TARA A. EVERT Funeral Services were held at the Riles & Wooley Funeral Home for Tara A. Evert, of Forestville, NY, who died on Sunday, Au-gust 4, 2013. She was born in Buffalo, on December 11, 1975, the daughter of Kenneth Evert, of Forest-ville and Audrey (Melson) Ciepiela, of Lackawanna. She was a graduate of Lake Shore Central School and received her LPN last year from the BOCES pro-gram in Angola. Ms. Evert was currently working as a LPN at Autumn View Health Care Facility, Ham-burg. She was involved with Canine Rescue and was a former CPR Instruc-tor with the American Red Cross. Surviving besides her parents are her step-mother Cindee Evert of Forestville, a stepbrother, Paul Ciepiela, of Lackawa-nna and a stepsister, Sharon Ciepiela, of Buffalo. Also surviving are her fiance Mi-chael Allen of Forestville and several aunts, uncles & cousins. She was pre-deceased by her paternal grandparents Clarence and Gertrude Evert and by her maternal grandparents Ray-mond and Dorothy Melson. LOCAL STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM BUFFALO STATE

The following students graduated from SUNY Buffalo State in May 2013: Jessica Bress of Angola, NY graduated with a B.S. in early childhood and childhood education. Travis Denisco of Angola, NY graduated with a B.A. in humanities. Shannon Sedor of Angola, NY graduated with a B.A. in anthropology. SUNY Buffalo State, a State University of New York campus located in Buffalo's Elmwood Village, offers de-grees in the arts, education, the sciences, and professional studies. BICYCLE RAFFLE WINNER The summer has been filled with activity at the Angola Public Library. The most recent occasion was the 2nd annual Hot Dog Sale sponsored by Legislator John Mills. The weather was perfect and the prices were right for this fun filled family event. Legislator Mills, with the help of the Village of Angola staff and the Angola Library Board of Trustees set up the tent and manned the grill to cook and serve hot dogs and sausages. The climax of the event was the drawing of the win-ning ticket for a SR SunTour M3000 24 speed bicycle. The bicycle was on display at the library and tickets were sold in advance and on the day of the Hot Dog Sale. This bright blue beauty was donated by an anonymous library supporter. The lucky winner of the raffle was Village of Angola Mayor, Howard (Hub) Frawley. We look forward to see-ing him riding through the village soon. EVANS FORCE WINS METRO DIVISION TITLE

Despite being a first year 12U team, the Evans Force won the Red Division in the Metro Girls Softball League. It was a remarkable season with the amazing effort of the Evans girls in which many of them were entering their first year of travel. The team was led by their fireball pitcher Ruby Thomas who was also their leading hitter. Ruby final stats were amazing as she posted a 3.03 ERA and got 160 strikeouts in 97 innings. She also led the team in batting avg (.529), on base pct (.600), RBI (23) and ex-tra base hits (10). Remarkable numbers while playing in only two thirds of the games. Leadoff hitter, Evie Butlak led the team in hits (29) and was second in runs scored (28) while Tabitha Allen led the way with 29 runs scored and walks (28). Evie also posted a 4-3 pitching record as the no.2 pitcher on the staff. Emma Kist was one of the hottest hitter in the second half of the season as she was 2nd in extra base hits (8) and was 4th in runs (23), 3rd in hits (26) and 4th in RBI (17). Caitlin Burbige was 3rd in batting average (.373), 2nd in On base pct (.584), 2nd in walks (26) and RBI (20). Maddy Tempski was the anchor behind the plate and offensive spark plug. Despite missing a quarter of the games she still managed to be 4th in runs (24), 4th in hits (22) and 4th in RBI (19). Camryn Adimey played stellar third base and outfield and offered some strong pitch-ing outings. She also was top 5 in most offensive catago-ries and gave the team speed on the bases. Elle Hale was heading for an outstanding season before she suffered a wrist injury causing her to miss the last half of the season. The team captain’s power was missed as she led the team in HRs (3) and was 4th in RBI (17) and second in batting average (.389). Like Elle, Brooke Browning missed half the season due to injury. She played well at second base and had many timely hits and managed to score whenever she reached base. Grace Barker had many run producing hits that included 2 game winning RBIs. Errika Gonzalez got most of her hits later in the season including some late inning clutch hits. She also was 2nd in walks. Brie Costello joined the team late and played in nearly half the games. She improved every game playing a solid left field. The team went into the playoffs as the number 6th seed of 28 teams. The traveled to Niagara Wheatfield to play the Nitros. The Force could not hang on to a 3-0 lead and lost 5-3. Evie Butlak, Caitlin Burbige and Emma Kist got the only hits for the Force. Ruby Thomas was great on the mound as she only allowed 5 hits and 3 walks while strik-ing out 8. The Evans Force will try to repeat as division champs. The team is in need of players as some of the girls need to move up a division. Tryouts are 8/15 6pm, 8/17 4 pm and 8/20 pm at EYB fields. The Force will be trying to field teams in 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U divisions.

SAM MOGAVERO GOLF TOURNAMENT HELD

On Wednesday, August 7th, CSEA Retirees Local 903 presented a check to the Angola Fire Department for $300.00 and Mercy Flight for $700.00 in memory of Sam Mogavero. The proceeds were from the 3rd Annual Sam Mogavero Golf Tournament that was held on June 7th at the Batavia Country Club. The golf outing will be an an-nual event. Next year's Tournament will be June 2, 2014 at Chestnut Hill Country Club in Darien, New York. Sam was very active in both the Angola Fire Department and CSEA.

“STAND DOWN” EVENT FOR HOMELESS AND AT RISK VETERANS

Reminiscent of safe-havens for soldiers in the Vietnam War, a “Stand Down” will be held on Wednesday, August 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Connecticut Street Armory, 184 Connecticut Street in Buffalo. This event will provide homeless and Veterans at risk of being homeless with information regarding: VA health care and other Veterans benefits information, education and employment opportunities, housing, health screening, social and family services, women Veterans information and more. Transportation is available and lunch will be provid-ed. This event is sponsored by: VA Western New York Healthcare System, Goodwill of WNY, WNY Veterans Housing Coalition, Veterans One-Stop Center of of West-ern New York and VA Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program. CREEK BEND BLUE GRASS AT ANGOLA GAZEBO

At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14th, the locally based Creek Bend Blue Grass Band will appear for the first time in several years. The group features the Panfil Brothers, local musicians and teachers at Frontier and Lake Shore Central Schools. The group is under longtime leader ship of Richard Schaefer of Eden who, at one time, was an as-sistant principal at the Lake Shore Middle School. The evening is sponsored by the Lake Shore Central Teacher’s Association. Over the years, they have spon-sored various concerts that have featured teachers from the local and area schools. Michael Frew is President of the Teacher’s Association and will be at the park to wel-come the group. Refreshments are sold at the park by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts. The ice cream man continues to make a stop at the park each week. Handicapped parking is available off Center and High Streets for early arrivals. Next week, on Wednesday, August 21st, the ever popu-lar Frankfurter German Show Band will be at the park. They will not be “closing the season” this year as they have in the past as there was a conflict with availability for the last week’s concert on August 28th that will feature Judd Sunshine of Sunshine Productions of Buffalo. The rain location for all of the concerts will come to the nearby New Angola Theater on North Main Street. Bring a folding chair or a blanket and enjoy the evening.

INFORMATION SESSIONS ANNOUNCED FOR EAT WELL LIVE WELL CHALLENGE The Fall edition of the award-winning “Eat Well Live Well Challenge,” an employee wellness program promot-ed by the nonprofit Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo, is right around the corner, and the Institute is inviting all Western New York employers and organizations to help promote healthier lifestyles. This results-focused wellness program, provided by Wegmans Markets, challenges participants to increase their physical activity and make good nutrition choices. Together, these actions enable individuals to improve their health and lower their risk for unnecessary medical costs from chronic illnesses. “Participants are asked to do three simple things for eight weeks,” said Wellness Institute Executive Director Philip Haberstro (www.CreatingHealthyCommunities.org). “All employees have to do is use a pedometer to record their steps each day, record the number of cups of fruit and vegetables eaten each day, and aim to make at least one meal a day follow the health-promoting ‘half-plate guide.’ Participants may also track their blood pres-sure and weight if they so choose.” Mr. Haberstro noted that The Eat Well Live Challenge is a proven health promotion program that requires a min-imal amount of time and investment for a powerful return. “Participants need only walking shoes, pedometers, and the desire to be healthy! It’s a very simple, confidential, and productive way to engage employees and family members to lead healthier lifestyles. Employers from all sectors will discover that the program results in greater teamwork, builds camaraderie and complements existing efforts to manage healthy costs.” The Challenge website www.eatwelllivewell.org, is free for employers, employ-ees and community organizations, offering user-friendly support and resources to help participants achieve their wellness goals. Citizen Police Academy Thursday, September 12, 2013 through

Thursday, November 14, 2013

The Citizen Police Academy has been designed as a way for the public to learn about police department operations and the duties of Evans Police Department personnel. The academy will meet each week at 6:30 p.m., and classes will be approximately three hours. Some of the topics covered will include patrol functions, detective bureau operations, crime scene investigation, accident investigation, domestic violence, court procedures, police and fire dispatch operations, sex offenders, and marine unit operations. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have never been arrested, be of good moral character, and pass a background investigation.

Anyone interested in attending may pick up an application in person at the
