POST 928 MAKES DONATION TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF LAKESHORE On Wednesday, November 6, the American Legion Post 928, the Sons of the Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary pre-sented a donation check in the amount of $1500 to the Boys and Girls Club of Lakeshore. The Boys and Girls Club was established in 2011 and serves over 100 fami-lies a year. The club has five core program areas. The core areas include character, leadership education and career development, and health and life skills, the arts and sports, fitness and recreation. The Boys and Girls Club programs build around this core and offer a diversity of growth op-portunities in a fun and mentored atmosphere. Unit Direc-tor, Andrea Wincenciak, keeps the children active and mo-tivated inside and outside of the club. Some of the Club's fun filled activities include Halloweens' "Monster Bash", the 5K Wiener Run, and Quiz-a-palooza. EVANS CENTER DELIVERS ON SMOKE DETECTOR PROMISE

Members of the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company have followed through with their promise of delivering smoke detectors to winners of a special drawing held at their successful fire prevention open house held Oct. 12. The first winner selected was Terrine Crowden of Church Road. Evans Center Volunteer Firefighters deliv-ered her smoke detector on Saturday-November 16 and shared important information on the proper placement and installation of the detector to maximize its effectiveness. In addition to 50 active fire and emergency medical per-sonnel, Evans Center has FIRECorps members who pro-vide non-emergency skills and services to support the fire department administration and operations; and an active ladies auxiliary that provides on-scene rehab support at emergency incidents and performs large-scale fund-rais-ing events to benefit the fire department and its members. The ladies auxiliary has been in existence almost as long as the fire company, which was incorporated in 1933.The fire company is also supported by their Firefighter Explorer Post#528 for young adults age 14-21. Janine E. Goodwin of Angola, N.Y., a Junior majoring in Chemical Engineering at Clarkson University, received the Dorr B. Begnal '83 Class of 2015 Share Clarkson Di-rect Scholarship during the 2013-2014 academic year. Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC STUDIES THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Students in Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 5 Science class got the opportunity to see real organs. Grade 5 student Eric Bowman brought in a heart, liver, and small intestines of a calf and Zack Barney brought in a heart (and legs) from a deer. The kids just finished a chapter on circula-tory system and it was a perfect ending. They used gloves to touch the organs and talked about what they could see, feel, smell. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AREA-ALL STATE In June 2013 many students participated in the NYS-SMA Area-All State Solo Competition, held at City Hon-ors High School in Buffalo, NY. Those student’s who participated, practiced and performed a solo, scales, and sight-reading. Student’s who participated in the solo fes-tival had the opportunity to be nominated for Area-All State Performing Ensembles. These ensembles are com-promised of the top musicians in 7th, 8th and 9th grades from Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. The students had an application submitted on their be-half, along with their score sheets. This year, Lake Shore Middle School had five students accepted to perform with the Junior High Area-All State Band, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Chorus. This is a high honor for these students and for the Lake Shore Community. Lauren Ingaro (8th gr.) made the String Orchestra, Becket Panfil (8th gr.) made the Symphony Orchestra, Hanna Prince (8th gr.) made the Band and Aryn Fitzgerald and Skylar General for made it in to the Chorus. FORMER REFUGEES VISIT LAKE SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL

On Tuesday, October 29, 2013, 8th grade Team Pride students at Lake Shore Middle School came together to listen to speakers from Journey’s End Refugee Service. Mrs. Andy Cammarata, representing Journey’s End, and four former refugees, came to Lake Shore Middle School to speak about their experiences as refugees in conjunc-tion with 8th grade students reading the novel Inside Out and Back Again in their English class. The novel details the journey of a 10-year-old and her family after the fall of Saigon in 1975 as refugees that end up in America. The four boys (pictured) were invited to tell their story of life as a refugee. Through their heart-wrenching stories, they made connections from their lives to the life of the charac-ter in the novel, and also left the 8th graders with a posi-tive message – “Don’t take anything in life for granted. Take advantage of all the opportunities America provides you.” Journey’s End provides services to about 500 new refugees in the Buffalo area each year. Team Pride stu-dents will begin collecting goods in order to provide Jour-ney’s End with materials to assist refugees in beginning their new life in Buffalo.
