services are unacceptable and uncalled for,” he said.

“The members of DFB put themselves on the line for the people of our city on a daily basis and they do not deserve to be treated like this.

“Attacks like this affect the entire community. This fire engine will have to be taken out of service for repair, which could create delayed response times for the community.

“Action needs to be taken to ensure that the youths are dealt with and this situation never happens again.”

Dublin City Council confirmed the attack to Northside People.

A spokesperson said there were no injuries to firefighters and the incident was reported to gardaí.

When the firefighters arrived at Hazelcroft Road in Finglas they discovered the blaze turned out to be tyres on fire, which was causing black smoke to blow towards the house. As the firefighters tackled the fire, a gang of youths aged 10-15 began hurling missiles. During the attack they threw a

glass bottle that smashed beside the fire engine and then a stone shattered the back window.

One firefighter narrowly escaped injury as he was taking off his breathing apparatus and was sitting right beside the window when it smashed.

Finglas Fianna Fáil councillor, David Costello, condemned the attack and called for action to be

Kids still arriving to school hungryCHILDREN in Dublin are still going to school hungry according to a survey released to coincide with the launch of the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards at Blakestown Community School in Dublin 15 last week.

Over 40 per cent of teachers surveyed said the number of children who are going hungry has increased in the last year. That figure increases to 55 per cent of teachers teaching in schools designated as DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools).

Many schools have introduced breakfast clubs to tackle the problem by providing pupils with a meal before class starts and 76

per cent of teachers believe more clubs are needed.

There are currently over 500 breakfast clubs operating in schools and other community settings across Ireland that provide children with breakfast before school in a calm environment.

The Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards are designed to reward and celebrate the hard work that schools and community groups put into running these important pre-school clubs.

Last week An Tánaiste, Joan Burton, joined children and teachers at Blakestown Community School to launch this year’s awards.

“I am an avid supporter of Breakfast clubs and in 2015 I

increased the funding available for the School Meals Programme by €2 million to €39 million,” she said.

“I know that if more schools could provide this service it means that children come to the classroom better equipped to succeed.

“This is something that is a priority for my Department. Officials in the Department are currently processing applications for this academic year and funding is being prioritised for breakfast clubs.”

The Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards are open to schools and community groups in Ireland with each club in with the chance of winning up to €1,500.

“It’s a crying shame that

so many children are going to school without having eaten a basic breakfast,” said Jim McNeill of Kellogg’s Ireland.

“That’s why Kellogg’s has supported 120 breakfast clubs across Ireland over the last three years.

“The Breakfast Club Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful club. ”

Entries for the awards can be made by sending an email to [email protected] from September 7 until October 15.

Winners will be invited to the National Breakfast Club Awards in Dublin City Centre on November 27.

FOR those of us of a certain age - and I’m still younger than Bono - it seems that U2 have been around for most of our lives.

The biggest rock band in the world have delighted their Irish fans by an-nouncing they will end the European leg of their ‘Innocence + Experience’ tour with two dates in Belfast and four in Dublin’s 3Arena.

While I admire the global success of the former Mount Temple students, I must confess that I’ve never been their biggest fan, although I did like them briefly around the time of ‘The Unforget-

table Fire’.As a treat to mark the completion of

my Inter Cert, my parents bought me a ticket for the band’s triumphant Croke Park concert. It was June 29, 1985, and Bono and the boys couldn’t put a foot wrong. I’m open to correction but I think In Tua Nua and The Alarm were also on the bill that memorable day. This was just two weeks before U2’s legendary appearance at ‘Live Aid’ where Bono’s on-stage antics raised eyebrows but ultimately catapulted the band to even greater heights of stardom.

The last U2 album I bought was ‘The Joshua Tree’, released to widespread acclaim in 1987. Time magazine declared they were ‘Rock’s Hottest Ticket’ as the band’s photo graced a front cover nor-mally reserved for world leaders.

Most observers would agree that U2 peaked - creatively at least - around this period. The follow-up, ‘Rattle And Hum’, had moments of greatness but more than its fair share of fillers.

In fairness to the band, they did try to stay relevant for the next few decades, unafraid to experiment or reinvent themselves - with mixed results.

The last time I saw U2 in action was when the ‘Popmart’ tour came to Lansdowne Road in the summer of 1997. The preceding ‘Pop’ album had alien-

ated many original fans and the show itself was heavily reliant on gimmickry - such as when the band emerged out of a giant lemon.

In a more recent move that divided opinion, the band gave their last album, ‘Songs of Innocence’, away for ‘free’ on iTunes. Happily, the U2 boys still made a few bob on the back of the Apple deal. But it was a high-risk gamble and Bono himself admitted that the gesture had annoyed people.

I mostly forget that I own the new

album. Some of the tracks occasionally pop into my ears if have the iPod on ‘shuffle’. The kindest word I can use to describe the new material is ‘inoffen-sive’.

But unlike rock dinosaurs such as The Who and The Rolling Stones, at least U2 are still trying to make new music and are not just content to dine out on former glories. There’s little doubt, however, that fans will be hoping to hear material from the band’s back cata-logue when they play their Irish dates in

November. The curious thing is: I don’t know many people within my circle of friends who would count themselves as U2 fans.

And yet the upcoming concerts are bound to be a sell-out.

Clearly, there is still an appetite to see the most successful Irish band of all time doing what they do best - few can touch them when it comes to blistering live performances.

For this reason alone, the upcoming concerts are deserving of all the hype.

Easter Rising stories soughtNORTHSIDERS are being called on to come forward and share their family’s Easter Rising stories.

The stories will feature in a non-profit multi-media project that’s using videos, podcasts and articles to tell personalised stories of the 1916 Rising.

The project by The Media group tells the little-known tales of ordinary men and women from Ireland’s turbulent revolutionary period.

The Media say there’s a wealth of family held museum quality archive material, including previously unseen photographs, prison letters and more, sitting undiscovered in attics and old biscuit tins around Dublin.

The stories From the 1916 project unexpectedly grew out of the feature documentary, A Terrible Beauty (www.1916film.com), which tells the story of the Easter Rising from three different perspec-tives, showing the human cost of the fighting on all sides.

“When we started working on A Terrible Beauty, we had no idea of where it would take us and the level of public interest in hearing the personal stories of ‘ordinary’ people caught up in the 1916 Rising,” said Colin Farrell, Project Direc-tor with Stories From 1916.

“Since we finished the film, the project has grown into something much more.”

Exhibition opens at Botanic GardensIRELAND’S largest outdoor sculpture exhibition has opened at the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin.

‘Sculpture in Context’, which showcases the work of Irish and international artists, will run until Friday, October 16.

The spectacular presentation is laid out in a variety of settings, winding through the 50 acres of landscaped grounds.

As you weave your way through the garden, you will discover sculptures in the most unexpect-ed and surprising places.

Ranging in size and materials, these works of art represent the richly diverse character of Irish and international contemporary sculpture today.

The aim of the exhibition is to provide a unique opportunity for works in venues outside of the normal gallery context.

The artwork is produced using a wide range of materials includ-ing bronze, ceramic, glass, cop-per, steel and stone.

Artist Kevin Pierce, from Ar-tane, who won the New Ireland Assurance Sculpture Award for his large outdoor work of distinc-tion in any medium, will showcase his ‘Contemporary Banana’ at the exhibition.

nity to view Ireland’s well estab-lished artists along with our most promising future artists and to

gain an insight into our country’s most exciting and contemporary art,” said Minister Harris.

“The National Botanic Gardens has a long association with this

exhibition and I am delighted to note the ‘New Ireland Assurance Sculpture Award’, introduced last year, is one of the largest prizes for sculpture in Ireland.

Admission to the exhibition is free and it is open on Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm.

Locals are urged to run, walk or jog for ConsoleNORTHSIDE runners and walkers are being asked to cross the Liffey on Saturday to join the fight against suicide by registering for the Laurels Charity Crew 10k Fun Run/Walk in aid of Console.

Olympic silver medallist Cllr Kenny Egan will be among those taking part in the event at 2pm in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, on Sat-urday September 19.

This is the third annual fun run/walk organised by the Lau-rels Charity Crew, and another huge turnout is expected for this year’s event.

Paul Kelly, CEO of national sui-cide prevention and bereavement charity Console, urged people to use the opportunity to run, walk and, most importantly, talk at this fantastic event.

“Two of Console’s central

themes are community and com-munication, and the 10k Fun Run/Walk is the perfect example of this,” said Paul.

“The 10k timed run or the walk may be important, but the most important part of the day is the talk.

“We’d like to ask people to get in touch with family members or friends that they may only see once in a while, and come togeth-er for a chat and either a run or a stroll at Corkagh Park.

“Our first two run/walks al-lowed us to buy and install defi-brillators for 29 schools and ten shops in the area, along with purchasing sports equipment for schools,” said Derek Cummins one of the race organisers.

Linda inspires locals to weight loss success

Linda, who has been running the Ballymun Slimming World group at the Axis Theatre for

nearly 11 months, has now collected a bronze, silver, ruby, sapphire and diamond

LINDA O’Connor, from Ballymun, has won many glittering awards for her great effort in helping people in Ballymun to lose weight.

award from Slimming World for inspiring hundreds of people in the local community to start losing weight and improve their health.

Linda, who lost nearly four stone with Slimming World, is now a multi-award winning consultant.

These awards are given to all consultants who care for more than 100 members who return weekly with superb weight losses and happiness they have found in their new healthier way of life.

Linda says: “Lots of people want to lose weight but they don’t know how or where to turn to for help.

“Often people have tried

losing weight before, either on their own or by following other diets, and failed.

“But it isn’t them who failed it’s the programme that failed them, either because the diet was too strict and impossible to sustain for more than a few days or because the support just wasn’t there.

“This leaves people thinking that they can’t do it – that they’ll never succeed with any diet – but at Slimming World they really can take control of their weight once and for all.”

Members in the Ballymun Tuesday evening group have lost 326 stone and 13lbs since end of October 2014.

“I know new members will be equally successful too,” says Linda.

“Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet, it’s too generous to be called a diet.

“It helps people make small, easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat so they make healthier choices and lose weight without ever going hungry or ever feeling like they’re missing out.

“And each week in group we make sure everyone’s motivated

for the week ahead. We share new recipes, advice and ideas for coping with challenges – and we have loads of fun!

“I know from my own

experience that it can be nerve-wracking to walk into a group for the first time but I can assure people that there’s no judgment, just respect and care.

“Every single person in the room has been there themselves, everyone understands exactly how it feels and everyone’s welcome at our group.”

Linda believes she has the best and most rewarding job in the world.

“There’s no better feeling than helping someone to achieve their dream weight and feel good about themselves, so winning these awards really is the icing on the cake,” she adds.

If you’d like to shine like Linda and her Slimming World members visit the Ballymun group, which meets every Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Axis.

Linda is also delighted to announce that from September 22, she will be opening a new morning group on the Tuesdays at 9.30am.

dubs have enough to see off the Kingdom

WELL, time to get our breaths back after two rip-roaring games between rivals Dublin and Mayo. As I expected, Dub-lin came through with their greater attacking threat and better players.

Mayo are again in heartbreak ridge and they will remain there

until they learn to lose and how to win. Their history is full of ‘Whats, Buts and Maybes’ and complaining about the opposi-tion and refereeing decisions,

Contrast this to the Dublins and Kerrys of this world who would get to the root cause of the defeat and go about rectifying the weakness.

Until Mayo look at why they have lost so many big games over the last 20 odd years, they will never progress as they never look at why they lost. The simple fact is: they are not good enough up front to do so.

Their main forwards are decent but unfortunately decent doesn’t cut the mustard in winning Sam.

It’s the same old problem for them that doesn’t look like changing any time soon as they still think they are the best team

TRIUMPH: Bernard Brogan pictured following Dublin’s replay victory over Mayo. PHOTO: STEPHEN McCARTHY

Opinion by Vinnie Murphy

in the land that have been hard done by.

They may have a point but they are like Dublin pre-Pat Gilroy: a very good side but lacking play-ers who will ‘kill’ you as quick as look at you.

Imagine if Mayo had a forward of Bernard Brogan’s calibre. He was well-marked over the two games but still scored 1-3 in the two matches and contributed to a host of other scores also.

Brogan scored more from play than both of Mayo’s key for-wards Cillian O’Connor and Aidan O’Shea. And he was probably Dublin’s third best forward over the two games. Enough said.

Now the dream final that most people want has come to pass.

On first look the Dubs have a huge edge in terms of pace and mobility. Kerry should have the

advantage in midfield, but it is up front we will have a game where some of the greatest forwards of this generation, or any other generation, will face off. Think Brogan v Gooch, McManamon v Darren O’Sullivan, Connolly v O’Donoghue, footballing nectar of the gods.

I think Dublin’s backline and forward line are bet-ter than Kerry’s and so this game will come down to how well Kerry fare on Clux-ton’s kick-outs.

Kerry remain the only county to crack them. The last two games between these teams were for the ages and it could be the same again this time round.

However, this will be the best team Ker-ry have faced in years as I think Dublin are mentally

s t r o n g e r now than

in 2011 or 2013.

So will Kerry play 15-15 as they traditionally do or will they bow to the fact if they go toe-to-toe with Dublin they can’t win and play a blanket? I can see

the colour of Spillane’s face now!

So buckle up as it’s going to be a rip-roaring game with plenty of attacking football.

Dublin are looking for their third title in five years while Ker-ry are aiming for two in a row.

I take the Dubs to win by five points. They have been tested twice now and have shown that their defensive system is robust. They will always score going for-ward and that should be enough to see off the Kingdom.

Also, Kerry have shown they are susceptible to pace, which Dublin have in spades. Come on ye Boys in Blue!

NO disrespect to any of the other

30 counties on the island: you just can-not beat a Dublin versus Kerry All-Ireland Final.

This Sunday, the two giants of Gaelic

football will lock horns for the 13th

time in an All-Ireland final (Kerry have eight

wins to Dublin’s four), and the promise of an-

other classic is in the offing.

The word ‘classic’ can be bandied about with little thought given, but in this case, the word has substance.

Take for example the two most recent championship encounters between these fierce opponents, a rivalry that was at its apex in the 1970s when Kevin Heffernan and Mick O’Dwyer managed beautifully assembled teams that served up some of the best foot-ball ever seen at Croke Park.

In the 2011 decider, Dublin were under huge pressure hav-ing not brought Sam home to the capital since their 1995 win over Tyrone.

Kerry on the other hand were winning All-Irelands for fun and busy adding to their haul which now stands at 37. Dublin have won 24 All-Irelands incidentally.

In a thrilling encounter, Dub-lin won 1-12 to 1-11 with Parnell’s goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton scoring that memorable point in added on time, which will live long in the memory of every GAA fan in the county.

Super-sub Kevin McManamon was the catalyst for the victory though, coming off the bench and marauding through the Kerry de-fence to raise a green flag when the match was slipping away

from Pat Gilroy’s team. Lightning struck twice for the

Dubs two years later when the same player came off the bench again and scored a crucial late goal when Dublin, now managed by Jim Gavin, defeated the King-dom 3-18 to 3-11.

All of Kerry’s goals came in the first half of a match that will go down as one of the greatest of all time for the intensity and quality of the football, the superb score taking on both sides, and general ebb and flow that you’d expect in any sporting thriller.

Dublin, of course, went on to defeat Mayo by a point in the 2013 decider to make it two All-Irelands in three years.

The big question now is: can Jim Gavin’s men make it three All-Irelands in five years, or will Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s supremely talented team win back-to-back All-Irelands for the first time since 2006-2007?

Dublin have shown their mettle after coming through two tough games against Mayo while Kerry overcame Tyrone in the semis and also had a bit of a scrap with their

neighbours Cork before emerg-ing from the Provincials with the Munster Championship in the bag.

A lot of GAA fans will most likely agree that the 2015 cham-pionship hasn’t been one of the best given the amount of hugely one-sided games, the increasing gap between the elite half dozen counties and the rest, and of course, the scourge of the blan-ket defence.

However, if there is one fixture that can rescue a championship season, it’s Dublin versus Kerry.

Minister vows to act on student accommodation

The Demand & Supply report found that demand for student accommodation will increase from nearly 168,000 in 2014 to almost 193,000 in 2024.

The report was written in the context of recent Government policy initiatives on construction and social housing.

Commenting on the publica-tion, Minister O’Sullivan said: “There have been clear concerns in recent times regarding the availability of accommodation for students in certain areas, and that’s why I asked the Higher Edu-cation Authority to report on this issue.

“The report published today sets out clearly that the demand for student accommodation out-strips supply in certain areas and

MINISTER for Education & Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, has welcomed the publication of a report on student accommodation.

The report found that demand for student accommodation will increase from nearly 168,000 in 2014 to 193,000 in 2024.▪

will continue to do so in the com-ing years.

“There are 13 useful recom-mendations in this report. I am beginning work straight away with Government colleagues and stakeholders to explore ways to increase the availability of student accommodation where needed, including by developing the recommendations made in this report as well as exploring other potential options.

“These recommendations in-clude capital financing, tax con-siderations and planning issues, as well as support for the rent-a-room scheme.”

Minister O’Sullivan has an-nounced two immediate actions to tackle the problem including the immediate establishment of an inter-departmental steering group.

“This group will be chaired by the Deputy Secretary General in my Department with overall re-sponsibility for higher education and will include officials from the Higher Education Authority, De-partment of Finance, Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and the Department of Environ-ment and Local Government,” she added.

“This group will provide a co-ordinating mechanism to ensure

low USI to develop their website, homes.usi.ie, to communicate more effectively to students and homeowners and to carry out re-search into this important issue.

“In the longer term, the Govern-ment is committed to addressing the housing shortage through the Construction 2020 strategy. This will not resolve all of our prob-lems immediately, but I am con-fident that the implementation of Construction 2020 will provide us with a sustainable housing stock in the medium to longer term.”

Tom Boland, CEO of the Higher Education Authority, also wel-comed the report.

“Ensuring that both domestic and international learners have suitable accommodation while studying at our colleges is essen-tial to meet growing demand,” he said.

“We look forward to playing our part on the new interdepartmen-tal working group to seek ways to ensure that students have access to appropriate accommodation.”

USI President, Kevin Dono-ghue, said the student union wel-comed the Minister’s comments.

“This will allow us to provide additional space for students that is quality and affordable,” he said. “This action shows that the Minister is taking the issue of student accommodation seriously and recognizes the work already undertaken by USI.”

There have been clear concerns

in recent times over the availability of accommodation for students in certain areas.

that the higher education institu-tions have access to information on new potential funding and de-livery models.”

The second action announced is the awarding of a grant of €30,000, which will be provided by the HEA to the Union of Stu-dents in Ireland to progress short-term solutions for students in need of accommodation.

“In the short-term, one of the best options to increase supply is for people to rent a spare room in their home to students,” the Min-ister explained.

“It’s a win-win situation, as students get accommodation and homeowners can earn up to €12,000 a year tax-free doing this. I know that students’ unions ran very good information cam-paigns about this last year, such as the USI’s ‘Homes for Study’.

educationFamilies losing chunk of time on busy school runsTHE schools are back, roads are busier and getting ready and out to school on time is now top priority for most households. A sur-vey by motoring solutions specialists, easytrip, has revealed that 55 per cent of us take from 15 to 45 minutes to get ready in the morning while 44 per cent say it can take 50 minutes or more.

In the rush to get out the door, respondents to the survey re-vealed what many of us already know - that not all journeys go ac-cording to plan.

Almost 40 per cent of those surveyed said homework is for-gotten usually at least once every couple of weeks while 29 per cent of parents admitted to skipping breakfast to get kids to school on time.

One in 10 said they have for-gotten to feed a pet when running out the door and 13 per cent have sent kids off to school with their uniform inside out at least once in the past.

Eleven per cent of respondents admitted to forgetting a child’s lunch on a daily basis, with one third admitting to doing so at least once a month.

The car journey to school can be an eventful one according to the survey, which reveals the regular goings-on that take place in the back seat on the way to school in the morning.

A total of 63 per cent of chil-dren on school runs argue with their siblings every day in the car while 25 per cent finish getting dressed (putting on ties, shoes, socks) in the car at least once a week.

Thirteen per cent fix their hair every day during the journey and 11 per cent finish homework on a daily basis during the trip to school.

The easytrip survey found that 78 per cent of families use the car as the main means of transport to get their children to school. This figure is 14 per cent down on stats

released this time last year where easytrip found that 92 per cent drove their children to school.

The majority (56 per cent) of respondents travel five kilome-tres or less from home to the school gates each day. However, one in 10 travel over 16km from home to school.

Two thirds of families take less than 15 minutes to complete the school run while 22 per cent state that the journey time can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.

“Our survey has revealed that getting back into the school rou-tine can be a bit of a challenge, in particular in getting ready and to school on time,” said Colin Dela-ney, general manager, easytrip.

“It can be a rush and quite stressful for many parents and their kids.

“Our advice to busy dads and mums would be to make it as has-sle free as possible and organise as much as you can the night be-fore.”

spiritual retreat in have green fingers because in many ways a Zen garden is not really about gardening at all. In fact, once it has been laid out it should as far as possible be just left alone.

Let’s take a look at how the Japanese used the nature of Zen to enhance their spirituality.

From as early as the 5th cen-tury they trekked into the moun-tains to relax and enjoy the surroundings. At the most pictur-esque spots, white pebbles were laid around rocks or trees. These places became the first Zen gar-dens.

By the 10th century, under the growing influence of Buddhism, the principles of Yin and Yang became increasingly important. Yin and Yang stand for the nega-tive and positive, the male and female. These opposites should always be balanced so they can

According to the theories of Zen Buddhism, man should try and live in harmony with himself and his surroundings. A Zen gar-den is basic and abstract.

So if you want to create a peaceful haven in your garden you’re going to have to start with some simple thinking.

With a minimum of accessories a maximum impact is obtained. Less is more. The effect is en-hanced by restraint and that is what makes the Zen garden inter-esting.

Meditation is one way of learn-ing to find Zen harmony, and a garden designed along some par-ticular guidelines is the perfect place for some soul searching.

In fact, a Zen garden is the pre-eminent place to find tranquillity and harmony with your surround-ings without any distractions.

And don’t worry if you don’t

SOMETIMES relaxing in the back garden on a peaceful, warm sum-mer’s day has an almost spiritual feel to it. But if you want to take the experience onto a truly mystical level all year round, you need to create a Zen garden.

play a crucial, constructive role in life.

While well kept Irish gardens are often characterised by a strict symmetry, this is totally absent in a Zen garden. Tranquillity in the Zen garden is not achieved by or-der and repetition but by a natu-ral approach.

‘Even’ numbers are never used. For example, groups of 15 rocks might be divided into smaller groups of three, five and seven.

While they may look like ran-dom groupings, together they do create a certain unity.

Symbolism plays an important role too. Raked sand, for example, is used to represent the ocean and the absence of thought, while running water is the source of life.

There are many very interest-ing books that you can read that will explain the background to Zen in more detail, but even without reading more on the subject you can easily create your own medi-tation garden in the Zen style.

As with any DIY or gardening

project, you should try and put your ideas down on paper before you start.

Large boulders are typical in a Zen garden and you’ll want to know exactly where to place them, and not have to drag them around the garden later in search of a suitable spot.

After the paper planning you’re ready to begin the practical work, by covering all the areas that are

Your garden can be a haven of relaxation.▪

your own Zen back gardengoing to be sand or gravel with a permeable membrane to stop any weeds from coming through.

Next, put major features, such as dry riverbeds or running wa-tercourses, in place before turn-ing to the creation of the actual garden.

This is where you choose and plant the greenery. Keep in mind that most suitable plants for a Zen garden will prefer a slightly acidic soil type.

You’ll need to keep an Orien-tal feel to the garden so some tall bamboo is an absolute must. Always place bamboo in a large,

bottomless tub as this constrains their roots and prevents your beautifully laid out Zen garden from turning into a bamboo for-est a few years down the road.

In a sunny corner, place a standard Azalea, or a Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum Atropur-purea) with delicate red foliage. These look really good next to a small stream.

To add a vertical element, try a Korean Fir (Abies koreana) or an ornamental cherry, like the co-lumnar growing Japanese Cherry (Prunus serrulata Amangova) or a Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis.

This is a cherry that flowers in winter and again in spring.

A Magnolia is also very well suited to a garden like this.

Ferns are perfect for the more shady areas in the garden. Plant them in odd numbers for the best effect. Single Hostas can be plant-ed in sunny as well as in shady spots and always look fantastic. In essence, allowing individual plants to show their beauty, away from the close competition of others, creates the Zen garden effect.

When the planting is done, you can enjoy your Zen garden.

Renault’s Captur Signatureis their supermini crossoverSeán Creedon

IT’S often said that we should all learn from our mistakes as we go through life. The last time I drove the Renault Captur I foolishly ignored a beeping sound as I left the car; I had left the lights on and the battery went fl at in 90 minutes.

Thankfully I learned my lesson

and there was no problem this time round with the lights as I drove a fancy version of the Captur, the Signature. The test car came in a very attractive Flame Red with a black roof and it certainly attracted a few envious glances in the supermarket car park.

The Signature version comes with 17-inch ‘explore’ alloys, chrome exterior and two-tone paint as standard. Inside the Flame Red is extended to the dash and there is a similar-coloured red border around the infotainment system, which now includes Sat Nav. That red border will defi nitely attract your gaze

to the infotainment area, which is where the music is!

There are lot of other extras in the Signature like parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, cruise control, reversing camera and part-leather upholstery, making for a very attractive looking small SUV

The Captur is a product of the Renault-Nissan Alliance and is Renault’s fi rst-ever supermini crossover; it looks a bit like Nissan’s Juke or maybe Qashqai, which is nothing to be ashamed of as every car company seem to be building cars that look like Nissan’s best seller. The Captur is based on the Renault Clio, but with a slightly wider track.

Renault describes the car as a blend of MPV, SUV and family hatchback and they say the Captur should appeal to a particularly broad spectrum of customer tastes.

It should do well as more people are opting for smaller SUVs right now.

I drove a 1.5-litre diesel version which was very frugal. For the

fi rst few days it looked like the fuel gauge was locked at full, but the gauge did eventually drop down.

You get a decent-sized boot and there is an adjustable fl oor shelf which is very useful if you want to store items out of view of any would-be thieves.

The stop-start technology worked very well and overall I enjoyed my time in the Captur Signature.

If you have your hands full of

shopping when exiting, the car will lock automatically once you have the key in your pocket. And it can be opened by pressing a neat black button on the door handle.

Prices for a regular Captur start at €19,590, while the Signature with all those extras starts at €22,190. Like many car companies now Renault has their own bank for loans and you can get the Signature for a PCP o er of €219 per month.

WEEKLY ACROSS DUBLIN

the lack of growth in wages is not a big problem yet

cutting costs. In most cases, it doesn’t matter

how much you get paid in gross terms, but how much you take home and more importantly how far your wages stretch.

If inflation rises bring higher wage demands this will lead to the costs of our goods and serv-ices rising, damaging our com-petitiveness and potentially our economy.

Rather than wait for this to happen, we should act now to boost pay packets and cut costs in our economy so that standards of living can rise without wages having to go up dramatically.

The Government has signalled a cut in taxes in the upcoming budget, and this should be con-tinued in subsequent years to give back more to people who are working hard (especially those on

The reports neglected to say, that at €697.52 the average weekly wage was only marginally above the corresponding figures for the whole of 2011 (€690).

The fact is we have seen wages stay pretty static over the last five years. However, because of a muted rise in the cost of living over that period (inflation in the economy was down 0.2 per cent last month and up only 1.9 per cent since 2011) this lack of wage growth is not seen as a big prob-lem - yet.

The European Central Bank’s stated objective is growth in infla-

tion by about 2 per cent per year and they are currently pumping €1.1 trillion into the system to achieve that.

If they have their way and in-flation grows while wages remain static, we could be in for some in-dustrial unease here.

After years of economic strife most Irish people deserve more in their pockets, (we are some of the most productive workers in the world and work some of the longest hours in Europe).

However, the discussion on wages has focused solely on in-creasing income as opposed to

Cormac Spencer

LAST month headlines heralded the return of the pay rise citing wage growth in the order of 1.8 per cent year on year, with some sectors strongly outstripping that figure (particularly IT and Ad-ministration).

Wages have stayed pretty static over the last five years. ▪

lower wages). In terms of cutting costs, first

on the list is the cost of having a roof over your head. A huge portion of Irish incomes goes on paying for accommodation, and in recent years these costs have only gone one way.

Increasing the allowable height of buildings in our cities, utilis-ing derelict spaces over shops in the heart of the city and taxing land owners who are intention-ally holding on to sites without developing them in the hope of selling on at a higher price are

simple ways that landlords and the Government could act to re-duce these costs.

We must also look at the cost of healthcare and indeed child-care in the country which shows no signs of abating.

The cost of doing business can also be easily reduced, the ben-efits of which could be passed on to consumers and used to hire more staff.

These measures cost the Gov-ernment very little but could have a significant impact on quality of life without requiring huge rises

in wages. Our economy is growing again,

and wages will rise in the coming years, but by focusing more on the cost of living, we can better address the underlying problems of our economy, keep competitive and vastly improve our people’s standard of living.
