seven essential safety tips for keeping your dog happy in the heat, you can ensure that your dog is safe on and off the road this summer:

• Never leave him in the car in warm weather, even if it feels cool outside.

• Always take the keys with you even if just running back into the house to get something.

• Consider using a car sunblind

to provide shade and always car-ry a ready supply of water.

• Avoid long car journeys in hot weather, if you need to travel, avoid the heat of the day.

• Clip fur and apply pet sun cream to easily burned areas: nose, ears, eyelids and belly. DON’T use human sun cream - it can be toxic so visit your local pet shop and get one that is made specifically for dogs.

• Be extra vigilant with older and overweight dogs as they are more prone to overheating. In a real emergency wet your dog thoroughly and use a household fan to blow cool air over their head and body. Seek urgent vet-erinary attention.

• If your dog takes a dip in a lake or pool make sure you rinse him as soon afterwards as pos-sible.

Never allow your dog to drink from ponds unless the water is clear as algae in the water can produce toxins that are rapidly fatal.

Renagh Kelly, Veterinary Sur-geon at Dogs Trust, says dogs can suffer from sunburn, just like us.

“Facing a higher risk are dogs with white or light-coloured hair, those with short or no hair at

all and dogs that have lost hair through allergies or medical treatment,” she added.

“Remember, it is also crucially important not to leave dogs in hot cars. Many dog owners be-lieve it is ok to leave a dog in a car if counter-measures are tak-en, such as parking under a tree or leaving a window open.

“Unfortunately, this is a myth – in reality partially lowering the window has no significant ef-fect on the temperature inside a parked car. Just a few minutes in a hot car can prove fatal for a dog”

If your dog shows signs of dis-tress such as excessive panting, blueness of the tongue or col-

lapse in the heat contact your vet. If you are present at the res-cue of a dog from a hot car that is clearly in distress, seek immedi-ate veterinary advice.

Dampening the dog down with cool (but not freezing) water or cool wet towels will help to start bring down their body tempera-ture.

Dogs Trust are asking dog owners across the country to be extra vigilant when it comes to travelling with your dog.▪

Our Dog of the Week this week is Marley – a two-year-old female Collie Cross. Marley is a beautiful, big strong girl and has been in a loving home already for two years.

She has brains to burn and is super, super clever when it comes to her training. She loves her commands and agility and would love to have more time doing advanced classes and training.

She just adores adult company, having her hair brushed and go-ing on great walks. Could you be the ‘Me’ for Marley?!

If you think you could offer Marley a loving home, call Dogs Trust on 01-8791000 or pop into the centre.

Resource for local nursesTWO Northside nurse special-ists have been presented with a special Diabetes Footcare Resource to support their work in helping locals living with diabetes.

Amanda Ledwith, based in Beaumont Hospital, and Geral-dine McGovern, based in Mater Hospital were recently pre-sented with the resource made available thanks to a unique col-laboration between healthcare company MSD and the Primary Care Diabetes Nurses Network Group.

With 80 per cent of diabe-tes related amputations being completely preventable through regular screening and early in-tervention, this new footcare resource will help Amanda and Geraldine by providing the vital tools they need to examine high risk diabetes patients at an early stage and avoid preventable am-putations and other issues.

Footcare is especially im-

portant for people living with diabetes as long term high blood sugar (glucose) levels can cause the loss of the protective sensa-

tion or ‘pain alarm system’ in the feet and toes – making patients more susceptible to injury, infec-tion and even amputations.

Celeb Spy Xtrawith Rebecca Lee

Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw say they’re delighted to be part of the new ‘X Factor’ judging panel.

In a rather shocking shakeup, ITV managed to lure Rita from the BBC to join Simon Cowell and Cheryl.

It’s believed ITV promised the singer her own primetime shows as part of the move.

It’s always good to be in demand!

Take out your tissues - it turns out ‘American Idol’ is coming to an end.The last ever season of the show will kick off at the begin-ning of next year with judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. The show has put the spotlight on many now-famous faces, including Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson. Why would they axe a show that has produced so many suc-cessful people? It defies logic!

‘Mad Men’ star Jon Hamm says he’ll always have a special place in his heart for the hit series in which he played woman-ising ad man Don Draper. The last ever episode of the show aired on TV last month. Jon says it has actually been a year since they finished filming. In an interview with Jon, he told us that although he’s moved on, he has fond memories of his ‘Mad Men’ days.

Steven Spielberg has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and he thinks Chris Pratt is right up there with them.

Spielberg is executive producer on the move ‘Jurassic World’, the fourth in the popular franchise.

Thanks to Spielberg being a fan, Chris bagged the lead in the new movie.

I was pleased to hear that Benedict Cumberbatch will receive a CBE from the Queen herself for his services to drama. The honour has surprised some industry insiders as CBEs are usually awarded to an actor coming to the end of their ca-reer. Safe to say that Benedict’s is far from over!

That’s it from me. Until next week

When I was 16, I went to see Ash in the SFX Theatre. It was my first ever standing gig and the noise and energy blew me away. I’d already started playing guitar by this stage, but when my ears finally stopped ringing a few days after the show, I was sure that music was going to be my thing. I’ve been lucky to meet Tim Wheeler since then and can confirm that apart from being a great songwriter, he’s also a lovely man.

True to the DS brand strategy of continuous product evolution, the DS 3 is now available with a new six-speed, latest generation automatic transmission, for an even more comfortable drive and smoother gear changes. The new PureTech 110 S&S EAT6 auto versions also deliver improved CO2 emissions, down by more than 40g/km.

For DS Automobiles – the pre-mium brand launched by the PSA group in 2014 – sales success and vehicle appeal go hand in hand

with continuous improvement. The DS 3 exemplifies this, with

regular updates introduced to offer new technological inno-vations and customisation fea-tures.

Following on from the DS LED Vision headlamps in September 2014 and the THP 165 S&S engine with six-speed manual gearbox in November 2014, DS 3 is now available with a new six-speed automatic transmission.

The new EAT6 auto gearbox is coupled with a three-cylinder

PureTech 110 turbocharged pet-rol engine, which produces high levels of torque from low engine revs. This engine and transmis-sion combination accommodates the most relaxed and the most enthusiastic driving styles. Gear shifts are faster and smoother, providing enhanced drivability, responsiveness and accelera-tion. Meanwhile, the efficiency figures speak for themselves: combined cycle fuel consump-tion is 60.1mpg with CO2 emis-sions of 108g/km.

The DS 3 model with this new EAT6 transmission is ‘on sale’ now. First deliveries are sched-uled for July 2015.

Van-tastic news as Berlingo range arrives here in JulyCITROËN’S best-selling LCV, the Berlingo, made its debut with ad-vanced BlueHDi Euro 6 compliant engines – plus specification and styling enhancements – at the CV Show in the UK recently.

The new Berlingo range will be on sale in Ireland from July 2015, bringing with it further running cost reductions and environmen-tal benefits, combined with driver comfort, safety and convenience gains.

The New Berlingo is the first Citroën LCV range to be powered by Euro 6 compliant BlueHDi die-sel engines, which use advanced Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.

Citroën will be extending the application of these low-emis-sions, highly fuel-efficient BlueHDi engines across its entire LCV line-up as part of a rolling programme starting in July 2015 and running

through to September 2016. Citroën is meeting tough Euro

6 requirements for NOx emission reductions with the application of its SCR technology. BlueHDi powered new Berlingo models have an efficient, three-stage SCR process to treat emissions caused by combustion.

BlueHDi powered new Berlingo vans have a 17-litre AdBlue tank, which will last for up to 14,000 miles, depending on the type of vehicle operation. AdBlue is wide-ly available from various outlets, including Citroën dealers.

The new Berlingo range will go on sale in July with a choice of Euro 5 HDi 75 and HDi 90 en-

ETG6 automated manual trans-mission.

The current specification Euro 5 HDi 75 and HDi 90 engines, al-ready among the most efficient available in this sector, will be available in the new Berlingo range until May 2016. Then the

HDi 75 will be replaced by a new, Euro 6 compliant Blue-

HDi 75 engine. More details of the

New Berlingo range will be released at the CV Show, together with homologated emissions and

combined cycle fuel economy figures.

In addition to

the introduction of BlueHDi en-gines, new Berlingo models will gain specification upgrades to benefit both the operator and the driver. Externally, new Berlingo vans have a redesigned grille and front bumper and are avail-able with an optional Look Pack, featuring LED daytime-running lights.

Internally, both new Berlingo LX and Enterprise trim levels gain cruise control and a program-mable speed limiter. Top-of-the-range new Berlingo Enterprise models also gain an upgraded DAB audio system, incorporating a 7-inch touchscreen with Mirror Screen technology. In addition, the new Berlingo Enterprise trim level now includes an alarm for increased security and peace of mind. The new Berlingo range will be on sale in Ireland from next month.▪

Grow it Yourself: It’s a reasonable thing to be

concerned about because of course all of us are supposedly time poor in this modern age. I’ve always wondered about that ex-pression – time poor – it seems an odd thing to pair the words ‘time’ and ‘poor’ together.

We can be actually poor, and not have any money, but time poor people have exactly as

much time available to them as everyone else.

It’s what we choose to do with that time that really counts.

Sometimes I have to spend time ironing – it’s not something that I ever enjoy or would choose to do if I didn’t have to.

But I choose to spend time growing food not because I really have to, but because I love it.

I’ve never worked out how long I spend in the veg patch each week, because it’s not time I re-sent spending. Doing a rough tot, I suppose it’s maybe 6-8 hours a week at this busy time of year.

Eventually, this time spent GIY-ing will invariably result in some food that we can eat – but that’s hardly the point. These stolen moments in the veg patch, when the world is just awakening itself, are the most precious moments of all.

some tips for the gardenfingers. If you do so, the plant

will produce more fruit. You need to

check

your plants once a fortnight or so and nip out any shoots that have appeared.

If one gets away on you un-no-ticed and is very large, remove it carefully with a secateurs - it will

tear the plant if you try to nip it out.

Incidentally, these sideshoots can be

planted into a pot and will become a brand new tomato plant – thrifty or what?

A neat trick is to pot up a sideshoot late in the season (August or Sep-tember) and keep it indoors over the

winter.In the spring

of next year, it will burst in to life, and

produce tomatoes far earlier than your other

plants.

Tip of the week - Grow Flor-ence Fennel

Florence fennel is grown for its aniseed-flavoured swollen bulb – it’s an acquired taste and won’t suit everyone, and it’s also a little difficult to grow well.

On the other hand, it’s an in-credibly attractive plant that will look fantastic in your veggie patch while growing.

It’s worth noting that Florence fennel is a different plant to herb fennel, though the leaves of Flor-ence fennel can be eaten in sal-ads.

Florence fennel is frost tender so it makes sense to wait until June to sow.

Mark out lines and make a shallow drill 1cm deep. Water if dry and sow seed thinly in rows 45cm apart. Thin to 30cm when they have established.

You can also sow Florence fen-nel in module trays if you wish - sow two seeds per module and thin out the weakest one when they germinate.

Plant out after 4-5 weeks. Keep well watered in dry weather (dry soil encourages bolting) and weed regularly. You can earth up

the bulbs as they start to swell to make them whiter and sweeter. Harvest when the bulbs are 7cm across.

Part of the national drive to fight obesity and encourage healthy eating, it is aimed at 7-10 year olds and is designed to tie in with lessons being taught

in primary school. Appropriately entitled ‘Go Bananas’, it can be downloaded free on both Android based tablets and iPads. Details, including a competition that has

a shipping container fitted out to the students design and installed at their school as its prize, are currently being distributed to schools nationwide.

AN EDUCATIONAL tablet app, intended to teach children about bananas, their nutritional value, how and where they are grown, and details regarding climate and other factors that affect their growth, has been launched by banana importers Fyffes.

take the dFei route to collegeYOU may not immediately notice the DFEi building on Cumber-land Street in Dún Laoghaire because it is situated in the quiet end of the town.

However, you can’t help but notice the buzz when you pass through the automatic doors.

It’s the buzz you feel between classes or at break time when the stairs and corridors are filled with learners of all ages and from di-verse backgrounds, who all seem to be on a personal mission.

They might be heading for the library to type up an assignment, or to the sound studio to do a re-cording, the radio studio to carry out an interview or to the TV and film studio for a casting call.

To get a flavour of the buzz, tune into 107.8FM and listen to DFEi’s very own radio station, The Wave. There’s also an archive of great documentaries and reports online at thewaveonline.ie.

Having visited the Criminal Courts of Justice and listened to the evidence in a murder trial, or sat in on a Dáil debate, the jour-nalism learners have plenty to

write about. Other learners of a more sci-

entific bent might be bracing themselves for a dissection in the lab, or for testing their newly acquired veterinary assistance or grooming skills on real animals.

The more corporate minded business learners will be grap-pling with computerised payroll, bookkeeping, spreadsheets and databases, while Office Adminis-tration students will be acquiring the languages of medicine and the law.

In DFEi, you are as likely to see learners carrying T-squares and tool kits as guitars and cameras. That’s because courses like Fur-niture Making and Restoration and Musical Instrument Making and Repair demand the tools of the trade.

Some Sound Engineering learners will have composed their own material and will audi-

tion for the annual college album release. The skills of the Security learners will always be sought for live events.

Newspapers, scripts, and press releases will be written. Ireland’s archaeological heritage will be studied, web sites designed, ar-chitectural models built and fine pieces of furniture made. It’s all in a day’s work at DFEi.

While activities beyond the classroom doors are engaging young (and not so young) minds there is something more impor-tant that the discerning person might notice. That is teachers and learners in conversation.

It might appear like more casual one-to-one classes are taking place on the stairs, the corridors or on the sofa outside the admin office. This will usu-ally be reassurance, explanation or clarification, news about work experience or progression with an assignment.

The big appointments book outside the Guidance Counsel-lor’s office will become fuller as

the academic year unfolds with learners anxious to discuss their Higher Links options – links to NUI, DIT, IADT, NCI, IT Tallaght, IT Blanchardstown, as well as other Institutes of Technology and uni-versities all over Ireland, and be-yond.

If, for whatever reason, you do not get enough points for your chosen third level course, consid-er spending a year in DFEi. It’s an-other tried and tested way to get a place in college through many defined progression routes.

The formula is simple - eight

FETAC Level 5 modules with as many distinctions as you can get. But it takes some work on your part. You need to come to class, complete assignments on time and prepare for exams.

Whether it’s Instrumentation and Robotics in Computing and Technology, Maternity Support in Nursing Studies or Criminology in Security Studies, the teachers are there for you every step of the way, if you are there for them.

Because that’s what DFEi is good at – teaching learners in small classes the fundamental

skills and survival techniques that will put them on the ladder to a third level qualification in their chosen area.

You will be taught how to present work in written and oral format. You will be taught ba-sic research skills, referencing systems, and general academic conventions across all courses. Experience at DFEi shows that every student does not learn in the same way or at the same pace. If you have particular learning support requirements, they will be met at DFEi.

DFEi’s very own radio station, The Wave, can be found on 107.8fm or online at thewaveonline.ie▪

That’s according to the latest research from Peninsula Ireland, which showed that:

•76 per cent of employers say they would not employ someone with a visible tattoo.

•65% of employers believe employees with tattoos may pro-vide an unprofessional image of the business.

•If two candidates were final shortlisted for a job, 82 per cent of those employers questioned say they would give the job to the employee with no visible tat-toos.

Peninsula Ireland spoke with 1,722 Irish employers throughout April and May via telephone who utilise its advice service.

Award delightTJ O’MAHONY’S struck gold at the prestigious Octabuild 2015 Awards held recently in the Mansion house.

The Ballymount store won Best Builder’s Merchants and DIY Store at the awards.

TJ O’Mahony’s fought off stiff competition from 26 other Dublin entrants to finally win this much coveted award.

Judging is based on ‘readinesss for business’ customer service, management and premises, and product range. Commenting on the award, Dennis O’Connor (di-rector) stated that he and the team were absolutely overjoyed with this very special award, as Dublin is a particularly competi-tive sector to win the award in.

“We compete daily with some excellent Builder’s merchants and DIY stores- which demands that our standards have to be consistently high,” he said.

“The true judges are our cus-tomers, who we have to win over day after day, and we can only achieve full customer approval by consistently providing the very best of customer service.

“Our team take enormous pride in ‘going one step further’

Cheap flights to ParisA NEW low-cost option for flights to Paris has landed in Dublin.

Transavia, the low cost airline of the Air France-KLM Group has already flown its first flight to Paris-Orly from Dublin Airport, and is now operating daily.

Paris-Orly airport is the easiest air-port to access the centre of Paris from. The airport’s light railway, the Orlyval, connects the airport to the French cap-

ital’s extensive rail network, including the RER and the Métro.

Fares start from €40 one-way includ-ing taxes. The flights operate daily de-parting Dublin in the evening at 7.55pm except on Saturdays when there’s a 7.50am departure.

Speaking at a launch event at Avenue in Temple Bar last week, Hervé Kozar, Chief Commercial Officer of Transavia said: “We are very glad to open a new route between Dublin and Paris-Orly.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Irish people on board and offer them an attractive price with a high quality of service to Paris.

“We believe very strongly in this Dublin route and we want to stay and grow further in the coming months.”

This summer, Transavia will oper-ate 73 routes from four French air-ports (Paris-Orly Sud, Nantes, Lyon and Strasbourg) including nine new desti-nations.
