It’s war on litter louts!
Neil Fetherstonhaugh
lITTeR louts in the North Inner City have been warned they will be the focus of a new dublin City Council anti-litter campaign that aims to take on the serious problem of illegal dumping in the area.
The council is calling on all citizens in the city, and in particular, locals in the North Inner City, to report illegal dumping via a special confidential Litter Hotline
which has been made available (1800 251500) or online at www.fixyourstreet.ie
The council is also asking locals to take pride in their area and play their part in keeping their community clean by reporting illegal dumping.
Speaking at the launch of the new initiative at Smithfield Plaza, Cllr Críona Ní Dhálaigh said the council is now very proactive in tackling what has been described as a crisis.

“We are prosecuting those who dump illegally on our streets and we are also prosecuting the householders that have no legal waste disposal arrangements in place,” she said.
“We will do all we can to ensure that the North Inner City is no longer a litter black spot.
“I would encourage everyone to share this civic responsibility and report illegal dumping by calling our litter hotline in confidence.
“As the Irish proverb says
‘Ar Scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine’ (People live in each other’s shadows) so be proud of your neighbourhood and your community and help us to keep the North Inner City clean from litter.”
The campaign follows the latest IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) report which declared that certain areas in the North Inner City continue to be seriously littered with the area ranked 39th out of 40th nationwide in respect of cleanliness.
As a result Dublin City Council is intensifying its anti-litter

Council, said the fleet underlines show the council has made a significant investment towards street cleaning in the city.
“Street cleaning is a shared responsibility and we are asking people to help us tackle the significant litter crisis in our North Inner City by reporting illegal dumping,” he said. “Our Waste Management Division devotes significant resources towards street cleaning in the North Inner City every day. The cost of dealing with illegal dumping last year was €670,000.”
The campaign has seen 579 household visits in the area to ensure that waste disposal arrangements are in place. Advisory notices have been issued to non compliant households resulting in 55 per cent of those households having waste disposal arrangements in place.
Dublin City Council’s Green Schools Officer has visited local schools to educate students about litter prevention. The team has also met with voluntary groups in the area to inform
them of the campaign and seek their assistance with the Adopt a Street initiative in the North Inner City area.
This has resulted in a number of streets being adopted by local voluntary and community groups. Some traffic signal boxes in the area have also been painted under the Traffic Box Art Project to make them more attractive.

campaign this year in an effort to deal with the serious problem of illegal dumping in parts of the North Inner City.
The campaign to #keepdublinclean is promoting a zero tolerance approach to illegal littering, in particular the dumping of untagged bags on public streets.
“Streets where illegal dumping is a particular problem are being targeted and our ‘Clean Dublin Team’ litter wardens are calling door to door to ensure households have waste disposal arrangements in place,” a spokesperson stated. “CCTV monitoring has been installed and additional signage has been placed in black spot areas advising on the correct waste collection day. Owners of properties
suspected of illegal dumping are being identified through property and title searches.”
The launch last week also featured the council’s new street sweeping fleet.

Activists call for additional investment in mental healthNeil Fetherstonhaugh
VOLUNTEERS from the Finglas Mental Health Support Group joined others from the Gateway Mental Health Association in Rathmines and the Suaimhneas Clubhouse in Coolock at a dem-onstration outside Leinster House last week.
The mental health activists gathered at the gates to say “in-vest in our mental health” as part of a new campaign for mental health funding in Budget 2016.
The campaign is calling on the Government to provide a mini-mum of €35 million additional funding for mental health serv-ices.
The public are asked to sign the petition on www.mentalheal-threform.ie
Speaking at the campaign launch, Shari McDaid, Director of Mental Health Reform (MHR), said: “Time is running out for this Government to honour its Pro-gramme for Government com-mitment on mental health sup-ports in Ireland.
“With seven weeks until Budg-et Day in October, we are calling for at least €35 million in Budget 2016 towards the improvement
of comprehensive, community based mental health services.
“Despite some recent invest-ment and developments, mental health funding still falls far short of what is needed. Staffing in May of this year was still 22 per cent below recommended levels and services are struggling to cope with staff shortages.”
Dr McDaid added: “Govern-ment departments responsible for housing and social welfare must also put money into sup-ports specifically for people with mental health difficulties.
“Secure housing is vital to mental wellbeing and the De-partment of Environment & Local Government must fund housing and related social supports for people recovering from a mental health difficulty.
“We estimate that 600 people could transition from HSE sup-
ported accommodation to main-stream community living with the right social support.
“Similarly, if the Department of Social Protection restored the Back to Work Allowance this could support people with men-tal health disabilities to return to work.”
Dr McDaid said that they had heard from people with mental health difficulties and their fam-ily members about gaps in men-tal health services.
Mental Health Reform is a na-tional coalition that is dedicated to improving mental health serv-ices.

LAST week I stumbled upon a robbery at a petrol station.
I was refuelling the car when I heard a loud thud, followed by aggressive shout-ing. Two thugs had threatened the staff before stealing alcohol and attempting to smash a window with a fire extin-guisher.
My youngest son was just about to go into the garage shop when my wife told him to get back in the car.
The thieves sauntered casually across the forecourt, taunting the hapless staff member who followed them outside. They flaunted the stolen booze for all to see. There was no getaway car waiting for them; they simply walked away with
no sense of fear or urgency. An employee I spoke to afterwards
seemed unshaken by the incident and speculated that the culprits were prob-ably “off their heads”. Despite his calm demeanour, it must have been a fright-ening experience for him and his col-leagues.
The conversation on the journey home was peppered with searching questions. This was the first time in their young lives that my kids had been exposed to a real life crime, trivial as it may have been.
Why were the bad men shouting? What did they throw at the window? Why did they steal? Would they go to jail?
In the overall scheme of things, it could have been a lot worse. There could have been knives or guns involved. I could have strayed directly into their path as they made their escape, putting myself at risk of being attacked. My family could have been in the shop at the time.
We tried to explain to the children that some people steal to feed their addiction to drugs; that they often come from very difficult backgrounds and may have had a tough childhood.
I’ve no way of knowing if any of the above motivated the robbery that day. But the way they laughed and sneered at the staff troubled me, as if this audacious act was something they had carried out
with impunity many times before.Despite what we told our kids, I per-
sonally don’t believe that a socially de-prived background in itself is enough to justify criminal activity. At times it can
be hard to escape the uncomfortable notion that some people are simply born bad.
Worryingly, when I checked with the Garda Press Office, they were unable to
find any record of the incident. If it’s the case that it was neither reported nor re-corded, it makes you wonder if we are getting the full picture when crime sta-tistics are published.

The grate that marks the meeting of the Poddle and the Liffey. ▪
Remembering the secret river
harbour for their long boats. Although today the Poddle is largely
overlooked, the river has survived in popular folk memory.
You might be surprised to learn that the song, ‘Weila Weilia Wailla’, made fa-mous by ‘The Dubliners’, could be set by banks of the Poddle, ‘Down by the River Saile’. The River Saile in this case is be-lieved to be an anglicised corruption of the Irish word ‘Salach’, once a popular nickname for the Poddle that translates as ‘the dirty river’.
THE origins of Dublin are tied to the stories of two great rivers. One is the majestic Liffey, where both the Gaelic settlement of Áth Cliath and later the walled city of Dublin grew on the banks.
The second is the River Poddle, which has been long forgotten and overlooked, despite the fact that this secret river gave Dublin its name.
Long before Dublin became the thriv-ing metropolis we know today, there was a deep tidal pool on the Poddle, close to its confluence or meeting with the Liffey.
This pool, known as the Black Pool or Dubh Linn in Irish, stood roughly where the landscaped gardens of Dublin Cas-tle now stand. The name Dubh Linn was later anglicised as Dublin.
While Dublin now boasts international
This great river was also the scene for one of the most daring prison escapes in Irish history. On January 6, 1592, the fa-mous Red Hugh O’Donnell, along with his comrade Art O’Neill, escaped from im-prisonment in Dublin Castle by climbing into a drain that gave access to the Pod-dle ensuring their escape to the Wicklow Mountains.
With such a proud history, it is hardly surprising that the Poddle has refused to be confined to its manmade under-ground prison.
Throughout Dublin’s history the river has been known to break free and cause extensive flooding in the south inner city. The threat posed by the Poddle was once so severe at St Patrick’s Cathedral, that the graves of Jonathan Swift and Stella were moved to avoid its flooding waters.
The River Poddle has been part of the story of our city since the beginning. Instead of overlooking it, the Poddle should have pride of place and all Dub-liners should celebrate its great history and charm.
Daithí Ó Riain
renown, the Poddle has become a foot-note of its story.
To understand how such an important river has been forgotten, we must take a look at its history.
The Poddle begins its life as the Tymon River, rising at Cookstown in Tallaght. Its course flows through Tymon North, Tem-pleogue, Greenhills and Kimmage before dividing into two parts at ‘The Tongue’ in Harold’s Cross.
The river later recombines and its lat-ter stages have been extensively culvert-ed, meaning the Poddle flows through hidden manmade tunnels under much of Dublin’s south west inner city.
The final course of the Poddle flows through a large brick tunnel under Dublin Castle and the surrounding streets, be-fore entering the Liffey through a grate, close to the Clarence Hotel on Wellington Quay. Although access to this section of the Poddle is difficult, it is possible to navigate these secret tunnels.
Sadly, the grate which marks the his-toric confluence of the Poddle and the Liffey is now only visible at low tide, and this, along with the extensive culverting of this once great river, is the reason it has been forgotten.
But the Poddle deserves to be recog-nised. Its Black Pool was an area of major strategic importance in early Dublin.
Some of the earliest Viking settlers built their Dublin encampment close to its banks and used ‘An Dubh Linn’ as a

Is it Tinnitus?
This condition is called “Tinnitus”. In years
gone by it was called “The Death Bell”. In
both the Welsh & Irish language, Tinnitus was
translated as “The Death Bell”. This gave
rise to allot of superstition surrounding this
neurological problem, in fact Tinnitus comes
from the Latin for ringing!
In many cases people who visit their G.P. with
this complaint are told there is no cure or it’s
in their head! This statement seems to rule out
any hope of relief from this relentless irritation.
But that’s not the case.
Sufferers are never advised by their healthcare

Vogue Williams launches new range of car accessories for dogs
the Cross-Partition Grill, which sits directly behind the rear headrests, allowing your pet to sit safely in the boot without the risk of them jumping into the backseat for a cuddle. The lattice design ensures that the driver has a clear driving view as well as always having sight of the pet, making sure they always feel like part of the family.
Recent research from Dogs Trust Ireland found that 36% of Irish households have one or more dogs and it is estimated that there are around 750,000 pet dogs in Ireland.
Speaking about the new product range, Raymond Leddy of Škoda said: “We have been proud vehicle partners to Dogs Trust for the past three years and are delighted that we can help them to conduct their amaz-ing work. We’re big dog lovers at Škoda and understand what a
huge part of the family they are, so we’re delighted to introduce
the new range which will also al-low people to bring their pets on
trips with them, feeling safe and secure.”
As long-term partners of Dogs Trust Ireland, Škoda are keen to create the highest level of safety for all of their passengers. The new doggy seatbelt comes in four sizes, and can be used in combi-nation with a leash. It prevents dogs from moving around within the car, which may be distract-ing for drivers, and also ensures that dogs are safely secured in the event of an accident.
Also available as part of the range is a practical backseat protector, to ensure the uphol-stery stays clean when your pet travels with you, while the non-slip water-resistant material en-sures your pet is completely safe while the car is moving.
Speaking at the launch, Vogue
said: “I love being active and being able to bring my dog Win-ston along to explore new walk-ing routes and trails around the country. The Škoda doggy seat-belt is so convenient and means I can strap him in safely so he doesn’t have to miss out on any road trips. The back seat cover is also amazing for keeping the boot clean and dry if Winston has been in for a swim.”
In addition to the dog seatbelt and backseat protector, a divider grill is available for the boot of estate models, which allows you to split your boot into two sec-tions; one for your dog and one for your luggage - perfect for family trips or staycations.

Gaa team celebrates losing… weight, that is
Jillian’s passion for Slimming World led to her becoming an in-spirational consultant. She now runs two groups on a Monday and Thursday in the Santry and Beaumont areas.
Having a fellow team mem-ber as a mentor for weight loss rubbed off on the other players, and proved particularly success-ful for Aideen Canning.
Aideen, a seasoned Gaelic player, and mother to two chil-dren, had suffered with ankle problems and had to stop playing. Aideen, inspired by other team members’ weight loss success, joined Jillian’s Thursday group. Within 10 months she dropped a staggering three dresses sizes and a total of four stone and six and a half pounds.
Aideen still enjoyed her wine at the weekends and incorporat-ed the huge range of unlimited
foods into every meal, ensuring she was never hungry.
Her fellow members voted her as a finalist in the group’s recent ’Woman of the Year 2015’ event, and at a recent GAA blitz in Castleknock, Aideen became Whitehall GAA for Mas’ Greatest Loser for 2015.
‘Whitehall GAA for Mas’ suc-cess might not always be reflect-ed on the scoreboard but can be certainly measured in their vari-ous weight loss victories.
If you’re interested in joining and its does require you to have children in the club, visit www.whitehallcolmcille.ie or via the Facebook page and they would be delighted to have you join their team.
Meanwhile, for more informa-tion on Slimming World groups all over Dublin, visit www.slim-mingworld.ie
‘Whitehall GAA for Mas’ was established to get more mothers involved with the local club and community, and training once a week with valued mentors to gently improve their skill and fit-ness.
Over the course of the past 18 months, 22 of the players have achieved a record-breaking weight loss of 38 stone and five pounds.
With a minimum weight loss of one stone per person it is indeed a fantastic victory in the weight battle for these ‘Slimmer Win-ners’.
As part of the GAA’s Gaelic for Mothers’ initiative, ‘Whitehall GAA for Mas’ have already played at Croke Park twice, on All-Ireland Women’s Football Final day.
It was this team spirit and re-
newed confidence that encour-aged a number of players to lose weight and join their local slim-ming club, in the Santry-Kilmore and Beaumont areas.
Jillian Jones, one of the play-ers, who is now a Slimming World consultant, led the way.
Jillian, a mother to three chil-dren, joined ‘Whitehall GAA for Mas’ and the new zest for want-ing to be part of a team.
Coupled with suffering from Polycystic ovarian syndrome, it gave Jillian the encouragement she needed to lose the weight and seek support from her new team members and Slimming World.
Within 18 months of eating fabulous food, enjoying her fa-vourtie meals like shepherd’s pie and taco fries, Jillian achieved her target weight.
A local GAA team loves to celebrate losing – weight that is!

Maggie would really like to meet her soul mate who will make her feel comfortable and secure and know she’ll never have to live in a ken-nel again. Maggie is a beautiful older lady looking for a quiet home to call her own. Maggie needs an adult only home with few visitors.
She would love to live in a quiet area where the noise, hustle and bustle of daily life won’t worry her. Maggie needs to be the only dog in the home but has previously lived with cats. If you think you could offer Maggie her forever home, please contact Dogs Trust on 01 879 1000.
Microchipping – it’s now the law!DOGS TRUST CANINE COLUmN
All dogs must be micro-chipped by next year.▪
Ciara McGowan
mICROCHIPPING your dog is so important, we can’t stress that enough! It is a quick and simple process that is relatively pain-less for your dog, and can save a lot of heartbreak if your pet was to become lost.
A microchip is the size of a grain of rice, and is implanted by a vet or vet nurse using a specially designed needle. It takes the same amount of time as it would for your dog to get one of its vaccinations.
After the microchip is implanted, the owner then registers his/her details on a Government approved database, such as Fido (www.fido.ie). Each chip has its own unique code, under which the owner’s details will be saved on the database. If your dog is found straying, and brought to a vet practice, animal rescue or local pound it will be scanned by the official and if microchipped, the details can be looked up and hopefully the dog will be reunited quickly
with its owner. Earlier this year, the Government announced that from March 31, 2016, ALL dogs in Ireland must be microchipped. From September 1, 2015, all puppies must be microchipped and registered with a Government approved database by the time they reach 12 weeks old, or before they are moved from their birth home.
It will be illegal to buy or take ownership of a pup that is not microchipped and registered, and that does not have a certificate to prove this. You must inform a Government approved database when you buy, sell, take ownership or transfer ownership of a dog.
If you already have a dog, and you’re wondering how this
new law might affect you, you will need to make sure that the dog is microchipped and registered on a Government approved database by March 31, 2016.
The database to which you register your dog will provide you with a certificate to prove the dog is microchipped and registered. You must keep your contact details up to date. This is so important. Please notify the database of any change of address or phone number. Dogs Trust is excited to be supporting a Nationwide Microchipping awareness campaign and will be running microchipping promotions during the month of September both at their Rehoming Centre in Dublin 11 and also through a network of participating vets around Ireland.

Classes for dance loversTHE Marian Lennon School of Ballet is a long established dance school that has been running at St Francis Xavier School in Blanchardstown for 25 years and at the Inchicore Community Sports Centre for two years.
All the teachers are fully quali-fied with the Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. The stu-dents are taught classical ballet and modern dance and have the opportunity to enter examina-
tions in both dance genres. They have the chance to take
part in the school’s annual cho-reography competition and the visiting dance workshops.
In March 2016, the ballet school will present ‘An Evening of Dance’ at the Draíocht Theatre in Blanchardstown.
Over the past 25 years, the Marian Lennon School of Ballet has aspired to teach children the enjoyment and love of dance. In fact, many of their past pupils have gone on to have a profes-sional career in dance.
Bullying needs to be tackled head-onMOST students heading back to school or college are looking forward to the experience. But for a few the new term signals a return to a living nightmare.
These are the victims of bully-ing and for them school has be-come a place of terror.
Bullying can happen anywhere, to anybody and in any school or college.
Any child or teenager can fall foul of cruel and sometimes frightening behaviour inflicted by other students.
Parents who discover their child is a victim often react with anger while the family of the bully are usually ashamed and embarrassed by the behaviour.
But rage and guilt are not the way to tackle bullying. A cool head is needed. Losing tempers or hiding from the problem usu-ally only makes things worse.
Understanding the problem is the first step to prevention.
Bullying can be defined as deliberately hurtful behaviour, repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those be-ing bullied to defend themselves.
There are many types of bul-lying, and all of them can have a distressing effect on the victim.
Verbal bullying leaves students feeling angry, frightened and powerless. The attacks are often personal with abuse directed at family, physical features or social status.
The verbal bully also uses ru-mours as a weapon, turning the student’s peers against him or her.
Physical bullying, especially with boys, is often dismissed as ‘play-acting’. It may start out as a ‘game’ but left unchecked it can develop into ongoing, violent as-saults.
Younger children can some-times find themselves victims of the extortion bully. Demands for money, possessions or even lunch can be made.
Sometimes the victim will be forced to steal from home in an effort to pay off the bully but, of course, this only leads to further
Bullying can happen at any age. PIC POSED▪
demands. All of these types of bullying
are obvious but there are other, more insidious ways for the bully to impose power over the victim.
Giving ‘the finger’ or even glar-ing can convey a message of ter-ror to a victim.
Isolating the victim is another way a bully can intimidate. Vic-tims can suddenly find them-selves shunned by former friends who have been warned away.
These days, mobile phones are being used for bullying. Threat-ening text messages or mysteri-ous calls at all times of the day can strike fear into victims.
Childline has reported a huge increase in mobile phone bullying and the arrival of video phones has brought a new dimension of terror – ‘happy slapping’.
This craze involves victims being targeted by gangs and ‘slapped’. However, the ‘slap-ping’ can take the form of a vio-lent assault which is recorded on a video phone.
The attack is then often up-loaded onto sites like YouTube
and shared, adding to the humili-ation of the victim.
The best strategy in tackling all forms of bullying is prevention. All schools have a bullying policy and are happy to give a copy to parents or students.
You could also ask your school or college if they could run an awareness campaign to increase understanding of the problem.
If your child is the victim of a bully you need to encourage them to talk about it. It’s common for parents to tell younger children not to ‘tell tales’ but this can lead to confusion when it comes to re-porting bullying behaviour.
Talk to your child’s teacher and discuss solutions. However angry you may feel, never confront the bully yourself. This usually makes the situation worse.
While the parents of victims are often devastated when they learn that their child is being bul-lied, the parents of the bully can also be badly affected.
If you discover that your child is engaged in bullying behaviour, talk to them. Let them know what they are doing is unacceptable and is making other children un-happy.
Sometimes the child needs to be taught how to interact with others without resorting to bully-ing. Make an appointment to see your child’s teacher and explain the problems to see if you can both come up with a solution.
Remember, it’s important to give your child lots of praise and encouragement when they are cooperative or kind to other peo-ple.
Parents need to lead by exam-ple. Avoid inconsistent discipline and power-assertive methods of controlling behaviour.
Try to exercise democracy in the home; give the kids respon-sibilities.
Bullying can be defined as deliberately
hurtful behaviour, repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those be-ing bullied to defend themselves.

Finding the time to learnADULT students have unique pressures on their time. They’re often juggling family or work com-mitments in between classes.
Chances are that at some point during the term, you’ll find yourself complaining about the workload.
You may even find yourself complaining that you don’t seem to be making the best use of your time. The following tips can help put things back on track.
1) HonesTLy DeTermine if yoU Are pUTTing enoUgH Time inTo yoUr sTUDying:
• Try keeping track of your time for one entire week. Account for every half hour by filling in your schedule every few hours.
Add up totals for sleep, studying, and recreation. See where most of your time is being spent and if there are any changes that you need to make.
• The average amount of sleep we get is 50 - 60 hours per week. Students who are sleep-deprived generally have lower marks than students who are getting enough sleep.
• The average amount of study is one hour of homework for every hour in class plus overtime for studying. This varies from one course and pro-gramme to another, and mature and part-time stu-dents may need twice these hours for homework.
Find a balance, without being too hard on yourself.
2) Try pLAnning yoUr scHeDULe in ADvAnce. Plan your schedule to whatever degree you
are most comfortable with. Adjust your hours to desired totals. Make clear contracts with yourself regarding time, place, and study task.
3) WriTe Long AnD sHorT Term goALs DoWn:Write everything down, don’t leave things to
your memory. Write your long term goals (course requirements) on a calendar, short term goals (weekly requirements) in your schedule and daily goals (errands) on a ‘to do’ list. Time management is about goals. You need to clarify them, set them, assess them and also develop methods for meeting them.
4) Do yoUr mosT DifficULT Work WHen yoUHAve THe mosT energy:
This will make you more efficient. Most of us have a period of high energy time during the day, with two periods of medium energy and one of low energy. Find these times for yourself and work with them. Complete difficult work during high time and easier work during lower times. By saving pleasant tasks for less productive times of the day you’ll find that you will be more productive and not everything will seem like a chore.

DUNBOYNE College of Further Education is now in its 12th year. In September 2015, it opens its doors for its first academic year as a standalone college under the Louth and Meath Education training board (LMETB).
The college has grown from its original 40 students in 2003 to over 450 at its campus in Dun-boyne Business Park. Each year over 1,600 applicants apply to the college for a wide range of cours-es. Unfortunately, a cap on PLC numbers nationally has meant the college has had to turn away hundreds of potential students each year.
The very successful original courses in nursing, social studies, art, business and pre-university arts programmes have been com-plemented by students now also studying childcare/special needs assistant, pre-university science, sports science, professional cook-ery, multimedia, sound engineer-ing, music, healthcare and sports management.
The college also runs second-year Level 6 programmes in as-sorted areas, including childcare, multimedia, sports and social studies.
There are now a whole range of places available to Dunboyne Col-lege graduates in certificate and degree courses in NUI Maynooth, DCU, IT Blanchardstown, UCD, Dundalk, Trinity and with many other institutions around the country through the QQI/FETAC Links Scheme.
There is still time to apply for
some courses. Late applications will be taken until September depending on availability on the courses. School leavers, mature students, lifelong learners and those who want further opportu-nities to progress in their jobs will all benefit from these QQI pro-grammes in Dunboyne.
Many of those who attend Dun-
boyne College are Leaving Cert students, primarily from 25 local secondary schools in Meath, Dub-lin and Kildare. But students come from over 60 different secondary schools throughout Leinster and sometimes further afield to the college.
About 25 per cent of course par-ticipants are mature students who
are taking advantage of a second chance at education or to change a career. Many unemployed peo-ple have come to Dunboyne Col-lege to successfully upskill and are now in the workforce.
Dunboyne College has become a centre of excellence in the area and has integrated school leavers, mature students and non-national
students. The college has continually de-
veloped new programmes in con-junction with business, industry and third levels needs.

Kids lifting heavy loads
IT’S estimated that children carry as much as 20 per cent of their body weight in bags laden down with books and school equipment.
A heavily weighed bag or one that’s not carried correctly may injure muscles and joints which can lead to severe back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems.
So while your child or teenager may be looking for a stylish bag it’s important to ensure that it’s up to the job.
Look for a bag with wide, padded shoulder straps. Narrow straps can dig into shoulders causing pain and restricting circulation and make it tempting for the child to carry the bag incorrectly.
Choose a bag with a padded back too. This protects against sharp objects and increases comfort.
Research suggests weight limits for bags based on age. A limit of 3.7 kg is recommended for 12-year-olds while 17-year-old boys should keep below 6.2kgs and girls of the same age are suggested not to carry more than 5.5 kg. Local conditions and distance to and from school should also be taken into account.
Remind your child to always use both shoulder straps as slinging a bag over one shoulder can increase curvature of the spine.
Most bags come with several compartments so use them to help distribute the weight evenly. Pack heavier items closest to the centre of the back.
Rolling bags are a good idea for children and teenagers who must carry a heavy load. But remember they still have to carried up the stairs and they aren’t much use in the snow.
ChooSe The rIghT baCkpaCk - Look for ThefoLLowIng:
• Wide, padded shoulder straps
• Two shoulder straps – backpacks with one shoulder strap that runs across the body cannot distribute weight evenly
• Padded back
• Waist strap – a waist strap can distribute the weight of a heavy load more evenly
• Lightweight backpack – the backpack itself should not add much weight to the load
• Rolling backpack – useful for carrying heavy loads but not as good as reducing the load itself!
To prevenT Injury when uSIng a baCkpaCk,do The foLLowIng:
• Always use both shoulder straps
• Tighten the straps so that the pack is close to the body. The straps should hold the pack two inches above the waist
• Pack light
• Organise the backpack to use all of its compartments
• Stop often at school lockers, if possible. Do not carry all of the books needed for the day around with you all the time
• Bend using both knees, when you bend down. Do not bend over at the waist when wearing or lifting a heavy backpack
• Learn back-strengthening exercises to build up the muscles used to carry a backpack.
When it comes to taking care of your child’s physical health, it’s all in the bag – the schoolbag, that is

Drama school going strongTHE Bernie Delaney School of Speech & Drama was established in 1983 in St Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle.
Since then, Bernie has taught all over Dublin, earning a reputa-tion for providing fun-filled classes with a distinctly kind and friendly
atmosphere. Her ethos has always been child-centred, encouraging every participant to embrace their individuality and in doing so even-tually realise their full potential.
With the help of her daughter, Aisling, Bernie now teaches exclu-sively in the Marino Room, Church of St Vincent de Paul on Griffith
Avenue. Last year, the school celebrated
an impressive 30 years in opera-tion with a unique production of ‘Matilda and Me’.
Enrolments for the new term will be held in the school on Satur-day, September 12, 10am–2pm. All are welcome.

The Principal and Staff would like to invite students and their parents of
5th and 6th class to our
Open NightOn Tuesday 22nd of September
between 7.00 and 8.30pm in Ballygall Road East, Finglas, Dublin 11
St Kevin’s College,Serving the CommunitySt Kevin’s College was founded in 1967 by the Christian Brothers beside its present site on Ballygall Road East. It has educated boys from Ballygall parish and the surrounding areas of Finglas, Glasnevin and Ballymun and continues to do so. It continues its fine educational tradition under the patronage of the Edmund Rice School’s Trust and welcomes students of all faiths and none.
St Kevin’s offers a wide range of subjects that can be taken to Leav-ing Certificate level with students achieving excellent results in the state exams. Between 65%-70% of our students progress to third level edu-cation each year. This is achieved by working in partnership with parents to achieve the best outcomes for our students. We make widespread use of technology and parents have access to their son’s information online by use of our e-portal network. Our virtual learning platform Edmodo can also be accessed from home and provides vital information on a range of subject areas. We are also currently improv-ing our wi-fi system with a view to en-hancing student learning with tools such as mobile devices.
St Kevin’s offers core subjects at Junior Certificate Level of Irish, Eng-lish and Maths alongside History, Ge-ography, French, German, Science, Business Metalwork, Woodwork, Technical Graphics, Art and CSPE. Junior students have the option of studying a language and all take Sci-ence. At Leaving Cert level we offer the core subjects plus 4 option sub-jects. They include languages, His-tory, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Business, Accountancy,
Art, Engineering, Construction DCG and LCVP(extra). All students have PE and Religion.
St Kevin’s College also offers the Leaving Certificate Applied program and a very successful optional Transi-tion Year. We offer an extensive pro-gram of career guidance and have developed networks with many third level institutions particularly DCU and its Centre for talented youth (CTYI).
Caring for our students is very important to us and a Care Team network that include a strong Form Tutor/Year Head axis reporting to an overall team that includes our Coun-sellor, Chaplain, Home School Co-ordinator and senior Management, who meet weekly, ensure that issues are identified and addressed quickly. We also provide an LGBT club. We run courses for students and parents on an annual basis and invite parents to information meetings as well as parent teacher meetings regularly throughout the year. We also provide a strong Learning Support depart-ment to assist students if needed. We provide evening study and homework clubs to assist students.
While St Kevin’s places enormous focus on the student’s academic per-formance and work tirelessly to en-
sure that all students reach their full potential, we recognize that students require a balanced education. To ensure this we provide an extensive range of extra-curricular activities.
St Kevin’s has a proud sporting tra-dition. Did you know that we hold the record for the number of senior All-Ireland football medals in a Dublin secondary school with eight past pu-pils holding at least one. We continue to train footballers and hurlers who have graced Croke Park at all levels in recent years. Our Chaplain, Ger Bren-nan, a member of the current Dub-lin squad is part of of a very strong coaching team. Our hurlers continue to flourish at all levels. We also offer soccer at all levels winning the first year cup last year. Rugby is also a growing sport within the school with both junior and senior teams. Each year the school is well represented at athletics.
Our sporting highlight this year was to win the All Ireland U-16 basketball and the Dublin U-18 basketball in two thrilling campaigns.
Students can also take part in debat-ing competition with both our junior and senior teams. We offer an annual school tour to destinations such as Barcelona, Paris and Berlin and trips
in Ireland to attractions and outdoor pursuit centers. We have a strong Green Schools committee who were just awarded their second green flag. Student representation is important to us and the Student Council is con-sulted on matters relating.
We have a strong Parents Council who make important contributions to the running of the school and are generous with their time to fundraise for the school.
All of this extensive extra-curricular activity is made possible by the hard work and dedication of our excellent teaching staff who always go the extra mile for their students. This year a number of teachers participated in our fundraiser, Strictly St Kevin’s raising funds to upgrade our school library as part of our whole school literacy program. The previous fund-raiser, Fight Night saw teachers step in to the boxing ring to upgrade our computer room for our students.
Our Annual Open Night where we invite potential students and their parents takes place on Tuesday Sep-tember 22nd .We hope you can come an visit us in St Kevin’s on Open Night to meet all of our staff and particularly our wonderful students. We pride ourselves on our welcoming happy atmosphere and hope you can call and see it for yourself.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton▪
Jobs recovery gathers momentum
scientific and technical (+5,700), construction (+3,300) and indus-try (+1,800) and agriculture, for-estry and fishing (+2,700).
•Numbers self-employed are up 11,800 over the year, or 3.3 per cent - faster than the rate of employment growth generally of 3 per cent.
•Long-term unemployment rate has fallen from 6.8 per cent to 5.5 per cent over the year.
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton has welcomed the figures. He not-tion Plan for Jobs was launched.
The plan has helped drive down the unemployment rate from a high of 15.1 per cent to 9.5 per cent.
Minister Bruton said that in the three months another 19,000 lives have been “put back on track” as people found work.
“Each one of those lives back on track means a family improved and a community enhanced,” he said.
“It is also job creation that allows us to grow tax revenues and ultimately improve services and cut taxes, and that is why we have made employment our very top priority.
“We are clearly moving in the right direction, but any momen-
tum gained can be easily lost by a change of focus or a change in policy.
“Carefully and very deliber-ately we have rebuilt our econ-omy based on growing exports, encouraging and supporting enterprise and trying to reward work at all times.”
Minister Bruton believes the Government has the policy mix right to continue the jobs recov-ery.
“If we keep that course, we can secure the recovery so that all can participate in the benefits of that recovery,” he stated.
“More jobs will allow us reduce tax burdens which will encourage enterprise which will then allow us invest more in vital services.
“But if we don’t keep our focus on jobs then none of those things are possible.”
The figures published also show that:
•57,100 extra jobs were cre-ated in the past 12 months.
•19,000 extra jobs were cre-ated in Quarter 2 alone, up from 15,200 in Q1 and 11,600 in Q4 2014.
•Following the recent trend, full-time employment has in-creased by 56,800 over the past year.
•11 of 14 economic sectors are showing jobs growth over the past year, with particularly strong quarterly results in professional,
THE jobs recovery is continu-ing to gather momentum. Ac-cording to figures released last week by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the unemploy-ment rate is now down to 9.5 per cent.
Each one of those lives back on
track means a family improved and a community enhanced.
Jobs boost from online trading expectedOVER 70 per cent of small businesses that have participated in the Government’s Trading Online Voucher Scheme expect to re-cruit more staff.
That’s according to a survey published by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
On average, the small firms that expect to take on extra workers predict a jobs dividend of almost 15 per cent.
The report, entitled ‘Grow-ing Small Businesses Through Online Trade’, also shows that small firms which start to trade online, or develop their existing online presence, experience an 85 per cent boost in customer in-
quiries and a 21 per cent average increase in sales. The Govern-ment launched the Trading On-line Voucher Scheme in 2014 to boost the number of small firms that exploit the growing digital economy. It offers small busi-nesses a grant of up to €2,500 – subject to matching funding – as well as training, mentoring and networking support to help them develop their online trad-ing capability. Minister for Com-munications Alex White said the Government’s support for online
trading is making a tangible im-pact on jobs and economic ac-tivity in Ireland. “This survey shows that seven out of 10 firms supported by the scheme expect to take on new staff, with the potential creation of an average 1.4 new jobs per company,” said Minister White.
“This represents an increase of almost 15 per cent on average as all the businesses surveyed employ fewer than 10 staff.”
Some 225 companies that re-ceived Online Trading Vouchers responded to the survey, which found that:
•85% saw an increase in cus-tomer inquiries
•The companies surveys re-ported an average 21 increase in sales
•71% expected to recruit new staff to cope with new business
•An average of 1.4 jobs per company were expected to be created (in companies that em-ploy fewer than 10 people)
•40% of businesses had gen-erated customer interest from new markets overseas
•60% said that the new busi-ness was additional and did not displace existing sales
•99% expected their online business to grow in importance
80% said the competitive ap-plication process helped them in business strategy planning.
Irish consumers now spend almost €700,000 online each hour.
Over 70 per cent of small businesses that have participated in the Government’s Trading Online Voucher Scheme expect to recruit more staff.▪
