EVANS YOUTH BASEBALL 2013Evans Youth Baseball is a local affiliate of Babe Ruth Baseball, Babe Ruth Softball, and Cal Ripken Leagues. Each year, it provides organized house and tournament baseball opportunities for approximately 500 children. Practices begin around April 1st. The house league season will begin on May 5th and end around July 1st for age 12 and younger.

SHARED ASSESSMENT SERVICES CONTRACT OFFERED BY CHEEKTOWAGA SUPERVISOR In a letter dated 1-7-2013 to Evans Supervisor Keith Dash, Cheektowaga Supervisor Mary F. Holtz offers to sign a contract for shared assessment services. Read the letter at http://tinyurl.com/awylyb7. Cheektowaga saved $60,000! Why not Evans? Beginning 1-1-2007, Evans signed an assessment services contract with North Collins which required the assessor to be in North Collins 1½ days a week or 30% of her time. Evans was paid $10,000 a year plus a 5% yearly increase. Evans taxpayers paid for 100% of the assessor’s salary, benefits, office expenses and support staff. The costs to provide these services were significantly more than the payments received from North Collins. The contract included a $6,000 direct payment to the assessor. The town attorney refuses to answer the question if these payments totaling $36,000 should have been turned over to the supervisor (taxpayers) as required under NYS Law / Town Law / Article 3 / Section 27. A Freedom of Information request to the NYS Office of Real Property Services (ORPS) showed that North Collins received more in assessment related state aid than was paid to the Town of Evans for assessment services! North Collins made a nice profit at Evans Taxpayers expense! In 2008, the town wide reassessment sparked significant controversy. Ignoring NYS Real Property Law that requires “uniform” assessments, Assessor Ebersole used the town wide reassessment to take care of her “friends, family & political benefactors.” (http://tinyurl.com/bc9e3x2). Current Board of Assessment Review members received assessments that lowered their taxes between $358 and $1,519 a year! (http://tinyurl.com/bhg4dpt) An official at a higher level of government described these reductions as “disturbing”! (http://tinyurl.com/a6bfbs2) At the 1-9-2013 worksession, the President of the Buffalo Niagara Builders Association drove to Evans Town Hall from North Tonawanda to recommend that Evans appoint a qualified assessor! (http://tinyurl.com/bejaezt) Councilman Paul Cooper (pcooper@townofevans.org) , who saved $571.65 in taxes after reassessment, (http://tinyurl.com/agm5u7p) offered a resolution to reappoint Jeanne Ebersole. Councilman Dennis Feldmann will be the deciding vote on a shared assessments services contract or who will serve as the next assessor. Call (549-0972 X315) or email (dfeldmann@townofevans.org) Councilman Feldmann and tell him big changes are needed. Town board members resisting change should be reminded of the downsizing vote. Hopefully, Councilman Feldmann will be running for re-election this year with the ability to tell residents he voted for them and not the party bosses. Another town wide reassessment will occur during this six year term. If you don’t want another six years like the previous eight with Jeanne Chase Ebersole as assessor, contact town board members and let them know!
