One third of the clients thatthe Finglas Addiction SupportTeam (FAST) now deals withare those suffering from ex-tremely worrying side-affectsfrom head-shop products.

Mephedrone, marketed asbath salts, is associated with themajority of health problemsthat have led terrified teenagersto turn to FAST for help andadvice.

Tom Bissett, coordinator ofFAST’s cocaine service, saidthey are seeing more and morepeople presenting with persist-ent hallucinations, paranoia,anxiety, nose bleeds and chestpains as many as six days afterthey’ve taken the legal highs.

“We have seen an upsurgein the number of clients we dealwith,” he told Northside People.

“We’re seeing people thatwould never have come into usbefore – young people whoaren’t regular drug users butthey’ve experimented withthese legal highs.

“They are suffering frompanic attacks, depression, suici-dal thoughts and chest pains be-cause the chemical componentsin the mephedrone restricts theheart.

“These clients are usuallyvery scared and have often told

their parents before coming tous. It just shows how scaredthese teenagers are becausethese symptoms might be con-tinuing for as long as five or sixdays after they’ve taken theproduct.”

Unfortunately, FAST onlydeals with over 18s but there’sanecdotal evidence to suggest toteenagers as young as 13 havebeen dabbling in head shopproducts.

Hallucinations are more ex-treme in products that containsalvia, according to the cocaineservice co-ordinator.

“I’ve heard of one personwho smoked it and felt like hisface was melting,” Mr Bissettexplained.

“Another person who hasn’tused drugs in years said he got ajoint from a head-shop and suf-fered hallucinations for hoursafterwards.

“Heavy drug users we dealwith have also said that the sideaffects and the ‘high’ they gotfrom head-shop products werefar worse than anything they’dexperienced before.”

Surge in ‘legal high’ reactionscontd from page 1

Mephedrone - sometimessold as snow blow, stardust orplant food - is likened to ecstasyor ‘E’ as it’s a stimulant whichcauses a feeling of euphoria.

The side affects include anincreased paranoid state and anover stimulation of the heart andnervous system that can causefits. The psychotropic drug issnorted, egested or injected.

Professor Joe Barry of theDepartment of Public Healthand Primary Care at Trinity Col-lege recently sent out a circularto health care professionals ad-vising them of the incidences ofpatients presenting to A&E’swith symptoms associated withhead shop products.

“In the past week to twoweeks three young men havebeen admitted to hospital inDublin with myopericarditis (in-flammation of the heart muscle

and lining of the heart),” he said.“In each case the patients

gave a history of ingestingmephedrone.

“The inflammations in thesecases are expected to resolve butpatients were admitted becauseof abnormal ECGs.

“It is not surprising thatmephedrone is cardio-toxic as itis a stimulant not unlike co-caine.”

He added: “It would be im-portant to inform attendees atservices and the wider commu-nity of this potential further riskto the heart from mephedrone.”

Local councillor Dessie Ellis(SF) said it’s obvious that the in-crease in patients coincides withemergence of head-shops.

“There is no doubt that moreand more people of all ages areusing these legal highs becausethey are readily available,” hesaid.

“It’s a very worrying situa-tion that the Government needsto do more to tackle and regu-late.”

Tenants of one of the last re-maining towers - Joseph Plun-kett - were without a lift for overa week and they joined withother protesters in a noisydemonstration on Ballymun’sMain Street last Friday (April23).

About 60 demonstratorsstaged a sit-in at the council’s of-fices. Council officials then an-nounced that a team ofengineers would be deployedthat afternoon to fix the lift atPlunkett Tower, the tallest of theblocks without a service.

Natasha Dempsey, who liveson the 14th floor of PlunkettTower with her two-year-old tod-dler and nine-year-old daughter,explained how she felt powerlessand stranded in her flat lastweek.

“I had to send my daughterto stay with her grandparents be-cause she suffers from asthma

Judge McCartan rejectedthis, saying everything that hasbeen said on his behalf is “anecho” of what was said in previ-ous sentence hearings. Judgehas 51 previous convictions, in-cluding 31 for burglary.

He pleaded guilty to sevencounts of burglary and twocounts of criminal damage atDublin sports clubs and hotelsbetween April and August 2009.

“It’s an absolute nightmaretrying to get the buggy up anddown the stairs to take the babyto crèche each day.

“I fell the other day trying tocarry it up. By the time I got tothe flat all I could do was sit andcry for about half an hour. Weshouldn’t have to live like this.”

The mum-of-two explainedhow leaving the flat twice in aday is “simply not an option”.

“I have to stay out and waituntil the baby is finished crèche,”she said.

“We go to family for lunchor eat out which is costing a for-tune and it’s only after the babyhas had her nap that we headback to the tower to face the 24flights of stairs.

“Getting food shopping isalso impossible as carrying thebuggy and baby up the stairs isdifficult enough.”

Natasha is not alone in herdaily struggles at Joseph Plun-kett Tower.

“There are a lot of elderlypeople that live high up in theblock and there’s a man on theeighth floor who’s in a wheel-chair,” Natasha said.

“How is he supposed toleave his home?”

While the lifts of JosephPlunkett Tower were out of ac-tion for over a week, residents inblocks such as those on Bal-butcher Lane have been withoutlifts for 11 weeks.

Frustrated residents who feelthey are being used as “pawns”took to the streets of Ballymunlast week to highlight the situa-tion.

Earlier this month, DublinCity Council told Northside Peo-ple that the emergency serviceswould be brought in to fix thelifts and help residents getting toand from their flats. However,

that never happened.Local councillor John Lyons

(Lab) described the council’s in-action as “beyond a joke”.

“It’s completely unaccept-able and inexcusable that thishas gone on so long,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing thatthe council never brought in thearmy like they said the wouldand that residents have been thepawns in all this.”

Local councillor PaulMcAulliffe (FF) called for theparties involved in the dispute toresolve the matter immediately.

“I can’t allow older peoplewho are isolated in their flats tobe used in furthering any dis-pute,” he stated.

“I am calling on the councilto proceed as quickly as possiblewith the repairs so that peoplecan get back to normal.

“We just can’t expect peopleto be climbing up and down 14storeys every time they need togo out.”

Sports club burglar jailedA BALLYMUN burglar who specialises in breaking intosports clubs was jailed by Judge Patrick McCartan at DublinCircuit Criminal Court last week “until the penny dropssolidly”.

Development Centre on OscarTraynor Road, a facility fortraining young sports people,and stole e900 from the till.

He forced his way inthrough the roof while staffwere in the building, causinge1,300 worth of damage in theprocess.

He was arrested soon afterand denied he stole anything,claiming he was on the premisesto use the bathroom.

He was released on bail andwent on to target six more busi-nesses including the Port-marnock Rugby Club, MalahideRugby Club and NaomhMearnóg GAA club in Port-marnock from which he stolee490.

He also burgled the AlsaaSports Club near Dublin Airporttwice. The second time he triedto burgle it he was seen by anoff-duty Garda trying to get intothe kitchen and was arrested.

Mr Rea said his client was achronic drug addict who livedwith his partner and three chil-dren. He said since Judge hasbeen in prison he has been try-ing to keep away from drugs andhas been a well behaved pris-oner.

Chaos erupts for grounded golfersWE HAD just enjoyed our annual seven-day break on theAlgarve, sampling some of the finest golf courses in Europe.

A great week of bliss, beerand birdies ended when threeof our party of eight golfersboarded the Wednesday nightflight back home, while the fiveof us remaining enjoyed asumptuous Portuguese mealand readied ourselves for ourreturn flight the following

morning.But Thursday morning –

and a previously unheard ofvolcano in Iceland with aname that sounded like a badScrabble move – had otherplans for us. An early morningtext from a colleague alerted usto the fact that something very

unusual had occurred, and thatour flight was grounded.Surely another wind-up, wethought. One glance at teletextconfirmed otherwise.

After a trip to the airport toassess our options, we soon re-alised we would not be goinganywhere soon. Our nextavailable flight would be twodays later, so we endeavouredto make the best of our bor-rowed time. And so, our clubscame back out.

ScorchingThe Portuguese weather

had other ideas however, withlightening storms and viciousrain showers replacing thescorching sun. It added to anotherworldly atmosphere inthe resort, and the news thatall flights had been groundedfor a further number of daysstarted the panic ball rolling inearnest, as people realised thatthe situation was about to spi-ral out of control. The scenebegan to resemble the fall ofSaigon.

With conflicting reportsfrom the airlines, getting hardinfo was as difficult as catchingsmoke with a fishing net, andso – after some urging fromback home to ‘think outsidethe box on this one’ – westarted ringing, texting andemailing (in fact, we juststopped short of using carrierpigeons) ad nauseum in an ef-

fort to co-ordinate some sort ofescape by land.

Believe me, this was farmore difficult than it sounds.The ultimate goal was to get tonorthern France near the fer-ries – but places on the boatswere as rare as hens’ teeth.

Eventually, however, we re-ceived our reservation confir-mation. We felt like the kidswho had found the golden tick-ets in Willy Wonka’s chocolatebars. Now, how do we getthere?

Train tickets? All gone. Bustickets? All reserved. Thingswere getting primitive and Iwas waiting for someone tosuggest we buy mules.

But then, out of the blue, adriver named Jaoa (soon to benamed ‘Joe 190’) from our carrental company returned ourcall and confirmed he coulddrive us through Europe in anine-seater van. Finally, wehad our way out.

A couple called Pat andTerry who we had met, alongwith their daughter Fiona,joined us on our exodus and, at6am on Monday morning, westarted one of the longest daysof our lives as we clocked upsome 2,000km to Rennes nearParis, traversing three countriesin the process – Portugal,Spain and France – stoppingonly for fuel, fags and food, aswell as calls of nature that re-fused to be diverted to voice-

mail.We soon realised that the

rules of the road in Portugaland Spain were more akin to aserving suggestion on a packetof noodles – they could be fol-lowed, or you could simply doyour own thing.

Juggernauts wishing toovertake politely nudged us onthe rear bumper.

Some 22 grueling hourslater, we were rewarded with anon-nutritious fast food mealand a French hotel that seem-ingly takes reservations but hasno intention of honouringthem, seeing as its doors werelocked and all the staff hadgone home when we arrived.

A further hour of searchingand finally we found some-where to rest our heads. Awarm bottle of rosé gleanedfrom a suitcase at 5am nevertasted so good.

InfamousFinally, to Cherbourg, and

we boarded one of the most fa-mous – or infamous – boatrides in recent Irish history, ifonly for the ‘who’s who’ on thepassenger manifest.

A group photo may havelooked similar to a modern dayIrish version of the Beatles fa-mous ‘Sergeant Peppers’album cover. We assumed thelast time most of these people

were on a ferry the recently de-ceased Celtic Tiger was just akitten.

Following an 18-hour ferrycrossing, sleeping on seats andsuffering the childish antics ofa drunken airline crew (funnyhow you can’t behave like thaton a plane, isn’t it?), we finallyarrived at the promised land –Wexford.

Not so much the land ofmilk and honey, more so theland of stout and puddin’. Butwe were home.

And if that damned vol-cano misbehaves again, homecould be where all our holidayswill be based for some time!

The news comes just amonth after the company an-nounced it would create a sim-ilar amount of full timepositions in Dublin over thenext three years.

Staff at the company’s Mul-huddart campus were informedlast Wednesday, (April 21) thatthe technology giant is seekinga number of voluntary redun-dancies.

The company did not put afigure on how many jobs it islooking to cut, but it’s believedupwards of 200 staff may leaveIBM under the scheme.

The computer manufac-turer has entered a one-monthstatutory consultation periodwith staff about the cuts, whichfollows the completion of thetransfer of high-end server

manufacturing to Singaporefrom the Dublin campus.

Staff were made aware ofthe transfer back in February2009, when the company an-nounced that it was cutting 120jobs.

The move is aimed at plac-ing IBM closer to its growthmarkets and suppliers while in-creasing its operational effi-ciency and cost savings.

According to a spokesper-son for the company, IBM willcontinue to manufacture in Ire-land and it will continue tolook at “new missions and op-portunities” for the Mulhud-dart campus as they arise.

“The site will continue toprovide low-end and mid rangepower-based systems manufac-turing and fulfillment for Eu-

Mum’s plea to councilover ‘damp’ home

A FINGLAS woman says she can no longer cope withliving in her “completely unsuitable and damp-ridden”council home.

“The problem is going onfor years and no amount ofcleaning and damp preventionpaint makes any difference be-cause it keeps coming back.

“The council have come outa few times to assess the prob-lem but they keep saying it’scondensation.

“How could it be condensa-tion when I have an open airvent in the kitchen?

“I think the damp is startingto affect our health because Ihave trouble breathing and my17-year-old son is also havingchest pains and breathing diffi-culties.

“While I can’t say for surethat it’s related to the problem,there’s no question that the levelof dampness in our kitchen isnot good for our health.”

A spokesperson for DublinCity Council said that three sep-arate inspections were carriedout to examine the problem in

Ms Burke’s accommodation.“The tenant was advised

on each occasion that theproblem was not damp butcondensation and was ad-vised to uncover the vents toallow proper air circulation inthe kitchen,” she told North-side People.

“This tenant is also cur-rently on the transfer list withlow points and would not beeligible for an offer of accom-modation.

“The tenant has previ-ously sent in medical detailswhich were assessed by theChief Medical Officer whodecides if medical priority fora transfer is warranted. Nopriority was awarded on thebasis of the documentationsubmitted.

“The tenant should sendin an up-to-date medical sub-mission which clearly outlinesfrom her health professionalshow her current accommoda-tion is not suitable for hermedically.”

The spokesperson added:“Any further submission canthen be referred to the Med-ical Referee for assessment.”

IBM job loss shock THERE was another jobs blow for Dublin 15 last weekwhen it was revealed that IBM is planning to shed a re-ported 200 jobs.

DUBLINERS take an amazing 450million photos a year or 1.2 millionevery day according to a new survey.

The average Dub takes 38 photographsa month the survey taken by Behaviour &Attitudes on behalf of Fujifilm Irelandfound.

Half the population of Dublin regardlooking at printed photographs as an im-portant aspect of reminiscing about happyor memorable times – although looking atold pictures is significantly more importantto women than it is to men.

The report also revealed that the major-ity of Irish adults - eight out of ten - are‘special occasion’ photographers, with 15per cent being weekly or more regular,mostly younger photographers.

Despite the increasing use of digitalphotography, 40 per cent of Irish adultshave a preference for looking at printed pic-tures compared to 17 per cent who prefer

looking at photos on computer screen.The survey was undertaken to mark the

re-launch of Fujifilm Ireland’s new websiteat Fujipix.ie which enables digital camerausers to upload their favourite images tostore, share or order prints of their snaps.

The new site allows integration with so-cial networking websites like Flickr andMySpace so members can import or exportimages from their accounts to print on Fu-jipix.ie.

Alice Howley of Fujifilm says the Irishreally love getting their cameras out.

“The old adage ‘a picture paints a thou-sand words’ seems to resonate stronglywith Irish consumers across all ages and inparticular when reminiscing about happyand memorable times,” she said.

Surge in animalcruelty calls

THE Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty toAnimals (ISPCA) has reported a dramatic surge incalls relating to animal cruelty this year.

Calls to the National Animal Helpline have increased by68 per cent when compared to 2009 with almost 3,300 callsanswered in first few months of the year.

Last year there were under 2,000 calls for the same pe-riod and spokesperson Carmel Murray says the upward trendis increasing.

“The ISPCA is receiving more calls every year relating toanimal cruelty,” she said.

“In 2008, we received 5,576 calls and this almost doubledin 2009 to 10,352.”

The ISPCA, in conjunction with the Gardaí, deal withthe largest number of animal related cruelty prosecutioncases within Ireland. Cruelty to horses is becoming a majorissue for the organisation, with calls to its helpline specifi-cally relating to equine abuse increasing from 453 in 2008 to1,141 last year.

The ISPCA also deals with inadequate welfare legisla-tion, the plight of circus animals, exotic animal legislation,fur farming and intensive breeding establishments in Ireland.

Ms Murray said the animal welfare group is always look-ing for funds and is calling on women to support them in theupcoming Flora Mini Marathon.

“We are always grateful for donations from the public tohelp keep our organisation up and running and the FloraWomen’s Mini Marathon is a great fun way to help raisefunds with friends or family,” she said.

THE European Parliament’s monthly move from Brusselsto Strasbourg has again come under fire from MEPswhose travel plans were frustrated by the Icelandic ashcloud.

The grounding of flights across Europe for sixdays meant over 300 MEPs were unable to make itto the April plenary session, and the Parliamentwas unable to carry out its normal business ofvoting on legislative proposals.

Of the 408 MEPs who managed to get toStrasbourg, hundreds had to undertake lengthyjourneys by ferry, train, bus or car, at an as yetunknown extra cost to the taxpayer.

The travel chaos was grist to the mill of agrowing number of MEPs insisting on a sin-

gle location for the European Parliament.Irish MEPs Nessa Childers and Liam Aylward were among

almost 200 MEPs who wrote to the European Council Presidentlast month arguing that the monthly commute can no longer be

environmentally or financially justified.“The monthly trip costs over e200 million a year,

and this week’s travel will cost far more because ofthe complicated journeys forced upon many MEPs,”said Ms Childers.

“Meanwhile there’s a perfectly good parliamentchamber lying empty in Brussels. This nonsensewould not be tolerated in industry and it shouldno longer be tolerated in politics when the use oftaxpayers’ money is concerned.”

AFTER a week of wondering whether or notthey would be able to travel, six Dublin sec-ondary school pupils flew to Strasbourg inFrance last Wednesday (April 21) to repre-sent Ireland at the European Parliament.

Gerard Sheridan and Graham Hannigan (Castle-knock Community College), Katie Connolly(Coláiste Bríde), Andrew Dowling (Clonkeen Col-lege), Jennifer Gardner (St Dominic’s College) andChloe Kelly (Manor House School) were there totake part in the Euroscola event, where studentsfrom all over Europe got to sample what it’s liketo be an MEP for day.

The Dublin teenagers joined a group of 23 Irishstudents selected as winners of this year’s Gradu-ate Online Youth Quiz, an educational websitesponsored by the EU institutions.

Site co-ordinator Martin Heneghan said about30,000 Irish students a year are logging on to thesite (www.graduate.ie) to take part in the weeklyquiz, answering EU-related questions ranging frommusic, sport, politics or health and safety.

Speaking after he saw the students off atDublin Airport, Mr Heneghan said there was greatexcitement when the trip was finally confirmed.

“It went from deflation to elation; they hadpractically given up hope of going because of theflight disruption so they were thrilled to be head-ing off,” he added.

The Euroscola event allows students to debateand vote on topics in the Parliament chamber withother European teenagers, and learn how the EUimpacts on their lives.

PLANS for a European equivalent tothe International Monetary Fund aregaining ground in Brussels as leadersrealise the need for a mechanism todeal with economic crises like thatwhich has afflicted Greece in the lastmonth.

The European Commission has signalledthat it will draw up a proposal before theend of June for a eurozone emergency fundto help states at financial risk.

Speaking in Strasbourg this week,Dublin MEP and former Lord Mayor GayMitchell said a European Monetary Fundwould allow EU countries to set lendingterms according to their own needs, as op-posed to the international criteria set bythe IMF.

“It would be a way of repatriating fundsto Europe that are tailored for Europeancountries,” he said.

Ford celebrates latest sales figures THE stylish, latest generationFord Fiesta was officially Eu-rope's best-selling for the firstquarter of 2010, according tothe latest figures from theworld's leading provider ofautomotive data and intelli-gence, JATO Dynamics.

According to the figures com-piled by JATO 68,630 Ford Fiestaswere sold in March across Europe, a25.8 per cent increase from the samemonth last year, and almost 11,800units ahead of its nearest rival, theVolkswagen Golf.

In the first quarter of 2010,JATO records that 140,496 Ford Fi-estas were sold – over 5,400 unitsahead of its nearest rival.

"Fiesta simply outpaced VWGolf, with its move to pole positionparticularly due to its strong Marchsales in the UK and Italy where 57per cent of all Fiestas sold (11,251)were LPG-powered," Ingvar Svig-gum, Ford of Europe's Vice Presi-dent for Marketing, Sales andService, said.

"Last year was a great year forthe Fiesta despite the economic con-ditions, but this year has been evenstronger so far March sales of the Fi-esta were the highest we've everrecorded for any Ford model in asingle month in Europe."

Making a big room larger than lifeQ: My husband and I recentlybuilt our first home and we’rein the process of decorating it.Everything was going accordingto plan until I started consider-ing options for our new livingroom. It’s a very large roomwith bay windows. While I lovethe open space, I am finding itdifficult to create a cosy atmos-phere. It has wooden floors andhigh ceilings. I love moderndécor but the room feels coldand disconnected from the restof the house. How can I turnthis space into an inviting livingroom?

A: Congratulations! Building yourfirst home is very exciting and Itotally understand your desire tocreate a cosy and inviting space.

A living room can set thetone for the entire house and it’sworth spending the extra timeto make it perfect.

Furthermore your frustrationis not uncommon. A large spa-cious room can be both a bless-ing and a curse. Making a largeroom appear smaller is often asmuch a concern as making asmall room appear larger.

A blank canvas is also a de-light to work with and with theright know-how your room willbe transformed into an inviting

living room space.First and foremost, your

Don’t be afraid to pull furni-ture away from the walls to re-duce the appearance of spacewhile arranging your sofa andarmchairs to face a focal pointsuch as a fireplace or television.IKEA have beautiful room di-viders which you could use tosegment the sections of yourroom, or even just as decorationto smooth the corners of yourroom. Colds and flu’s form a part of oureveryday life, either we have oneor we know someone who hasone. Often we are afraid ofcontacting one, and look for quickfixes to cure them. There isanother point of view andapproach. That is, to look at whywe get colds and flu’s and how toavoid them.Viruses capable of causing a coldare present in our everydayenvironments. Just like a seed, thevirus needs the right environmentto grow. This “right environment”can be put into three categories:-• The immature immune systemswhich need exposure to viruses togrow and mature.• Toxic systems where a cold canrepresent a cleansing of thesystem and lead to improvedhealth.• A disease process in anunhealthy body which needscareful treatment andmanagement.This article goes someway to dealwith the first category; we willdeal with the other two in furtherarticles. The cold that may resultfrom contact with a virus presentsan opportunity for the developingimmune system of an infant oryoung child to gain strength. Ear,nose and throat infections,bronchitis, asthma and pneumoniaare complications that can occurfrom a cold .Osteopathic treatmentcan be of enormous help inpreventing these complicationsfrom becoming a problem.Respiratory disorders tax thelymphatic system of the chest andneck. This causes enlargement ofthe glands and congestion in thelocal tissues, making drainage ofthe fluids difficult and thereforesusceptible to infection. This canfurther lead to muscle spasmwhich affects the spine, and anystrain on the spine causes nerveirritation which in turn causesmore congestion. Blood flow tothe affected area is lessened andtherefore healing is slowed orhalted.Allergic reactions to dust, pollenand other substances can causerunny nose and eyes, itchiness,sneezing, coughs and generalirritation through the respiratorytract. Asthma is a condition wherethe muscles of the bronchial tubesgo into spasm, the mucousmembranes become swollen andthere is increased mucoussecretions. Having a cold or sinusinfection along with theseconditions can lead to increasedsymptoms and even much worsedeeper respiratory disorders. TOWARDS EMOTIONAL HEALTH ANDCLEAR THINKING

A PANIC reaction consists of shallow, rapidbreathing (hyperventilating), increased heartrate (racing or pounding heart), and intenseanxiety.This happens when the sympathetic nervoussystem moves into overdrive, and the body isflooded with adrenaline. The activation of thenervous system prepares the individual for‘fight or flight’, and so the heart and lungs workharder to provide the system with what itneeds (more oxygen and glucose via the bloodstream).Also, blood is diverted to muscles used forescape or fight (in arms and legs) and awayfrom areas that are not of primary importancein self-defence, such as the brain and digestivesystem.During a panic reaction, hyperventilation maycause the person to feel light-headed or dizzyafter a while, and since the digestive systemshuts down during the episode, nausea can bea common symptom.As it’s not possible to predict the next ‘attack’,many develop intense anxiety betweenepisodes, worrying when and where the nextone will strike. In the meantime, there can bepersistent worry that another attack could comeany minute. A panic reaction, often referred to as a ‘panicattack’, is usually very unpleasant, but it is anadaptive response to a clear and immediatedanger to the individual.However, in Panic Disorder, this reactionhappens at inappropriate times. That is, it canbe triggered in the absence of an actual threatof harm, and therefore interfere with thefunctioning of that individual.Associations or connections between a feared

object or situation and the panic response areformed, or learned. Sometimes, people whosuffer from panic disorder do not identify aspecific object or situation that sets off thereaction; it may seem mysterious, general(occurring in reaction to various objects and/orsituations), or vague (as in reaction to certainthemes or ideas).Whatever the reason, the learning of a panicresponse to what is in reality a non-threateningobject, situation or theme is not intentional, butrather incidental.Nevertheless, the connection is made, and itcan increase or strengthen if avoidancebehaviour in reaction to the panic is practisedand reinforced. The immediate relief of avoidinga feared object or situation is rewarding, butcostly in the long run, as the habit grows and isreinforced.At an advanced stage, some people may avoidleaving home due to the fear of having a panicattack outside the safety of home, which isperceived as a more dangerous environment -often called ‘Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia’.Cognitive-behavioural therapy is a highlysuccessful form of treatment for Panic Disorder.In CBT the person is assisted to break theconnection between what is feared and thedevelopment of a panic reaction.Cognitive behavioural techniques are used tohelp combat the pattern and allow the personto resume his or her normal level offunctioning.
