ANGOLA VFW POST 5798 DONATES TO ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION

September was National Alzheimer's Awareness Month. The Western New York Alzheimer's Association Chapter had a fundraising walk to raise awareness and provide money for caregiving, education, and research. The Reitz family of Angola joined thousands in Delaware Park to walk for "Team Terry'' in memory of their cousin Terry who lost her battle recently at age 60 with early onset Al-zheimer's Disease and to support their mom, Mary Inglut who also suffers with the disease .. Team Terry raised over $1500.00 with $100.00 of the monies being donated from the Angola VFW. Did you know that 5 million people in the U. S.A. suffer from Alzheimer's Disease and by 2050 that number will triple? Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death and it is not curable, treatable, nor can the disease be slowed. Alzheimer's Care will cost the United States 203 billion dollars this year. There are 15 million people who are caregivers for this disease. Since 2000 the number of cases of Alzheimer’s has risen by 68%. Pictured is Laurie Reitz with her mom Mary, who lives with Alzheimer's Disease and both hope to see a cure for this disease in the near future. With Funding and Dona-tions (like the one from the VFW Post 5798) for Alzheim-er's Research- it may become reality.

ANGOLA FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE

The Angola Fire Department held its annual open house on Saturday October 19th, 2013. All the Angola Fire De-partment equipment was on display along with the Erie County Ivolunteerfire.org recruitment trailer. This year the public was able to view a special demonstration show-ing the difference between a room without a sprinkler system and one that had a sprinkler system. During this demonstration live fire was used to show the public what an actual room fire looks like and how area volunteer fire-fighters go about putting out a fire. Also during the open house the public was able to view the annual Fire Preven-tion poster winners from the JT Waugh elementary school classes. The UNYTS mobile blood donation bus was also pres-ent at this event along with Boy Scout Troop 713 bake sale. Once again this year ice cream sundaes were pro-vided free to all people in attendance.

BEACH ROAD PAVING COMPLETED A break in the weather gave Evans Highway crews an opportunity to complete their last paving project of the season. A half mile of Beach Road from Route #5 to Bren-nen Road was paved. Due to limited funding for paving materials the highway department's policy has been to repave the worse sections of town highways. Earlier in the year sections of Madison Road, Herr Road and Derby Road were paved. Plans for next year include paving addi-tional sections of these roads and the long overdue major reconstruction project on Newcomb Road off of Gowans Road delayed by the installation of 1500 feet of new wa-terline which was completed late this summer.

It's October and Southtowns Catholic is getting into the Halloween Spirit! Every family was invited to be part of our Storybook Pumpkin Patch. GUBALA AWARDED DEGREE FROM BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Caitlin Marie Gubala from Angola, NY, was recently awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Bacca-laureate from the Decker School of Nursing at Bingham-ton University. Binghamton University is one of the four university centers of the State University of New York. Known for the excellence of its students, faculty, staff and programs, Binghamton enrolls close to 15,000 students in programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Its curriculum, founded in the liberal arts, has expanded to include selected professional and graduate programs.

LS BOYS VARSITY SOCCER ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team advanced to the semifinals in sectional play by defeating visiting Lew-Port 3-0 on Wednesday, October 23rd. Wade Bergum opened the scoring in the sixteenth minute off a nice pass from Max Eastman; then Wade Bergum doubled the Lake Shore lead with another strong shot in the sixtieth minute off an assist from Kenny Pierce. AJ Bergum closed the scoring minutes later off a great run and cross from Chris Beckley. Bryce Parker-Norton preserved the clean sheet with many nice saves on the sloppy night. The Eagles will next face Riverside on Saturday, October 26th with a trip the sectional finals on the line.

VILLAGE COURT CLERK AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP

Amanda L. Ciccarella, the Village of Angola Court Clerk, was awarded a scholarship by the NYS Association of Magistrate Court Clerks. The NYSAMCC granted only 3 scholarships this year to town and village court clerks from across New York State. The scholarship enabled Amanda to attend the Asso-ciation's annual conference in Albany from October 6th through 9th. (The scholarship funded the entire cost of the trip, including hotel, mileage, and meals.) The winners were able to attend classes offered on vari-ous subjects such as DMV information, Criminal Justice reporting, financial responsibility, probation cases, among many others. Most classes were taught by staff from the Office of Court Administration. Amanda is a resident of the Village of Angola and works part time for the Angola Village Court. She has a masters degree in Psychology from UB and is a NYS Cer-tified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor. She cur-rently works as a career advisor in Adult and Continuing Education for the Buffalo Public Schools.
