gramme to ensure that we max-imise all potential opportunities that the hospital’s presence in this community can deliver.

“This is a central part of our work and we are determined that the hospital will not only have a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of children and young people but also on the health and

wellbeing of the Dublin 8 commu-nity.”

David Slevin, the CEO of Tal-laght Hospital, said the proposed Model of Care will greatly enhance the care provided to the paediat-ric community in Dublin in line with international best practice.

“The paediatric team at Tal-laght Hospital is providing an

while providing an outlet nearby with easy access for the local population.”

Deputy Burton added: “The extensive new paediatric services will further enhance Connolly’s reputation as a major medical hub in Dublin West.”

Meanwhile, Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar, said the day marked an important milestone on the road to building a long-awaited world-class new National Chil-dren’s Hospital.

“The plans are spectacular and the design is iconic,” he stated.

“It will be the largest single in-vestment in healthcare in Ireland ever and subject to planning per-mission work will be well under-way in the new year.”

Minister of State, Kathleen Lynch, added: “There has always been a determined focus by this Government to bring this crucial-ly important project to fruition. When constructed, the new chil-dren’s hospital will be the most significant health project of this generation.”

Overseen by the National Paediatric Hospital Develop-ment Board (NPHDB), the design team led by renowned children’s healthcare architect firm, BDP with Irish partners O’Connell Ma-hon Architects (OCMA) has car-

ried out intensive work over the past 12 months.

There were over 1,000 hours of engagement and consulta-tion with residents from the lo-cal Dublin 8 area and with staff from the existing three children’s hospitals, as well as with families, young people and children who are former or current users of the service.

The extensive consultation process was aimed at the devel-opment of a world-class building which has been designed to en-able staff to deliver the best pos-sible clinical care for children and young people, while also seeking to provide a pleasant environ-ment for staff and families.

A central objective for the NPH-DB is that there is an economic and social benefit for the Dublin 8 residential and business com-munities.

A study is being carried out to audit the existing skills and la-bour available in the area as part of a process that will identify the scale and type of educational and employment opportunities which will arise with both the construc-tion phase and the operational phase of the hospital.

John Pollock, Project Direc-tor said: “This project will have a transformational impact on the local Dublin 8 community.

“We are putting in place a pro-

integral role in developing the in-tegration process with the other two children’s hospitals,” he said.

“We are very excited at Tal-laght about the development of the Paediatric and Urgent Care Satellite Centre on our campus here in Tallaght Hospital.”

Dr Sean Walsh, interim CEO of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital,

Crumlin, added: “There will be exceptional opportunities on the campus to partner in the area of clinical research as well as to fur-ther develop existing clinical syn-ergies. We are closer to the vision of developing a medical campus of excellence in Dublin 8 which will benefit everyone for many decades to come.”

Minister unveils ninety new high-tech buses

customers alike, the new fully accessible vehicles have bilingual passenger information signs in the upper and lower saloons an-nouncing the next bus stop, im-proved safety features with 12 colour cameras and a staircase CCTV monitor, wheelchair space with separate dedicated space for a child’s buggy and free Wi-Fi.

Dublin Bus Chief Executive, Ray Coyne, said they were de-lighted to welcome the minister to the unveiling.

“With the announcement today that passenger numbers are up by two per cent the importance of continually improving the Dub-lin Bus fleet and experience is clear,” he said. “We are commit-ted to maintaining and improving our delivery of a quality bus serv-ice to the Greater Dublin region. The addition of these new buses to the fleet along with a number of other recent improvements including Real Time Passenger Information and free Wi-Fi has

ensured the customer experience is always improving.”

The environmentally friendly additions to the fleet meet ‘Euro 6’ emission standards, consume less fuel and are quieter, mean-ing the whole community and not just customers and drivers will benefit from their arrival on Dub-lin’s roads.

The SG model buses are manu-

factured by Volvo Bus Corpora-tion, Sweden, and the Wrights Group, Ballymena, Co Antrim. The vehicles began entering serv-ice in January and are operating on routes 13, 15, 27 and 40.

Dublin Bus said the new buses are a significant development in the provision of comfortable and sustainable public transport for the people of Dublin.

The minister’s visit also marked the announcement that Dublin Bus passenger numbers are up by 700,000 for the first half of this year.

Speaking at the unveiling Min-ister Donohoe said: “The invest-ment in these new double decker buses demonstrates the Govern-ment’s ongoing commitment to providing enhanced public trans-port services and infrastructure.

“The bus is fast becoming a more attractive public transport option for many users. The deliv-ery of 90 new vehicles, equipped with a range of enhanced fea-tures, will provide greater com-fort and convenience for Dublin Bus customers and will contrib-ute to providing a more sustain-

able mode of transport, particu-larly for commuting purposes.”

The minister added. “I also welcome the announcement by Dublin Bus that passenger num-bers have increased by 700,000 in the first half of 2015.”

The 90 new buses are being funded by the Government’s cap-ital programme through the Na-tional Transport Authority. The vehicles represent an investment of €34.7 million in the Dublin Bus fleet replacement programme.

The buses will replace older vehicles and will result in a more efficient, reliable fleet, with an average age of seven years. Equipped with a number of fea-tures that will improve the jour-ney experience for drivers and

Nigerian Carnival for BallymunBALLYMUN will come alive with an explosion of entertainment and cultural celebration as the Nigerian Carnival Ireland (NCI) brings the sights, sounds and tastes of Africa to the Northside next week.

Running from August 17 – 23, the event will be the biggest and most popular mainstream Nige-rian outdoor event in Ireland as it brings Nigerians and many other cultures together.

Activates are designed to edu-cate and enlighten people about Nigeria and Nigerians while show-casing the rich culture and com-mercial vibrancy of the country.

The carnival is open to the pub-lic and participants can take part in the parade on Saturday, August 22 at the Plaza, Ballymun from 12 noon.

Various activities lined up for the day include hair braiding, head-gear tying, learning Nigerian dialects and drumming and danc-ing workshops.

Children can enjoy fun rides, games, face painting, story-telling and dancing.

issued in 2014 across the city and county, despite a €10,000 campaign by the councils to raise awareness of the issue.

This summer, it’s everywhere you look. It’s on our footpaths, our open spaces, our grass verges and our beaches. By extension, this means it ends up inside our homes, schools, sports clubs and workplaces.

It’s next to impossible to go anywhere these days without having to navigate a course around dog excrement. It’s not the fault of our canine friends, of course. If they have to go, they have to go.

Because there’s no such thing as bad dogs – just bad, irresponsible owners with the manners and civic mindedness of rodents.

The problem affects children and adults alike. At best, it is a messy, unpleasant experience,

particularly when you have to clean it out of the crevices of the soles of your shoes. At worst, it can have serious health implications and even lead to blindness.

While the laws are there to fine people if their dogs foul in a public place, enforcement is typically non-existent in some areas. On-the-spot fines of €150 can be issued or up to €3,000 if a conviction is secured in court. But the chances of being caught are pretty slim, as last year’s figures show.

When was the last time you saw a dog owner being reprimanded by a council official and issued with an on-the-spot fine?

It is curious that our local authorities don’t see the financial potential of policing dog fouling as they do, for instance, parking.

There’s hardly a community left in Dublin that isn’t subjected to

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

Zero tolerance is needed on dog fouling

WHEN you consider the low number of on-the-spot fines issued for dog fouling across Dublin’s four local authorities last year, you’d think we didn’t have a problem with this dis-gusting epidemic that plagues our communities.

Incredibly, only 13 fines were

DISGUSTING: the problem of dog fouling is plaguing local communities. STOCK IMAGE▪

disc parking. Much – if not all – of this revenue goes straight into the coffers of the local authorities. By extension, this helps pay for local services such as street cleaning and road maintenance.

Pay and display parking works for one simple reason – visibility. The sight of uniformed parking wardens stalking our streets is more than enough to ensure that we comply with regulations.

And more often than not, if you take a chance and don’t pay for

your parking, there is a very high probability that you’ll be caught and fined. We may not like it but it’s a clear deterrent.

Imagine if our local authorities put the same effort into the dog dirt problem. Every community in Dublin should have a uniformed dog fouling inspector on the streets on a daily basis.

The revenue generated from the fines alone would pay their wages. There would also be significant environmental and

health benefits.Irresponsible, selfish, lazy, pig

ignorant dog owners would think twice the next time their adorable mutts soil a footpath. Find them and fine them; publicly name and shame them.

I imagine there would be much public support for a zero tolerance approach to the issue of dog fouling. Put it on your list of demands when the general election candidates come calling in the months ahead.

Wait is over for our Leaving Certificate studentsNeil Fetherstonhaugh

THERE was a lot of apprehen-sion at schools around the country last week when D-Day arrived in the form of this year’s Leaving Cert results.

All those months of hard graft in the study room came down to what was on a piece of paper pe-rused nervously by anxious stu-

dents ready to learn their fate.Minister for Education and

Skills Jan O’Sullivan was first to congratulate the 57,929 Leav-ing Certificate students who re-ceived their exam results.

The minister said: “Today marks the end of a long wait for you, your families and your teachers.

“It is great that so many stu-dents have achieved grades that

reflect the dedication and effort they invested in their second lev-el education. Now you have the opportunity to decide what you would like to do next.”

Minister O’Sullivan said that while it was a very important day for everyone involved, it was also the beginning of the next stage of the young people’s lives.

“Students have many options

available to them, from the tra-ditional higher education route, to the hugely varied opportuni-ties across the further education sector,” she said.

“For anyone who may be dis-appointed with their results, I would urge them to carefully consider all of the possibilities that are open to them - every student can still achieve exactly what they want to.”

Brent speaks about mental health issuesRUGBY expert, journalist and author Brent Pope spoke eloquently about his strug-gles with mental health at an Abrivia Leaders Series break-fast at the Marker Hotel in Dublin last week.

At the breakfast meeting Brent urged employers to break the cycle of stigma around

mental health problems in the workplace.

Brent said: “We should make it almost normal for staff, including upper management, to talk comfortably about their problems.

“Your attendance here today means that you recognise that a lot of mental health problems are treatable and in fact more

normal than many think. “You are no longer alone, and

with the correct strategies in place and more attention paid to removing the stigma around mental health in the work environment, combined with empathy and support, then I am confident that many of those who experience some sort of blip on life’s journey will soon

Wage forum is welcomedTHE Dublin North West TD John Lyons (Lab) has wel-comed the announcement by Minister of State for Busi-ness and Employment, Ged Nash, that a forum will take place on September 30 to discuss the introduction of a Living Wage campaign in Ireland.

“I would like to commend my colleague, Minister Ged Nash for setting up the Living Wage Forum,” Deputy Lyons said.“It is important that employers and employees engage with one another to assess how a Living Wage can be success-fully introduced in Ireland.

“The Living Wage Technical Group has conducted exten-sive research to establish that the Living Wage rate for 2015 is €11.50.

The successful Living Wage campaign in London has shown that a Living Wage not only benefits workers but also businesses in the local com-munity.”

Gardai are cracking down on disqualified drivers.▪

Gardaí crack down on disqualified driversGARDAI have charged, on aver-age, three motorists a day since June 22 as they crack down on disqualified drivers.

In total 87 disqualified drivers have been arrested and charged since this date while a further 30 have been charged with multiple offences.

Prison sentences have also been imposed on four disquali-fied drivers since June 22 when gardaí were given new powers to arrest disqualified drivers on the spot if found driving any vehicle in a public place.

Up until this date it was not possible to arrest a disqualified driver at the time of intercep-tion and the driver would sub-sequently be made amenable by summons or charge at a later date.

However, this new power now enables gardaí around the coun-try to immediately arrest these high risk offenders, convey them to the nearest Garda station,

charge them with the specific of-fence of driving whilst disquali-fied and bring them to the earli-est available court sitting.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Do-nohoe, welcomed reports from the gardaí in their progress in dealing with people who are driving while their licence has been disqualified.

“While it is worrying that driv-ing while disqualified is happen-ing to such an extent, it is excel-

lent news that so many arrests are being made by the gardai in this area,” the minister stated.

“This was an issue that had been identified to me as need-ing attention so in June I com-menced certain sections of the Road Traffic Act 2014 giving the guards automatic power of ar-rest when they identified a driver on the roads who had a disquali-fied licence.

“In the past, those who flouted the law in this way would have been summoned to court, which may have taken many months. The gardaí are now able to deal with this sort of criminal activity in a much more immediate way, helping to keep our roads safer and ultimately saving lives.”

Chief Superintendent Mark Curran of the Garda National Traffic Bureau said it was unac-ceptable that drivers who had lost their licence either through the accumulation of penalty points or in court continued to drive.

of these disqualified drivers have many serious previous convic-tions.

“We will continue to seek out these high risk drivers, as they cannot be allowed to endanger other road users or engage in any criminal activity.”

The prison sentencesimposed to

date sends out a very clear message that should be heeded by any disqualified driver

On yer bikes!OPINION is divided on how cycle-friendly Dublin is as a city. But as the success of the Dublin Bikes Scheme has shown, cycling is continuing to grow in popularity as we embrace its health and traffic beating benefits.

In this month’s photo essay, Darren Kinsella takes a look through his camera lens at Dubliners’ love of bikes.

He explains: “When the sun is shining, cycling seems to be a no-brainer for commuting to and from work or for a leisurely spin around the city. It would be interesting to see the expressions on these same faces if the photos were taken in the middle of winter.”

the Canine Column – spotlight on Collies

get into mischief!

• Training – because they’re intelligent, Collies are often easy to train.

They always want new things to do and they like solving prob-lems. They also adore playing football.

Choosing to get a dog is a very big decision.

Watever breed you decide to get, if you do decide to get a Col-lie, make sure to check out your local rescue centre.

Collies can find kennel life stressful so they may appear a bit boisterous when you first meet them.

But their true personality will shine away from the kennel.

We have a selection of beau-tiful Collies here at Dogs Trust, of all ages so do pop by and say hello if you’ve been thinking of adopting a dog.

They are intelligent, active and loyal – but they’re not for everyone.

If you’re fit and have an ac-tive lifestyle, plenty of time and want a dog who’ll keep you chal-lenged, a Collie would be perfect for you.

The most familiar type of Col-lie is the classic black and white ‘sheepdog’, though there are many variations out there.

The main thing you’ll notice about a collie is how athletic they are.

Their physique and stamina lend themselves to being active a lot of the time and they just love taking part in agility and flyball!

Things to consider before get-ting a Collie:

• Your current lifestyle – you

need to have an energetic life-style to keep these lovely dogs happy.

• Your family situation – be-cause they are naturally high spirited, they may not be ideal for homes with young children.

• How much space you have – Collies love outdoor life, so if you have a big garden, or public spaces nearby, you could poten-tially offer a Collie a great home.

• Work-Collie-Life balance – how much time can you devote to your new dog? Collies need a lot of mental and physical stimu-lation and so are not best suited to people who are out at work all day.

They can get bored easily and

COLLIES have been around for a long time, originally as working dogs assisting shepherds.

Dublin People Newspaper Group has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for over 200 lost and abandoned dogs .

Our Dog of the Week this week is Jack, a seven-year-old Bor-der Collie cross. Jack is a typical Collie in that he’s super clever.

He’s fully toilet trained and just loves getting out for his walks with his carers here. Jack is an older dog, and would need to go to an adult only home, with no other dogs.

If you think you could offer Jack a loving home contact Dogs Trust on 01-8791000 or pop into the centre.

Every year, hundreds of people do things to raise money in aid of Dogs Trust Ireland.

These range from the popular, like having a car boot sale or bake sale, to the more unusual such as living in a kennel for 48 hours! Every cent helps and however you choose to raise funds for Dogs Trust, just remember to have fun doing it!

Face your fears for Irish Cancer Society campaign

lenge gives people an outlet to face their fear while supporting those with cancer.

Earlier this month RTÉ TV presenter Stephen Byrne was the first to take on his fear for cancer. Stephen faced his fear of spiders and spent some time with a Chilean Rose Tarantula.

Since then others have signed up with fears as diverse as jump-ing from a plane to driving in a foreign country.

According to the survey, in which 95 people took part, Irish people are most afraid of rats or mice with almost a third of par-ticipants (32 per cent) citing the vermin as their top fear.

This compared to 14 per cent of those who said spiders scared them the most.

A further quarter of Irish

people said they were afraid of heights and also thinking along the same lines were 21 per cent of participants who chose a sky-dive as their fear.

While over half of participants in the survey said they had nev-er faced their fear to date, 87 per cent said they would do so for someone they loved and 80 per cent said they were ready to be fearless.

Speaking about the campaign, Liz Logan, campaigns manager at the Irish Cancer Society, said: “We are all touched by cancer and fundamentally I think it’s a disease that we are all afraid of.

“The wider work of the soci-ety tries to take the fear out of cancer – through information, support and talking about it – no longer having it as a sub-

ject whispered about in hushed tones.

“With this campaign we are asking people to face a differ-ent kind of fear, to do something challenging, to make a sacrifice but it’s also something empow-ering, exciting and fun.”

To get involved: 1. Choose Your Challenge, 2. Set Your Fundrais-ing Goal, 3. Raise Money and 4. Complete Your Challenge.

Soak up the sun in lovely Lanzarote THINK Lanzarote and it’s easy to conjure up images of sun drenched beaches and clear blue skies, but it’s not just the year round warm temper-atures that make this a hot holiday destination.

Every year thousands of holiday mak-ers make their way to this other-worldly paradise and while topping up the tan and lazing around sipping cheap, exotic drinks is not to be sniffed at, far too many visitors miss out on all the alterna-tive ways to enjoy the island.

In an effort to broaden its attraction the local tourism board is now promoting Lanzarote’s other sides, and taking time off from pool-side activities to explore certainly pays off in spades.

At first glance the island’s barren countryside looks like a bleak, lunar landscape, but the unique rock forma-tions created by historic volcanic activity become, on closer inspection, surpris-ingly captivating.

The power of past explosions from the 300 plus now dormant volcanoes on the small island is almost tangible, and it’s easy to imagine how past civilisations would have felt compelled to worship the Fire Mountains.

The rugged topography stretches at times for as far as the eye can see, but it’s viewed at its magnificent best from along the winding roads of Timanfaya National Park.

The park’s Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) were largely created in six devastating years between 1730 and 1736 when more than 100 volcanoes un-leashed their fiery fury and spewed out tons of lava which formed a Martian-like terrain that in turn allowed rare flora to flourish – much to the delight of nature lovers today. Thankfully the area has cooled, but over 300 years later it’s still hot enough to allow tourists experience something of the volcanic energy of 18th century Lanzarote.

Visitors to Timanfaya are treated to demonstrations at the side of holes dug just beneath the surface. Dry brush thrown into the ground catches fire al-most instantaneously while a bucket of cold water erupts seconds later in the form of a mini-geyser, startling onlook-ers.

The nearby ‘El Diablo’ restaurant uses geothermal heat from a grill placed over

a large hole in the ground to cook tradi-tional dishes, giving a whole new mean-ing to eco-friendly food.

You might think Lanzarote’s rocky landscape would make most of the island uninhabitable, and for the most part you’d be right, but with a flaky imagina-tion and sheer artistic drive it’s possible to design a luxury dream home. And that’s exactly what artist and architect, César Manrique, had and did.

Manrique’s impressive list of friends and acquaintances included luminaries like Rita Hayworth, King Hussein of Jor-dan, Helmut Kohl and Andy Warhol.

He adopted Lanzarote as his home and his vision helped advance the island’s tourism industry, while protecting it from overdevelopment by campaigning for all buildings to be painted in traditional col-ours and constructed no higher than the tallest palm tree.

His legacy is best experienced at the home he build at Taro de Tahiche in 1968. This is no ordinary holiday villa but James Bond’s arch enemy, Dr No, could easily have used it as a secret, summer retreat.

The home is constructed on top of a volcanic trail from an eruption that oc-curred in 1730-36 and it uses the natural formation of five volcanic bubbles for the main rooms. Windows are carved from the inside, giving it a cave-like feel, but the lavish furnishing, avant-garde art works, funky swimming pool, party bar-becue and small dance floor make it pure swinging sixties.

Were he alive today, Manrique could stock up on wine for his celebrity guests at one of Lanzarote’s newest attractions.

Opened in 2007, the E20 million Bod-egas Stratvs winery in La Geria combines tradition and modern innovation to cre-ate a range of distinctive vino which it stocks in its gourmet shop.

Dropping by for a wine and cheese tasting session in the more than pleasant surroundings of the winery’s cafe is cer-tainly worth dragging yourself away from the beach for.

For some divine inspiration, try a drop of the Malvasia Naturalmente Dulce white, which is said to be the favourite tipple of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI.

Manrique’s influence can be experi-enced yet again at El Jardin De Cactus (Cactus Garden), which was the last Cen-

tre of Art, Culture and Tourism that he created before his untimely death in a car crash on the island in 1992.

The entrance is made of hand carved basalt and the garden’s landscape is dominated by an eight metre high, Gau-di-like cactus sculpture. On the face of it, a cactus display spread over a couple of acres might seem like the whacky notion, but the vast array of beautifully land-scaped, brightly coloured cacti show that Manrique’s idea was truly inspired.

One of the great things about Lanzar-ote is that while you’ve got the 300 days of glorious sunshine, the temperatures don’t reach the uncomfortable highs of rival destinations in Greece or Turkey. It’s also just within comfortable travel-ling distance, around four hours from Ireland.

Naturally, the beaches remain the is-land’s number one attraction and there’s over 80 to choose from, all with turquoise clear waters and plenty with wide, sandy

beaches. Most of the Irish head for Puerto Del

Carmen, which makes a great base to re-lax in and explore from.

The beach is excellent and there’s plen-ty of modern and traditional retail outlets stocked with all those tax-free goodies. There’s also lots of family-friendly café bars and restaurants in the area.

Throw in a round of golf at the nearby, freshly built Lanzarote Golf Resort and you’ve got yourself one hell of a holiday.

Green Day when I was about 12 and I still have it.

Don’t know if it still plays though. The last album I bought was The Skatalites ‘Stretching Out Volume 2’ on vinyl. I got it online with a load or other stuff for €8.

5. When you’re not playing mu-sic, what else do you do?

Unfortunately the music doesn’t pay the bills so I have a 9-5 job too. I love my motors. I have both an old school car and scooter that I tinker with from time to time. Any other free time usually revolves around alcohol consumption.

6. Who are your influences?I love all the old ska and reg-

gae artists like The Skatalites, Toots, Byron Lee, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, etc… That early stuff re-ally influences the sound of the band and our style of playing. I still do love all the later stuff like The Beat, The Specials, Madness and so on too. I love the vocal work on the Motown stuff and into some heavier stuff like Mo-torhead, The Clash, Rancid, Bad Brains, Refused, etc. some have reggae/ska influence themselves some don’t.

7. If you weren’t playing with your fellow band mates, who would make up your ideal band?

Probably the other band I play in, ‘After the Ibis’. I don’t really have one of those dream team

bands I’d love to do. I just enjoy playing with whoever I come across or am asked to join with them.

8. Any tips on life?I wish I had some wise phrase

or inspirational experience to pass on but unfortunately I’m dull and boring and have come up short. If in doubt, Google it?

9. First person you’d invite to your party?

Can’t think of anyone really but I suppose if he were still alive Phil Lynott.

10. Last person you’d invite to your party?

Any so called socialite like the Kardashians or whatever.

The 2nd Quarter Review has highlighted a 25.4% national in-crease in car sales so far in 2015 with the price of a new car down on average of 2.9 per cent. This increase has seen the Irish Ex-chequer benefit by €761million from new and used car sales since the start of the year, 3.7 per cent of the total tax taken by the State this year.

The SIMI/DoneDeal Review also highlighted the key contri-bution of the Motor Industry in relation to job creation with 13.6 per cent of all new jobs in Ireland

in the past 12 months being cre-ated across the Motor Industry. Over 5,600 new jobs have been created in the Industry since June 2014.

The cost of motoring in gener-al has decreased notwithstand-ing the fact that motor insurance costs have increased by 15.7 per cent since June 2014.

Damien English, Minister of State at the Departments of Education and Skills & the De-partment of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation with Special Re-sponsibility for Skills, Research and Innovation, who launched the 2nd Quarter Motor Industry Review, said: “The Motor Indus-try plays a key role in providing employment across the country in both rural and urban areas. I am greatly encouraged by the growth in employment across

the Industry in the last year and in particular I am delighted at the Motor Industry’s commit-

ment to employing and training young people via the apprentice-ship system.”

SE Business prices start at €77,375 featuring additional lux-ury features such as virtual cock-pit. S Line additional equipment includes LED headlights, with pricing starting at €79,875.

With Audi’s “ultra” engine technology, the Q7 is 26% more efficient.

The 3.0TDI 218 quattro variant consumes on average just 5.7 li-tres of fuel per 100 kilometres, or 149 grams of CO2 per kilometre. More grip, increased traction and enhanced driving performance are delivered through Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive technology, stand-ard across the en-tire Q7 range.

The all-new Q7’s spacious interior in-cludes seven seats as stand-ard—with 770 litres of luggage room. With only the front seats occupied, the new Q7 provides a massive 1,955 litres of storage space.

Powered opening and closing tailgate ensures easier access.

The second row seats benefit from a tilt-and-fold function, and the two third row seats can be easily stowed away using a pow-ered folding mechanism.

The all-new Q7 offers a cutting-edge technological interface via the MMI navigation plus system through an 8.3-inch retractable TFT display on the dash.

Audi’s much acclaimed virtual cockpit screen is standard on SE Business and S-Line lines.

Dublin car sales up over 19 per cent for 2015THE Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released their 2nd Quarter SIMI Motor Industry Review in association with DoneDeal.

The figures have shown that car sales in Dublin have in-creased by 19.1 per cent for the first half of 2015 to end of June, compared with the first half of 2014. The Review revealed that 32,212 cars have been sold in the county so far this year compared with just 25,127 for the same pe-riod last year.

Mark Boggan, President of SIMI, said: “The figures so far this year have been a massive boost to the industry in Dublin and the dual plate has again shown it’s worth to the industry with the July figures. The dual plate has given the industry a means to structure their business better as we continue the move towards a

more stable economy. These fig-ures will mean the Motor Indus-try continues to create employ-ment and boost the economy in the area.”

The July national figures were also announced at the launch of the SIMI/DoneDeal 2nd Quarter Motor Industry Review, which was compiled by Economist Jim Power. The July 2015 figures for Dublin were up 42.1 per cent on July 2014, with 12,128 cars being sold last month.

The ‘152’ national sales fig-ures for July are up 48 per cent (27,633) compared to (18,711) July 2014 and are currently up 30 per cent (109,960) for the first half of 2015. Light Commercial Vehicles

the famous three pointed star on the bonnet, just the Mercedes logo. I like the pointed star, but there is always the worry that some ruffian will break it off for devilment.

Inside the dash is dominated by the infotainment screen where you can enjoy yourself scrolling through the various radio sta-tions that pop up on your screen. I have often said before that the cruise control lever Mercedes use is one of the simplest and best in the business. It will take you a day or two to familiarise yourself with the location of the cruise control, indicator and gear selec-tion levers.

A walnut trim coupled with an old style clock rounds off a classy-looking interior.

In the back there is ample room for three well-built adults.

The boot is massive and there is space for a spare wheel, but once again only the dreaded repair kit is provided. My colleagues in the Irish motoring press are not happy with this trend, but they do point out that you can get a good deal on a spare wheel if you are buying one when you buy a new car.

I drove an Estate version and I

have rarely seen back seats that fold down so quickly at the touch of a switch.

The fuel tank is not huge but even allowing for that this motor was certainly a bit heavy on die-sel. One day I sitting waiting for my daughter and as I sat there I could see the fuel range on the dash drop down one kilometre every few minutes!

Prices for the 1.6 diesel start at €47,520 and to be fair there is huge amount of goodies included as standard equipment, goodies like collision prevention assist, reversing camera, cruise control etc.

Mercedes C Class Estate is a true Tiger economy motor

When I was younger I always associated gold watches and Mer-cedes with retirement. Now many people get their time from their mobile phones, but I suppose a Mercedes car is still something to aim for in life and for some the famous car comes long before retirement.

We are told that the C-Class is Mercedes’ biggest seller world-wide and accounts for around 20 per cent of total sales. There is a huge range of cars in the Mer-cedes range and every function we attend at Mercedes event we are told that they are trying to

recruit more young people to the brand, not retirees.

Recently I drove an Estate ver-sion of the C-Class and it was class. My test model was au-tomatic which made for some relaxing driving, but it was a bit thirsty as we will see later.

During the week I had the car I made my first-ever visit to the Galway Races and we literally cruised down the motorway. The C-Class certainly looked the part in the spacious car park in Bal-lybrit.

The grill of it all: A GOOD barbecue can provide some of the best craic during the summer months and we certainly don’t need much encourage-ment to fire up the grill and text out the invites.

As soon as there’s a break in the clouds we’re dreaming about laz-ing around the garden in blazing sunshine with a few pals while the burgers and sausages gently sizzle away in the background.

The problem is we don’t get enough practice here in Ireland and sometimes we end up scoff-ing down half-cooked or burnt-to-a-crisp clumps of meat under the back door porch during a down-pour.

It’s all down to planning and preparation. It might feel like a great idea to nip down to the lo-cal convenience store as soon as the sun starts shining but the best barbies are well thought out af-fairs, with a few allowances made for the weather.

Follow these tips and you won’t go far wrong.

• Do as much preparation as you can the day before your barbecue. Make the marinades and marinate the meat or poultry. Make the side

dishes and prepare a simple des-sert that just needs finishing off on the day.

• Pick your BBQ spot carefully. Avoid windy locations and allow plenty of space around the barbe-cue. Remember to keep the grill away from plants, fences or sheds that may scorch or catch light.

• Have everything to hand when barbecuing. Place all the things you’ll be using on a side table next to the barbecue to eliminate unnecessary trips to the kitchen. Keep all your barbecuing tools nearby - tongs, chopping boards, insulated gloves, bating brushes etc - and always make sure they are thoroughly cleaned and dried before putting away.

• Always use long-handled tools, such as tongs, for handling the food. Don’t use the same tools for raw and cooked foods to pre-vent cross-contamination.

• Always store raw foods in a covered container, out of the

bright sunshine and inside the house if it is a hot day. Invest in a cool box for convenience.

• It’s essential to properly mari-nate the meat, fish, or poultry before it hits the grill. Marinades ensure flavour and help with ten-derising. Give them at least 20 minutes to start working and for some foods, like red meats, pork or poultry, you may want to mari-nate overnight.

• Fish requires only about 20-30 minutes marinating time before cooking because the acid in the marinade will ‘cook’ the fish if left on overnight.

• Remove meat and poultry from the fridge an hour before cooking and leave covered in a cool kitchen or garage until required. This will help bring the food back to an ambient temperature, and will result in a more succulent cooked result rather than a charred, dried offering.

• Cook in foil. It’s ideal for cooking foods that can easily fall apart, stick or burn, like fish. Tear

off a sheet of foil, brush with oil, add the fish fillet skin side down, salt and pepper, a squeeze of lem-on and a splash of white wine. Seal it by folding together the corners and then barbecue for about three minutes on each side.

• Pork, s a u s a g e s , burgers and chicken. in particular, must al-

ways be cooked through to the centre. It might look cooked on the outside but can still be raw in the middle. Check by piercing the thickest part with the point of a sharp knife. If the juices run clear then the meat is ready. Any sign of pink juices and it needs more time.

• Complement your meal with side dishes. Baked potatoes are an easy-to-prepare favourite as are baby potatoes in herbs and butter.

• Impress guests with a super

salad. Depending on your taste, ingredients such as blue cheese, goat’s cheese, avocado, ginger, beetroot, olives, red onion, fresh herbs, pasta, broccoli, crispy ba-con, nuts, parmesan and fruits can be used as well as the more tradi-tional lettuce, tomato, onion and cucumber.

• Clean charcoal barbecues af-ter each use. Once the grill has cooled down use a wire brush and warm soapy water to clean it up. Gas barbecues can be cleaned by simply burning off the grill for 10

minutes.• Remember BBQs can be dan-

gerous, the grill is very hot and can cause nasty burns or even serious fires if knocked over. Keep children and animals well away.

• To get professional looking ‘cross-hatch’ grill-lines, sear the meat or vegetables on the high-est heat setting at right angles to grill bars. Remove and lightly wipe with oil and turn and repeat. Once both sides are seared, turn length-wise to grill bars and repeat the process.

Senator Gerard Craughwell believes there’s ample anecdotal evidence to suggest that many children are carrying bags up to 50 per cent of their body weight when the recommended guidelines suggest 10-15 per cent.

“There’s a worrying increase in reported cases of back related injuries in children and teenagers, including scoliosis, with many children at risk of long-term and permanent damage to their still developing spines,” he said.

Speaking at a Seanad Commencement Debate ,

Senator Craughwell called for research on every aspect of the weights that children are carrying to school each day to be commissioned.

“The research must go beyond books and must examine the sports equipment, musical instruments and other items being carried to support extracurricular,” he added.

Senator Craughwell agreed that the topic is not new and neither is it specific to Ireland. However, he added that no effective solution to the problem has been identified or introduced.

“It is an issue which has effectively fallen between stools with the Department deferring to the schools and the schools

putting the responsibility back onto parents,” he said.

The schoolbag weight issue was first raised in 1997 when then Minister of Education, Micheál Martin, established a working group on the weight of schoolbags.

The group reported back in 1998 with a list of recommendations.

The Department responded by sending out a circular letter to both primary and secondary schools advising them of the report’s recommendations - but it put the responsibility for implementing them onto school authorities.

The circular was re-issued to schools again in 2005. Senator Craughwell said that it was “a scandal” that there had been no evaluation of what measures had been taken by schools in the last 17 years, despite numerous Parliamentary Questions in the Dáil.

“The lack of action to deal with this issue has the potential to open the door to compensation claims of massive proportions,” he warned.

UNICEF and Education International are inviting teachers in Ireland to participate in teaching ‘The World’s Largest Lesson’ during the week of September 27.

All around the world, teachers will be taking part in the initiative to communicate the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations to their students.

These new Sustainable Development Goals will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of targets to focus international development efforts around eight key issues for the years 2000-2015.

The primary aim of these goals was to halve extreme poverty by 2015. This target was met in 2010.

The MDGs led to unprecedented global action and have resulted in extraordinary progress in areas like primary education, infant mortality, access to clean drinking water and the battle against HIV/AIDS and malaria.

The SDGs will be launched on September 25 and are based on eight key themes: poverty;

health and wellbeing; education, skills and jobs; a just world; sustainability; the environment and global consciousness.

“As the people most affected by them, it is critical that young people are aware of the SDGs and are part of the process to achieve them,” a spokesperson said.

“Education International and UNICEF is asking teachers from around the world to teach a lesson

about the new SDG during the week of September 27 and ensure that your students are aware of the goals and can begin to contribute to their achievement.”

To find out more about how to teach students about the Sustainable Development Goals and to access lesson plans on the SDGs shared by teachers from all over the world, visit www.tes.co.uk/worldslargestlesson/

When asked what item respondents couldn’t go abroad without, the adaptor for their mobile phone charger came out on top followed by holiday
