“He was making referenceto my campaign slogan ‘one ofour own’. His insinuation thatthis term can only be applied toIrish born candidates is farcical. It is clear that the slogan is re-ferring to the fact that I am alocal resident of the area inwhich I am seeking to repre-sent in Fingal council.

“It is wrong of him to play

party politics with an issue asserious as this.

“We need unity on theproblem of racism and weneed to work together to over-come it.

“I am demanding that CllrDennison formally withdrawhis remarks and apologise tome immediately.”

A Sinn Fein spokespersonadded: “To try and suggest that

a candidate saying they arefrom the local community is‘racist’ is pathetic.

“The level of support Na-talie is receiving is outstandingand likely to see her elected asSinn Féin’s first councillor inCastleknock.

“That is obviously the realreason for this ill-informedstatement from a Fine Gaelrepresentative.”

It’s the second time theracism issue has hit the head-lines in Dublin 15 during theelection campaign. Last week ina separate story, Northside Peo-ple reported how posters be-longing to Memet Uludag ofPeople Before Profit Alliancehad been defaced by racists.

Large pieces of raw baconhad been pinned to his postersnear Superquinn Shopping Cen-tre. Mr Uludag, who has beenliving in Ireland since 1998 andis an Irish citizen, is originallyfrom Turkey, which is a predom-inantly Muslim country.

Mr Uludag said he has re-ceived a huge amount of sup-port following coverage of thestory.

“I hope all of this turned anasty situation in our societyinto a positive message,” headded.

“There were huge numbersof support messages and I evenhad some people saying, ‘Iwon't vote for you but I supportyour anti-racist stand’. I thinkthis is very important for a fu-ture of harmony in society.”

Iconic Boiler House to be savedJack Gleeson

BALLYMUN’S Boiler House has been saved from demolitionthanks to a massive e3.6 million cash boost from Europe.

The iconic building was dueto be torn down as part of theBallymun Regeneration Projectbut it will now be transformedinto a centre of ‘green’ learningthanks to a successful campaignled by local environmentalgroup, The Rediscovery Centre.

Backed by Dublin City Councilthe centre applied for fundingfrom the EU’s LIFE+ financial in-

strument for an ambitious proj-ect to revamp the building anduse it to as a centre of excellencefor sustainable development.

Rumours that the e3.6 mil-lion application had been ap-proved were officially confirmedlast week and work, facilitatedby co-funding from the Depart-ment of the Environment, Com-

munity and Local Government, isexpected to begin before theend of the year.

Confirmation of the fundingwas met with delight by Redis-covery Centre manager, Dr SarahMiller.

“The reuse of the boilerhouse to create a centre of ex-cellence is in keeping with thecentral ethos of the RediscoveryCentre which seeks to createvalue from waste resources,”she said.

BENEFITS“The centre will provide an

innovative platform for us todemonstrate the benefits of re-source reuse and recovery and todeliver further education, train-ing and skills development pro-grammes.”

The Ballymun boiler housewith its distinctive red and whitestriped chimney was originallybuilt in the 1960’s to providewater and heating to the 36 flatblocks and some associated pub-lic buildings in the area.

Decommissioned in 2010 itwas due to be demolished aspart of the local regenerationproject. However, the Rediscov-ery Centre and Dublin City Coun-cil recognised theenvironmental, economic andsocial benefits the building couldbe put to in the new Ballymun.

“The activities of the pro-posed centre are core to ambi-tions set out in national wasteand sustainability policies andwill encourage eco-innovation,environmental best practice andthe creation of green sectorjobs,” said Declan Wallace of

Dublin City Council.News of the funding was

also welcomed by local council-lor, Paul McAuliffe (FF), who de-scribed it as “great news forboth the Rediscovery Centre andBallymun”.

“It means one of the last re-maining buildings of the 1960'sBallymun estate is set to be'reused' and recycled' thanks toEuropean funding,” he said.

“The project will transformthe abandoned Boiler House intoa state-of-the-art environmen-tally efficient building that willbe a fantastic resource to attractpeople from all over the city.

“The completed project willalso enable The RediscoveryCentre to increase the numbersinvolved in its various employ-ment training initiatives and willfacilitate an increase in the num-ber of schools and other groupsattending educational pro-grammes at the already accred-ited National Discover ScienceCentre.”

Sinn Féin local election candi-date, Noeleen Reilly, congratu-lated the Rediscovery Centre forits hard work in securing thefunding.

“As a resident of Ballymun Ilook forward to see the excitingdevelopments with the boilerhouse in the coming years,” sheadded.

LARGEST“With unemployment at un-

precedented levels in the area, Iwould be calling on those in-volved in the project, where pos-sible, to employ local people inthis development, whether it bethrough construction jobs, ad-ministration or in other areas.”

Built in the 1960's the BoilerHouse provided heating and hotwater to over 2,800 families. Itwas one of the largest heatingsystems in the British Isles whenbuilt.

The method of supplyingwater to the flats was also un-usual in that it was pumped di-

rectly from a nearby centralreservoir to the taps in the indi-vidual flats, replacing the needfor large storage tanks on theroofs of the blocks.

On July 29, 2010, the BoilerHouse shut down for the lasttime and a new localised heat-ing system came online to caterfor the energy needs of the re-maining flats.

As a famous local landmarkthe building has been the sub-ject of many artistic projects overthe years including AndrewKearney's memorable 'Illumina-tion of the Boiler House' in 2002.

Kearney's project ran for twoyears and heralded the begin-ning of 'Breaking Grounds' com-missions, an innovative projectthat brought numerous art in-stallations to Ballymun.

Early in 2010, the BoilerHouse site was put forward foran international competition –the European 10 architecturalcompetition – to attract youngtalent to find an innovative ar-chitectural and urban solution forthe site. Boiler-House Art Studios'by Ross Lambe Architect (UK)won the award for the Ballymunsite.

Candidates hoping for Independents dayVOTERS in the Ballymun ward, which includes Finglaseast, Whitehall, Santry, Glasnevin, Drumcondra andparts of Beaumont, have plenty of choice in the localelections on May 23 but the most diverse group ofcandidates are the independents.

There’s six in total, and withthe mainstream parties strug-gling to pacify an angry con-stituency hit hard by cutbacks, property tax and water charges, they’ll have high hopes of tak-ing seats in this seven seater.

Four of the independentsgot together earlier this monthto officially launch their cam-paigns in a show of solidarityfor the lone wolf candidate whohas become an integral part ofthe political landscape both lo-cally and nationally.

Here’s what some of themhave to say for themselves.

Seán Tyrrell: Aged just 21 Tyrrell, who

was born and raised in the flatsof Ballymun, is one of theyoungest candidates on the bal-lot.

A former player with Bally-mun Kickhams and now in hisfinal year of a degree in Eco-nomics, Politics and Law in DCU,he believes the council has be-come “out-dated with out-dated ideas” and policies.

Tyrrell is vice chairperson ofBallymun Tidy Towns and vol-unteers with the Reco in Bally-

mun and the Network of Resi-dent Advisers (NORA).

“I grew up on the buildingsite of Ballymun watching peo-ple from the area and beyondtry to build a life and a home forthemselves, but always beinggiven the ‘run around’ by suc-cessive councils and govern-ments.”

Tyrrell promises not to ‘dou-ble job’ if elected and will worktoward reducing property taxand ensuring it’s invested backinto the community.

Reducing commercial ratesfor local business and makingcouncillors’ expenses moretransparent and vouched arealso amongst his aims.

Peter McDonnellRetired Chief Medical Scien-

tist Peter McDonnell has lived inDublin 9 for over 40 years andsays he’s “very much aware ofthe issues affecting people inDrumcondra, Whitehall, Santry,Glasnevin and Ballymun”.

He believes the upcominglocal election will offer votersthe opportunity to elect a newbatch of councillors with freshideas to improve neighbour-

hoods in the area.“We need fresh ideas and

thinking,” he said. “This is youropportunity to improve yourvoice on an enlarged Dublin CityCouncil. More of the same isn'tgood enough - The Party Sys-tem has let us down.”

If elected, McDonnell wantsto lobby for a better publictransport system in Dublin 9and 11 and the elimination ofwasteful spending such as theestimated e225 million spenton shelved transport projects.

He’ll also fight for bettertraffic management and an in-creased Garda presence on thestreets.

Cearúil SwordsBorn and raised in Dublin,

Swords has worked and studiedabroad. He was a radio stationmanager before becoming anauthor, group facilitator andteacher.

Last year he published abook titled 'What now? Life, theLeaving Cert and Planning yourNext Steps' to assist students inbetter understanding and man-aging the transition out of sec-ondary education into the widerworld.

“Strong, caring communitiesare built by the quality of our in-teractions with one another yetmany of us spend little timewith neighbours or the people

living on the streets close to us,”he says.

“This needs to change if weare going to tackle social ills andeconomic difficulties i.e. rowback on the austerity measuresand indirect taxes inflicted uponus.”

Swords wants to create reg-ular, varying events that willsupport the public to socialiseand collaborate together. Ifelected he promises to defendrights to services and amenitiesand work on behalf of individu-als and groups on specific is-sues.

Agnieszka Wieczorkowska

Wieczorkowska is a clinicalpsychologist and a HR Consult-ant and she’s the first Pole torun in the area. She lives withher family in Ballymun andworks in Ballymun and the citycentre. Her daughter learns inCorpus Christi GNS, Drumcondra, and her husband works as asoftware engineer. Profession-ally she is a clinical psychologistand a HR Consultant.

Wieczorkowska wants tobring to Dublin City Council theexperience and perspective of a

woman, mother and migrant. She’d like to help make a realdifference to the lives of peoplewith disabilities drawing fromher own experiences.

She has been a social ac-tivist for many years with theBallymun Intercultural Groupand the Ballymun Active Dis-ability Interest Group. Wiec-zorkowska has beenencouraging fellow Poles tovote in the election through herinvolvement with the Forum

Polonia campaign called ‘Vote. You are at home’.

She believes it’s time to “lis-ten to the voice of diversity” andto find a space for differentgroups in political life and wantsto represent all citizens, regard-less of nationality and back-ground. If elected she willcampaign for safe, friendly play-grounds for children, cleanerparks and facilities for teenagers.

Local scouts go mountain highTWELVE Scouts and three Scouters (Leaders) from Northsidegroups in Tolka Scout County have shown they’ve goodheads for heights after successfully completing the Mun-ster Mountain Pursuit Challenge.

The challenge was held lastmonth (April 11-13) in theKnockmealdown Mountains lo-cated on the border of Co Tip-perary and Co Waterford andthe Scouts and Scouters whotook part were from scout

groups based on Navan Roadand Aughrim Street.

Tolka Scout County supportsand develops Scouting in theNorth West of Dublin City(Dublin 1, 7, 9 and 11) and haseight active Scout Groups in

these areas, covering all ageranges from 6 to 26.

The Mountain Pursuit Chal-lenge (MPC) event takes placefour times, one in eachProvince, every year and 2014was the 23rd anniversary of theevents.

Each MPC is organised, de-veloped and staffed by mem-bers of the MPC Team who areall experienced Scouters. Some

hold Mountain Leader (ML)Awards and all are experiencedin mountainous terrain, includ-ing remote emergency care andmanagement skills.

The MPC provides an oppor-tunity for four Scouts and aScouter to participate in anevent in the mountains of Ire-land, camping and cooking forthemselves along a definedroute designed to test theirscout skills, especially self suffi-ciency and working as team.

The events are aimed atScouts aged between 13 and16. A total of 20 teams from allparts of Ireland, includingBelfast, Dublin and Cork, partic-ipated in the Munster MPC thisyear.

The weather and terrain arehuge factors in undertaking anMPC and the recent event wasno different. A lovely moon litdry night on the Friday nightwas perfect for a walk into BaseCamp along forest roads beforethe tents went up and the teamhit the hay just after midnight.

Saturday dawned bright andsunny, but that changed tomist, coupled with wind andrain until the late afternoon. Thevisibility on Saturday was lessthan 10 metres so navigationalskills were to the fore as theevent certainly lived up to the‘challenge’ in its name.

Zara, a Scout from NavanRoad reported “that the weathermade the climb tough, but I’mso glad I did it.”

The weather front latermoved and was replaced bywonderful sunshine, clear blueskies and a gentler wind for therest of the afternoon andevening.

High Camp was around twosmall lakes at the head of a val-ley with the majesty of Knock-mealdown Mountain (794metres) as the backdrop.

On Sunday morning a ScoutsOwn was held, where thosepresent acknowledged whatthey achieved over the week-end, while remembering thosewho do not have as much asthey do. Following this, all theScouts and Scouters receivedtheir MPC badge.

High Camp was then dis-banded and all teams hikeddown from the mountains, con-tinuing along the defined route, via forests, fire breaks and forestroads back to the finishing point.

Checking in at finishing pointoffers teams an opportunity torelax, obtain a new MPC t-shirtor hoodie and chill out for awhile with friends both longstanding and newly made.

Everbody then heads home-ward bound, with another ad-venture over and already

starting to plan a new one. Whosays being young and being aScout isn’t fun!

Alex a Scout from NavanRoad says that “he cannot waitfor the next one.”

The final words go to Benand Leon, also from Navan RoadScouts. Ben described his expe-rience as “one of the hardest

things that I ever done, but itwas great!” While Leon added“that was just brilliant.”

A NEW poetry collection by ayoung writer entitled Photons wasofficially launched recenty by au-thor and playwright ProfessorFrank McGuinness.

In his speech about the new bookby Peter Donnelly, Professor McGuin-ness noted that, “the most striking andadmirable feature that struck me whenI read through the whole collection isthe sheer size and the ambition of thebook".

The launch took place at the UCDCampus Bookshop with a large crowdall out to greet the first time author andjoin in the support for the publication.

Peter (25) from Dalkey, graduatedwith a BA International and an MA inEnglish from University College, Dublintwo years ago.

In 2010 he began to publish poetryin journals across Ireland and withinUCD, where he won the UndergraduatePoetry Award.

His work has been said to createworlds in which “the familiar and thealien have been seamlessly fused to-gether”, by the 2013 University Ob-server’s Arts Editor Steven Balbirnie.

According to the publisher, "Pho-tons sheds fresh light on a wide spec-trum of human experience in verses of

striking originality and technical assur-ance".

Such sentiments were clearly sup-ported by Professor McGuinness, whoduring his speech about the new workstated, "What dexterity of meters thereis in it, what splendid sensitivity to thestrange changes of the natural world.

“What sheer delight in the diversityof themes and the diversity of tones, giving this verse its voice, a voice thatis already sounding its sureness ofidentity. A voice capable of characteris-ing its deeper self and finding in thatdepth much to fear and much to iden-tify.”

Photons is a collection of works thatlooks back to the poets such as JohnDonne and his contemporaries, and en-gages with the spirits of Modernism.

According to Professor McGuinness,"Peter Donnelly already shows he hasa strong imagination. Indeed, a savageone presents itself on occasion whenthe beautiful and brutal confront andconfound each other.”

The volume has also been noted forincluding a first time English translationof one of Dante's Cantos.

Photons is available to buy at theUCD Campus Bookshop and on Amazonfor e11.99.

Sometimes Irish politics can be too localTony McCullagh

A FRIEND of mine gets annoyed when I refer to a certainformer Taoiseach as 'Bertie'. He believes it confers on hima cosy familiarity and gives unwarranted credibility toAhern's man of the people image.

When you look back onBertie's - sorry, Mr Ahern's -tenure as Taoiseach, there issomething distinctly Irish abouthow he portrayed himself asjust an ordinary Joe, sipping ona pint of Bass with his bestmates in Fagan's.

Such whimsical folksinessseemed out of kilter with hisday job. Can you imagine TonyBlair or David Cameron poppingacross the road for half a bitterin Ye Olde London Tavern aftera hard day's work as BritishPrime Minister, chewing the fatwith some salt of the earthCockney geezers? Somehowyou can't.

And what about Ahern'ssuccessor, Brian Cowen, theman we affectionately refer toas Biffo? This was a politicianwho marked his elevation tothe leadership of Fianna Failand the highest office in theland with a rousing ballad infront of an appreciative homecrowd. But that's just the startof his talents. Cowen is also anoted mimic, although it has tobe said he does a pretty lousyimpression of a Taoiseach.

Let's go back further. It tooka tribunal of inquiry to confirmwhat we long suspected aboutthe source of Charles Haughey'swealth, yet many of us stillrefer to the former Taoiseach as'Charlie' as if he were some ca-

sual avuncular acquaintanceand not the crooked, dishonestpolitician he was found to be.Haughey personified the nodand wink politics that wouldeventually result in the loss ofour economic sovereignty.

ACCESSBut he was met with mes-

siah-like affection by many ofhis constituents in Dublin NorthCentral for decades. To them, whatever their misgivings,'Charlie' could do no wrong.

In Ireland we have a ten-dency to celebrate the convivi-ality of our politicians. We likethe easy access we get to themat their clinics in the local pubor community centre. Fair playto that councillor for buying twobooks of raffle tickets at the

school fundraiser. And JaneyMack, wasn't that TD great toshow up at me granddad's fu-neral even though they hadnever met when he was alive?

But such over-familiarity be-tween politicians and their con-stituents isn't necessarilyhealthy for our democracy.Politicians should not be put in aposition where they feel pres-surised into making representa-tions on behalf of theirstaunchest supporters. For ex-ample, they could be asked tointervene in a planning row ormay be approached for help bythe family of a convicted crimi-nal.

With the local elections tak-ing place on May 23, our councilchambers will soon be filledwith many new faces along withsome familiar ones. We willwant our councillors to keepabreast of local issues and rep-resent our interests fairly and ef-fectively. For our part, we shouldlet them do their work withoutthem feeling a sense of personalduty to us in return for our vote.In this country, politics cansometimes be too local to thedetriment of the national inter-est.

If politics is to change, weneed to change with it.

Suicide preventiongroup in voter pleaSUICIDE Prevention Charity 3Ts has launched a newcampaign aimed at local election candidates.

The group is calling for agreater commitment fromcouncillors to fight for improvedsuicide prevention resources inIreland.

Similarly, the ‘ASK’ cam-paign urges members of thepublic to consider the commit-ment of election candidates tosuicide prevention when cast-ing their votes on May 23.

3ts Chairman Noel Smythhas reiterated his belief thatpoliticians repeatedly ignorethe issue of suicide preventionin Ireland because “the deadcan’t vote”.

“We have known for a longtime that we have a big prob-lem with suicide in Ireland,”says Smyth. “National figuresdemonstrate the breadth ofthose dying each year by sui-cide, yet we still have not de-veloped an effective strategy todeal with it.

“90% per cent of the serv-ices required to deal with sui-cide aren’t there. We areconscious that many of the Irishelectorate are currently experi-encing tough economic hard-ship, the negative mentalhealth connotations of which

are being borne out in nearlyevery community in Ireland.

“We would urge everyoneto consider that improved sui-cide resources and the forma-tion of a Suicide PreventionAuthority should be a comple-mentary factor in any electioncandidate’s political manifesto;in addition to improved eco-nomics, and should not be anissue of ‘either/or’ as it cur-rently stands.”

Suicide is the biggest killerof young people in Ireland anda recent study demonstratesthat the suicide rate amongteenage girls is higher in Irelandthan any EU state. The rateamong young Irish men is thesecond highest.

Currently, three times morepeople die by suicide than dieon Irish roads, yet funding forroad safety is currently 10 timesgreater than that of suicide.

In addition to writing toevery candidate presenting forlocal election and asking themto demonstrate their support forimproved suicide resources andthe formation of a Suicide Pre-vention Authority, 3Ts is urgingvoters to ask the following

questions of canvassing politi-cians.

• Ask if they are aware oflocal suicide statistics

• Ask if they are aware ofthe local supports that exist foran individual or family in theevent of a suicidal crisis

• Ask about their intendedpolicy for suicide preventiononce elected

The charity is also urgingboth the electorate and theelectoral candidates to engagein the submission process of thenew National Suicide Preven-tion Strategy (2015-2018)which is currently at the plan-ning stage.

3Ts are contributors to theplanning process, which isunder the auspices of the De-partment of Health and the Na-tional Office for SuicidePrevention.

As submissions are invitedfrom the general public and in-terested parties, 3Ts believesthat it is vital that this opportu-nity is taken to help inform fu-ture suicide prevention policy.

Brady.

Send your photos to [email protected]

After your dog comes to you make him sit calmly be-fore putting on the lead or slipping on the collar. We donot recommend retractable leads for walking, as theygive the handler less control.

The way you leave your house and property is alsoimportant. Your dog must go out the door after you. Ifyou put the leash on your dog and leave the house whileyour dog is excited and leading you, then you are settingthe mood for the rest of the walk to be in an excitedstate.

Take your dog to the front door and open it. Makeyour dog sit quietly; do not allow your dog to bolt outthe door. Your dog needs to see you are the one who de-cides when it’s time to leave.

As soon as your dog is sitting quietly at the exit it'stime to leave. Be sure you exit the house before yourdog, even if it’s just one step before your dog.

If your dog starts getting too excited and you're notkeeping him beside or behind you, stop and make yourdog sit. Wait until he is calm, and then start again.

Do not call to your dog when you start walking again, just start walking. Pack leaders do not call the pack tocome with them, the pack instinctually follows.

Your dog needs to learn he is following you, and tuneinto you, the person walking the dog. Do not praise yourdog for walking calmly. This only creates excitement andyou are more likely to pull your dog out of his calm, sub-missive state

Your dog should not sniff the ground and relieve him-self where he pleases for the sake of marking; his jobwhile walking is to concentrate on following his handler.

When walkingyour dog you canallow him to tip youoff of when he has togo to the bathroomand allow him to go ifthe spot is an accept-able place for a dog torelieve itself.

The thing you need to watch for and use your judge-ment is whether or not your dog is relieving himself be-cause he has to go to the toilet or if he is simply tryingto mark the area.

It is ok if your dog tells you he has to go to the bath-room and to allow him to go, but it is not acceptable toallow your dog to mark its scent all over for the sake ofmarking on the walk.

PRESSUREIf you pass a barking dog or other distraction, keep

moving forward. If your dog averts its attention to thedistraction, give a gentle tug on the lead to get attentionback to the walk.

If your dog is pulling, stop and make him sit. Correctany excited behaviour from the distraction by applyinggentle pressure on the lead. Do this as soon as you seeyour dog starting to avert his gaze toward the distraction,or as soon as you see a look in your dog's eyes that tellsyou he is going to begin barking or growling.

Timing is everything. This must be done right beforethe behaviour happens or at the exact moment it starts. You do not want to wait until it escalates.

If you wait too long before correcting your dog (we’retalking seconds), your dog may not even hear you; hewill be too focused on the distraction.

Walk at a good pace, keeping your shoulders backand your head held high. Dogs can sense tension or lack

The Woof Guide to Dog TrainingWith Dublin North Dog Training Club

Time for walkies!of confidence. Walk proud, like you are a strong leader.Your dog will sense this and respond to it.

Dogs, of all breeds and types, that are taken for dailywalks, and that are made to walk beside or behind theirowner, are less likely to be destructive, obsessive, haveseparation anxiety or dominancy issues, among manyother behaviour problems.

Dogs with higher energy levles should be taken forlonger, more vigorous walks, some two or more times aday. For a dog, walking is a primal instinct. Fulfilling thisneed in your dog will make for a happier dog and hap-pier owners.

While out on a walk sometimes owners attempt toteach their dog not to react to other dogs by completelystopping and trapping their dogs in a corner.

Some owners continuously put food in front of theirdogs telling them to stay, others use corrections to telltheir dogs to stay. What these owners are doing is teach-ing their dogs that passing another dog is a big event.

What you should be doing is teaching your dog thatpassing another dog is no big deal and to keep on walk-ing. Whether you like to use food as a distraction or not,be sure to keep moving.

Stopping and making a big deal out of the other dogcreates anticipation. It is teaching the dog that other dogsare indeed something to be concerned about. When youcontinue to walk you help your dog's mind move ontoother things.• DUBLIN NORTH DOG TRAINING CLUB is affiliated to theIrish Kennel Club. EU road law to save lives on Irish roadsA NEW EU directive strengthening the cross-border en-forcement of road traffic legislation will save livesand reduce injuries on the whole island of Ireland, itwas claimed this week.

The law, which ensures thatmotorists face fines and otherpenalties for breaking trafficlaws when driving in anothercountry, has already been in

place across the EU since last

year. But until now, it has not

been enforced in Ireland or the

UK.

Since it was incorrectly

billed as a “police cooperation”measure rather than a “roadsafety” measure, the Irish andBritish governments were notobliged to opt in and failed todo so.

However last week, the Eu-ropean Court of Justice decidedto replace the existing directivewith new legislation billed as a

road safety measure under theEU treaties, meaning that allcountries are automaticallyobliged to sign up.

The new law, due to takeeffect in a year’s time, willallow for the mutual recogni-tion of penalty points in allmember states. It will meanauthorities across the EU canexchange information on driv-

ers concerning eight majorroad traffic offences includingspeeding, drink-driving, using amobile phone while driving ornot wearing a seat belt.

Commenting on the ECJ rul-ing, Dublin MEP, Emer Costello, said the revamped laws willmean dangerous drivers will bepursued and sanctioned nomatter where they live.

“Authorities in the Republicand in Northern Ireland havespent years trying to achievethe mutual recognition ofpenalty points on the island, with little success,” she said.

“This new EU directive pro-vides an EU-wide framework toresolve the issue for once andfor all.”

EU research shows that

drivers are three times morelikely to commit an offenceabroad than in their own coun-try, and that drivers licensed inother member states accountfor up to a quarter of road traf-fic offences in border areas.

Ireland was one of only twoEU member states to report anincrease in road deaths lastyear.

■ A total of190 people were killed on Irish roads last year, a rise of 19 per cent on theprevious year.

Rebel Dublin MEPstands up to the SheriffSOCIALIST MEP Paul Murphy has vowed to continue boy-cotting the household and property taxes despite whathe described as “threatening letters” from Revenue.

The letters have de-manded payment of overe1,100 in taxes and fees andwarn Mr Murphy that if hedoes not fork up, they will con-fiscate goods from his office tothe same value.

The unanswered corre-spondence was followed upthis week by a visit to Mr Mur-phy's office from a representa-tive of the Sheriff of Dublin’soffice.

Responding to the Sheriff’s

visit, Mr Murphy questionedthe timing of the episode.

“Strangely, despite the taxbeing due for a whole periodof time, they have chosennow, in the middle of an elec-tion campaign, to begin ha-rassing me,” he said.

‘What do they plan totake? Computers from the of-fice, our printer, desks? Is thisbeing done to disrupt the elec-tion campaign?”

A number of other politi-

cians, including TDs who haverefused to pay the householdcharge and property tax onprinciple, have had the moniesdeducted from their salaries.

But Mr Murphy pointed outthat as he is paid by the Euro-pean Parliament, Revenue hasbeen unable to tamper withhis wages.

Mr Murphy has repeatedhis intention not to engagewith the Sheriff’s office in anyway. He said he will continueto refuse to pay the propertytax, in solidarity with the thou-sands of people who opposeit.

Childers wants Government to support bankers’ levyTHE Government’s decision not to oppose aEuropean tax on financial transactions hasbeen hailed by Irish MEPs as a welcome steptowards a more “socially progressive” Eu-rope.

It comes after Finance Minister, Michael Noo-nan, said Ireland would not join Britain and Swe-den in their planned legal challenge to theproposed European Financial Transaction Tax,known as FTT.

The UK has expressed fears that the tax couldhinder investment in the city of London.

Independent MEP, Marian Harkin, praised Min-ister Noonan for not opposing the historic tax, which will be the first enhanced cooperationagreement between member states on taxation.

She said the FTT, as proposed by Germany andFrance, provided the basis for developing a more“social Europe”.

“The fact that the FTT is to be used to combat

poverty and offset the adverse effects of climatechange is a very welcome development andhopefully indicative of a fresh policy develop-ment in the EU,” said Ms Harkin.

However fellow Independent MEP and Dublincandidate, Nessa Childers, urged Minister Noonanto go further by actively supporting the FTT, whichshe claimed could eventually benefit Ireland tothe tune of e500 million annually.

“We need this tax, which is an important steptowards achieving greater tax equality,” she said.

“Ireland has an awful lot to gain and weshould be assuming a much stronger line infavour of it. Financial institutions should pay theirown way.”

Ms Childers called on Minister Noonan to jointhe ten EU member states that plan to graduallystart imposing the tax on trading shares andsome derivatives from the beginning of 2016.

Q: I want to take my wife away asa surprise for our anniversary. Sheloves Italian food, history and cul-ture and has visited Rome andVenice.

Could you suggest somewherethat’s romantic and has lots tosee and do? A: If it’s romance you’re looking for, Iwould suggest Lake Garda in Italy. It’sone of the most beautiful areas in thecountry and there are plenty of activi-ties to make your holiday a memo-rable one.

Sirmione is the jewel in the crownof Lake Garda. Resting to the south ofthe lake atop a narrow peninsula, it’sone of the most loved lakeside resortsby Italians and tourists alike.

The fairytale-like ‘Rocca Scaligera’castle dominates the entrance to thetown and beyond the medieval battle-ment walls Sirmione stretches out intothe lake, bustling with activity fromthe narrow cobblestone streets.

The resort is easy to explore onfoot and there is lots to see and do.The natural thermal hot springs areideal for a romantic day or eveningtrip, as some of them open as late asmidnight.

The springs were discovered over400 years ago and have been used topipe hot water into Sirmione eversince. Alternatively, you can explorethe beaches and discover your ownnatural springs - they’re usually wherethe clusters of locals are gathered.

In terms of sightseeing, Sirmionehas its fair share of ancient ruins todiscover. The Grotte di Catullo is a stun-ning Roman ruin that sits right at thetip of the peninsula, so it’s worth pay-ing the €4 entrance fee if only for theviews of the expansive blue lake.

The romantic Rocca Scaligera datesback to the 13th century and is defi-nitely worth a visit.

I found the city as vibrant asever - with massive infrastructureprojects in progress all aroundtown. The cranes speckling thehorizon in every direction put anend to the idea of filming any-time soon - but the commotion isnot a problem for visitors.

If anything, seeing all thechanges in the works made meeager to come back soon to seethe Berlin of the future.

But even as the city busilybuilds itself into the 21st century,Berlin has made a point of ac-knowledging and rememberingits past. A series of thought-pro-voking memorials installedthroughout the city centre di-rectly confront some of Ger-many’s most difficult history ofthe last century.

Incorporating these sightsinto your Berlin sightseeing is away to learn from those difficulttimes.

Close to the iconic Branden-burg Gate is the Memorial to the

SHORT BREAKS WITH

Berlin Looks to the future, remembers its pastWHEN I visited Berlin recently to update my guidebook, Ialso scouted locations for a new TV show.

Murdered Jews of Europe, thefirst formal Holocaust memorialto be sponsored by the Germangovernment (in 2005).

Nearly 3,000 gravestone-likepillars, all roughly the same size

the plight and struggles of thisfragmented community who re-fuse to conform to modernnorms.

As you stroll through Berlin’sresidential neighbourhoods, youmight notice small bronzeplaques in the pavement. Theseare a different sort of memorial, called Stolpersteine – ‘stumblingblocks’. Meant to commemoratein a more personal way thosepersecuted by the Nazis, thestones are placed in front of thespot where victims resided.

Each stone begins with ‘Herelived’ - giving one name, re-membering just one person. Theinscription ends with the place -usually a concentration camp -and the date on which the indi-vidual died. So far, more than5,000 Stolpersteine are installedaround Berlin.

The most historic square inBerlin, Bebelplatz, has a glassplate set into the pavers at itsmiddle. Beneath it is a roomwith empty bookshelves. This isthe memorial to the notorious

Nazi book burning of 1933.It was here that staff and

students of Germany’s top uni-versity threw 20,000 newly for-bidden books (by writers such asEinstein, Hemingway, Freud, andTS Eliot) into a huge bonfire onthe orders of Nazi propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels.

The Prussian heritage ofFrederick the Great - who builtthis grand square - was one ofculture and enlightenment.Hitler chose this spot to thor-oughly squash any notions oftolerance and acceptance.

A century earlier, the Ger-man poet Heinrich Heine hadwritten, prophetically, “Wherethey burn books, in the end theywill also burn people.”

Crowned by the Branden-burg Gate, the ultimate addressin Berlin is the square calledPariser Platz. Within 100 yardsyou have the ultra-high-securityAmerican Embassy, a big Star-bucks, the hotel balcony whereMichael Jackson dangled hisbaby, and the glass dome cap-

ping the Reichstag roof, fromwhere Russian troops quelled afurious Nazi last stand in May1945.

Crossing Pariser Platz, I foundit hard to avoid a burst of sad-ness, thinking of the horror andviolence that has visited thisplace. But I was jolted out of mydark cloud by strains of livelymusic.

A group of string musicianshad set up here, on ground thatwas once a nightmarish no-man’s-land. As I listen to themplay with deep passion and joy,I reminded myself to embracethe world constructively andpositively, remembering howmuch is not wrong. In so manyways, a visit to Berlin can be aninspirational reminder to neverforget.

NEW research has found that regular exercise reducesdepression in older people, whether patients report pain ornot.

The all-Ireland study led by Dr Frank Doyle, Royal College ofSurgeons in Ireland (RCSI), examined the links betweenphysical activity, pain and depressive symptoms across threedatasets.

The study found that pain is associated with increaseddepression and physical activity is associated with lowerdepression levels.

It also found that having pain does not stop peoplebenefitting from physical activity.

Overall the findings suggest that health professionals canconsider and promote physical activity for the treatment ofdepressive symptoms and mental wellbeing, irrespective ofpain levels.

The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland(CARDI) funded the research as part of a series of projectsdesigned to examine key issues affecting older people by usingofficial data sources.

The key findings were:•Pain is associated with increased risk for depressive

symptoms in older people and is also a potential reason fornon-engagement in physical activity (Mossey et al., 2000).

•In the Republic of Ireland, 33 per cent of adults over 50engage in none or only low levels of physical activity (TILDA,2011).

•In Northern Ireland, 55 per cent engage in low or no levelsof physical activity (DHSSPS, 2011).

•In the Republic of Ireland, three quarters of older adultsreported none or only mild pain in the past week compared to45 per cent of older adults in Northern Ireland.

•Severe pain or discomfort was reported by 9 per cent ofRepublic of Ireland older adults and 11 per cent of NorthernIreland older adults (TILDA, 2011) (DHSSPS, 2011).

Dr Frank Doyle said that while it has been known for sometime that physical activity protects against depressivesymptoms, and that pain increases depressive symptoms, itwas unknown how these variables interacted with each other.

“We found that pain did not mediate the protectiveassociation between physical activity and depression,” he said.

“The findings suggest that clinicians should considerrecommending increased physical activity in older people, irrespective of pain levels.”

This year World MS Day launches with aglobal ‘One Day Wish’ campaign to raiseawareness of the most common disablingneurological condition in Ireland, affectingover 8,000 young people nationwide.

MS is usually diagnosed between theages of 20 and 40 and there is no knowncause or cure for MS.

For the month of May, as many people aspossible are urged to share a ‘One Day Wish’at www.ms-society.ie or with the hashtag#OneDayMS and spread the positive messagefor a hopeful future. The idea is to encouragepeople, both with MS and without, to thinkabout barriers to access in their life and makea wish for a world without those barriers.

MS Ireland is also inviting people to sharetheir personal One Day Wish on GraftonStreet on May 28. A One Day Wish Wall willthen reveal the wishes of people from all

over the world to mark World MS Day 2014.World MS Day 2014 events will take place

across the country organised by MS Ireland’sregional and local teams, with all eventslisted on www.ms-society.ie. Funds raisedwill directly support physiotherapy andsymptom management services, operation ofthe MS Information Line and crucial one-to-one support and newly diagnosed sessions.

Ava Battles, chief executive of MS Ireland, said: “World MS Day is an important timeevery year when we join with the globalcommunity to raise awareness of multiplesclerosis and the issues faced by people withMS all over the world.

“This year, our campaign will highlightissues facing Irish people with MS such asaccess to services, treatments and benefitsand entitlements while the One Day Wishelement will see everyone joining togetherto share messages of hope and aspirationsfor the future.”

THE Irish Cancer Society is marking NationalVolunteering Week (May 12–18) byextending a huge thank you to itsvolunteers in Dublin who have donatedtheir time to support the Society and helpcancer patients.

Volunteers in Dublin, who work across theSociety’s cancer services and fundraisinginitiatives, have a vital role in the Society’sprovision of free cancer information andsupport services nationwide.

Cancer is a growing concern in Ireland withone in three people now developing cancerduring their lifetime.

Latest figures show that 34,798 peoplewere diagnosed with cancer in Ireland in 2011with up to 35,000 new cases of cancerexpected to be diagnosed across the countrythis year.

The support of the public and the Society’sloyal volunteers means the Irish Cancer Societycan provide daily care and support to thethousands of people who are affected bycancer.

Receiving less than five per cent of incomefrom Government funding, the Irish CancerSociety relies on public support throughdonations and volunteering to deliver vitalservices.

John McCormack, chief executive of the IrishCancer Society, said they were greatlyappreciative of the tireless work of itsvolunteers in Dublin and across the countrywho selflessly give their time and expertise to

helping the Society to provide support forcancer patients.

“Volunteers who work with the Society doso across a wide range of services andfundraising campaigns,” said Mr McCormack.

“They work in the Society’s Daffodil Centresproviding information and care to cancerpatients in hospitals, they help deliver theCare to Drive service by driving patients to andfrom chemotherapy treatment and they areout in communities educating the publicaround reducing their risk of cancer.

“Our volunteers are also raising vital fundsby working in Irish Cancer Society shops andfundraising through initiatives such as DaffodilDay and Relay For Life so that the Society cancontinue to provide free cancer services andfund world-class cancer research.”

Mr McCormack said many of their servicesdepend on volunteers.

“These people deserve the deepestgratitude of the Irish Cancer Society and widersociety,” he added. “This National VolunteeringWeek, we want to say to them that they aremaking a difference and we wish to expressour appreciation to them.”

First impressions of the Citroen Faubourg AddictWhen I first laid eyes on new version

of the Citroen DS3, the cute CitroenFaubourg Addict, I thought to myself, twodoors, I’m not going to like this and no-body at home is going to like it either.

However, it does grow on you, but notenough for me to ever buy a two-doorcar. I’m convinced cars get lonely in shop-ping centres and last week as I carefullyopened my door making sure not toscrape the car parked right next to me Igot talking to a fellow motorist abouttwo-door cars. He said that a few yearsback his wife insisted on visiting her sistershortly after they picked up their newtwo-door car. It was a windy day andwhen his wife opened her door it almostswung off its hinges and damaged theside of his new car. I’d say the mood was-n’t great on the way home that day!

There is no doubt you have to be verycareful when opening the doors in two-door cars and unless you are really carefulyou are certain to scrape the car next toyou when opening the driver’s or passen-ger’s door.

A few years back Citroen brought backthe iconic DS nameplate, which was usedfrom 1955 to 1976. However, the newrange of cars bear no resemblance to theolder cars and share none of their engi-neering quirks. DS is pronounced Déesse, which is French for Goddess.

With the rear-tinted windows the firstimpression I got was that it was a smallvan. But the test car came in a very at-tractive ‘whisper-purple,’ and diamondeffect alloys, which were really attractive. You also get the DS logo all over the roof, which is very impressive and the logo isalso laser engraved on the side mirrors.

This is a very lively supermini andthere is plenty power in the 1.6 diesel en-gine. On the road it very lively and thereis no problem cornering at reasonably fastspeeds. The front seats are really com-fortable and there is room in the back forthree people, but headroom for the back-seat passengers is not great. With thetinted back windows you could probablyhide a small celebrity in the back

The boot is a decent size, but sadly nospare wheel. At the back the sporty effectis continued with double chrome exhaustpipe. There is also stop-start technology.

Yes, it does grow on you, but there isa price to pay for all that styling, €24,145to be exact. Low emissions mean road taxis only €180 and fuel consumption is low.

So if you have a few euros to spareand would like to sample French styletake a test drive. You are certain to getplenty of attention from fellow motorists, but be careful when opening those doorsin tight spaces.

Seán Creedon

IT’S certainly true that first impressions are lasting, but it’s also claimedthat with time some things can grow on you.

DO you know where your used car, truck, busand bicycle tyres go after they come off your ve-hicle?

TRACS (Tyre Recovery Activity Compliance Scheme)Ireland’s largest tyre compliance scheme, is asking ve-hicle owners to deal only with reputable tyre supplierswho will ensure that their used tyres are being properlyrecovered once they become waste.

Over 55,000 tonnes of tyre waste is estimated to begenerated in Ireland each year.

In 2012, approximately three million tyres, mostlycar tyres, were imported into Ireland for supply, ofwhich TRACS accounted for 75 per cent.

Furthermore, TRACS also accounted for nine in every10 waste tyres collected and treated either in this Ire-land or abroad.

TRACS is a voluntary Irish tyre industry initiative tomonitor all tyres on the Irish market and is approvedby the Minister for the Environment, Community andLocal Government.

The TRACS database system traces tyres from whenthey are imported to when they are sold, right thoughto when they are discarded, reused or processed for re-covery. Anyone who is involved in tyre retail, whole-sale, importation or recycling in Ireland has to be

registered by law with a compliance scheme such asTRACS.

TRACS members only give waste tyres to approvedcollectors and recognise that that they still have a re-sponsibility for their management, even after it is re-moved by the waste collector. This is great news for theultimate goal of properly managing tyre waste in Ire-land.

People can identify compliant tyre suppliers by look-ing for a ‘TRACS’ or ‘TRACS Compliant’ logo which shouldbe visible at their place of business.

According to Fiacra Quinn, Director of TRACS: “Weare encouraging the public to only deal with registeredsuppliers and waste collectors.”

Any authorised collector should be able to produceproof of proper waste management such as a ‘RecoveryCertificate’ when asked. This document ensures thattyre waste is being appropriately handled. We wouldencourage the public to actively ensure that their tyresuppliers are managing tyre waste properly and areregistered with a compliance scheme such as TRACS.”

Make sure that you choose a TRACS dealer, the nexttime that you need to change your car tyres. A full listof importers, manufacturers, retailers and waste collec-tors who have registered with TRACS is available on theTRACS website. www.tracs.ie

Sherry Suhrab and TaraMcHale, both 16-year-oldTransition Year students atColáiste Bride, reached thefinals of the competition withtheir business ‘Cake Bites’which produces uniquelollipop-style cakes.

“Both of us have a specialinterest in baking, particularlycakes, yet we wanted to sellsomething that was differentfrom common bake sales, sowe came up with the idea ofcake bites,” said Sherry.

From their market research, the students found that theirproduct was not that readilyavailable to the Irish market, giving them quite a niche.

“We discovered that ourproduct would become verypopular and unique, especially among thestudents in our school who
