Students Learn About Baptism Fourth grade students at SS. Peter & Paul School in Hamburg recently had the opportunity to learn about the Holy Sacrament of Baptism. Fr. John broke down parts of the sacrament and even had some volunteers fill in roles for parents and godparents. Pictured above is Rev. John Adams addressing the students.

Monarch Butterflies Could Get Endangered Species Status
Every year, millions of North American Monarch butter-flies head south for the winter - but their numbers have plummeted by up to 90 percent. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced a year-long review that could mean that the butterflies are placed on the Endangered Species List. Brilliant orange and black Manarchs are among the most easily recognizable of the butterfly Species which call the Americas home. Their migration takes them as far north as Canada and, during the winter months, as far south as Mexico City. A single Monarch can travel hundreds and thousands of miles. Monarchs are truly spectacular migrants, because the butterflies know the correct direction to migrate even though they have never made the journey before. They fol-low an internal “compass” that points them in the right direction each spring and fall. The Monarch migration is one of the greatest natural phenomena in the insect world. The federal government says the loss of milkweed - the Monarch caterpillar’s only food source - and pesticide ex-posure are among the top threats to the species. (Some es-timate that the number of milkweed plants has declined by as much as 80% with widespread spraying of weed killer.) The Evans Garden Club will be distributing Milkweed seeds at the Environmental Fair at the Evans Center Fire Hall on Saturday, March 28, and at other locations in weeks to come.

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta
Take Stock For SpringWith the long freeze and snowy conditions that the eastern part of the country has dealt with this winter, it may be hard to believe that spring is on its way. But in southerly parts, signs of spring are already appear-ing. Regardless of whether you’re still shoveling snow, or watching buds blossom, it’s time to start preparing for the busy spring season. Here are a few things to add to your to-do list over the next few weeks:• Take stock: Check your garage or storage shed to make sure you have all the tools and supplies needed to prep the lawn and garden. Things like grass seed for treating brown or thin spots, fertilizer, and lawn tools like thatchers and rakes.• Prepare your lawnmower and power tools: Make sure the mower is assembled, that blades are sharp and that you have fresh fuel on hand. Check that power tools like edgers, blowers, string trim-mers and hedge trimmers are in good shape.• Turn your compost pile: Or, if you don’t have one, start one. It won’t be ready for early spring but could be usable in the summer to help along your vegetable
garden.• Get outdoor furniture ready: Whether your patio furniture is stored or sturdy enough to sit outside all win-ter, check it for damage and clean off dirt, mineral scal-ing or other crud.• Check window and door screens: Replacing a torn or ratty screen is one of the easiest and most affordable DIY jobs.• Inspect your lawn for dam-age: Freezing weather, icy patches and salt-burnt edg-ing are among the problems homeowners often fi nd after the snow melts. You can be-gin patching up damaged ar-
eas even before the last hardfrost.• Make a budget: List thesupplies and tools you need, plus repairs. Also budgethow much time you candedicate to home and gardenwork this year.
TIP: Help salt-damagedgrass and plants recover bywatering them thoroughlyonce the weather is consis-tently above freezing, thenre-seeding and treating withappropriate fertilizer.
Send your home tips andquestions to [email protected].

Students in Mrs. Patricia Newton's Middle School Math class celebrated Pi day. The kids brought in pie's, round snacks and made t-shirts with the Pi theme. Pi Day is cel-ebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS
By Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Immigrant” (R) -- Ewa (Marion Coutillard) and her sister make the harrowing journey to Ellis Island from their home in Poland, only to be told that their immigration would end there. A smooth-talking and enigmatic busi-nessman (Joaquin Phoenix) happens to be at the immi-gration offi ce, and he says he can get them onto Manhattan. The catch is that the innocent and demure Ewa must work for him as a dancer and pros-titute. In the darkness of her situation, Ewa catches a fl ash of hope coming from a dap-per stage magician (Jeremy Renner). The story is engaging and heartrending, staying visually stylistic without ever melting into melodramatic bluster. The light and mood coming from the picture captures an-other world, and it might as well be a 1921 New York. It’s a slow, serious drama with an emotional pay off.
“Pelican Dreams” (G) -- Just a few years back, a pelican caused a commotion on San Francisco’s storied Golden Gate Bridge. She was wan-dering the bridge, injured, lost, confused and in need of help. She was swooped up, taken to a shelter and named “Gigi.” Gigi’s story of rescue and the humans helping her rehabilitate is the main draw for this curious and thought-ful documentary about the big birds. It turns out that pelicans have a lot going on, more than enough to keep kids and adults paying attention and caring for an 80-minute run time. They’re meant to be out in the wild, but they can become peculiarly dog-like when they spend too much
time with people. Still, pel-icans are not pets, and those who can’t rejoin the wild world often meet with eu-thanasia -- raising the stakes for those of us who develop a soft spot for the awkward little guys on-screen.
“The Invisible Front” (Not Rated) -- As German power faded in eastern Europe to-ward the end of World War II, Soviet occupation became the new threat to the many people who favored demo-cratic government, or who had suffered during com-munist occupation earlier in the war. This documentary takes a very personal look at a Lithuanian resistance group that would come to be known as “The Forest Broth-ers.” The fi lmmakers craft a riveting story with the letters,
photographs and living testi-monials from those who werethere.
“Happy Valley” (Not Rated) -- Penn State football andJoe Paterno enjoyed yearsof praise and success, untilthe child abuse scandal thatcame to light in 2011 turned a college football program intoa fi restorm. This documenta-ry takes a keen focus on the reaction and impact in thecommunity that idolized Pa-terno and Penn State football. Some people just denied, oth-er raged or pointed fi ngers. There were plenty of pub-lic meltdowns, even a full-blown riot. It’s an uncom-fortable line of thinking, butone worth following -- how should a community respond when there’s something trulyugly to confront?
Marion Coutillard stars in “The Immigrant”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
No Quick Fix For Belly FatDEAR DR. ROACH: I am an old man (84) with a mid-dle-age paunch (5 feet, 7 inches tall and weigh 200 pounds) who needs to fi t into a suit with pants an inch too tight in time for a wedding in a few weeks. About how many pounds do I need to lose to fi t into them? Is there any formula for converting waist inches to pounds? And are there exercises or other means to focus the weight loss on belly fat? -- Anon.ANSWER: I am afraid there’s no formula. Fur-ther, I have to tell you that weight doesn’t always come off where we want it to, and specifi c exercises aren’t go-ing to make the fat come off in those locations. The good news is that for most people, especially men, the fi rst 10 pounds or so to come off usually comes from the middle. The fat in the omentum (an apron-shaped structure inside the abdomen) is metabolically active and often is the fi rst place where fat is gained or lost. Moreover, that fat is the most likely to increase risk of heart disease. So losing weight around your middle is a good way of improving overall health, especially if you have more inches there than you’d like.Often people start a healthy diet and exercise program and fi nd that the waist size decreases but their weight stays the same. That may be because muscle is much heavier than fat, and the increase in muscle mass makes up for the loss of fat. More muscle is good for you; less body fat is good for you. Weight is an imperfect measure.
Liposuction can remove fat from around your waist, but a healthy diet and regular exercise will make you feel better and quite possibly live longer.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I in-jured my little fi nger in an athletic event. The end of my pinky pointed in toward the ring fi nger. It is black and blue, and swollen. Do you think I fractured it? Should I get an X-ray? I am still able to curl my fi nger. -- A.J.ANSWER: It’s most likely that you damaged one of the tendons in the fi nger. Some-times a fracture can happen at the same time. Most often, these are treated conserva-tively, with ice right after the injury and the fi nger splinted in a straight position for up to six weeks. Only an expe-rienced physician, such as a hand surgeon, can provide
exact recommendations.***DEAR DR. ROACH: Whenyou are instructed to takemedicine, vitamin, etc., onan empty stomach, how longafter eating should you wait? Also, if taken before eating, how long after you take themedication until you caneat? -- B.H.ANSWER: It depends onthe particular medication. For example, the osteopo-rosis drug alendronate (Fos-amax) should be taken afteran overnight fast, with plainwater (even mineral watercan affect its absorption)and then no food for a half hour. Different medications have different requirements.Your pharmacist remainsyour best resource, and of-ten has both more trainingand experience than doctors. In general, most vitaminsshould be taken with food.
