NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY AT THE LEGION

On Saturday, December 7, 2013 the Newcomb-Long American Legion Post 928 observed Pearl Harbor Day. About 15 people showed up for a short ceremony that in-cluded a 21 gun salute, playing of Taps, and a prayer. Na-tional Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is observed annually on December 7, is to remember and honor all those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After the ceremony a luncheon was held for any and all Veterans. The luncheon was attended by about 30 veterans and their families.

STUDENTS ON TEAM PRIDE RESEARCH NATIONALITIES

In Social Studies class, the students on Team Pride have been studying Immigration and the impacts of Immigra-tion on Cities in America in the late 1800’s. Part of their studies included a project “Coming to America.” For this project, students visited the Ellis Island web-site to give them some background information on the process that immigrants faced in “Coming to America.” They completed activities in the classroom and at home that helped prepare them for their assignment. Students, in an oral presentation, were required to ex-plain why they left their country of origin to come to the United States. They had to research a country, preferably one of their nationalities, and walk through the process from leaving home to settling in the United States. Stu-dents had to fulfill a number of requirements such as: packing luggage (what would they bring if they were nev-er returning home), demonstrate custom/tradition, learn words from their heritage, provide a recipe and discuss the journey to America. AMERICAN LEGION DISTRIBUTED THANKSGIVING DINNERS

On Tuesday, November 26, the Newcomb-Long Ameri-can Legion Post 928 distributed 23 Thanksgiving dinners. The recipients were local families from the Town of Ev-ans and the Department of Disabled American Veterans. The Post donated 1 turkey and 1 ham for each family. All of the remaining sides were donated by Wegmans, New Era employees, Braymillers, Chiavettas, Legion members, and Legion Patrons. All of the families were extremely thankful for the help this year. The American Legion hopes to make this an annual tradition and expects to increase the number of families they help next year.
