all primary schools in ballymun are getting a christmaspresent of ‘buddy

benches’ under a new initiative designed to combat social isolation and encourage kindness and compassion in children.

The benches are being made by Northside men’s sheds and inmates from Wheatfield Prison who are helping the Andy Morgan Foundation (AMF) in its latest drive to tackle loneliness in the schoolyard.

The buddy bench campaign was officially launched last week in Holy Spirit GNS and plans are underway to spread the idea across the city during 2016.

The foundation, set up in memory of Santry man Andy Morgan who took his own life on New Year’s Eve 2010, came up with the plan earlier this year when his family took a trip to Poland.

It was a poignant holiday as Andy’s last trip abroad shortly before he died was to Krakow.

A photo of Andy sitting on a bench in the historic Polish city has become a treasured family memento.

“When we were going we said we’d go and try and find that bench and get a photograph of our son Jamie on it because he’s the image of Andy,” said his partner Joanne.

“I was searching for the bench on Google when I came across posts for Buddy Benches that are in America.”

The concept behind buddy benches is that they provide a safe space for children. When a child feels left out or lonely, they can sit on the bench and designated ‘buddy listeners’ will reach out to them.

“I just thought it was a really sweet idea and I asked a few guys in the foundation what they thought about it and they loved it,” Joanne said.

“It’s as much for the children not on the bench as it is for the one who is sitting on it. It’s basically to teach kids kindness and compassion for each other and to show them how to help each other out.”

The foundation team set about finding out where they could get benches made and approached local men’s sheds to see if they could help. The men’s shed concept of helping combat social isolation fitted in perfectly with the AMF’s aim to get people talking, so the lads were only too happy to help.

“We rang up Wheatfield Prison too and the guys in there have made a few for us as well so we’re going up to see them next week,” Joanne continued.

“There’s about 12 benches made so far and every primary school in Ballymun is getting one. We’re going to get them all out before Christmas.

“After Christmas we’ll try and get all of Finglas done and then we’ll probably move to Cabra.

We want to get the whole city covered.

“The feedback has been very positive. We’ve been getting messages on our Facebook page from schools all around the country looking for them.”

Joanne says support for the campaign has been amazing, with men’s sheds in Baldoyle, Swords and Mulhuddart churning out benches and suppliers like Fleetwood Paints in Finglas donating materials.

Housing body buys 49-unit Finglas estate

An approved hous-ing body has bought an entire housing estate in Finglas it

emerged last week.

Thuath Housing, which provides housing to those on the council’s housing waiting list, purchased the entire 49 unit housing estate on Farnham Drive between Erin’s Isle and Einn Eber Fort.

The estate, known as An Riasc, was originally intended for a mix of public and private housing.

Local councillors learned of the sale last week and are due to be briefed this week by coun-cil officials at an area commit-tee meeting.

“It appears this purchase was done in consultation with city council officials but not councillors,” said Cllr Paul McAuliffe.

“While I welcome much needed social housing, I am alarmed that the council seem to be breeching the basic principle of a social mix in this estate.

“Nobody is opposed to

increasing the supply of social housing and in order for new projects to receive community support they must be based on the hard earned lesson that communities must be of mixed tenure with a positive social mix.

“I am opposed to poor plan-ning decisions being made in the midst of a housing crisis, we will merely be repeating the mistakes of the past.”

An Riasc is a new build estate made up of mainly three and four bedroom three storey ter-raced houses.

New Mac Thomáis book launched in GlasnevinA NEW book featuring a collection of essays by legendary North-side historian, the late Éamonn Mac Thomáis, was launched last week at Glasnevin Museum.

Born in Dublin and described by many as the quintessential Dubliner, Mac Thomáís wrote six books that captured the essence of the city for his generation.

Me Jewel and Darlin’ Dublin,

Gur Cake and Coal Blocks, The La-bour and The Royal, Down Dub-lin Streets, The Lady at the Gate and Janey Mack Me Shirt is Black brought his natural storytelling talent to a wide audience and

helped pave the way for a popu-lar RTÉ series that’s still remem-bered fondly to this day.

He was also one of Ireland’s most knowledgeable historians and a gifted tour guide.

He passed on his trade to his son Shane, who was historian at Glasnevin Cemetery until he passed away suddenly in March,

2014.Éamonn was a staunch Repub-

lican and editor of An Phoblacht, a position that landed him in prison twice, and Three Shouts on a Hill features writings from that period of his life.

The articles in the book were originally published in An Pho-blacht in 1981/82.

The book was launched by Sinn Fein TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh. Speakers on the night included Cllr Mícheál Mac Donncha (SF), historian Lorcan Collins and for-mer An Phoblacht editor Rita O’Hare.

The family of Éamonn Mac Thomáis also attended the launch.

Pictured at the launch were (l-r): Aengus O’Snodaigh TD (SF), Haily Lemaire, Damien Thomas, Rosaleen McThomáis, Morgane Lemaire, Rodica Thomas and Cllr Micheal MacDonncha (SF). PHOTO: DARREN KINSELLA

Graveyard on the way in Dublin 15FINGAL County Council has reached an agreement with landowners that will allow con-struction of a new graveyard in Dublin 15.

The news was confirmed last week by Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar,

“The graveyard will be located in the Kellystown area close to Luttrellstown Community Col-lege, and not far from Luttrell-stown Castle,” the minister said. “There has been a need for a new graveyard for a number of years since space ran out in the Cas-tleknock (St Brigid’s) and Clon-silla (St Mary’s) churchyards.

“There is a lot of space in Mul-huddart Graveyard but it is quite far from Castleknock, Clonsilla and Blanchardstown parish

“Planning and design on the new graveyard will begin im-mediately. It’s expected to have sufficient capacity for several decades.”

Tánaiste and Labour TD for Dublin West, Joan Burton, said she was pleased the graveyard plans had taken a major step for-ward.

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

Politics dragged back into the gutter

IT WAS hard to know how to feel while watching the ‘RTÉ Investigates’ pro-gramme last week.

At times it veered dangerously close to a hybrid of ‘Fr Ted’ and ‘Killinaskul-ly’, featuring grotesque caricatures of politicians who might be inclined to use such lines as: “That money was just resting in my account.”

Of course, the sleeveenism exposed did a disservice to the majority of de-cent, law-abiding elected representa-tives in this country. But given the public interest at stake, RTÉ was fully justifi ed in taking such a covert ap-proach.

Ultimately, it dragged us back, kick-

ing and screaming, to the bad old days of planning corruption that sullied public life in the 1980s and ‘90s. This was ‘nod, nod, wink, wink’ politics of the worst kind; laid bare by some slick

investigative journalism that repre-sented public service broadcasting at its best.

It wasn’t even a case of hands fum-bling in the greasy till - it was the sense

of power that some of these council-lors felt they had to infl uence others. Where did they get such infl ated egos and sense of entitlement?

The failure of other public repre-

sentatives to disclose all their inter-ests was equally worrying, highlight-ing a systemic failure to drag politics out of the mire, despite years of tribu-nals and promises of reform. It’s been three years since the publication of the Mahon Tribunal Report, which ex-amined certain allegations of planning corruption. Yet here we were again, a handful of councillors bringing local government into disrepute and taint-ing the good reputations of others in the process.

So where do we go from here? Is there a case for completely removing councillors from any involvement in the planning process, rezoning deci-sions or the drafting of development plans? Should every planning applica-tion go straight to a beefed-up, bet-ter resourced An Bord Pleanála and by-pass councils entirely? Moreover, is there a need at all for elected mem-bers on our local authorities?

Such knee-jerk reactions are to be expected in the immediate aftermath of a scandal and more measured heads than mine are needed to come up with a permanent solution.

But in the run up to next year’s general election, the RTÉ programme serves as a timely reminder that we get the public representatives we de-serve. Cute hoorism is still alive and well – be very careful with your vote.

The ‘RTÉ Investigates’ programme has raised fresh concerns about the planning process. PHOTO: BIGSTOCK▪

Jobs boost for Northside fromDCU Alpha planJack Gleeson

DETAILS of new plans to support 100 companies and 450 new jobs over the next three years at the DCU Alpha campus were unveiled last week.

Origially called DCU Innovation Campus, Alpha is an innovation cluster that has become home to more than 30 companies and 350 high-tech jobs since its establish-ment in late 2013.

The office, laboratory and in-dustrial research facility in DCU Alpha, based on Old Finglas Road, Glasnevin, has evolved into a group of innovative hi-tech and mostly start-up companies.

The first expansions under the new Alpha identity are a signifi-cant 30 new jobs announcement and R&D facility by Neosfar, an innovative Irish IoT (Internet of Things) company, and the confir-

mation by Indian software mul-tinational, NIIT Ltd, that its new European Delivery Centre will be located at the campus.

CEO of Neosfar, Mark Mc-Carville, said his company was delighted to announce their 30 highly skilled jobs at Alpha.

“We already know and work with many of the companies based here and that cluster of cross-fertilisation opportunity, coupled with the access to gradu-ate talent and key researchers in DCU, made this location an ideal one from our perspective,” he said.

“We look forward to moving

into our custom designed engi-neering lab and office space over the coming weeks.

“We are already well pro-gressed in terms of hiring the key staff we need.”

Alpha is backed by Enterprise Ireland and IDA and the latest phase of its development was announced by Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Rich-ard Bruton, who described it as a “huge boost” for the Northside.

“Two thirds of all new jobs are created by start-ups in their first five years of existence – that is why as part of the Action Plan for Jobs we are putting in place a range of measures to support entrepreneurs,” he said.

“Crucial in this is incubator and accelerator spaces and in-novation clusters - facilities for companies to locate in their early years of existence where they can

have access to supports, mentor-ing and crucially where they can be close to other entrepreneurs to share experiences and bounce ideas off.

“I was delighted to launch the DCU Innovation Campus in 2013 as part of our Action Plan for Jobs – and it is hugely encouraging to see today that they have doubled their ambitions.”

Local Labour TD, John Lyons, described news of the expansion as “an extremely positive devel-opment” for the community.

“DCU Alpha now intends to in-crease the number of businesses it supports from 30 to 100, which is more than double the amount envisaged in the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs in 2013,” he said.

“It is hugely encouraging to see that the approach of the Ac-tion Plan for Jobs is working and the benefits are reaching our lo-cal area.”

Local Sinn Fein councillor, Cathleen Carney Boud, also wel-comed the announcement but warned that necessary hous-ing and transport infrastructure must also be put in place.

“The area of Dublin North West has been severely affected by the economic collapse and austerity measures implemented by the current government,” she said.

“I would hope that new jobs will provide a much needed boost

for the local economy.“The Government must ensure

that the housing and accommo-dation needs for these new work-ers are met and there must be a review of parking protocol in the area.

“Local residents are already suffering the effects of overflow from DCU’s current capacity and measures must be put in place to ensure that parking needs are adequately met.”

Major expansion planned for Castleknock HotelJack Gleeson

PLANNING permission has been lodged for a massive €5.5 million development at Castleknock Hotel and Country Club.

The planned 21,280sq ft ex-pansion will create an additional 46 bedrooms at the hotel, bring-ing the total number to 190.

The project is expected to cre-ate up to 100 positions during the construction phase, with a further 20 new positions created at the hotel on completion.

This will bring the total num-ber of full-time and seasonal em-ployees to 220.

The planning application was lodged with Fingal County Coun-cil by Dublin architects, Cantrell and Crowley Architects, on behalf of FBD Property and Leisure Lim-ited (FBDPLL).

The additional rooms planned as part of the €5.5 million invest-ment will comprise 38 standard, five superior and three deluxe rooms.

Under the submitted plan, the day spa – currently located on the

first floor of the hotel – will move to the ground floor, with the ad-dition of a new aerobics suite and five new treatment rooms.

This will increase the over-all size of the day spa and lei-sure centre from 8,825sq ft to 10,760sq ft.

David Kelly, Chief Executive of FBDPLL, said: “Our hotels have been performing ahead of pro-jections, with Castleknock Hotel having made significant progress since the first green shoots of economic recovery emerged.

“With the Irish hotel sector now in full recovery mode and Dublin leading the way in terms of visitor numbers, we are now in a position where we can expand on our existing offering.

“We know that the demand for hotel rooms in the capital is high and growing, while the sup-ply of new rooms has stagnated

in recent years. We are delighted to be in a position whereby we can bring additional rooms to the market in a prime Dublin location to help meet growing demand for increased hotel capacity.”

FBDPLL own and manage three hotels in Ireland including Faithlegg House Hotel and Tower

Hotel in Waterford as well as two resorts in southern Spain; La Cala Resort and Sunset Beach Club.

Headquartered in Ireland, FB-DPLL employs over 700 people across portfolio in both Ireland and Spain.

Controversial outfit bring show to the academyAS YOU could probably guess from their name, Suicidal Tenden-cies were never afraid of a little controversy.

Formed in Venice, Califor-nia during the early 1980s, the group’s leader from the begin-ning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialised in vi-cious hardcore early on - building a huge following among skate-boarders - and lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk before turning their focus even-tually to thrash metal.

Early on, the group (whose original lineup included Muir, gui-tarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga, and drummer Amery Smith) found it increasingly dif-ficult to book shows due to ru-mours of its members’ affiliation with local gangs and consistent violence at their performances.

The underground buzz regard-ing Suicidal Tendencies grew too loud for labels to ignore though, as the quartet signed on with the indie label Frontier which issued Muir and company’s classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album quickly became the best-selling hardcore album up to that point.

Suicidal Tendencies proved in-fluential for future speed/thrash metal bands, but despite its early success, the quartet’s reputa-tion preceded them, as no other record label was willing to take them on (in addition, Los Angeles banned the group from playing around this time, lasting until the early 1990s).

Not much was heard from the group for several years afterward

(leading many to believe that Suicidal had broken up), but Muir and company eventually found a home with Caroline Records.

By this time, half of the origi-nal lineup had left; Muir and May-orga were the only holdovers, while guitarist Rocky George and drummer RJ Herrera rounded out the group.

Then 1987 saw the release of Suicidal’s next release, ‘Join the Army’, which spawned another popular skatepunk anthem, ‘Pos-sessed to Skate’, as more and more metal heads began to be spotted in Suicidal’s audience.

Soon after, Suicidal was finally offered a major-label contract (with Epic), as another lineup change occurred: Mayorga exited the band, while newcomer Bob Heathcote took his spot; and a second guitarist, Mike Clark, was added as well. This Suicidal line-up’s first album together, 1988’s ‘How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today’, showed that their transformation from hardcore to heavy metal was now complete, as did a com-pilation of two earlier EPs, 1989’s ‘Controlled by Hatred’.

Suicidal’s first release of the new decade, 1990’s ‘Lights, Camera, Revolution’, was an-other success; its video for the explosive ‘You Can’t Bring Me Down’ received repeated air-ings on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball program, while the album would

be certified gold in the US a few years later.

The release also signalled the arrival of new bassist Rob-ert Trujillo, whose penchant for funk added a new element to the group’s sound. The group tried to broaden their audience even further by opening a string of arena shows for prog-metallists Queensrÿche during the summer of 1991.

Their next release, 1992’s ‘The Art of Rebellion’ proved to be one of Suicidal’s most musically experimental albums of their career. Muir and Trujillo also teamed up around this time for

a funk metal side project, Infec-tious Grooves (including several other participants, such as Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Per-kins) and issued a debut release ‘The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move’.

Upset that the group’s classic debut had been out of print for several years by this point, Muir decided to re-record the entire record with Suicidal’s 1990s line-up under the title ‘Still Cyco After All These Years’

Now the band is back with their brand new album in 13 years and they are Live at the Academy on February 14.

Lee Scratch Perry to go ‘Ape’ in DublinREGARDED with awe through-out the music world, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry holds the sta-tus of one of the most enduring and original reggae producers and artists of all time.

From his early days in the 1960s as a singer and engineer for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One in Kingston, through his pro-duction of the seminal Wailers’ classics ‘African Herbsman’ and ‘Soul Revolution’, Perry’s inno-

vative style marks him as one of reggae’s original treasures. His on the edge creative genius remains evident in his own solo albums of the 1970s through his steady stream of mind-boggling releases of the 1980s.

He’s known as ‘The Godfather of Reggae’ or ‘The Creator of Dub’ among other things.

He’s worked with everyone from Bob Marley to Max Romeo, received Grammy nominations and was nominated by Rolling

Stone in their top 100 artists of all time.

It was in 1976 that he produced the seminal ‘Super Ape’ dub al-bum with his studio band The Upsetters. He’s coming back to Ireland with his full live band to perform Super Ape in its entirety in celebration of the fact that the album is 40 years old. Incidental-ly it’s his 80th birthday in March.

The ‘Super Ape’ 40th Anni-versary Irish Tour is Live at The Academy on Thursday, March 3. Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.▪

Dublin Marathon and Fingal County Council are backing the initiative that promotes an in-crease in activity levels for the early teenage population.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Ireland is set to become the most obese coun-try in Europe by 2030,

The KiDSMARATHON pro-gramme is the first of its kind in the country and it links into the school curriculum.

To date over 600, sixth class pupils from 22 Fingal schools have taken part in the eight-week programme.

The participants completed 25.2 miles in that time, before running the last mile of the Dub-lin Marathon last October. Speak-ing about the programme.

Amy Sugrue, of Castleknock

Vaping trend helps local smokers quitA LOCAL initiative to help people quit smoking and save money has started to take shape on the Northside in re-cent weeks.

Vapourpal Northside, located in Northside Shopping Centre, Coolock, has started selling electronic cigarettes at their ki-osk in the last couple of weeks.

And sales assistant, Edel Fitzmaurice, says that it has already been a resounding suc-cess.

“We started selling e-ciga-rettes because I was a smoker and quit with their help, so I wanted to pass my experience onto other people and help them kick the habit,” she ex-plained.

“Once people realise that they’re also saving up to 85 per cent on their usual smoking bill, they want to know more!”

Vaping, as electronic smok-ing is called, has grown in popu-larity over the past two or three years and Vapourpal Northside is catering for existing vapers as well as those giving up smok-ing now.

“We’ve added a wider range of liquid flavours and add-ons to the line because we don’t want to disappoint,” Edel says.

“We source our own V Mist range of e-liquids from the UK. We’ve also added in a new range of e-cigarettes, from the Mistcig range, which suits the smaller budget, as well as the sleeker eCab that suits the more cos-mopolitan vaper.”

Smokers or vapers can check out Vapourpal Northside at Northside Shopping Centre, Co-olock where they can sample e-liquids from Edel or Lynda. The unit can be contacted by calling 086-4140117.

WITH the festive season upon us, most houses will have an increase in hustle, bustle, guests and of course Santa Claus! As some dogs can find all of this quite overwhelming, this week’s column is about indoor ken-nels.

An indoor kennel should only be used as a safe place where your adult dog can take himself off to if he needs to get away from things that worry him.

A little place he can call his own, where he will not be disturbed and can rest - with the door permanently open.

Please note that if a dog is shut in an indoor kennel for long periods of time, this can become a serious welfare issue and is not something that we recom-mend.

There are several different types of indoor kennel, but probably the most

commonly used is a crate that folds down for easy storage when not in use.

When you choose your dog’s crate, it should be big enough for him to be able to sit, stand up and turn around in. He must also be able to lay flat on his side and stretch his legs out without touch-ing the sides.

So how can you make it a nice place where your dog will want to go? Here are a few tips.

• The kennel should be made into a place where your dog can feel happy and relaxed, so you need to set it up so that it will be cosy and comfortable for him.

• Put it in a part of the home where you spend a lot of time, so that your dog has you nearby and won’t be lonely to start with – or he may begin by hating his new home.

• To help keep out draughts, try to place it in a corner and then cover the back and perhaps also the sides with a

blanket or towel to make it more den-like.

• Put comfortable bedding inside that is also easy to clean.

• You will need to give your dog ac-cess to water. Put in a water bowl or get one that clips onto the side of the ken-nel so it can’t get knocked over.

• Put some treats in the kennel to tempt your dog inside. Do this several times a day and start to give your dog all of his meals inside the kennel. Don’t close the door yet.

• If your dog has bedding that he has been using up until now, after a few days place this in the kennel with one of his toys. Give him lots of fuss or a treat whenever you see him go into the ken-nel.

A very Merry Wuffmas and a Yappy New Year to you from all of us in Dogs Trust!

Remembering the Irish Citizen Army

Daithi O Riain

THE Irish Citizen Army, a social-ist republican organisation and one of the driving forces behind the 1916 Rising, was established in November 1913 during the Great Lockout.

The Lockout saw over 20,000 Dublin workers denied the right to work, during a mass dispute over trade union recognition.

Workers’ demonstrations were

banned and the Dublin Metro-politan Police were used to break up assemblies. A mass rally ar-ranged for August 31 in O’Connell Street was banned by the British authorities, but a defiant Jim Larkin, the leader of the ITGWU, decided that would not stop him from addressing the people of Dublin. Dressed in disguise, Larkin addressed the assembled crowds from the balcony of the Imperial Hotel, owned by the tycoon that had caused the Lockout, William Martin Murphy.

The police soon moved against Larkin and arrested him. At the same time they violently attacked the people in O’Connell Street.

The workers defended them-selves, but the DMP, backed up by the Royal Irish Constabulary, went on a rampage throughout the city.

The violence by police was so serious that August 31 1913 is

known as Ireland’s first Bloody Sunday.

With Larkin in jail, James Connolly, a leading trade union of-ficial, came from Belfast to Dublin to take control of the strike.

Connolly realised that the work-ers could never be undefended again and ordered that workers’ demonstrations from that point on be defended by trade unionists armed with pick-axe handles.

Following the murder of the ITGWU official James Nolan, the 30,000 mourners at his funeral were protected by members of the union armed with pick-axe handles. Faced with such opposi-tion, the police decided to avoid confrontation.

Larkin was released from prison on November 13, and at a massive victory rally held outside Liberty Hall that night, James Connolly announced the

formation of the Irish Citizen Army as a workers’ defence force. Connolly also announced that the army was to be trained by Captain Jack White and called for volun-teers. Over 1,000 hands were raised in the air and the Citizen Army was born.

The new army had its head-quarters at Liberty Hall and was under the leadership of Larkin, Connolly and Jack White.

Other prominent members included Sean O’Casey, a leading Dublin writer and socialist, and Countess Markievicz, an early member of the Army Council.

As a socialist organisation the army was open to both women and men, who could hold equal rank. Training soon began and at the army’s first public appearance over 40 volunteers assembled in Croydon Park to be drilled by

Captain White. The establishment of the Citizen

Army was an important step by the workers of Dublin that had a major impact on Ireland’s revolu-tionary struggle. James Connolly later commented that the very presence of the Citizen Army was enough to check the violence of the State, and the army never had to be called into action again during the Lockout. While military training was initially a priority, even from its earliest days the Citizen Army was involved in socialist activity including defend-ing workers’ rallies and preventing evictions.

When the Lockout ended, Larkin went to America to raise much needed funds for the ITGWU leaving Connolly to take command of the Army.

Under Connolly the Citizen Army became a highly effective organisation and was re-orien-tated on a revolutionary path that lead to the 1916 Rising.

At the end of 1913, Captain White, writing almost prophetical-ly to the Citizen Army, described their role in the coming Irish revo-lution, ‘Ultimately Ireland cannot be free without you nor you with-out Ireland. Strengthen your hand then for double the task’.

That’s according to a new sur-vey from Q-Park Ireland that also found 60 per cent of us still pre-fer to do our Christmas shopping in town rather than a shopping centre.

The survey reveals that almost half of us (46 per cent) will make between two and four trips to the city centre over Christmas and 63 per cent will travel by car com-pared to just 32 per cent using public transport.

Christmas gift shopping is the primary motivator for those in-tending to visit the city centre (50 per cent) while almost one in five (17 per cent) will go in to soak up the Christmas atmosphere.

According to the Q-Park re-search, Henry Street is the place

where shoppers will spend the most time this festive season (40 per cent), followed by Graf-ton Street (34 per cent) and the greater St Stephen’s Green area (12 per cent). Most shoppers (64

per cent) plan to spend three to four hours on average per shopping trip. When it comes to choosing how they travel, over a quarter (27 per cent) say that getting within close proximity of

their desired destination was the most important factor. Getting in and out of the shops quickly is a priority for a quarter (25 per cent) while 22 per cent admit that difficulty transporting shopping bags is a big deterrent from us-ing public transport.

Simon Madden of Q-Park Ire-land, says the survey shows that making a trip to the city centre is still one of our favourite things to do at Christmas.

“Despite ongoing roadworks and diversions around the city centre due to the LUAS Cross City, all of our Q-Park locations, including St Stephen’s Green, Setanta and Clerys, are open for business 24/7 throughout the Christmas season,” he added.

“We are currently offering a ‘four hours for the price of three’ shopper special parking rate to ensure that busy shoppers are getting the best value for money during the Christmas period and it’s proving to be quite popular with our customers this Decem-ber.”

A message of hope this Christmas

Locals marked the 20th anniversary of the lighting of a Christmas tree at the junction of Buckingham Street and Killarney Street, an area plagued by drug dealers in the past.

Dublin City Council first erected the tree in 1995 as a symbol of hope for the community, particularly its young people, and to commemorate all those who died from drug addiction.

This followed lobbying from Inner City Organisations Network (ICON) and the Drugs Working Group.

Carina O’Brien, co-ordinator of ICON, said in the region of 500 people would have lost their lives from drug-related issues in the area over the last 20 years.

“However, this could be a modest figure as prior to 2004 and the setting up of the Drug Related Deaths Index, there was no way to measure or capture this figure,” Ms O’Brien told Northside People.

“This event is a reminder of the extent of the suffering that people from the north east inner city have experienced.

“The drugs issue has had a devastating effect on families in this area and impacted on how families grieved for their loved ones.

“Families felt they couldn’t grieve because of the stigma and shame attached to drug use.

“Families still feel they are in limbo while grieving because they are being judged and have nowhere to go.”

Ms O’Brien said that after the first tree went up “something positive” happened in the area.

“It was once paralysed with shame but now there is a space for loved ones,” she said. “The tree became so symbolic that it acted as a deterrent to young people to use drugs as they could see just how many young lives were lost.

“A permanent memorial was erected 15 years ago and it reminds young people of what has been lost.”

A large number of family members of the deceased were among those in attendance on the night.

ICON, established in 1993, is a network bringing together local projects to fight against increasing disadvantage and long-term unemployment to make sure that local voices are heard.

Ms O’Brien said there has been huge progress made over the years to help families affected by the drugs issue.

“Through the ICON Drugs Working Group, Citywide was established and through its work the Family Support Network was born,” said Ms O’Brien.

“This is now a national organisation made up of 70 groups across the country but had its roots in the north inner city.

“There are also a number of other community-based services that all support families around this issue from the neighbourhood youth projects

to Crinan Youth and Family Support.

“There are a number of supports and programmes in place that cover three main elements or pillars, from providing direct support to policy development to awareness raising.

“A number of projects provide training to community groups and statutory service providers around counselling and advocacy for families affected by drug use.”

Ms O’Brien said the austerity cuts in recent years have disproportionately affected the most disadvantaged communities within the State, including her one.

“Community funding was cut by over 30 per cent while cuts in general were only seven per cent,” she stated.

“This has huge impacts on both current and future delivery of drug, youth and family support services.”

Ms O’Brien added: “In order for this community to thrive there needs to be focussed investment with real inter-agency funding and support and a reversal of those disproportionate cuts or unfortunately the future could be a very bleak one for the area.”

Speaking about the tree lighting event, local man Fergus McCabe said: “It marks the loss and hurt we have experienced in our families and communities, and again reminds us that when we stand together with purpose, we can find ways beyond the destruction of drugs and violence.”

Fort Motor Group opens two more Kia dealerships in Dublin

Fort Motors Kia will serve the West Dublin area from a premises close to the Blanchardstown Cen-tre, while Airton Kia opens on Airton Road in Tallaght.

Airton Kia is situated in an im-pressive 45,000sq foot facility off the Greenhills Road with an ac-credited state-of-the-art service and bodyshop operation.

Fort Motors Kia, meanwhile, will operate from a modern 25,000sq foot premises in Cool-mine Industrial Estate in Blan-chardstown, within easy reach of the many shoppers coming to the area.

Staff are currently being re-cruited to supplement the experi-enced sales and service teams in both outlets. The expansion will

bring the group’s workforce to al-most 100.

According to dealer principals Cyril and Paul Molloy, adding the Kia franchise to the group makes strategic sense at a time when car sales are predicted to keep rising. “On the one hand, Kia is clearly a brand on an upward curve in a buoyant marketplace for car sales,” he said. “At the same time the Kia range very much com-plements our existing line-up of models. We are delighted to be able to provide a fuller suite of vehicles to our customers, to meet the greater diversity we are seeing in car buying.

“Geographically we are excited to have two dealerships strad-dling both sides of the city, both

in areas with lots of potential for the Kia brand.”

James Brooks, Managing Di-rector of Kia Ireland, added: “We are delighted to add the Fort Mo-tor Group to our growing dealer network. Our growth strategy is qualitative and the Fort Mo-tor Group, with its proven sales and customer service record, is exactly the type of partner we require in driving our ambition to become one of Ireland’s leading brands based on a reputation of quality, design, engineering and customer care.”

Founded over 50 years ago, Fort Motor Group is one of the largest and longest established in Dublin.

A newly opened commercial centre In Tallaght brings the group’s total number of outlets in the capital to five.

it sounded too good to be true. However, she was willing to try anything to lose weight again.

The following week, with her friend by her side, she went to her local group.

“Being surrounded by people who were all on the same journey was really reassuring,” recalls Claire. “We were all learning to-gether and had the same goals. My consultant was so lovely and encouraging, I left my first group believing in myself again.”

The night of her first weigh-in she was nervous. She had never eaten so much and was sure she had gained weight. She lost six pounds and was shocked.

“I just couldn’t believe I could eat potatoes and pasta and lose weight,” she says. “I ate curries, chilli, chips and lost six pounds; it was unbelievable.”

Claire loves the fact that she can live her life and still lose weight; she doesn’t have to miss out.

“I go on holidays quite often and I’m always eager to face the scales when I return,” she says. “There’s never any judgment if I gain.”

“I’m still on my own weight loss journey,” she adds. “I’ve about a stone and a half left to lose but I’m confident I will get there. There’s nothing better than see-ing people succeed, being happy

eventually she was wearing a size 26/28.

Claire became unemployed and wanted something to do to keep routine in her daily life. She joined a gym and within a year was in a size 18.

Feeling fab and determined she set herself a goal for six months’ time - to complete the mini marathon.

But unfortunately she lost sight of that goal. She felt that life got in the way and she couldn’t keep up her gym and diet regime.

June came around and Claire struggled to complete the 10km she was once so eager to finish. She was so disappointed in her-self and knew that she had to do something about it.

Claire heard of Slimming World from a friend and thought

Working in a Chinese take-away from the age of 14, already overweight, she wore a size 16 and went through her school and college years with no knowledge

of good nutrition. She admits she lived off convenience foods and a variety of take-aways daily.

Dublin dementia projects win awardspEOpLE with an intellectual disability and dementia in Dublin are benefiting from a new digital life story project which will help them commu-nicate better as they cope with increasing forgetfulness.

A Daughters of Charity Disabil-ity Support Services project was awarded the DCU Elevator Award for Innovation in Dementia, es-tablished by the Dementia Eleva-tor programme at DCU.

It highlights initiatives from around the country that contrib-ute in a meaningful and signifi-cant way to the everyday lives of people affected by dementia.

The life story project has helped 21 people with intellec-tual disability, at varying points on the dementia diagnosis spec-trum, to create their own virtual life stories using personal photos,

favourite songs and video clips. Users and staff received train-

ing in the use of a pre-identified suite of easy-to-use life-story and music apps which allows for a more creative, person-centred approach to dementia care.

An award of €1,000 will now help the Daughters of Char-ity Disability Support Services to further develop their project.

Pamela Dunne, Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Daughters of Charity, Navan Road said: “The value of life-story work in sup-porting meaningful communica-tion for persons who are deeply forgetful as a consequence of de-mentia is well-recognised.

“This new approach will have a wide reach to all persons with dementia, opening up innovative person-centred opportunities for meaningful communication across the continuum of demen-

tia.”A runner-up prize was awarded

to Will Grandad Remember Me? a Dublin schools’ dementia educa-tion project.

The Dementia Services Infor-mation and Development Centre (DSIDC) developed the project to increase awareness among secondary school students about ageing well and the risk factors for dementia such as smoking, alcohol and obesity.

A special Dementia Champi-ons Award was also presented to the Dublin-based Dargle Group: Conversation Coaching for Peo-ple with Dementia. This was de-veloped by two speech language therapists to help counteract the communication difficulties experienced by people with de-mentia which can cause loss of confidence, social withdrawal, isolation and depression.

A 2-in-1 moisturising cream, Crème Hydra Finish simultaneously beautifies the skin providing an instant, radiant glow to erase any signs of tiredness, while the skin benefits from the hydrating properties of Mallow Extract. Upon application, the delicate, floral-scented cream transforms instantly like magic. As it is applied to the skin, the subtle lilac shade transforms in colour to adapt perfectly to the individual’s skin tone, achieving an exact match. The lightweight moisturising cream conceals imperfections whilst allowing the skin to breathe, for a beautifully even complexion with a healthy, radiant glow. The lilac shade adapts to any skintone and perks up dull skin, acting like a colour corrector as it

Tricks to keeping in the heat

ample, reduce the temperature during the day when everyone is out of the house at work or

school, or overnight when every-one is tucked in bed under blan-kets and comforters.

l Place door sweeps on exte-rior doors.

These narrow strips of vi-

nyl that attach to the base of a door can help reduce heat es-cape.

With the summer holidays now just a distant hope for the future and winter’s cold weather biting deep, many home owners are looking for ways to cut down energy costs over the coming months.

Heat transfer - that’s warm air from inside the home escaping to the outdoors - is the main cul-prit that drives up winter energy bills. Fortunately, a few simple home improvements - and even some decor changes - can help reduce heating costs this winter.

First, identify the biggest en-ergy leeches in your home.

Are the doors drafty? Do the windows rattle in a

slight breeze? Is the insulation in your home’s attic less than ad-equate?

Consider these minor home improvement projects to help reduce heat transfer and trim energy bills.

l Windows and doors are prime points for heat to escape from the home.

Before the weather turns any colder, seal around doors, windows, electrical outlets and plumbing fixtures. Caulk, spray foam, weather-stripping and a free weekend are all you need to accomplish this job, which can help you realise significant en-ergy savings and create a more comfortable indoor environment this winter.l Maximize your energy ef-

ficiency by having your boiler and fireplaces professionally cleaned.l Install programmable ther-

mostats if you don’t already have them. If your home is already equipped with programmable thermostats, be sure to set the temperature to be lower during periods when you’ll be out of the house or need less heat. For ex-

SAVING money never goes out of style, especially when it comes to home utility bills.

Stay warm and cosy this winter▪

Get ready for the big freezeTHE big freeze is just around the corner and while we might be able to keep snug and cosy indoors, it’s a different story for our pipes which mightn’t be able to withstand the cold if not properly protected.

If you have an ongoing prob-lem with freezing pipes, now is a good time to ensure that you won’t be caught out this year. Insulate your troublesome pipes with lagging bandages or foamed plastic tubing to minimise the possibility of freezing.

It’s also important to fix drip-

ping taps so that the leaking wa-ter does not freeze in the drain-age system overnight.

If a particularly bad cold snap does catch you out there are some steps you can take be-fore resorting to calling out the plumber.

If water will not flow from a tap or a cistern refuses to fill in cold weather, a plug of ice may have formed in one of the supply pipes.

The plug cannot be in a pipe supplying those taps or float valves that are working normally, so you should be able to locate

the blockage fairly quickly. In fact, freezing usually occurs

first in the roof space. Copper water pipes transmit heat rap-idly so by applying heat such as a hair dryer or hot water bottle near the suspect tap or valve and working your way along the pipe you should be able to thaw the blockage.

While thawing the pipes, leave the blocked tap open so that the water can flow as soon as the ice thaws.Delivery is carried out by our

Christmassafety tips

5. Always turn off and unplug the lights before working on them or moving them.

6. Use low voltage lights with an integral transformer that plugs into the mains supply.

7. Only use outdoor lights in outdoor locations. Check labels to be sure they have been certi-fied for outdoor use.

8. Stay well away from over-head electricity lines and other supply cables while installing lights.

9. Keep decorations and com-bustible materials well away from transformers and light bulbs to reduce the risk of fire.

10. Do not let lights come in

It’s vitally important that we are mindful of the dangers to avoid over the Christmas holi-days. The last thing you want is a happy time of the year turning to tragedy.

Electricity can’t be seen, smelt or heard and is perfectly safe when used in an appropriate manner.

But it can have devastating consequences if it’s interfered with.

Here are some safety tips that are particularly relevant when using Christmas lights.

1. Only use lights that have been tested and are in conform-ance with safety standards. This

should be noted on the packag-ing when you buy them.

2. Visually check the lights. Check for frayed wires, loose con-nections, damaged or cracked plugs or transformers etc. Never use damaged or home repaired lights.

3. Always replace burnt-out bulbs promptly with the same wattage bulbs.

4. Only use lights that have fuses. Ruptured fuses should only be replaced with fuses of the same size and rating. Never use makeshift or higher rated fuses.

WE ALL use electricity every day but it has many potential haz-ards which we all must learn to be careful of. And there are plenty of dangers to avoid over the holiday period.

Christmas lights can be a source of danger▪

close contact with sources of heat such as heaters, fireplaces, candles etc.

11. Switch out all lights before going to bed or leaving the house to protect against the risk of fire.

12. Ensure that outdoor lights are securely fastened to prevent them from being damaged by the wind or being blown onto overhead electricity supply lines. Never use nails, tacks or staples

to secure lights. Use insulated clips or hooks.

13. Do not overload sockets or extension cords. Always unwind extension cords completely to avoid overheating.

the return of the part-time job

few years these opportunities and indeed their counterparts in summer have been noticeable by their absence.

As I have previously said, the true sign of the economic recovery will not to be found in GDP figures (as they are often a questionable economic indicator) or in IT job announcements (although they certainly help), but rather in real world indications that people feel confident enough to spend money in shops, restaurants, art galleries, theatres and cinemas.

There is no better indication than a ‘Help Wanted’ sign adorning a window. They are the embodiment of the confidence people feel when they decide to head out for a meal once in a while instead of cooking, or go to the cinema instead of waiting for the film to hit TV.

By no

means should we return to the highly consumerist Celtic Tiger era where buying things was made a substitute for happiness, but this lack of fear of expenditure over and above the essentials is good for an economy and is great news for anyone looking for work in the service or retail sectors.

For individual students, getting a Christmas job is a great way to earn money to fund their next semester, and maybe to keep money coming in by working 1-2 days a week during term time, but there are also much wider benefits associated with the return of these sorts of jobs.

For a start, they are a great way of teaching students about

the world of work for good or for bad,

in addition to teaching

them

how to manage money. Having a son or daughter in

work can also alleviate financial pressure on parents, who, without the income their child receives would have to subsidise them.

What’s more the money that can be earned on breaks from study, means that students are more able to afford to stay in study, contributing to their personal development and to the betterment of our economy and country.

This is an important point. When casual and part-time work dries up in an economy, many students are unable to afford to stay in further education. The double whammy of a lack of work and rising university registration fees over the last few years has only exacerbated that problem. It’s amazing how interconnected these things can be.

Ireland’s economy is on the rise and the confidence that people now have in their personal financial circumstances means that the pool of disposable income shouldn’t be drying up any time soon.

Anyone looking for a Christmas job, or a job in the retail or service industry in general for that matter should keep a keen eye on window fronts near them. •Cormac Spencer is a Recruitment Consultant/ Director at Link Person-nel Services. Visit www.linkpersonnel.ie or call 01-8456312.

ONE of the most noticeable signs of the recovery in our economy is

the transformation of the once spotless windows of recessionary period shops, restaurants and cafes into cluttered spaces full of posters for local events, fliers for fitness classes and most importantly ‘Help Wanted’ signs enticing people to “apply within”.

As Christmas approaches and students look to earn a little extra money this is a welcome change. A couple of weeks’ work around Christmas used to be almost taken for granted, but in the last

As always, a visit is free. It’s open Monday to Friday from 2-6pm and from 11.30am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. Groups need to book in advance at stmartin.ie/crib/.

Grafton Street, c. 1905. A superb car with solid tyres, a French De Dion Bouton, watched by shoppers, heads up the street. At that time, before the introduction of the Model T Ford in 1910, cars were very expensive, costing around £1,000. The delivery cart on the left advertises Crane & Sons, well known in Dublin for their fine selection of pianos and organs.
