Alfred State welcomed a new class of freshmen this fall. Megan Dillon, a resident of Angola, NY, has been ad-mitted to Alfred State for the fall 2012 semester in the Forensic Science Technology program. Ronald Thompson, a resident of Angola, NY, has been admitted to Alfred State for the fall 2012 semester in the Educational Opportunity Prog program. Alfred State is one of eight University Colleges of Technology within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The college offers educational opportu-nities in 52 associate degree programs, 20 baccalaureate degree programs, and three certificate programs in the schools of Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Management and Engineering Technology, and Applied Technology. The College is accredited by the Middle States Associa-tion of Colleges and Schools.

RONALD R. STROH Ronald R. Stroh, 71, of Naples, FL passed away at home on September 11, 2012 surrounded by his family and loved ones. Ron was born in Buffalo, NY He received his doctorate of Education in Physics at the University of Buf-falo and was a Professor and Department Head at Erie Community College, in Buffalo. After retiring at the young age of 55, he moved to Naples, FL. Ron is survived by his wife, Vir-ginia. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniver-sary on August 25, 2012. He is the loving father of Craig Stroh and Kristin Stroh; beloved brother of Marlene Walker, James Stroh, Linda Boyer and Deborah Slawinski. Ron enjoyed life and spending time with his friends and family. He loved travel, golf, boating, fishing and Happy Hours with many friends. Stacy; lov-ing mother of Pamela (Ron Bergum) Sciarrino, Robin (Owen) Timm, Diana (Kev-in) Johnson, Cindy (Brian) Ulrich and the late Shirley (Ron) Heimback; sister of William and Robert Montgomery; sister-in-law of Ronald Stacy, Sharon Putnam and Linda Clark; grandmother of Christo-pher (Lindsay), Jonathan, Abigale, Sara, Matthew, Samantha, Travis, Page, Katie and Zachary. Friends may call Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Addison Funeral Home, Inc. 262 N. SEPTEMBER IS ASSISTED LIVING MONTH Governor Andrew Cuomo has proclaimed September Assisted Living Month in recognition of the more than two million New Yorkers who will need some form of long-term care by 2015. In observance of Assisted Living Month, ESAAL member residences will host a number of events, bring-ing together residents, families, employees, volunteers and the surrounding community. The National Census Bureau estimates by 2050 the number of Americans aged 65 and older will be 88.5 mil-lion – more than double the current population. In New York, the most rapid population growth in the last decade has occurred among the oldest and frailest population groups. "Assisted Living Month presents a unique opportunity for all aging New Yorkers and their families to discuss their future long-term care needs and consider assisted living as a desirable option," said Lisa Newcomb, ESAAL executive director. "For those no longer able to live alone, licensed assisted living is a viable alternative, offering them not only assistance with daily living, but many oc-casions for socialization and activity. Furthermore, at less than one-half of the cost of a nursing home, assisted living is a safe, cost-effective community-based option." New York has three types of licensed residences: adult homes, enriched housing programs and assisted living residences. While accommodations vary among residenc-es, each offers a home-like atmosphere and is dedicated to preserving the dignity and independence of residents. Some residences are licensed to provide "age in place" programs, allowing seniors to remain in their current as-sisted living setting even as they begin to require more specialized care. One of these programs, the Assisted Liv-ing Program, enables seniors to utilize Medicaid for as-sisted living expenses. "Today, access to quality, affordable long-term care is a necessity," said Newcomb. "I urge seniors and their families who are unfamiliar with assisted living to contact and visit a local licensed residence during Assisted Living Month."

On Monday evening, September 24, a program of Civil War music will be presented at the Evans Historical Soci-ety Museum. Father John Kwiecien, pastor of Most Pre-cious Blood Church in Angola, will provide an exciting history of music during the Civil War era. Using a guitar and a banjo, Father John will sing many songs sung during the war, as well as music that evolved from the conflict. Included in the presentation will be the familiar song, “Battle Cry of Freedom,” which was used to rally the troops. Joseph Pisarski, president of the Historical Society, mentioned that the program is designed for music lovers, as well as history buffs. The public is invited to the pro-gram that will begin at 7:00 p.m. The Historical Society is located in the 1857 brick school house on Route 5 in Evans Center.

CIVIL WAR MUSIC AT MUSEUM

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team won at Maryvale on Friday, September 14th by a score of 4-1. On this rainy and cold afternoon, AJ Bergum scored twice and assisted on another for the Eagles. Codie Taylor opened the scoring with a nice left foot finish, and cap-tain Wade Bergum scored as well. Defensively, captain Jon Weber, Kenny Pierce, Jerry Yeates, and Kyle Tezanos turned in strong performances, as did goal keeper Bryce Parker-Norton in tough conditions. The Eagles record now stands at 6-1 overall.

LS BOYS VARSITY SOCCER BEATS MARYVALE

The Evans Eagles Girls 12U Travel Softball Team fin-ished the season in excellent fashion, taking 3rd place in the State Qualifier, and 3rd in Metro Play. Head coach, Tim Wright, and assistant coaches, Dave Holscher, Tim Diamond, Ron Haberer, and Rich DeAngelis appreciate everyone’s help in making the first season a huge success.

EVANS EAGLES GIRLS SOFTBALL ENDS SEASON IN 3rd PLACE

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team defeated Pioneer on Monday, September 17th, by a score of 3-1. Captain Wade Bergum scored his 19th goal of the season as the Eagles improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play. AJ Bergum added a goal and an assist and Codie Taylor scored the other Lake Shore goal.

Erie Country has a great library system as we know from our wonderful Angola Public Library. The library is cur-rently building an addition which will help it to be of even greater service to our community. Tropical rain forests are being destroyed at the rate of more than 50 million acres a year. Every second a tract of rain forest the size of a football field disappears from the planet in order to provide space for cattle or crops or to produce paper products and furniture. Not only that, wood consumption is expected to rise by nearly 60% over the next 20 years. *These are pretty scary numbers. In some tropical rain forests, a single tree can be home to up to 100 species. Services were held for Raymond E. Nordine, of Angola, entered into rest Wed., Sept. 19, 2012 at the age of 82. He was the dear husband of Beverly (Parsell) Nordine; loving father of Scott E. (Karen) Nordine and Stacy R. LaBruno; grandfather of Kortnee, Kapree, Adam, Jillian, Abby and Arielle; also survived by 5 great grandchildren. Mr. Nor-dine was a 1948 graduate Cassadaga High School. He joined the US Navy, where he served overseas from 1948-1952. Upon returning home, he found employment with Niagara Mohawk. He was an avid outdoorsman.
