Following a lengthy review of local mental health day-care fa-cilities, the five-day Tus Nua serv-ice in Ballymun officially closed last December and a three-day programme was put in its place as an interim measure.

However, this will now be discontinued and replaced by what the HSE describe as a new “evidence based” service model known as the Recovery Hub.

The PNA believe the move is counter to the objectives of the Government’s mental health strategy to provide accessible services for people with mental

illness. “The Ballymun centre is one of

three, including Drumcondra and Clontarf, which the HSE is clos-ing and centralising services at the day centre in North Circular Road,” said PNA General Secre-tary Designate, Peter Hughes. “This will require two bus jour-neys for clients in Ballymun to get to the new service and while the HSE say they will provide transport by minibus, they have given no guarantee that this transport will be available in the long-term.

“Easy access is vital to ensure the 19 clients currently attend-ing Ballymun continue to use the

mental health services.”The PNA believes the closure

of Tus Nua will undermine men-tal health services in Ballymun, which it says are already well below those recommended for a population of its size.

“While the PNA recognises the need to move from the present facility, there is ample alterna-tive accommodation in Ballymun in which to carry on the work of Tus Nua,” Hughes continued.

“This move flies in the face of the ‘Vision for Change‘ mental health strategy. The PNA is call-ing on the HSE to defer the clo-sure of Tus Nua until the services it currently operates can be relo-cated to alternative accommoda-tion within the Ballymun area.”

Chair of Dublin North East Health Services Committee, Cllr Noeleen Reilly (SF), said she was “deeply saddened” by the HSE decision.

“It’s very bad news for Bally-mun,” she stated.

“I don’t believe that many of the people using the current service will travel to the new service. They will now have to get two buses; it’s just not going

to happen. The writing was on the wall last November when the HSE said they were going to pull the service from the area. They rowed back slightly on this but unfortunately no long-term com-mitments were given. There was uproar in the community at the time and I know this decision will leave people very disappointed and angry.”

The HSE believes its new Re-covery Hub service model is in line with the Government’s Vision For Change mental health strat-egy and is better suited to meet the needs of clients.

“The latest research states that enabling recovery requires all concerned to move away from the traditional and exclusive fo-cus of treating illness, moving towards promoting wellbeing and connectedness in the com-munity,” a spokesperson said.

The HSE says research also shows that day care clients can become reliant on service pro-grammes to meet their social, oc-cupational and friendship needs, which can hamper recovery.

“We are now moving from a situation where service users were provided with a menu of options to one where they are di-recting the design and provision of services based on individu-alised need,” the spokesperson continued.

The HSE said the interim serv-ice that replaced Tus Nua last December was designed to focus on connecting clients with mean-ingful resources and activities within the community that would promote social inclusion.

“Service users who are identi-fied as requiring access to men-tal health day services will have the Recovery Hub to meet their needs,” the spokesperson added. “The social drop-in group, which is held in Ballymun Mental Health Services, Civic Offices, will con-tinue.”

This will require two bus journeys

for clients in Ballymun to get to the new service and while the HSE say they will provide transport by minibus, they have given no guarantee that this transport will be available in the long-term.

The rescued dogs huddle together for comfort▪

Local charity helps with rescue of dogsJack Gleeson

FINGLAS based dog welfare charity, Dogs Trust, has taken in 17 vulnerable and frightened terrier dogs rescued from an animal hoarder in Louth earlier this month.

The local charity revealed that it helped officials from Louth County Council to rescue the dogs who are now being cared for at the Dogs Trust centre just off the M50.

The 13 adult dogs and four pups are receiving veterinary and behavioural care from the Dogs Trust team. A number of the rescued dogs were pregnant and one frightened female has since delivered a litter at the Dogs Trust dedicated puppy wing facility.

“Unfortunately they are in a very distressed way following the horrific living conditions they were subjected to before the dis-covery,” said Operations Manager at Dogs Trust, Catriona Birt.

“These dogs are probably some of the most frightened we have ever taken in here at our Re-homing Centre.

“They are huddled together in the corner of their kennels and completely terrified of any posi-tive human interaction.

“It’s going to take quite some time and expert care to build their confidence and trust before rehoming them to loving new homes.”

Dogs Trust say the rescue is similar to many it encounters ev-ery year and that these dogs are typical of a hoarding case.

Gardaí promise action on Santry burglaries

Latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show a surge of almost 14 per cent in burglaries reported to Santry Gardai since the start of the year.

And locals believe the situation is getting worse.

Local Councillor Noeleen Reilly (SF) expressed concern at the rise in burglaries, especially in the Lorcan and Magenta areas.

“I have received numerous re-ports from residents about bur-glaries in the area,” she said.

“This was also one of the main items on the agenda at the recent Lorcan Residents’ Association meeting where the Gardaí made a presentation to residents on keeping their homes safer.

“The estate itself is very settled and would be home to quite a few older citizens.”

Cllr Reilly believes the closure

of Whitehall Garda Station and cutbacks at Santry Garda Station has put a huge strain on policing resources in the area.

“We do not have enough Gardaí in the Santry, Whitehall and Bal-lymun area,” she added.

In response to a query from Cllr Reilly Chief Superintendent at Ballymun Garda Station, Finbarr O’Brien, outlined measures aimed at tacking the rise in burglaries.

“Gardaí in Santry are aware of a number of burglaries in the Lor-can area and have deployed and will continue to deploy additional plain clothes and uniform patrols in that area,” he said.

“As the evenings close in there will be a noticeable increase in Garda presence in that area as I will be recommencing high profile anti-Burglary patrols that proved very effective last year.”

Dublin Book Festival teams up with BelfastTHE Dublin: One City One Book Festival will team up with Bel-fast for 2016 the city’s Public Library Service has revealed.

The team-up between the is-land’s two capitals will mean next year’s event will be a Two Cities One Book Festival.

The book chosen for 2016 is Lia Mills’ novel, Fallen, which tells the story of Dubliners against the backdrop of the dramatic events of Easter Week, 1916.

The book is a literary contribu-tion to Dublin City Council’s 1916 centenary programme.

The new initiative was launched by Minister for Arts,, Heather Humphreys, and Dublin Lord Mayor, Críona Ní Dhálaigh.

“I am delighted that as part of Dublin City Council’s 1916 commemorations, the festival is joining with Belfast city through Libraries NI to celebrate the won-derful novel Fallen by Lia Mills,” the Lord Mayor said.

“As a fellow Dubliner, I want to congratulate Lia on this, her third novel, and wish her every success with it.”

Who decides what constitutes ‘reasonable chastisement’? PIC POSED

Children deserve full protection of the law

THERE was a time when a child slapping ban would have led to accusations of Ireland becoming a nanny state.

“Sure it never did me any harm,” is a common response when the issue is raised. “Nothing like a harmless smack to put manners on a bold child.”

For my generation, it was funny – and normal – to see Dennis the Menace’s father beat him with a slipper in The Beano comic. It was cartoon violence but violence nonetheless.

I can still recall a time when teachers dished out physical punishment on a whim, some with more restraint than others.

Eventually it was no longer okay for children to be physically chastised in

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

society, value children and that they must be treated equally before the law”.

A statement from both groups said: “You cannot hit an adult in Ireland. The law should be no different for children. To date, 46 countries in the world have prohibited the corporal punishment of children, including 19 countries in the EU. It is long overdue that Ireland joins

them.”Grainia Long, ISPCC chief executive,

commented: “We know from engaging with children on a daily basis through our Childline service that physical abuse is a pervasive and ongoing issue in the lives of some.

“By allowing this defence to continue, society was saying that it is okay to harm a child. This amendment

to legislation is a statement of intent and we welcome it wholeheartedly.”

Given the harrowing cases of cruelty to minors encountered by these groups, it is hard not to be swayed by the argument that any physical chastisement is fundamentally wrong and our children are most deserving of the full protection of the laws of the State.

school, yet parents had carte blanche when it came to disciplining their own kids. Thanks to decades of work and campaigning by children’s advocacy groups, we now realise that many fathers and mothers seriously overstepped the mark when administering corporal punishment at home.

That’s why we have to take at face value the positive reaction of such organisations to Ireland’s latest step towards an outright slapping ban.

Last week, both the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) and the Children’s Rights Alliance warmly welcomed an amendment to the Children First Bill 2014 which will see the removal of the defence of reasonable chastisement from the common law.

This change means that if a parent or carer is charged with assault or child cruelty, they won’t be able to claim in defence that they were only inflicting ‘reasonable chastisement’ in disciplining their child.

Both children’s organisations have long campaigned to see the removal of this defence to ensure that children have equal protection and rights under the law. They said it sent a strong message, echoing the result of the 2012 Children’s Referendum that “we, as a

Frightening Halloween clean up bill

emergency callouts were down on previous years and this can be attributed in no small measure to the excellent work by city council staff and the gardai.

“The co-ordinated efforts in removal of bonfire material in advance of Halloween, high pro-file awareness activities and the increasing number of organised events are particular elements of the action programme, which are working to very good effect.”

Dublin City Council is encour-aging the public to report any stockpiled material in the run up to Halloween through the Litter Hotline on 1800-251500 (Mon-day-Friday, 9am-5pm) or the En-vironmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 24-hour complaints Line at 1850-365121.

The city council confirmed to Northside People that last year the cost associated with the fes-tival period was approximately €650,000.

Dublin City Council said it re-moved approximately 750 tonnes of bonfire materials last year, and it estimated that in excess of 1,500 tyres were collected.

The city council is putting in place an extensive action plan for this year’s Halloween period where the main focus will be on promoting a safe and enjoyable Halloween for Dubliners.

Various events and festivals will be held across the city in-cluding Otherworld in Ballymun,

which attracts hundreds of locals every year.

The council is also planning to minimise the impact of environ-mental and social consequences of bonfires and illegal fireworks through preventative actions and awareness raising activities.

A spokeswoman said the Hal-loween 2014 period passed off quite well with thousands of people enjoying the many local events organised.

“However, there were a small number of unsavoury individual incidents which were a source of distress for members of staff and public,” she said.

“The number of bonfires and

Plea to keep city air cleanTHE Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is asking house-holds and businesses in Dublin not to damage the air during their Halloween celebrations.

EPA Scientific Officer, Martin Doyle, has also warned that cel-ebrating Halloween should not be seen an opportunity to burn household waste on bonfires.

“Burning of household waste either in the open or in domes-tic fires is illegal and can emit highly toxic substances into the air, which can stay in the environ-ment for years,” he said.

“Many Dublin residents and lo-cal businesses may also not real-ise it is illegal to store or gather waste for bonfires. The stockpil-ing of waste could lead to a court appearance and hefty fines.

“Let’s celebrate Halloween by making sure everyone can enjoy the night of ghouls and ghosts by keeping Dublin air clean.”

Real-time air quality results for Dublin are available on the EPA website at www.airquality.epa.ie. Results are updated hourly.

Sinead’S Winning Streak SucceSS Ecstasy pills may contain hidden danger

breaking the silence and starting this conversation.”

The ‘What’s in the Pill?’ cam-paign was launched by Dublin Lord Mayor, Criona Ni Dhalaigh, who welcomed the initiative.

“I understand it’s the first time that universities and a drug serv-ice have worked together to de-velop drug-related resources for student populations,” she said.

“These resources give an im-portant message, with a prag-matic focus – that it is always saf-est not to use drugs at all, but if you do choose to do so, it is vital to have access to unbiased, evi-dence based information.”

Minister of State with Responsi-bility for the National Drugs Strat-egy, Aodhan O ‘Riordain, said the campaign was a great example of different stakeholders working together for a common goal.

“It’s great to see positive work like this, ” he added.

The ‘high’ from Ecstasy comes from MDMA but research across Europe has found that many pills also contain stimulants like PMA and PMMA, which can lead to coma and death in large doses.

The harm reduction campaign follows a number of deaths across Europe, including several in Ire-land, that are believed to be con-nected to the toxic stimulants.

The campaign is the result of a collaboration between three Dub-lin universities – DIT, TCD, and UCD - and the Ana Liffey Drug Project. Campaign resources include post-ers and a factsheet, which will be distributed on campus as well as promoted on social media and via the drugs.ie website.

“It’s not possible to tell what’s in a pill by sight, smell or taste,” said Director of the Ana Liffey Drug Project, Tony Duffin.

“While PMA and PMMA are widely known substances which are commonly found in what is sold as ecstasy, there are many others which are not so well known.”

Welfare Officer for DIT, Lysette Golden, said it was important not to be afraid to talk about drugs.

“The only way to make a dif-ference is to not be afraid to talk about the sensitive subjects,” she added. “Drugs are common and popular, we all know this, yet fail to talk about them openly. Through this campaign we are

DCU programme aims to solve our gobal problems

nors for a number of key projects including an Institute for Inter-national Conflict Resolution and Reconstruction.

The Institute will support peace-building in post-conflict regions by producing research on key areas of international concern such as online radicali-sation and women in conflict. It also aims to support policymak-ers and communities in address-ing tensions and legacy issues in Northern Ireland.

Another project on ageing will support health and activity in older people and focus on the management of chronic condi-tions such as diabetes, cancer and respiratory and cardiovas-

cular diseases.A DCU Water Institute is also

planned, which will develop and apply innovative approaches to global issues such as water qual-ity, flood prevention, access to safe drinking water and waste-water treatment.

Other projects include an In-stitute of Future Journalism and Media and an Institute of Educa-tion.

President of DCU, Professor Brian MacCraith, outlined the university’s strategic ambition in what’s being described as an “un-paralleled development plan”.

“DCU has a reputation as an innovative force within the most rapidly expanding region in the

country,” he said.“We are recognised for our

focus on innovation, matching our enterprising efforts to future trends in employment, industry, science and technology.

“This announcement signals DCU’s ambition to show leader-ship in this space, to radically scale our future development to meet the challenges of a world grappling with realities such as an ageing population, natural resources under threat, prepara-tion for the jobs of the future yet to be imagined, and an increas-ingly digitally connected global family where concepts of infor-mation, community and conflict transcend borders.”

Jack Gleeson

A NEW multi-million euro devel-opment programme launched last week at DCU has the poten-tial to deliver significant global impact in education, health and conflict resolution.

The hugely ambitious pro-gramme could help solve some of the world’s most difficult prob-lems such as online religious radi-calisation, water shortages and managing cancer.

The Northside university an-nounced the first €323 million funding step for the ambitious DCU/Shaping the Future pro-gramme last Wednesday (October 21) and internationally acclaimed futurist, Dr Peter Cochrane, out-lined its importance during a key-note address at the launch.

“It is heartening to see a young, ambitious university like DCU challenging the status quo and taking brave steps to create

new responses to the challenges of a rapidly changing world,” he said.

“Our world is no longer slow, disconnected and linear; it is fast, connected and highly non-linear. From the same starting condi-tions, our systems return wildly different results.

“We are talking ‘butterfly wings’ - where a small change can see a big outcome. This is true of technology, networks, economics and politics. The old ways and old thinking do not work, and they can be dangerous.”

DCU has already achieved 25 per cent of the campaign’s fund-raising target, and has attracted donations of €25 million over the last three years, during what it describes as the ‘quiet’ phase of the campaign.

Some programme initiatives are already well into the planning stage including a new student centre that’s expected to com-mence construction next sum-

mer.Last week’s launch is the begin-

ning of a €100 million fundraising drive and it’ll be followed by a series of significant announce-ments before the end of the year on major capital investments.

The Shaping the Future pro-gramme aims to future-proof the university’s graduates and align DCU’s research objectives with modern, global challenges.

The university is now actively seeking philanthropic support from private and corporate do-

In order to ‘Walk the World’

Centra needed 8,000 people to walk 5km each and the locals in Glasnevin played their part in helping reach the target.

The Gaskin’s Centra walk was started by Cllr Paul McAuliffe (FF) and those who took part includ-ed: Sarah Lynch; Beth Corcoran;

Angela Cahill; Sandra Moran; Ruth Ryan; Iwona Szopinska; Debbie McLachlin; Karl Lynch and Nancy Lynch.

“It was a great success and we raised a substantial amount of money for the charity,” said Gaskin’s Centra manager, May Gaskin.

Breast Cancer is the most com-mon cancer in Irish women, and it affects over 2,800 every year.

All funds raised by Centra during Breast Cancer Awareness month goes directly to fund essential services including information, advice and support services for women throughout the coun-try who have been affected by breast cancer.

Locals can still support the cause by purchasing a pink hi-viz jacket at Gaskin’s Centra, St Pappin’s Road, Glasnevin.

Dates announced for Irish premiere of famous musicalIT has been announced that ‘Billy Elliot the Musical’ will play Bord Gais Energy Theatre from Tuesday July 26 to Saturday, September 3 in the Bord Gais En-ergy Theatre.

Producer Eric Fellner said: “Hav-ing recently celebrated 10 extraor-dinary years of Billy Elliot the Musi-cal in London, we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring a new touring production of this inspiring show to fans across the UK and Ire-land and the chance to delight new audiences along the way.”

Based on the highly successful film, the show is set in a northern mining town against the back-

ground of the 1984/85 miners’ strike and follows Billy’s journey from boxing to ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that

inspires his family and whole com-munity and changes his life forever. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Billy Elliot the Musical has now been seen by over 10.5 million people across five continents and is the recipient of over 80 awards internationally, including 10 Tony Awards and five Olivier Awards.

In 2006, Liam Mower, James Lo-mas and George Maguire, the first three boys to play the title role, became the youngest performers ever to have won the Olivier Award for Best Actor with the show also picking up the Best Musical prize. In total, 89 boys have now played the iconic title role on stages world-wide.

The first Dutch production of Bil-ly Elliot the Musical continues at the AFAS Circustheater in The Hague. Productions have previously been staged on Broadway, in Sydney, Melbourne, Chicago, Toronto and Seoul, South Korea.

The North American touring production, which began in 2010, finished its spectacular run in Au-gust 2013 with an engagement in São Paulo, Brazil, the first time Billy Elliot played in South America. Fur-ther international productions are planned including the first Japa-nese production in 2017. Billy Elliot the Musical is currently booking at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London until December 17, 2016.

Bernie, who had struggled with her weight from early childhood, is now sharing her weight loss se-cret to her group members.

“When you have been over-weight for so long, you just feel nothing will ever change but a comment about my size was the last straw and I decided that this time I was going to change, and that change was going to be Slim-ming World.

Annual flu warning issuedTHE HSE is urging people in at-risk groups to get vaccinated against influenza and warned that flu causes severe illness and death in Ireland every year.

The HSE provides the flu vac-cine free of charge those in at-risk groups. The following groups of at-risk people should be vacci-nated against seasonal influenza:

•Everyone aged 65 years and over

•Anyone over six months of age with a long term illness requiring regular medical follow-up such as chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, diabetes or those with lower immunity due to dis-ease or treatment

•Pregnant women•Residents of nursing homes

and other long stay facilities•Healthcare workersHead of the HSE’s National Im-

munisation Office, Dr Brenda Cor-coran, said the flu vaccine is the only defence against flu.

“Yet every year many people in the at-risk groups fail to get vac-cinated and so put themselves at risk of serious illness or even death,” said Dr Corcoran.

“The vaccine reduces infection and associated illnesses and hos-pitalisation.

“Flu is very infectious and can cause potentially serious illnesses especially for older people, those

who have a chronic illness, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women.

“Seasonal flu vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy and also protects the baby.”

Dr Corcoran added: “The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu as it does not contain any live flu virus and all those at risk should get vaccinated as soon as pos-sible this year to make sure that they are protected.”

Minister for Health Leo Var-adkar, who joined the call from the HSE, said: “The flu vaccine is a lifesaver because flu can be a very serious and sometimes deadly disease, with potentially

“That is why those who are most vulnerable to the compli-cations of flu need to get vacci-nated.

“This year, again, I would like to remind all health care profes-sionals of their duty to protect themselves and their patients by getting immunised.

CHILDREN can often see dogs as teddy bears that want to be squeezed and cuddled. And if we are honest with ourselves, most adults have had the urge to do the same!

Some dogs may find the prospect of being squeezed or hugged, especially by people they are not familiar with, quite alarming and uncomfortable.

As a rule, it’s important to teach children to be really care-ful when approaching dogs they don’t know and only pat or play with a dog if they have asked the owner first.

Sometimes younger children can be unintentionally rough or try to play with dogs in a man-ner they are not accustomed to; such as moving quickly and closely to the dog, interrupting them while they are eating or even pulling their ears or tail.

This could potentially lead to a bite or nip, especially if the

dog has a painful medical condi-tion such as arthritis, a fear of a certain area being touched or is generally scared of children or strangers.

Even if you are not regularly in contact with small children,

teach your dog not to jump up or be too boisterous when meeting new people as this can lead to accidents and misinter-preted incidents.

Make sure to socialise your puppy properly with children

and teach him how to behave. Doing this will ensure you have a friendly adult dog that is safe to have around children and indeed adults.

It can be hard to work out what dogs feel or think some-

times, as they can’t tell us themselves. But their body lan-guage can help us understand them better.

Happy dogs generally have relaxed ears and a relaxed wagging tail (not high or stiffly wagging). Dogs that growl or bare their teeth want to be left alone and it is important not to approach a dog who is asking to be left alone in this manner.

Always keep calm and walk away slowly from a growling dog. Don’t run, keep your hands in your pockets or cross your

arms and try to avoid direct eye contact with the dog.

If your own dog is afraid, reassure them; stay calm, speak softly and move away from whatever is making them nervous.

The golden rule, as always, is never, ever leave children unat-tended around dogs. The risk for what may occur is too great for both parties.

Soakup the cultureGETTING off the beaten track and soaking up a completely different culture can transform a holiday into a truly life-changing experience.

With limited time on your hands and language restrictions, this can sometimes be a little tricky to do. It’s often easier to stick with the hordes of other tourists and tick the main sights off a list than take a chance on a random town or unusual attraction.

To help you venture into the unknown, Tropical Medical Bureau have compiled some top tips on how to live like a local overseas.

1Eat local food. Often the most memorable travelling experiences involve

exciting local cuisine. A good bet is to head where the locals eat and order a selection of dishes to share. If you have time, sign up for a traditional cooking class and learn how to use exotic herbs and spices.

2Use public transport. It may be easier to hop on a plane or catch a cab, but this means

that you’ll miss out on excellent people watching opportunities. Throw yourself into the hustle and bustle of everyday life in

Grace and style dominate in Croatia’s capital cityWe are planning a quick break in Croatia next month. What would you recommend?

Croatia is the perfect place to visit for a relaxing break, as its attractions are more timeless and cultural than trendy. Zagreb, the country’s capital, is

a must see city that can sometimes be overlooked by tourists making a beeline for the coast.

A fascinating destination, Zagreb is the political, economic and cultural capital of Croatia. The city buzzes with energy but has retained a good deal of its old world graciousness, combining the best of Eastern and Western Europe.

The Austro-Hungarian buildings in the town centre house elegant restaurants and fashionable boutiques along with boho-chic pubs and busy beer halls.

The historical parts of the town, known as Upper Town and Kaptol, are unique and culture rich. The streets and squares of the Old Town can be reached on foot but you also have the option of taking a cable railway to get around, known as the funicular.

The history, art and culture of the city can be seen by strolling around the large

travel

number of museums and galleries. One of the most famous is the Archaeological Museum, which houses an Egyptian collection, complete with the oldest Etruscan inscribed mummies in the world.

A part of the museum is also set aside for the collection of stone monuments dating back to the Roman period.

The Croatians have a love for all things art so you must visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is home to collections of modern trends in fine arts.

The oldest exhibition complex is the Art Pavilion, which hosts many

exhibitions throughout the year and the Modern Gallery houses fine art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

For someone looking for a little adventure and activity, make sure to visit Maksimir Park in the east of the city as it is a major destination for cyclists, strollers and joggers.

In the summer, city dwellers chill out at Jarun Lake where boat rides are on offer.

Zagreb has so many great restaurants to choose from, offering local and international specialties. Local products that deserve to be sampled include the turkey, duck or goose with mlinci (a kind of pasta), strukli (cottage-cheese strudel) and traditional nut-cake.

As Zagreb is by the coast, many restaurants also offer fresh seafood selections at great prices.

‘The Vorbing’ by Stewart Stafford“WHERE do vampires come from?” It is a question as old as recorded time. At last, you are looking at the answer. The Vorbing, the first novel in The Dubhtayl Saga, provides vampires with their own origin story this Halloween.

The savage NightLord Deadulus and his winged vampires have crushed the human forces at The Battle of McLintock’s Spit. They rule the night unchallenged and terrorise the remote village of Nocturne in the kingdom of Dubhtayl.

The setting sun means the imposition of a virtual curfew on Nocturnians. Soon after, the vampires come to lay siege to their village and begin a ruthless hunt for human or animal blood. Nocturne becomes a ghost town. Dawn temporarily lifts the siege until night falls again. Life is unbearable and short for Nocturnians and will only continue that way unless something changes.

The peasant boy Vlad Ingisbohr has had enough of the vampire’s murderous oppression. He decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and rise up against Deadulus and his vampires and overthrow them.

Vlad wants to free his people from their reign of terror and avenge his father’s death at their hands. His plan is not popular and is seen as futile and suicidal. Vlad faces fierce resistance from Nocturne’s council of elders and the people of Nocturne themselves.

They want to maintain the status quo and refuse to even contemplate a second bloodbath like McLintock’s Spit. They believe a massacre and the destruction of Nocturne would be the result of any

uprising. Vlad’s plan is dismissed as the arrogance of youth and a fool’s errand.

Vlad Ingisbohr is a man of action like his father Adam. He knows

that the biggest risk of all is to risk nothing. Vlad finds himself forced to take action on his own to find a solution to the vast vampire problem.

So begins an epic quest to confront the forces of

darkness which will push Vlad to the brink of death and beyond. It takes him from Nocturne to Dubhtayl’s capital city Mortis on a desperate mission to rally outsiders to his cause.

The vampires and their supernatural allies pursue Vlad relentlessly on the road to Mortis.

He is at the mercy of strangers and the elements. Shelter, food and sleep are scarce and frightening new threats present themselves at every turn. Vlad uncovers a shocking revelation on the origins of vampirism in a cave that reveals his real enemy to him for the first time. Vlad’s own fate is brought into sharper focus by another revelation simultaneously.

It instantly raises the stakes for the final war of annihilation on the slopes of Vampire Mountain. Will Vlad meet the same bloody end as his father? Is the revelation about his fate true? WiIl the bloodthirsty vengeance of the vampires be even more ruthless if they are victorious a second time? Read the new fantasy/horror novel The Vorbing and find out. Joe Duffy’s book remembers child victims of the 1916 Rising‘CHILDREN of the Rising’ is the first ever account of the young lives violently lost during the week of the 1916 Rising - long-for-gotten and never commemorated, until now.

Boys, girls, rich, poor, Catholic, Protestant – no child was guaranteed immunity from the bullet and bomb that week, in a city where teeming tenement life existed side by side with immense wealth.

Drawing on extensive original research, along with interviews with relatives, Joe Duffy creates a compelling picture of these 40 lives along with one of the cut and thrust of city life between the two canals a century ago.

This gripping story of Dublin and its people in 1916 will add immeasurably to our understanding of the Easter Rising. Above all, it honours the

forgotten lives, largely buried in unmarked graves, of those young people who once called Dublin their home.

Festival of teaching excellence at RdSALMOST 1,000 teachers and members of the public gathered earlier this month for a celebra-tion of innovation in teaching during the recent World Teach-ers’ Day 2015 at FÉILTE.

FÉILTE, (Festival of Education In Learning and Teaching Excellence) was hosted by the Teaching Council and took place in Dublin’s RDS.

The festival featured a mix of over 50 showcases and workshops

spanning projects from across the education sector, demonstrating the innovation happening in teach-ing and learning in schools across the country.

The event was attended by teachers and members of the pub-lic from across the country, includ-ing a number from Dublin.

St Lawrence O’Toole NS show-cased its Zoom Ahead project, which is an innovative way of en-couraging greater parental inclu-

sion in children’s education. As well as providing training

and support, the programme pro-vides parents with opportunities to share in their child’s learning through events and fun numeracy and literacy activities.

Speaking about the event, Teaching Council Director Tomás Ó Ruairc said: “As a teacher and parent, I understand and appreci-ate the incredible amount of trust placed in teachers.

“Having spoken to teachers around the country at a variety of events, I also appreciate the clear commitment and enthusiasm they show in leading learning in the most creative and innovative of ways.

“FÉILTE was an opportunity for all of us to celebrate and admire that creativity and innovation.”

FÉILTE began with an address by inspirational adventurist Mark Pol-lock. Psychologist, and author of Flourishing, Dr Maureen Gaffney, spoke to the audience too.

The day also featured three panel discussions covering the role of parents in their children’s education, the use of technology in education, and mindfulness in the classroom.

This Skoda is really Superb

For the driver and front seat passenger the controls on the dash are well arranged and so easy to use. The infotainment comes via a 7-inch screen, which dominates the dash. Journalists tend to get the top of the range cars, which to be fair, will always cost more than the entry level price. And of course one of the big selling points of the Superb is the massive boot, which Skoda say is bigger than the boot in a BMW or Mercedes. I don’t play golf but I know that you could easily fi t a few golf bags in there. The boot is so big I reckon you could emulate the ‘Trojan Horse’ e ect by hiding a few small people in there if re-quired.

And if you want to carry some-thing very long like a pole vault, there is gap in the back seat which folds down to allow access to the

At the Irish launch of the Su-perb earlier this summer Ray Led-dy, Skoda’s Marketing Manager in Ireland said that their aim now is to try and grab a bigger share of the fl eet market. Well not only is the revamped version up to ‘fl eet’ requirements, it’s so smooth and comfortable you could use it if you were in the limousine busi-ness.

Skoda is celebrating 120 years of car-marking this year. The Czech manufacturer has really improved since they came un-der the VW umbrella a few years

back, but now their cars will like all others diesels in the VW group, be due for a recall to sort out the emissions problems.

I drove a black version with cream seats and it was simply gorgeous. At the front there are new LED lights, which now come as standard. It’s so spacious and luxurious. The front seats are very easily adjusted by buttons on the side of the seats. In the back there is now even more leg room and the back seats passengers now have their own air condition-ing controls.

Seán Creedon

IF YOU give a car a name like ‘Superb’ then you have to ensure that it lives up to that moniker. Skoda has always done well in Ireland with their Superb and their revamped version, which I drove last week, certainly lives up to the hype that existed prior to launch.

boot And the really good news is that underneath that massive boot there is still room for a ‘mini’ spare wheel. I don’t know how car companies get away with provid-ing those dreaded repair kits.

Prices start at €27,795 for the Active 1.6 diesel version, but Ray Leddy says that they expect their big seller in Ireland to be their Ambition version, which will cost

you €30,259.Skoda always provided a dis-

creet holder for an umbrella in one of the doors. Now the manu-facturers must have heard about our damp summers as two um-brellas are now provided.

All my passengers were very happy last week as appreciated the comfort which the Superb of-fered. My only complaint was the

stop-start technology; it tended to cut too often in the fi rst few days of my test drive. But maybe my driving was too timid.

Yes the old saying is true, Su-perb by name, Superb by nature. Or as commentator Jimmy Magee famously said when describing Diego Maradona’s second goal against England in 1986 “di er-ent class.”

Kia Motors Irelandcompletes 2016 range

Kia’s European designers have evolved the interior and exte-rior styling of the current cee’d into an exciting new look, with the powertrain team develop-ing a wider range of engines and transmissions. The improvements include Kia’s all-new three-cylin-der 1.0-litre T-GDI engine, as well as a range of new safety, comfort and convenience upgrades. The changes apply to every model in the cee’d range, incorporating the fi ve-door cee’d hatchback, Sport-swagon and three-door pro_cee’d.

The upgraded model will come with a new ‘GT Line’ specifi cation, o ering buyers the sporty looks and dynamics of the GT models and the versatility of the conven-tional cee’d model family. The GT

Line specifi cation is available in Ireland on two of the three cee’d body types – fi ve door cee’d and three-door pro_cee’d.

“Competing in the highly com-petitive C segment cee’d is an extremely important part of our product mix ,second only to our best-selling Sportage model,” said James Brooks, Managing Di-rector of Kia Motors Ireland.

the car is one of the best in its segment. In fact the cee’d has emerged as the most reliable car in its class in this year’s JD Power Survey in the UK.”

The upgraded Kia cee’d inherits the bold, distinct styling of the current model, with a series of visual modifi cations to modernise the car’s appearance.

At the front, the cee’d contin-ues the look that has proven so popular with European buyers, retaining Kia’s hallmark ‘tiger-nose’ grille, sleek wraparound headlamps and integrated fog lamps.

A similar change has been made to the rear of the cee’d, with reshaped bumpers and sporty-looking refl ectors. LED rear lamps complete the rear of the car, adding a higher level of refi nement while updating the cee’d’s night-time light signature. Stylish new 16- and 17-inch alloy wheel designs are also now avail-able across the range. The Kia c’eed▪

Live in a haunted home this HALLOWEEN is just

days away and it’s our last chance to host a great theme

party before Christmas.

It’s easy to transform your house from Home Sweet Home to Home Scary Home with a few ghostly holiday ideas.

Halloween is all about atmo-sphere. Get the décor right and the required spooky mood will

follow.First, create an eerie ambi-

ence inside by dimming lights and putting up a few black or dark blue shades.

You can add some dark and creepy shadows by scattering candlestick holders and flicker-ing pumpkin lanterns through-out your hallways.

It wouldn’t be Halloween without a few ghosts and if your house isn’t haunted you can

create your own to hang from the ceiling or outside on tree branches.

Make small ghosts from four facial tissues. Lay one tissue down, unfold it into a square and place a second one over it diamond-wise.

Wad-up the remaining tissues for a head. Place the wad in the centre of the first two tissues and tie a string or bit of yarn around the neck.

Make big black eyes with a felt pen. Tie the ghosts to the branch or hang from the ceiling.

Big ghosts can be made from sheets. Use wadded up newspaper or as cheap a vinyl ball as you can find for a head. Place these in ceiling corners, suspending the head and tacking two ends of the sheet to op-posite walls, to make the ghost ‘fly’.

Now that you have started replacing the good with the bad, remember that nothing is scarier than a room full of vases with dead flowers drooping from the sides.

For even more of a ‘Dawn of the Dead’ feel, consider hiding plastic spiders and bugs in unex-pected places, like between seat cushions or under the bathroom soap. That’ll get your guests

jumping out of their skin.If you’re feeling really ghoul-

ish buy some liver and kidneys from the butchers and place them in jars of water. Just watch the face of your visitors when they come across the ‘body parts’.

For added Jeepers Creepers, think theatrically and splash a little fake spattered blood here and there. And if you want to keep an evil eye on all the partygoers, you might try painting scary red eyes on all the windows with special glow-in-the-dark paint.

OK, that’s a few of the visuals taken care of but what about sound effects? Take a kid’s bat-tery operated toy, wind it up, then let it bump around loudly

inside a hallway closet. As much as black and orange

are the traditional Halloween co-lours. Don’t be afraid to experi-ment with a variety of frightful autumn colours.

For instance, why does every pumpkin have to be orange? There’s noting scarier than a brown pumpkin with glowing eyes and teeth. Or you could give a pumpkin a Frankenstein look with grey face paint and fake stitches. Sort of a Pumpkin-stein monster.

OK, so the house is really spooked out at this stage but there are some seasonal deco-rating ideas that will last long after the Halloween.

Creating a wreath is one of

the more popular and easy craft-ing projects you can do this time of year. Wreaths can be round, square, or any shape you desire to complement your style.

Hung from a door or a wall or placed on a tabletop, wreaths are a wonderful way to add the elements of the season to your home.

Items that can be used to decorate a wreath are as limit-less as your imagination. They include silk or dried flowers, fruits, vegetables, berries, rib-bons and bows.

You can find everything you need to create a wreath at your local arts and crafts stores, which have a wide selection of decorative tools and embellish-

many websites now provide step-by-step instructions to help you create your very own wreath

Another easy way to set a seasonal mood in a room at this time of year is with a floral ar-rangement.

You can really let your imagination run wild when you create an autumn floral display. You can use pinecones, seasonal fruit, evergreen branches, dried flowers or even reeds to fill a vase, decorate a table or bright-en up a corner of the room.

Another popular and easy way to bring the look of autumn in-side is through ‘candlescaping’. Candlescaping is all about creat-

ing a mood or telling a story using texture, scent, colour and light with candles.

At its most basic, multiple candles can be displayed on a large plate and taken to the extreme you can fill an entire room with decorative candles of varying heights, sizes and shapes, filling the space with soft, warm light, creating a cosy environment for your family.

These days, candles come in every imaginable size, shape, colour and scent, allowing you to develop a look that fits your own personal style.

To create a more unique look with candles, some people use stencils and paint to decorate with seasonal motifs.

And they have a chance to win a free stand at the Bite 2015 if they manage to impress the organisers with a brief description of their services.

employmentBusiness survey results bodes well for economy

ACCORDING to the results of a new survey undertaken by Enterprise Ireland and De-loitte, 93 per cent of companies say they intend to expand their businesses over the next year.

The CEO Forum survey find-ings also revealed that 74 per cent of business leaders believe the Central Bank or Irish Govern-ment should not intervene to slow Ireland’s strong economic growth rate.

Currently, Ireland is expected to be the fastest growing economy in the European Union according to the European Commission’s au-tumn economic forecast.

Brendan Jennings, Managing Partner, Deloitte, said: “Our busi-ness leaders are both optimistic of the country’s strong potential for economic growth and of the ability of their firm to match or exceed that level - two-thirds (66 per cent) of the business leaders questioned believe that their busi-ness will grow even faster than the Irish economy in the next 12

months.“A staggering 93 per cent of

companies intend to expand their businesses over the next year

which will almost certainly trans-late into jobs as 87 per cent are also planning on increasing their workforce. All of which bodes well for the economy.”

Julie Sinnamon, chief executive of Enterprise Ireland said the sur-vey results weren’t a major sur-prise to Enterprise Ireland.

“The skills issue is one that is constantly raised by our clients as a key constraint,” said Ms Sin-namon.

“In response, we have been helping Irish companies develop leadership capability, both of the CEOs and of their wider teams. “Continuing to win the ‘war for talent’ is a key determinant of success in international markets.”

The survey’s findings were pre-sented at this year’s CEO Forum at Dublin Castle on October 22.

•Three quarters (77 per cent) of survey participants were CEOs of SME businesses (with less than 250 employees) with the balance being made up of larger company CEOs.

CatCh Me If You Can

there’s a giant game of chasing taking place in Dublin City Centre, on halloween night (oc-tober 31). Catch Me If You Can is a quirky race through city streets with runners, either solo or in teams of up to four, trying to make it to a series of checkpoints as fast as they can, while avoiding being caught by chasers.

Runners caught become Chasers themselves, turning to pursue their former friends and allies. It’s a free, alcohol-free event organised by not-for-profit community led Alt Events. Register at facebook.com/alteventsdublin where there’s more information.

League of LegenDs

If LoL means more to you than lots of laughter you’re probably a gamer and might want to head along to Croke Park for the League of Legends super Mega Viewing Party for the finals of the 2015 World Championship.

Everyone that attends will receive some fantastic gifts they’ll be able to use on their League of Legends accounts and cosplay and Halloween costumes are highly encouraged.

The event runs from midday until around 7.30pm and is open to people of all ages, however anyone under 16 will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. You can find details at eventbrite.ie.

You can also catch the finals action at the new Odeon, Charleston Shopping Centre, St Margaret’s Road, Finglas, Dublin 11 at 11am on Saturday (October 31). Visit www.odeoncinemas.ie for details.

Come along to a spoooooooky howl-o-ween event at Dogs trust’s rehoming centre in finglason friday october 30.

Any little ghouls in attendance will have a wickedly wonderful time with a tour of the rehoming centre, a Howl-o-ween themed dog safety workshop, lots of fun activities and plenty of tasty treats to eat.

There’ll also be some creepy competitions with great prizes to be handed out.

a fingal festival of fire will take place this halloween saturday night (october31) at swords Castle from 6pm to 10pm.

Courtesy of Fingal County Council, there will be wicked witches, ghastly ghouls and grisly gremlins in this free event.

There will be a scary tunnel for the little ones and for the more adventurous, a super scary spine-tingling tunnel as well as music and dancing.

For the grand finale a magnificent fireworks display is planned, as no Halloween event would be the same without one.

All the fun begins at 6pm at Swords Towns Park to the rear of Swords Castle.

Also, Swords Octoberfest will take place in Swords Castle from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 1.
