From page 1A planning application for the centre is ex-

pected to be lodged over the coming weeksbut the MAAG is planning to fight the proposalall the way.

“We’ve started off as a local group butwe’re planning on spreading the campaign tothe rest of the Finglas area and get the sup-port of other groups,” said group chairman,Thomas Devlin. “We’re totally in favour of aPrimary Care Centre for Finglas but we believethis is the wrong site for it.”

The MAAG say the Mellowes site has beenused a play area for the local children for over

35 years and the centre would cause in-creased traffic congestion in the area.

They believe it could also put childrengoing to school at rick of being involved in atraffic accident and cause parking problems inthe area.

The action group also feel there could besafety issues in relation to the access of emer-gency services to a local electricity substationand say the centre’s proposed location maylead to privacy issues due to its close proxim-ity to private housing in the area.

“We’ll be looking for support from localTDs who will be facing election in two years

time,” Mr Devlin told Northside People.“We’ll oppose it at planning and go to An

Bord Pleanala if needs be. We’re in this for thelong haul.

“We want a Primary Care Centre for Fin-glas and we will get one, we’re entitled to it,but they can’t just plonk it where they wantand say ‘well it’s there or nowhere’.”

The HSE says it has been engaging withmembers of the Finglas community to answerany questions in advance of making its plan-ning application.

“The HSE did an extensive evaluation ofmultiple sites and the development site off

Mellowes Road was selected as the most suit-able location to deliver the Primary Care Cen-tre for the Finglas South area, Finglas Westarea and the new communities in the areasrecently developed in Finglas North,” aspokesperson said.

“It has very good accessibility; it is wellserved by bus routes; it is a generous green-field site with appropriate zoning and wouldhave no impact on current health servicesduring the construction period.

“The HSE is aware of some concerns fromsome of the local residents. The HSE is alsoaware of strong support for the development.

Over the last two years the HSE have metwith Dublin City Council officials along withlocal representatives and local residents’groups regarding this very positive develop-ment for Finglas on a number of occasions.”

The proposed centre will be 2,700 sq mtsin size from where three Primary Care Teamswill deliver a range of services includingspeech and Language therapy, physiotherapyand occupational therapy.

Accommodation for 10 GP clinics and so-cial work professionals will also be includedin the facility and it will house an adult men-tal health out-patient service.

Euro jobs chief visits BallymunJack Gleeson

ONE of Europe’s most influential figures when it comes tojobs visited Dublin last week to see first hand the YouthGuarantee pilot project in Ballymun.

The EU-wide initiative isproviding up to e8 billion forjobs, training and education forunder 25s and Ballymun wasselected as one of just 18 areas

across Europe to pilot thescheme.

Last week European Com-missioner for Employment, So-cial Affairs and Inclusion, László

Andor, was welcomed to Bally-mun by Minister for Social Pro-tection, Joan Burton to see howthe project was working on theground.

The guarantee is designedto ensure all under 25s receivea good quality offer of employ-ment, continued education, anapprenticeship or a traineeship

within four months of leavingformal education or becomingunemployed.

It was developed in re-sponse to the youth unemploy-ment crisis across Europe werean estimated 7.5 million youngpeople aged 15-24 are not em-ployed, not in education andnot in training.

Commissioner Andor andMinister Burton worked closelyto secure the agreement ofMember States on the YouthGuarantee during Ireland’s Pres-idency of the European Councilin 2013.

The selection of Ballymunfor a pilot project was seen as amajor boost for what is one ofthe areas hardest hit in Irelandby unemployment.

During his visit Commis-sioner Andor recalled what hedescribed as “the invaluabledrive and commitment” of Min-ister Burton to adopt the YouthGuarantee.

“I thank Ireland for the im-

portant concrete steps it has al-ready taken to implement thescheme,” he said.

“The Youth Guarantee pilotproject in Ballymun, one of the18 that the Commission is cur-rently co-financing, is an ambi-tious project, and one that willgive us valuable experience onhow to develop the Youth Guar-antee not only in Ireland but inall Member States.

“It is also an inspiring exam-ple of how Ireland has put togood use available fundingfrom the European Social Fund.I now encourage the Irish au-thorities to continue their goodwork to put the guarantee intoeffect.”

Minister Burton said Com-missioner Andor had been in-strumental in the developmentof the Youth Guarantee.

“I’m delighted to welcomehim to Ballymun to see the pilotproject at first hand,” she said.

“In Ireland, we have madegood progress in reducing un-

employment generally, includ-ing youth unemployment, butwe have much more to do. TheGuarantee is central to thatprocess, and is about ensuringyoung jobseekers have thework, training and educationopportunities they need.”

Earlier this year MinisterBurton launched an implemen-tation plan setting out how theGuarantee will be implementednationwide over the course of2014 and 2015.

“The very encouraging workundertaken in Ballymun to datewill provide important lessonsfor us in implementing theGuarantee in other parts of thecountry so that our young job-seekers get the chance to buildthe best possible futures forthemselves, their families andtheir communities,” she contin-ued.

The Ballymun pilot involvesan initial group engagement atthe local Intreo office, the De-partment’s ‘one stop shop’

service where jobseekers getincome and employment sup-ports in the one place.

Jobseekers are then referredto the Local Employment Serv-ice for a one-to-one interviewwith a career guidance workerwhere a personal progressionplan is agreed.

Based on an assessment ofneeds, the person will be guar-anteed an offer of basic skillsdevelopment, further educationor training, work experience oremployment within fourmonths.

All people under 25 on theLive Register in the Ballymunarea are eligible for the pilot.

Over the course of this year, processes and programmes willbe progressively rolled out toensure that young unemployedacross Ireland who have a lowprobability of finding employ-ment without significant sup-port will receive a YouthGuarantee offer within fourmonths.

ST MARY’S Hospital will be host-ing a Healing Garden at Bloom2014 in Phoenix Park over theJune Bank Holiday.

The hospital, also based inPhoenix Park, says the garden is de-signed to highlight the benefits ofusing horticulture as a therapeuticmedium.

“The provision of purposeful occu-pation within the gardens is one ofthe prime objectives for the resident’swell-being, and the numerous tasksinvolved in gardening make it a won-derful activity that is adaptable to in-dividual needs,” a spokesperson said.

The Healing Garden was selectedby the judges to participate in the

Bloom Postcard Section, which re-flects the ideals and focus of commu-nity gardening in Ireland.

The garden was designed in con-sultation with the residents and vol-unteers of The Green Bubblehorticultural project in St Mary’s.

The circular design of The HealingGarden was created to represent thesimilarity between plant and humanlife cycles, from propagation, throughthe growing cycle to reach the heightof their potential reflecting the won-der of the creation.

The layered levels give consider-ation to garden design and access tothose with specific needs. The layoutof the stand reflects the various grow-ing stages.

The Healing Garden Project is anoccupational therapy initiative deliv-ered by St Mary’s to harness thehealth-giving properties of a commu-nal garden for patients and residentson the campus.

The hospital caters mainly for theelderly, many of whom have chosenit as their final residence, where theycan be assured of getting the careand supports they require.

The Garden, and its associated off-shoots – a garden club, a magazineand sales of any produce – provideengagement in a meaningful activityand give opportunities to residents tomaintain or develop roles that aremeaningful to them.

Rick Steves

For this honour, we sign upmonths in advance, often paydearly, and never regret it. Whilethe logistics of setting up shotscan sometimes be a headache, this comes with the immense joyof being all alone with magnifi-cent art.

This past year I’ve beenaroused (artistically) while alonewith Klimt’s sultry Kiss in Vienna;I’ve stood silent and solitary be-fore the mysterious Mona Lisa inParis; and I’ve marvelled atLeonardo’s Last Supper in Milanand Michelangelo’s David in Flo-rence.

My experience isn’t thenorm, and most travellers don’thave the option of quiet time ontheir own with art masterpieces. But there are many ways to feelthat “wow” moment when trav-eling in Europe.

Start with the thought that“art” is more than a painting ona museum wall or a statue in acloistered gallery. Tune up yoursenses, and you’ll find yourselftreated to artistic experiencesthat others miss.

Occasionally, something assimple as opening a hotel win-

Europe’s Powerful Artistic ExperiencesMY TV crew and I often enjoy the rare privilege of filminginside Europe’s great museums and palaces on days whenthey are closed to the public.

dow can turn into a lovely sur-prise. In the early evening inChartres last summer, for exam-ple, a thunderstorm rolledthrough, cleaning out the muckyair.

I opened my window, andthere in the near distance glis-tened France’s most famouscathedral, its stones warmed bythe setting sun. I positioned mychair for the view, put my stock-ing feet on the windowsill, andenjoyed one of those great Euro-pean moments.

It’s really when you - thetraveller - enter the equationthat the best art experiences

happen. But it can be hard to feelengaged when you’re shufflingthrough Europe’s most crowdedmuseums on hot, crowded dayswith mobs of tourists.

If you’re traveling in peakseason, consider venturing be-yond the blockbuster must-seesights. Look for those Europe-perfect art moments to makeyour own. Here are a few of mycurrent favourites.

In Prague, I took a trolley ridejust a few blocks beyond thetouristy, crowded city core to anondescript building, theVeletržní Palace. Inside, in a cool, spacious gallery, I found myselfvirtually alone with the 20 mas-sive canvases of Alfons Mucha’smagnum opus, the Slav Epic.

Mucha is well known for hisdecorative Art Nouveau designsfrom the early 20th century, buthe poured his heart into this ex-pressive painting cycle, whichpowerfully connects Czech his-tory with the humanity of theSlavic soul and eons of beingdowntrodden and dominated byneighbours.

Staring at these epic sceneswith larger-than-life Slav kings, warriors, and maidens, I foundmyself appreciating the time-lessness of the struggles of Eu-rope’s weaker tribes.

Some of Europe’s mostthought-provoking art is prehis-toric - like the Lascaux Cave inFrance’s Dordogne region.Guides in the area call this cave- with its frescoed horses, deer, and bulls - the “Sistine Chapel ofthe prehistoric world.”

The vast cave looks amaz-ingly like my (very healthy)colonoscopy photograph. Butprehistoric caves need help tobe brought to life. That’s whatmuseums are for.

Looking at the collection oforiginal artefacts in the nearbymuseum, I actually felt a con-nection with my ancient ances-

tors. Their fish hooks and barbedspears would work as welltoday as when they were made17,000 years ago.

I imagined the fine jew-ellery, tenderly strung with stagteeth and tiny shells, charmingfriends, family and loved ones12,000 years before more mod-ern people built the great pyra-mids in Egypt.

As travellers, we prize speed- from bullet trains to Internetconnections - but it can alsothreaten our ability to simplypause and enjoy. These days, it’smore important than ever toslow down and smell the roses,

or even the people, to noticethe play of the up-lighting on anensemble of Gothic French stat-ues.

I was sitting solitary on abench enjoying the floodlit fa-cade of the cathedral in Reims,France. It was dark, and I wasmunching on a late dinner - arustic baguette with cheese.

Suddenly the bum on thenext bench leaned over and of-fered me a swig from his crum-pled-up plastic bottle of redwine. I didn’t take it, but thegesture and his smile, juxta-posed with that glorious Gothicfacade, warmed my meal and

helped complete an experiencethat gave me a memory I’llenjoy for the rest of my life.

Thoughtful, rewarding travelgoes way beyond collecting fa-mous sights. It’s more about col-lecting insights, andappreciating the experiencesthat surprise, thrill, challenge, inspire, and connect us.

● Novelist, playwright and poetDermot Bolger attended Be-neavin College as a youngsterand his working class roots arereflected in much of his work.Shortly after he left school in1977 he founded Raven ArtsPress Publications and pub-lished several works which hesold around Finglas. He’s writ-ten several novels, plays andcollections of poetry. During theprocess he’s picked up numer-ous awards include the SamuelBeckett award and the AE Me-morial Prize.

● Comedian Brendan O’Carrollfound fame relatively late in lifewhen he turned to the stage

aged 35. His comedy had – andstill has – a huge following inFinglas and it wasn’t long be-fore he was packing out pubs, clubs and then theatres acrossDublin. In 1992, he wrote MrsBrown’s Boys which made hima millionaire but a movie proj-ect dream turned into a finan-cial nightmare which took himthe best part of a decade to re-cover from. And it was MrsBrown who helped Brendan re-cover his mojo and put himback on the road to award win-ning success.

● Colm Meaney began study-ing acting when he was 14 andentered the Abbey Theatre

School of Acting after leavingsecondary school. He picked upa few minor TV roles but hit thebig time when he played therole of Miles O'Brien in thehugely popular Star Trek: TheNext Generation series. He latermoved to Star Trek: Deep SpaceNine where his character had ahigher profile. He’s starred innumerous moves, including allthree adaptations of RoddyDoyle’s Barrytown Trilogy andThe Damned United in which heplayed legendary Leeds Unitedmanager, Don Revie.

● Paul Hewson is definitely themost famous face of Finglas.Bono rose to fame with his fel-low U2 band members and waspart of the Lypton Village gangthat include Guggi and GavinFriday. He writes the lyrics foralmost all U2 songs and has col-laborated with legends likeFrank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, BobDylan and Tina Turner. He’s in-volved in lots of social and po-litical causes including thecampaign to end third-worlddebt. Time Magazine has twicenamed him as one of the

world’s 100 most influentialpeople.

● Christy Dignam is the leadsinger of Finglas’s favouriterock-band, Aslan. His 30-yearcareer has included numerouschart successes, band break-upsand well documented problemswith drug addiction. However,Christy always bounced back toplay sell-out live gigs withAslan who are widely acknowl-edged to be Ireland’s hardestworking band. In March 2013,he was diagnosed with cancerbut within a year he was backagain to announce three bigsummer shows at the OlympiaTheatre in Dublin at the end ofthis month.

Finglas has had more than its fair share of famous faces. Here’s five people who’ve made their mark outside of area.

The main street in Howth showing the Church of the Assumption on a postcard dated 1905. Work commenced on the church, designed by WH Byrne, in 1894. However, during excavation of the site, the remains of an armoury were found. It is thought that this may have been the place where Sir Armorey Tristam’s and Sir John deCourcey’s Knights got ready for battle, when they landed at Howth in 1177. Tristam’s victory secured him the title to the Lands of Howth and became the first Baron ofHowth. The church was consecrated by Archbishop Walsh of Dublin on 15 October 1899. However, the tower took longer to build and the planned spire was never completed. The church bell was installed in the tower in 1906.• Photo and caption from ‘Images of Ireland’, North Dublin, by Derek Stanley. Published by Gill & Macmillan/The History Press

This excessive iron burden leads to impaired function of these organs and eventually to disease and organ failure. It is more commonin Ireland than in any other country and it is estimated that one in 83 Irish people are predisposed to iron overload. So are Irish businesses getting there? In a recent survey conducted by IPSOS MRBI andBank of Ireland 67% of Irish SME owners stated thatthey are optimistic about the next 12 months and 61%expect to grow their businesses in the second half ofthis year.73% of respondents believe the Irish econ-omy is stable or growing, and 63% believe employ-ment in Ireland will improve in the year ahead. 47% ofSMEs said their one big ambition for the year aheadwas business growth with 10% citing increased profits.

How might your bank help to achieve your busi-ness goals for the rest of 2014?

Gabriel Bannigan, Regional Manager, Dublin, Bank ofIreland explains how we can help.

1. Supporting your borrowing needs First on the list for those applying is an up to date busi-ness plan which includes details of; background, man-agement and organisational structure, market researchand a marketing plan, distribution, sales, operationsand financial management. The second and evenmore important piece of information is around the fi-nancials and repayment capacity – outlining balancesheets, profit and loss accounts and cash-flow state-ments. Finally, there is the credit application form thatneeds to be completed and we are available to helpcustomers do this.

We fully expect demand from the SME sector for creditto continue to grow in 2014. Bank of Ireland approved€4bn in new and increased funds to the sector in 2013

and in the first quarter in 2014 we approved €1.1bn.This works out at over 500 businesses and farmersborrowing funds from the Bank every week.

2. Supporting key sectors like AgricultureOne of the sectors that is showing good growth is theagri/food sector. Providing specialist finance options aswell as advice is key to the sector. One of the biggestchanges over the next year will be the removal of milkquotas in the dairy sector. This will see many dairyfarmers considering the best ways to grow and expandproduction, and many will need to access finance tofurther their ambitions. Bank of Ireland has the avail-able credit and appetite to support the agri sectorthrough this development opportunity.

3. Helping you start up a new businessStarting a new business is an exciting time for entre-preneurs, but it can also be very challenging. Impor-tant choices will include selecting your banking partnerand researching the extra supports they provide suchas access to local accountant and solicitor practices.Last year, 16,000 new businesses chose Bank of Ire-land to partner them in their new ventures.

Finally our recent National Enterprise Week is a tangi-ble way of how we support SMEs. 1,200 businessesshowcased their businesses throughout our 250-strong nationwide Branch network. In addition, over200 speed networking and credit clinics were held anda series of Economic breakfast briefings and SocialMedia clinics held in various locations across thecountry proved very popular.

Is your bank helpingyou get there?

Whether you are running an existing business or considering starting a new one, choosing abanking partner for your business can be one of your most important decisions. You need aBank that will help you to get there, wherever your there is. It might be to export to new mar-kets, purchase new property, get your business mobile or access new working capital.

Gabriel Bannigan, Regional Manager, Dublin, Bank of Ireland

The oh so handsome Michael Fassbender has said therewas loads of messing about on the set of his latest X-Men movie, ‘Days of Future Past’.

The actor stars alongside James McAvoy and Hugh Jack-man in the film which sees Wolverine travel back in timeto change the future.

Speaking exclusively to Dublin’s Q102, Michael saidhimself and the guys couldn’t stop playing with pellet gunsin between shoots and were constantly getting into trou-ble!

Liam Payne thinks he looks like David Beckham. The One Direction singer joked he would work as a

Beckham lookalike if One D ever call it quits. His comments come after photos of the pair together

showed just how similar they look.I don’t know about you but I can’t see One Direction

packing it in anytime soon!

It seems good things truly do come to those who wait.Hollywood actress Halle Berry says she feels blessed to

have been able to give birth to her son last year as shedidn't think she could conceive.

Halle also married the baby's father, Olivier Martinez, after saying she never thought she would get to tie theknot (who in their right mind would turn Halle down!)

The late Michael Jackson was among the performers atthe Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

He appeared as a hologram at the event singing ‘Slaveto the Rhythm’, which is taken from his posthumous newalbum ‘XSCAPE’.

It’s reported organisers used the same technology thatmade the late rap legend Tupac Shakur appear at theCoachella Music Festival in 2012.

That’s it from me. Until next week,
