A CHARITY that promotes positive ageing and betterpolicies and services for older people has recorded thebusiest year in its history.

During 2013, a total of289,201 people used Age Ac-tion’s services, read their publi-cations, visited their website orcharity shops or helped withfundraising.

These numbers include the22,670 who used Age Action’sCare and Repair home visitationand DIY service. It also includes3,736 older people who weretaught to use a computer andthe 2,311 people who used thecharity’s information service.

Age Action’s AGM – wherethe figures were revealed - wastold that Government austeritymeasures continue to hurt thesickest and poorest of olderpeople.

Age Action chief executive,Robin Webster, said: “As wemarked our ‘coming of age’ an-niversary (21 years) it was clearthere has never been a greater

need for the work being doneby our staff, volunteers andmembers across Ireland.

“It was a very difficult year, especially for the majority ofolder people who are depend-ent on the State pension andother statutory benefits.

“The continuing reductionsin benefits and services imposeeven greater pressures on thoseliving alone, with little or nofamily support, and those withdisability or in poor health.”

Mr Webster said Govern-ment’s apparent disregard, when reducing public expendi-ture, for the extra difficultiesfacing the poorest and sickest ofall ages was “disturbing”. Hepointed to the abolition of thephone allowance for older peo-ple, and said there seemed tobe little understanding of theimportance of the phone as a

security measure. He said similarly, there was

inadequate recognition with thewithdrawal of Medical Cardsthat such cards acted as pass-ports for a range of servicesneeded by people who weresick.

“The annual report showsthat 2013 was a very successfulyear on all fronts, except whenit comes to funding,” said MrWebster.

“We need to explore fund-ing opportunities from allsources – public, statutory andpublic fundraising – to enable uscontinue with, and expand, ourwork with older people.”

Last year was a difficult onefor the charity sector in Ireland,in the wake of controversies atRehab and the Central Reme-dial Clinic (CRC).

Age Action said it welcomesthe establishment of the Chari-ties Regulatory Authority andlooks forward to working withit.

“The board of Age Action isfully committed to improvingour corporate governance, notsimply to comply with the min-imal regulations, but to achievethe highest standards of bestpractice,” Mr Webster added.

“We want all members tobe proud of belonging to AgeAction and all donors, whetherpublic or private, to be confi-dent that their money is spentwisely and well.”

THE Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton ad-dressed an Employer Forum Breakfast meeting in theInstitute of Technology, Blanchardstown last week.

This was the second such meeting of the Employer Forumthat Minister Burton launched in May.

Each meeting focuses on a particular theme with lastweek’s agenda focusing on communications between andamong employers, trainers and statutory bodies.

It comprises representatives of Fingal County Council, Blan-chardstown Area Partnership, Fingal Dublin Chamber of Com-merce, CPL Learning and Development, and the Blanchards-town Centre among others.

“The Employer Forum provides the department and otherrelevant stakeholders with the opportunity to work together toincrease employment in Blanchardstown and its environs,”Minister Burton said.

Man avoids jail after cash-in-transit robberyDeclan Brennan and Aoife Nic Ardghail

A MAN who agreed to pick his brother-in-law up from therobbery of a cash-in-transit worker has avoided jail.

Ian Carroll (22) rang his sis-ter’s partner, Ian Trimble (25),to give him and another accom-plice a lift with the cash boxafter the security device ex-ploded inside, coating theirclothes, hands and getaway carwith blue dye.

Gardai later found some ofthe stolen cash in Trimble'shome.

Trimble, of Cappagh Av-enue, Finglas, pleaded guilty atDublin Circuit Criminal Court topossessing e530 of stolen cashthat was covered in blue dye at

Heathfield Estate, RathoathRoad. He has three previousconvictions for minor drugs of-fences.

Judge Mary Ellen Ring sus-pended a sentence of two anda half years on condition thatTrimble co-operate fully withthe Probation Services.

Carroll of Barry Drive, Fin-glas, told gardai that anotherperson was supposed to havepicked them up, but that per-

son’s vehicle ran out of fuel.Garda Graham Dillon told

the court that the cash-in-transitworker had been picking up acash box at the service stationwhen Carroll ran up with ahandgun and demanded themoney.

A blank firing pistol waslater found in the Mazda get-away car, which was found in afield beside a barrel of water. The car and water were covered

in dye.Gardai recovered e10,000

of the stolen cash in the boot ofTrimble’s car.

The Garda agreed withMichael Bowman BL, defendingTrimble that Carroll had told gar-dai that Trimble hadn’t knownabout the robbery or the cashbox in the boot of his car.

Mr Bowman submitted thatthe father-of-two had tried toleave Carroll at the side of theroad at one stage during his rolein the incident.

He said that Trimble hadworked for seven years in theconstruction trade before beinglet go in 2011 due to the eco-nomic downturn.

Counsel submitted that hisclient accepted he just shouldhave left the scene instead ofgetting involved and acceptingstolen money as compensation.

He asked the judge “not tosnatch away a number of yearsin a young man’s life”.

Judge Ring commented thatit was “surprising” to target sucha security company as “childrenwatching television could tellyou that cash-in-transit use dyesin cash boxes”.

At a previous hearing Carrollreceived a four-year prison termwith two years suspended afterhe pleaded guilty to robbinge30,780 at Texaco Service Sta-tion, Ballycoolin on April 25,2012. He has 17 previous convic-tions for district court offences.

Life's a beach this summer -so let's make the most of it

Tony McCullagh

■ Portmarnock's Velvet Strand pictured in 1994. PHOTO BY DARREN KINSELLA

THE recent spell of good weather has seen us flocking toDublin's sandy shores in our droves.

For a capital city, we arepretty spoiled when it comes toquality beaches on ourdoorstep. Northside gems in-clude Skerries, Loughshinny,Rush (North and South), Don-abate, Portmarnock, Sutton andDollymount, while south Dublinboasts the likes of Sandymount,Seapoint, Killiney and Sandy-cove.

If only we had the climate, our beaches would be throngedfor most of the summermonths, like they were at theend of June. For the rest of theyear, they are usually the pre-serve of dog walkers, kitesurfers and keep fit enthusiasts.

Nevertheless, we areblessed to have access to such avariety of coastal havens soclose to a major European citylike Dublin.

I am lucky enough to livewithin five minutes' walk of afantastic beach, which I visit ona daily basis with my four-legged companion. For most ofthe year I am among a handful

of users of this wonderfulamenity and it was hearteningto see it packed with locals andtourists during the recent 'heat-wave'.

I must pay tribute to mylocal authority for implement-ing such an efficient earlymorning beach cleaning pro-gramme, which made the ex-perience all the morepleasurable for swimmers andpicnickers alike. As usual, unfor-tunately, some inconsiderate id-iots left a trail of litter in theirwake. Seriously, how hard can itbe to bring your rubbish homewith you?

In the case of my localbeach, there is a serious short-age of bins. While this is not en-tirely a justification forirresponsible littering, it is anarea that councils need to im-prove on. The problem with dogdirt in public places could alsobe eased if the facilities were inplace to encourage responsiblebehaviour by pet owners.

It would also be nice, inci-

dentally, if more public showerswere installed on our beaches(particularly the ones withoutBlue Flags!)

Anti-social behaviour at ourbeaches can also ruin a per-fectly good day out for families. While there were reports ofnear-riots in Howth at the be-ginning of the bathing season,I was happy to note a strongGarda presence at nearby Port-marnock on one of the hottestdays of the recent warm spell.

There have been other im-

provements, too. Many beaches(including my local one) havebeen closed off to cars in recentyears on safety grounds. Once amagnet for brainless boy racers, our sandy shores have been ridof this menace once and for all.

Parents also need to bemindful of safety when theirchildren take to the water. Aninviting sea can be an unpre-dictable, dangerous beast andrip currents or rising tides to betaken into account. Despite thepresence of lifeguards, remem-

ber that they are not babysittersand it is primarily the job of par-ents to ensure their child'ssafety in the water. Cheap float-ing devices or toy store dinghiesshould also be discouraged atall times.

We can only hope that thebest of the summer is not be-hind us so we can continue toenjoy Dublin's enviable selec-tion of seaside hot spots.

BOOK OF THE WEEK:Irish Brigades Abroadby Stephen McGarry

IRELAND has been a rebelliousand troublesome colony sincethe 12th century.

The English Conquest and theIrish military tradition of soldieringabroad in Continental Europe beganafter failed rebellions and religiousdiscrimination at home.

Following defeat in the JacobiteWar (1689-91), which was foughtbetween Jacobite supporters of thedeposed Catholic King James andsupporters of the Protestant KingWilliam, the Irish army withdrew toFrance in what became known ro-mantically as 'The Flight of the WildGeese.'

The Irish were formed into unitscalled 'Irish brigades' in France andSpain. There were also Irish regi-ments formed in Austria, adding toa long tradition of Irish service in

Bavaria and in Catherine the Great’sImperial Russia and beyond.

Well over 50,000 Irishmenserved in the Irish Brigades andthousands rose to high rank acrossEurope and beyond. Irish troopstook part in most of the definingbattles of the 18th and early 19thcenturies and served all over Eu-rope, India, Africa, Canada andalongside General Washington inthe American Revolutionary War.

During the Napoleonic periodthere were around a dozen Irishgenerals in the French Army, andmany of their names are engravedon the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Henry Clarke, who wasNapoleon’s Minister of War was cen-tral to the creation of the ‘GrandArmy’ and was on horseback besideNapoleon at Waterloo.

General Charles Kilmaine, bornand bred in Fishamble Street inDublin, was one of the few officersNapoleon had complete confidencein and commanded the left-wing ofthe Army of Invasion of the BritishIsles and the French Army in Italy.

Two hundred years ago, in 1814,the 500-strong Irish Legion battalionwere stationed in the Belgian city ofAntwerp when it was besieged by aBritish army as part of the Allied in-vasion of French-occupied Belgiumagainst Napoleon.

The Legion held out for threemonths but lifted the siege whenNapoleon was removed from powerin May. The Siege of Antwerp was tobe their last major action, as theunit was shortly afterwards dis-banded, ending a 125-year-old tra-dition of Irish service in France.

Stephen McGarry lives in Dublin and has spentmany years in Belgium where he discoveredthe Continent's links to Irish history.

As the last major history of the Irish Brigades waswritten nearly 150 years ago he felt compelled to tellthe story of the 'forgotten' Wild Geese.

The journey was a long one, involving researchingaround 500 publications over five years across Europe. He hopes this well-received definitive history, com-plete with exciting tales of adventure and sacrifice, honour and bravery, will be one readers will enjoy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A NEW book entitled ‘Me, My Mother and Alzheimer’sDisease’ unravels the mystery behind an abuseddaughter and her mother with Alzheimer’s Disease.

When author Janet O’Connell originally started writing herbook, it centered on the poor relationship she had with hermother, Dianne.

However, she realised later on that she has to expand herthoughts in order to unravel the obscurity in her, her mother, and Alzheimer’s disease.

In her moving memoir O’Connell shares with readers herlife journey as an abused woman while she confronts some ofthe disturbing questions stuck in her subconscious mind con-cerning her relationship with her mother who has been diag-nosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

O’Connell decided to share her story about ‘Me, MyMother, and Alzheimer’s Disease’ so that children and parentswill work on their relationship and forgive each other before itis too late, since a terminal illness such as Alzheimer’s diseasecan destroy their wishes forever.

Their legacy was felt well intothe 20th Century. Probably the mostfamous Frenchman of all time, Pres-ident Charles DeGaulle was de-scended from the powerfulMacCartan clan who ruled part of CoDown for centuries before theywere unseated during the EnglishConquest.

DeGaulle’s ancestor was An-thony MacCartan who went toFrance with the ‘Flight of the WildGeese’ and served as a captain inthe Irish Brigade.

Ireland experienced a ‘braindrain’ in the ‘long eighteenth-cen-tury' with so many eminent IrishCatholic gentry families beingdriven away. Ireland’s loss certainlyturned out to be Europe’s gain.

Irish Brigades Abroad covers theperiod from King James II's reign ofthe three kingdoms of England,Scotland, and Ireland in 1685, untilthe disbandment of the IrishBrigades in France and Spain.

The book looks at the origins, formation, recruitment, and the ex-ploits of the Irish regiments, includ-ing their long years of campaigningfrom the War of the Grand Alliancein 1688 right through to theNapoleonic Wars in 1815.

What emerges is a picture ofthe old-fashioned virtues of honor, chivalry, integrity and loyalty, of ad-venture and sacrifice in the name ofa greater cause.

Packie inspired by true life cancer storiesA NEW and inspiring resource for men experiencingprostate cancer was launched by legendary Republic of Ire-land footballer Packie Bonner recently.

Entitled ‘Man to Man: IrishStories of Hope in Prostate Can-cer’, the storybook is a collec-tion of real-life inspiring storiesof hope from men with prostate

cancer. It is designed to offer hope

and support to other men withtheir diagnosis and promotegreater psychological supports

for those living with the illness.Developed by Janssen, the

pharmaceutical division of John-son & Johnson, in associationwith the Irish Cancer Society, the storybook is the result of re-search with people who havebeen affected by prostate can-cer to find out what type of in-

formation would help them ontheir journey to recovery.

The research found that notonly do other men withprostate cancer find comfort inhearing a real Irish story, doc-tors and nurses can also drawon those experiences in order tofurther improve the treatment

diagnosed with prostate cancerin Ireland each year and, afterskin cancer, it is the leadingcause of cancer in men.

In Ireland, approximately17,000 men are living with thedisease and approximately 500men die from the disease eachyear.

The storybook contains 11personal accounts of men’s ex-periences of prostate cancer, in-cluding the story of WilliePenrose TD, and John Dowling,Chairperson, Men Against Can-cer.

Speaking at the launchPackie said: “The ‘Man to Man:Irish Stories of Hope in ProstateCancer’ storybook will help menliving with prostate cancer tosee that they are not alone.

Unlike us, they don’t feelcompelled to lie out in the sunand risk their health for abronzed look but they do de-pend on us to ensure they don’tsuffer in the heat.

The DSPCA has issued sometimely advice for keeping petscool in the warm weather. Here’stheir top tips. ● Your dog must always be ableto move into a cooler, more ven-tilated environment. ● Never leave dogs alone incars, glass conservatories or car-avans even if it’s cloudy – thetemperature may become toohot.● Always provide good suppliesof drinking water, in a bowl thatcan’t be knocked over. Carrywater with you on hot dayswhen out and about on walks orin the car.● If you do leave dogs outside, you must provide a cool shadyspot where they can escapefrom the sun at any part of theday.● Never allow dogs to exerciseexcessively in hot weather.● Groom dogs regularly to getrid of excess hair. Q: I have just bought a cat, what is the best food to give her?It is important to feed your cat the correct nutrition suited to theirage, size, lifestyle, and cater for sensitivities and specific breeds.A good way to look at is, always work out the feeding cost per dayfor your cat rather than the cost of the bag.You need to know your cat is getting the right balance of nutrientsto increase her abilities to learn and thrive. We recommend feed-ing a premium quality dry food to avoid dental and digestive prob-lems, which can lead to costly visits to the vets.

Protein: The one nutrient they need every. Choose cat foods thatare packed with protein products. Fish, chicken, turkey, egg andbeef are the best sources for protein.Tip: Check the ingredients – If the protein (meat/fish) is not one ofthe first or second ingredients – the protein may be comming fromlow grade source!Taurine: This is an essential amino acid needed for heart, eyeand brain tissues. Unlike dogs, cats cannot make their ownTaurine and their only source is through the food they eat.Taurine deficiency can lead to death.Water: Don’t forget to always leave a fresh bowl of water avail-able for your kitty.

Dry or Wet?A diet comprised of only wet food means your cat won’t developstrong teeth and gums as it is soft and high in water content.Cats fed dry diets have less tartar build up on their teeth and lessgum disease surrounding the teeth. The toughness of the dry foodwill support a healthy mouth for your cat. Many dry cat foods have a long shelf life after opening, making ita practical choice. Wet food has a short life once the food hasbeen served. If you feel flustered by the numerous brands of catfood and are unsure which would be most suited to your friendlyfeline, then don’t hesitate to ask for help at any Petworld store. We’ll be glad to help you pick out the best cat food to suit bothyou and your cat’s requirements.

Rick Steves

Kate Hopcraft

I was scrambling to make apublic television show, and as ifplaced there by heaven’s centralcasting, this tender giant of aman was bagpiping to the birds, the passing clouds, and the oc-casional motorist.

He had picked a spot thatseemed intentionally miles fromnowhere. We stopped, and hegraciously demonstrated hispipes, giving us a tour of thatfascinating symbol of Scottishculture. I’ve never forgotten thatwonderful chance meeting.

The Scottish Highlands are

SHORT BREAKS WITH

YEARS ago I met a dear man on a deserted roadside in theScottish Highlands.

filled with magic and mystery. Inthe northernmost reaches ofScotland, the Highlands featurea wild, severely undulating ter-rain that’s punctuated by lochs(lakes) and fringed by sea lochs(inlets) and islands. Whenever Iwant a taste of traditional Scot-land, this is where I come.

The area north of Glasgowoffers a fun and easy dip into theHighlands. A smart place tospend the night is in Oban. Thislow-key resort town has a fa-mous whisky distillery and awinding promenade lined with

gravel beaches, ice-creamstands, and good eateries.

Wind, boats, gulls, and thepromise of a wide-open Atlanticbeyond give Oban a rugged

charm.About an hour’s drive north

of Oban is Glencoe valley. Alongwith its wild, powerful, and starkscenery, Glencoe has somebloody clan history.

In 1692, British Redcoatscame to the valley and weresheltered and fed for 12 days bythe MacDonalds. One morning, the soldiers were ordered to riseup early and kill their sleepinghosts, violating the rules ofHighland hospitality and earningthe valley the name ‘The Weep-ing Glen’.

It’s fitting that such an epic, dramatic incident should be setin this equally epic, dramaticvalley, where the cliffsides seemto weep with running streamswhen it rains. While drivingthrough here, I make it a pointto get out of the car and feel thewonder of this distant corner ofScotland.

When traveling in Scotland, Ilike to balance the big cities likeEdinburgh and Glasgow with thesleepy, more traditional, and - asis so often the case - more en-chanting rural and village scene.

About two hours north of Ed-inburgh, tiny Kenmore fits thebill perfectly. Little more thanthe fancy domain of its castle, achurch set in a bouquet of tomb-stones and a line of humblehouses, Kenmore offers a finedose of small-town Scottishflavour.

Loch Tay, near Kenmore, is afascinating place. All across Scot-land, archaeologists know that

little round islands on the lochsare evidence of crannogs - circu-lar lakefront houses built by bigshots about 2,500 years ago.

In the age before roads, peo-ple travelled by boat, so buildinghouses on waterways madesense. There are 18 suchcrannogs on Loch Tay and one isnow the Crannog Centre, a mu-seum dedicated to demonstrat-ing the skills every crannoghomeowner needed, such asmaking fire by rubbing sticks.

The Highlands’ past is writ-ten all over its landscape. Per-haps no other place is asevocative as the memorial bat-tlefield of Culloden, near theworkaday city of Inverness.

In 1746, Jacobite troops(most of them Highlanders)gave it their all to put theCatholic Bonnie Prince Charlie onthe English throne…and failed.

While only about 50 English

soldiers died, the Highlanderslost about 1,500 men. BonniePrince Charlie declared, “Everyman for himself!” as he gallopedaway. The Highlanders scattered.

Touring Culloden is a power-ful experience, made even moreso by watching the 360-degreevideo that re-creates the slaugh-ter.

Near Culloden is another fas-cinating sight - the Clava Cairns.I always knew about England’sfamous stone circles, but I hadn’trealised that Scotland had over-achieving knuckle draggers, too.

At Clava Cairns, set in apeaceful grove of trees, are theremains of three stone burialmounds, each cleverly con-structed 4,000 years ago with apassageway that the sun illumi-nates, as if by magic, with eachwinter solstice.

Wandering through thesecairns, knowing they’re as old as

the pyramids, is thought-provok-ing.

Music provides the perfectbackdrop at the end of a High-lands day. Each evening, in al-most every town, the happysound of traditional folk musicspills out of local pubs. And eachevening, visitors have thechance to join in the fun.

Celtic music stirs me. Part ofits attraction is how it’s invigor-ated by the driving and organicbeat of the bodhrán - that ubiq-uitous handheld, animal-skinneddrum thumped with such vi-brancy with a single stick.

I see the tumult of the pastand the love of heritage in theeyes of the musicians. There re-ally is a spark that mixes wellwith beer, smiles, and pub am-bience. A night sipping a localbrew, surrounded by this uniqueconviviality is a highlight of anyHighlands visit.

■ Palma Nova has beautiful sandy beaches and great restaurants

where to eat with a diverserange of food for all, includinghome-cooked Irish and Britishfood, as well as Chinese, Frenchand Mexican.

Nightlife in Palma Nova isquite low-key and is mainlycomprised of disco and karaokebars. If you are looking forsomething a little more exciting, nearby Magaluf is popularamong party goers. BCM, thebiggest club in the island isbased there, with the world’smost famous DJs playing regu-larly. The resort also offers aplethora of disco bars to cater forall age groups.

If you feel like taking it easyfor an evening, there are plentyof things to do in the surround-ing area. Golf Fantasia is a pop-ular attraction. It caters for allages with three different tropicalcourses to choose from.

A visit to Mallorca is notcomplete without visiting theCatalonian Gothic cathedral. Thisis a major architectural landmarkwith both stunning exterior andinterior features.

ACCORDING to a recent pollcarried out for the IrishHeart Foundation by IpsosMRBI, the majority of theIrish public agrees with ahealth-related tax on sugarsweetened drinks to helpreduce childhood obesity.

Fifty-two per cent of thepublic are in favour of thetax, compared to 46 percent against, while 87 percent of the populationbelieve that sugar-sweetened drinks contributeto obesity among childrenand young people.

Barry Dempsey, chiefexecutive of the Irish HeartFoundation, said the figuresclearly demonstrate thatIrish people want theGovernment to takestronger action to tacklechildhood obesity and thatthey understand the rolethat sugar sweetened drinkshave in this developinghealth crisis.

The Irish Heart Foundationis calling for a 20 per centtax on sugary drinks in thenext budget. This wouldraise in the region of e60million in extra tax revenue.

Dempsey. “The introduction of a tax

to drive down consumptionof these beverages seemslike a no-brainer to protectour children.”

Mr Dempsey wasspeaking at a seminar toconsider this measure asone approach to tacklechildhood obesity.

Guest speaker, Dr AdamBriggs, Nuffield Departmentof Population Health,University of Oxford, outlined his research, alongwith others, whichestimated that a 10 per centtax on sugar-sweetened

beverages could potentiallylead to a 1.3 per centreduction in obesity. Thiswould reduce the numberof obese adults by around10,000 in Ireland and thetotal number of adults whoare overweight, includingobese, by 14,000. Theeffects on calorie intake, and therefore, onoverweight and obesity, would be greatest inyounger age groups andregular drinkers of sugarsweetened beverages.

This research wasundertaken as part of theHealth Impact Assessment(HIA) 2012 commissionedby the Department ofHealth.

Professor Donal O’Shea, consultant endocrinologist,Head of the ObesityManagement Clinic,Loughlinstown and Chair ofthe Irish Heart Foundation’sNutrition Council, said: “Theobesity problem is publichealth concern Number One- as the World HealthOrganisation says ourchildren are getting fatter -and Ireland is leading theway in European childhoodobesity rates.

“We now have theevidence to act. There isconvincing data thatreducing consumption ofsugar-sweetened drinksimproves the weight andhealth of children andadolescents.”

Professor O’Shea added:“In Ireland we consume 83litres of carbonated drinksper capita, with teenageboys as the country’sbiggest consumers."

“We are now all veryaware of the problem andwe urgently need to act.

“Fiscal measures, including a tax on sugarsweetened drinks is apractical and obvious action, which is an absolute healthimperative and clearly haspublic support.”

Results of asthmasurvey released

RESULTS from a pan-European asthma survey recentlyreleased, reveal that nearly half of all Irish people withasthma are classified as having ‘uncontrolled’ asthma, according to the GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma), asthmacontrol classification.

Further, highlighting this finding the survey shows that onaverage respondents experience symptoms nearly three days aweek.

‘Uncontrolled’ asthma is unadvisable; it may progress to thepoint of an asthma attack, and can often result in the recurrence orworsening of symptoms for those with asthma.

Releasing its findings in Ireland, the Recognise Asthma and Linkto Symptoms and Experience (REALISE™) detailed that 92 per cent ofIrish people with asthma claim confidence in managing theirasthma well on their own, yet 48 per cent of these respondents areclassified as ‘uncontrolled’ by GINA classification.

This is despite high levels of confidence, knowledge about theircondition and low perception of how serious the condition is.

Irish people with asthma follow only the Italians (53 per cent),Norwegians (52 per cent) and Germans (51 per cent) in levels ofuncontrolled asthma - and are placed higher than the overall EUaverage which states 45 per cent of EU asthma sufferers areuncontrolled.

The REALISE™ survey, developed in partnership with respiratoryexperts and sponsored by Mundipharma International, is the largestpan-European data survey on the incidence of asthma exacerbationsand symptoms compared to GINA control classifications, as well asinsights into patient attitudes.

Getting wild in the Subaru Outback Seán Creedon

WHEN you mention a Subaruto somebody for the first timethe response is usually a ref-erence to the speedy Impreza.

But of course the Japanesecompany now has several othercars in their range, other than theone favoured by boy racers orthose who crave that extra speed.

Subaru Ireland are pleased towelcome an automatic diesel ver-sion of their impressive OutbackEstate to their Irish dealerships. The company has a relativelysmall Irish operation, with 11dealers and two further garagesauthorised for repairs.

I have never been to Australia, but I think the suitably namedOutback would be an ideal car totravel in to those remote areas‘down under.’ However, accordingto Wikipedia you are advised totravel in a convoy if you are ven-turing into very remote parts ofthe outback.

The Outback was launched inEurope in 1996 and it has taken 18years to mobilise a diesel versionto Ireland. According to Subaru thediesel version should give you ap-proximately 44 mpg and Iwouldn’t disagree with that figure.

The introduction of the auto-matic diesel engine is a world first, combining the popular 2.0-litreBoxer diesel engine with a Lin-eartronic CTV, which means contin-uously variable transmission. TheBoxer engine is set low and all theaction happens low down in the

engine; it provides a low centre ofgravity, which in turn improvesgrip and handling. The only down-side is the ‘scoop’ on the bonnetwhich is needed to take in air tocool the engine.

I enjoyed the high driving po-sition and there is great ground

clearance. The leather seats are re-ally comfortable and there is ampleroom for five well-built adults. It’sa very long car and while it doesn’thave reversing sensors, there is afull colour reversing camera.

The dash area is very neat andwell laid out. There are several

Skoda’ s Pilsen Auto getsready for the 142 seasonPILSEN Auto is getting ready forthe new 142 registrations.

They are delighted that they have the sup-port of Volkswagen bank and it is no coinci-dence that they are offering a fantastic rate of1.42 per cent interest rate on all new registra-tions.

Car sales nationally are up by 24 per centand Skoda are a couple of per cent pointshigher than that.

“Pilsen are higher again,” said a delightedDavid Hashish, Sales Manager for Pilsen Auto.

He added that they have a great team atPilsen Auto, and that customers get to experi-ence a wonderful atmosphere in the show-room.

There is no hard sell with Skoda, as they area wonderful car, offering great value formoney, and are very economical to drive witha stunning design.

David added that the sales team’s mainfocus is on suiting the car to the customer’sneeds.

With so many models to choose from thereis one to suit everyone.

David has also pointed out that he now hasex-demos on sale now that offer great value ofup to e3,000 off the normal price.

However, he also mentioned that they goout the door very quickly as they are such greatvalue.

There is massive boot spaceand a tonneau to hide goods fromunwanted eyes if necessary. Spacewas provided for a spare wheel, but sadly you have to make dowith a repair kit. However, if youwish you can purchase a ‘mini’spare wheel for approximately¤120. I think a small or possiblyfull-size spare wheel would be ad-visable if you are using the Outbackin rough off-road terrain. The Out-back can tow weights of up to 1.6tonne if required.

The exterior won’t win anyprizes for looks, but once inside youwill forget all about the bland ex-terior as you relax and enjoy theride in what is a really comfortableestate. I’m told the Outback is verypopular with ‘country folk’ inBritain and as you know whateveris popular across the Irish sea, sooncatches on here.

From January through May, Opel newvehicle registrations increased by 3.6 per-cent to 454,807 units versus the sameyear-ago period, representing a 5.77 per-cent share of the overall vehicle market inEurope. In May Opel sold 95,143 units, andmarket share climbed to 5.96 percent.

“Our models are extremely popular, and we benefit from this in many Euro-pean markets that are once again grow-ing,” said Board Member for Sales PeterChristian Küspert.

“This is also reflected in the orderbooks. We have already received morethan 240,000 orders for the Mokka acrossEurope, over 90,000 for our lifestyle miniADAM and more than 100,000 for our flag-ship, the new Insignia,”

This success has a broad, multi-marketbase. In the first five months, Opel gainedmarket share in ten European countries.

This included Germany, where marketshare rose to 6.88 percent of the total ve-hicle market over the first five months. InMay alone, market share reached 7.26 per-cent.

The compact Mokka SUV was numberone in the SUV segment in May as well as

in the first five months of the year. The Corsa proved to be a perennial fa-

vorite and ranked number one in the smallcar segment in May. The Zafira was num-ber two in the high-capacity van segmentin May as well as in the first five monthsof this year.

In the UK, Vauxhall defended its posi-tion as the second-largest brand in the firstfive months and in May of this year. In-signia and Zafira were top of their seg-ments in both time periods.

In May, the Mokka also took the topspot in its segment. Opel was particularlysuccessful in Hungary in May, when it wasmarket leader in the overall vehicle market.

■ From January through May, Opel new vehicle registrations increased by 3.6 percent to 454,807.

AUTO EXPRESS GIVES LOADS OF REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BUY A ŠKODA.Surveys, Awards and League Tables are great and everyone loves seeing how they or their team did. And for cars, it’s no different. And in the world of cars Awards don’t come much bigger than the Auto Express Driver Power Awards. And this year no less than 50,073 car owners took part in the survey, rating their cars in 10 key categories. So it’s real people, giving real feedback and rating their own car across many aspects - from its performance and handling to running costs. So they are considered to be ,+*) ,() '&*) %,$') #+" *+'#) )reliability and satisfaction surveys.,) #() , ) +) , ) ) ') '&*)bottom of the table you may not be so happy. But ŠKODA drivers

will not have that problem. Infact, going by the results ŠKODA drivers *) ) *) $'#$*) +&) &)Because ŠKODA took the TOP 3 places in the entire survey, Yes, 1, 2 and 3. For Yeti, Citigo and Superb to be precise. And that’s not us shouting about our cars. It’s our valued customers proudly $#+) &,) $'#$*) '&*) *)with their ŠKODA. This year the average satisfaction amongst owners was 88.36%. But you +) #%#+*) , ) $ #$*) ',) +)that the ŠKODA Yeti, Citigo and Superb had an average of 92.36%. It’s an incredible testament to the hard work at ŠKODA that we have managed to achieve the TOP 3 rankings in this survey. But that’s not all. In the overall

Manufacturer Ranking, ŠKODA was voted the No.1 car Brand. This

ranking includes reliability, build quality, practicality, running costs,

ease of driving, performance, road handling, seat comfort and

in-car technology. ŠKODA had an overall satisfaction rating

of 89.75% and came top for running costs and practicality. So what is it about ŠKODA that makes our drivers feel so good. For Superb, reliability and build quality continue to be the hallmark of this car’s success. And the practicality of a cavernous boot and great rear leg room ensure another podium +#$&) &*) #'#,) #$) '&*) $%) )with a powerful punch. For a recent addition to the ŠKODA range it has certainly made its mark. The Citigo was ranked by Auto Express as its Car of the Year in 2012. It is without question the best super-mini on the market and is the cheapest car to run, with owners delighted by how little they need to spend on fuel, servicing and repairs. If you’re in the market for

a small car, don’t look beyond the ŠKODA Citigo. And taking pride of place at the top of the ranking - for the third year in a row - is the ŠKODA Yeti. This car has never +#$&*) , '$#*) '&*) *$) ',)two. It seems that once you buy a Yeti you truly will never think of driving anything else. The ease of driving, build quality and road handling create the platform for its impressive performance. Four years after its launch reliability is proving a major factor in owners’ satisfaction with the car. Infact, the overall score was even higher than last year. So the ŠKODA Yeti shows no sign of being knocked off top spot. Perhaps this time next year, you yourself will also be driving a Yeti and testifying to its greatness.

Ireland’s oldest school launches

outreach programmeST PATRICK’S Cathedral has launched a newoutreach programme aimed at sustaining andfurther developing its choir school.

In addition to being the only dedicated choirschool in the country, St. Patrick’s is also the oldestschool in Ireland, dating back to 1432. Its students –aged between eight and 13 – begin each school daywith a rehearsal before processing to the Cathedral tosing a service of matins (morning prayer).

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Masterof Choristers, Stuart Nicholson said: “As the currentcrop of exceptionally talented choristers prepare tograduate at the end of the school year, we havedecided to take this opportunity to run a series ofevents over the coming months, with the aim ofattracting new enrolments for the next academic year.

“It’s hoped that the events that make up theoutreach programme will also raise funds to helpsustain the Choir School, which is uniquely placed tooffer an education with a difference to its students.”

Mr Nicholson described being a chorister at St.Patrick’s Cathedral as “a real privilege” for the boys,

which helped them mature into well-rounded adults.“Not only do they develop an incredibly strong

work ethic as a result of the long hours, they also takeaway an appreciation of music that they can enjoy foryears to come,” he added.

“We would encourage anyone with an interest inmusic or who is parent to a musically gifted child tocome along to one or all of the events over the nextfew months to get a flavour of the work that we do.”

The outreach programme got underway with aspecial recital from the choir boys on Friday June 13 atSt. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The choristers performed the ‘Chichester Psalms’by Leonard Bernstein and five African-AmericanSpirituals from ‘A Child of Our Time’ by MichaelTippett.

They were directed by Mr Nicholson, and joined byorganist Tristan Russcher, harpist Anne-Marie O'Farrelland Richard O’Donnell on percussion.

The next event will be a ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’organ recital with music by John Williams, LeonardBernstein and John Philip Sousa at 6.15pm on July 4.

How to beat the banks

If you were to believetheir expensive advertisingcampaigns the banks areopen for business and willingto lend. Nonsense. Nothingcould be further from thetruth.

The banks are hooveringup the nation’s savings – Irishhouseholds have e91 billionof bank deposits. But thebanks are refusing to lend tojob-creating Irish businesses.Bank lending to smallbusinesses fell by over 6 percent last year and is nowdown by over a quarter sinceearly 2010.

The banks are not doingtheir job, which is to collectsavers’ deposits and lendthem to borrowers. In fact weno longer have banks worthyof the name, only glorifieddebt collection agencies asthe existing banks attempt torecover the bad loans theymade during the Celtic Tigerera.

We have all heard thehorror stories about howbadly the banks are treatingtheir customers: businessowners being told that theircompanies’ overdrafts werebeing slashed – regardless of

the impact on jobs, and thebanks’ stony-hearted refusalto deal sympathetically withhomeowners who havefallen into mortgage arrearsthrough no fault of their own.

Instead of doing the jobwhich they are supposed todo, the banks are engaging ina policy of “lend andpretend”. Unsecured businessoverdrafts are beingconverted into term loans, which have to be personallyguaranteed by the businessowner while a solicitor’sletter is categorised as a“sustainable solution” for a

homeowner trapped inmortgage arrears.

This allows them to claimthat they are meetingGovernment lending targetsand dealing with mortgagearrears while actually cuttingback on their loan books andallowing the mortgagearrears problem to continueto fester.

Up to now both saversand borrowers have had nochoice but to put up with theappalling behaviour of ourzombie banks. After all, withmost of the foreign-ownedbanks having pulled out of

Ireland, we no longer haveany meaningful competitionin the banking market.

The Irish banks reckonedthat their customers, bothsavers and borrowers, couldeither take it or leave it andhave behaved accordingly.

Well the good news isthat they don’t have to take itanymore. Moneybush.netmatches companies lookingto finance good projects thatwill grow their business withsavers who are looking for adecent return on their cash.

Get the spare room in shapeYou can’t make your spare

room into a penthouse atThe Ritz but there are somethings you can do to makeit almost as comfortable. Asa rule of thumb you shouldprovide a bed you’d be will-ing to sleep in yourself. Anuncomfortable sofa bed orfoam pad just won’t do it.

Invest some money in agood sleep surface andthey’ll thank you for it in

the morning. A good pillowis like icing on the cake. It’scrucial that you providecrisp, clean, and coordi-nated linens for yourovernight guests. Alwayskeep some spare for theunexpected arrival.

You don’t have to investin the finest luxury linens tomake someone feel special. Most large stores have largesections of discontinued

styles of designer sheetsets and lovely importedtowels. You can really get abeautiful look at a smallprice.

An electric blanket orfluffy down duvet will keepyour guests cosy on thechilliest nights. Be sure tohave an extra blankettucked away in a closetshould your guests needmore warmth. You may notwant to be entertainingyour guest all the timethey’re with you and it’s

important that they feelthey have someplace to getaway for a little private re-laxing time. A comfortablechair is just the answer.Even a small slipper chairand stool will do the trickand your guest will have aquiet place to be on theirown.Have a bare table-top,empty drawer, and closetspace available for yourguest to put things away. They’ll feel more at homeand not be concernedabout having their things in

your way.A reading light isessential. Most people liketo read for a while beforegoing to sleep. Be sure tohave good light that can beturned on and off withoutgetting out of bed. Bedsideflowers are another greatidea. You’ll find that if youhave everything in orderfor your guest’s arrival andeverything is ready the visitwill be a happy one forboth of you.

IT’S all to easy to ignore the spare bedroom. After all,you never have to sleep there yourself but an uncomfort-able night’s rest will leave a lasting impression onguests.

MERCHANTSMARKET

SECOND HAND FURNITURE WANTED

East Wall Road, Dublin 3.www.merchantsmarket.ie

Tel: 819 99 99

WE PAY CASH ON-THE-SPOT

Serve up a safe barbequeBut just because you’re

cooking outdoors, doesn’tmean your good cookinghabits have to go up insmoke. After all, you wantguests to go home withmemories of a good time, not a tummy bug.

Here’s some top BBQ tipsfrom safefood on how toget it right every time. Before you get grilling

Before you begin to setup your barbeque give thegrill a thorough clean byscrubbing the metal rackwith a suitable ovencleaner or a damp brushdipped in bicarbonate ofsoda. And remember torinse it thoroughly withwarm, soapy water after-wards.Keep your cool

When cooking and eatingoutdoors, food is away fromyour fridge for a longer pe-riod of time which can leadto germs multiplyingquickly. Keep perishablefoods like salads, coleslawand quiche in the fridgeuntil you need them. Before you start

Before you try your bestimitation of a TV chef, makesure frozen foods are fullythawed (preferably in thefridge on the bottom shelf;which may take overnight)before you start cookingthem. Keep foods you planto cook properly chilled inthe fridge or a cool boxuntil needed and light yourbarbecue well in advance.

For Charcoal barbeques, the flames should havedied down before you startcooking. It’s in your hands

As with preparing anyfood, make sure to washyour hands before and afterhandling food. Rememberto keep raw meat separatefrom cooked meat andready-to-eat foods like sal-ads.

Always use separateutensils for handling rawand cooked meat whencooking. Never put cookedfood on a dish that hasbeen used for raw meat orpoultry (unless it’s beenthoroughly washed in be-tween) and keep food cov-

ered whenever possible.Cook with confidence!

The big issue when barbe-quing is making sure foodhas been cooked thoroughly, all the way through. This isparticularly important whencooking poultry, pork, minced and skeweredmeats, such as burgers, sausages and kebabs on thebarbecue - while the out-side may look cooked (andin some cases burnt), theinside can still be raw.

These meats should becooked until they are pipinghot all the way through, with no pink meat remain-ing and the juices run clear. If you’ve got lots of peoplevisiting your barbeque andwant to ensure that meat isthoroughly cooked, pre-cookthe meat in your kitchenjust before you put it on thebarbecue for that greatflavour.

When cooking foods onthe barbeque make sure toturn them regularly andmove them around the grillto ensure they are cookedevenly on all sides – thenremove them from the heatand place them on a cleanplate.

Remember - Steaks or

whole meat joints of beef orlamb can be served 'rare' aslong as they are cooked onthe outside as any harmfulbacteria will be on the out-side only, and not in thecentre.Mind that marinade!

If you like to marinateyour meat, make sure anymarinade used on raw meatis not then used as a sauceto coat vegetables or cookedmeat as it will contain rawmeat bacteria! If you wantto use marinade as a sauce,be sure to cook it in asaucepan and bring it to arolling boil before serving it.

Love those leftoversLeftovers should not be

left outside where they maybe in the sun and where in-sects and animals might beable to access them. As withall leftovers, cover the foodand allow it to cool in a coolplace (the kitchen) beforerefrigerating within twohours of cooking. The rule toremember for leftovers is -if in doubt, throw them out.

• For more informationon food safety andhealthy eating includingrecipes, visit www.safe-food.eu.

THE recent fine weather gave us a chance to dustdown those barbeques and spend a bit of qualitytime with family, friends and neighbours.
