EVANS YOUTH BASEBALL 2014Evans Youth Baseball is a local affiliate of Babe Ruth Baseball, Babe Ruth Softball, and Cal Ripken Leagues. Each year, it provides organized house and tournament baseball opportunities for approximately 500 children. Practices begin around April 1st. The house league season will begin on May 5th and end around July 1st for age 12 and younger.

Jeanette M. Gresko (nee Meidel) passed away peace-fully in her Angola home, Friday January 24, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cervical cancer. She was 69. Beloved wife of the late Patrick Gresko; loving mother of John and Steven Gresko; sister of Marylyn (Robert) Weyand; Aunt of Jeanie, Julie, Jef-fery, Joe, Henry and Larry. Also survived by good friends, she thought of as family, Bernadette (Gary) Huff and Kathy Smith. Services were held Friday January 31, 2014. Jeanette was a legal secretary for the Buffalo Sheriff’s Office for years, before leaving to start a family. She then re-turned to the workforce as a Home Health Care Aide for Mercy Home Care. She re-tired after 20 years, to focus on caring for her husband Patrick, who suffered from Advanced Parkinson’s Dis-ease, until his death only 3 months ago. Laura J. Mazzetti (nee Alimonti), age 88, of Derby, New York, died Sunday, January 26, 2014. She was the daughter of Vincent and Rose (Drag-onette) Alimonti. She was born May 10, 1925 in Buffalo, New York. Laura was an avid gardener who loved growing and canning vegetables. She was proud of her flower gardens es-pecially the roses. Laura loved cooking and baking, but her family was what she loved the most. Laura married her loving husband of 68 years, Aldo A. Maz-zetti, in Buffalo, New York on January 5, 1946.To-gether they had four chil-dren; Judy (Gary) Almond, Jerry (Beverly), Laurie (Kyle) Roche’, and the late James (Sharon). She was the sister of Andrew (Rose), and Katherine (late Branko) Schiffer, Late Eu-gene (Rose), Mary (Ches-ter) Beres, Teresa (Gino) Mazzetti, Junelle (Gerry) and Joe (Matilda). Son of Doris and the late Charles Vine; brother of Marilyn Vine, Sue Alspaugh-Denman, Karlyn Hilts and Jane Rig-gie. Cherished grandfather of Hannah, Ronnie Thomp-son and Hailey Hood. Ser-vices will be held at the conveinence of the family. Mr. Vine was a Special Ed-ucation Teacher with BO-CES, in the Olean School District, where he taught life skills to his students. He enjoyed being a DJ for Karaoke parties, shopping at yard sales and most of all loved spending time with his grandchildren Mr. Vine was also a Veteran of The United States Airforce from 1975 - 1979. LOCAL RESIDENT FEATURED ON VELOCITY’S ‘GRAVEYARD CARZ’

It was one year ago when Evans resident Tom Partridge appeared on the TV Show, Graveyard Carz. At that time the episode told his story of wanting a 1969 Dodge Day-tona since he was a child and how it came about to be on the TV Show. Season III of the show started January 7th and over the course of the 13 episodes it will show the completion of his car. He said, “It’s been a great ride (no pun intended). I’ve gotten to know the guys very well and hope to con-tinue being involved with them”. Tom said, “Even though Mark comes across as a jerk to his guys, he’s actually a really decent guy who sticks to his word. Don’t get me wrong, he is a ball buster, but it’s all in fun. In fact you should see me giving some of it right back to him in a couple future episodes”. He was there for 5 weeks this summer working not only on his car but others. The car turned out great. Even the underside of the car is done just like the factory would have done it. There are several little “details” that Tom said he will finish, but these are something he and Mark talked about and Tom said he would enjoy do them. There were several sponsors that Tom contacted about his car, which helped out in vari-ous ways. Locally, NAPA gave Tom the corporate num-ber and they helped out with most of his front suspension parts. One of the many interesting things about this whole process is that you will see Former Professional Wrestler and Football Player Bill Goldberg make an appearance on the show. Tom sent some materials to him about the show and Bill Goldberg contacted him. “It was last January and 13 degrees outside, I was loosening up the tires for a car I had picked up for Mark and my phone rang and it was Bill Goldberg”. He said they talked a few times, Bill watched the show and Tom put him in touch with Mark. “Ultimately, Mark made an agreement to do some work on his car, and Bill will be on one of the later episodes I believe”. Tom says it may be the last episode of the season where you will see a bit of the cars performance! He said he has to thank his longtime friend John for building the motor. “It’s been a lot of fun and quite an education and as I said before I hope to continue helping in some way”. He plans on flying back there to help work on some more cars and organize, as he says, “the multitude of parts that are inside the spare cars he has”. The show is called Graveyard Carz and airs on Tuesday nights at 9pm on the Velocity channel. (Ch. 403)

EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUB JANUARY MEETING

Robert "Bob-cat" Catalino led the Evans Democratic Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the January meeting of the Evans Democratic Club held at the VFW Post 5798. It was announced that Bob-cat will be honored as the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce's 2013 Lifetime Achieve-ment Award, and the Club honored him with a standing ovation. Town Clerk Lynn Krajacic is working on the town and county tax bills. Last weekend she presided over the in-stallation of officers for Lake Erie Beach Fire Hall. Bob-cat had referred a County Board of Elections issue to Kra-jacic; she reported that she's working with the Board to see about a grant for ensuring handicapped-accessibility for Evans election districts. Angola mayor Howard M. "Hub" Frawley addressed the recent efforts to maintain the Lake Shore Hospital. FEMA money has been obtained that will help keep the doors open. Mayor Frawley will attend a meeting of the NY Conference of Mayors in Albany next month and report back about those proceedings. Frawley currently serves on the Executive Board of NYCOM. He is also currently looking into what it would take to add another water line that would service the Village. Bob-cat reminded the Club that this election year will include local Town of Evans committee member races. Other races include: NYS Governor; NYS Senate and Assembly; U.S. House of Representatives; and five NYS state court races. The Town of Evans is located in the 27th Congressional district, the 60th state Senate district, and the 147th Assembly district. Candidates for state supreme court will be running in an eight-county district.The Club elected officers for 2014. Kindergarten Registration2014-2015Kindergarten Registration InformationChildren expected to enter Kindergarten in the Lake Shore Central School District as of September 2014 should register between February 24 – 28, 2014. The school district will conduct Kindergarten Registration as outlined below.

• To be enrolled in the September 2014 Kindergarten class, a child living in the Lake Shore Central School District must be five years of age on or before December 1, 2014 pursuant to §7120 of the Lake Shore CSD Policy Manual.• Proof of age is required at the time of registration. A birth certificate, a baptismal record, or a passport will serve as adequate proof of age. Also, an official record of immunizations and proof of district residency is required for registration.• All immunizations must be acquired by the start of school in September. Students without required immunizations will not be permitted to start school.• Kindergarten Visitation - Parents and entering students will be invited to visit classrooms, take a short bus ride, and meet teachers before the start of school.

Jennifer Philarom comes from a long line of educators. Her aunt, grandfather and both parents are all teachers and even her husband is a certified teacher. So it is no surprise that she inherited their love of children and it was only natural that she, too, would want to work with children. A graduate of West Seneca East with two young children of her own, Mrs. Philarom has been teaching for over 14 years, the last 13½ years in the Lake Shore Central School District. She has taught in several schools teaching grades 4 through 6 but has spent the past 5½ years as a 4th grade teacher at Highland Elementary School. Mrs. Philarom has worn many hats while at Lake Shore including her first assignment as a Math and Reading Specialist. In addition to teaching, she has also served as the varsity coach for six years for both outdoor and indoor track and field and has been for the past six years the Math Curriculum Specialist. While at Highland, Mrs. Philarom has risen to be a leader among the staff, leading workshops and offering professional development classes for the benefit of her colleagues. Loved by her students, she runs an intramural program for them and you will frequently find her in her classroom before and after school helping students that need that little extra to succeed. The Highland community is very fortunate and proud that Mrs. Philarom has chosen Highland Elementary as her “home”.
