MARLENE M. KENNEDY (nee Bareno) Marlene M. Kennedy (nee Bareno) of Law-tons, NY, entered into rest peacefully in her home December 21, 2013. She was 66, Marlene was born December 17, 1947 in Gowanda, NY to the late Arthur and Elvira (Bareno) Cornfield. She was the be-loved wife of 44 years of Michael T. Kennedy. Lov-ing mother of Keely Ken-nedy, Michael II (Deja) Kennedy, Scott (Kerry) Kennedy and Kevin (Lu-ana Halftown) Kennedy; sister of Marilyn (Ray) Jimerson, Leanna (Urb) Pierce, Andrew Golden, James Golden, Kyle (Lea) Golden and the late Patri-cia Quinn. She is also sur-vived by 9 grandchildren. Marlene was retired from the Seneca Nation of Indi-ans where she worked as a Contract Health Specialist for many years. EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUBTUES. 12/17/13

Board of Elections Commissioner Dennis Ward led the club in the Pledge to the flag at the December meeting of the Evans Democratic Club. He is assisting the Town with obtaining tables and chairs for the Evans Town Park voting location. He responded to inquiries about elections inspector duties and the process associated with changes to assignments. The club was joined by Jim Eagan, the secretary for the New York State Democratic Committee. He discussed the importance of recalling the history and mission of the Democratic Party. "With a strong party, we will attract strong candidates." Mayor Howard M. "Hub" Frawley reported on matters in the Village of Angola. The village board passed a reso-lution to support the stop of invasive fish species in Lake Erie such as Asian carp. He described various holiday related events occurring in the Village of Angola and the proclamation he issued for the 150th anniversary of the First Church of Evans. Mayor Frawley encouraged everyone to support Lake Shore Health care Facility to stay open. "Write to your elected representatives at all levels, to make sure it stays open. It's a real lifesaver, to have a hospital only seven minutes from Town." Town Clerk-elect Lynn Krajacic, the endorsed Demo-cratic candidate, gave a report about the Town Clerk's of-fice. She will be sworn in on Sunday, December 29 at 2 pm at the Town Hall. The event will be MC'd by Town Justice Anthony Barone. Also being sworn in: Demo-cratic Board member Dennis Feldmann and town justice Timothy Cooper. In Krajacic's first week on the job, she will be attending to the Town's 2014 property tax collec-tion.Town Chair Robert "Bob-cat" Catalino presented the slate of Club officers developed by the Nominating Committee. The 2014 slate will be: president - Michelle Parker; vice-president - Patti Latimore; corresponding secretary - San-dra "Sonny" Wiskup; treasurer - Karen Connors Erickson; co-recording secretaries - Kathy Bartus and Kathy Karyc-zak; sergeant-at-arms Bobby Heath; and new trustee: Paul "P.J." McNaughton. Nominations will be accepted from the floor at the January meeting and the election will fol-low. President Michelle Parker announced that Family Court Judge-elect Mary G. Carney has invited her Evans supporters to her swearing-in ceremony. This will be held on Friday, December 20 at 1 pm at the Ceremonial Court-room at Old County Hall, 92 Franklin St.Member Bob Beck reminded everyone to clear a three-foot radius around neighborhood fire hydrants from snow and ice, because minutes make the difference when it comes to stopping a fire. The Club congratulated member Joe Ianni on his election to treasurer of the North Evans Fire District. IMMACULATA ART STUDENTS TAKE TOP THREE SPOTS IN ART CONTEST

For the second year in a row, art students from Immacu-lata Academy participated in WNY United’s Drug Free New Year Art & Poetry Contest and had students place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their age division for art. Sophomores Yaxin (May) Ren (1st) and Mulin Chen (2nd) took the top two spots and senior Justine Chiavetta placed third. Over 500 entries of artwork and poetry were submitted for the contest from 15 schools and community organiza-tions and art teacher, Veronica Benes, couldn’t be more thrilled for her students, “I am so proud of our girls’ enthu-siasm and talent to create the winning posters for this very important drug free event.” The students all attended the WNY United Press Con-ference at the Hamburg Fairgrounds on December 6, where they received their awards, with Erie County Sher-iff Timothy Howard in attendance. Their artwork, along with all of the other entries, are currently on display at the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights.

STUDENTS AT HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY PERFORM “THE JINGLE BELL JUKEBOX” On December 10th students in fourth and fifth grade, as well as the Highland Chorus, performed a 50’s style mini-musical with singing, dancing, costumes and a set that looked just like a soda shop! Songs included Jingle Bell Jukebox, Frosty Hand Jive, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Jingle Bells Rock!, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!, You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch, Sleigh Ride, Santa’s On His Way Medley, and The Reindeer Twist. PRINCIPAL COMES FULL-CIRCLE Jill A. Clark’s journey in the Lake Shore School District has come full circle with her appointment as A. J. Schmidt Elementary School Principal. Thirteen years ago, Mrs. Clark came to the District as a third grade teacher at A. J. Schmidt Elementary. “I am thrilled to be back at the building where I started my career at Lake Shore. This is a phenomenal building with amaz-ing teachers and awesome students and families. I feel like I have come home,” Mrs. Clark said. Her path in the District has taken her to Hoag Elemen-tary School as a third and fourth grade teacher and her pas-sion literacy led her to become a national trainer for Step Up to Writing and teacher on special assignment as a K-12 literacy coordinator for the District, an assignment she still enjoys. She has spent five years of her time in the District at the Middle School working first as the dean of students and then assistant principal. “I have learned so much during my time at the Middle School. I would not be able to support a building without the mentorship of Middle School Principal Erich Reidell. He has really shown me how to lead by example and has taken the time to help me learn,” Mrs. Clark said. “Mrs. Clark is dynamic, knowledgeable, hard -working and enthusiastic. She will be a true asset to the entire dis-trict in this new role as principal as A. J. Schmidt,” Super-intendent of Schools James Przepasniak said. Mrs. Clark begins her new assignment on January 31st. Mrs. Clark resides with her husband in Lake View, the couple have two adult children who are both in education.

Congratulations, Nancy, for your many years of service and for your dedication and commitment to the Lake Shore Central School District.

Nancy Ells is a lifelong resident of the Lake Shore School Community. She graduated from Lake Shore High School in 1978 and has devoted her entire working career to the school district she loves. Nancy worked as a personal care aid for the district prior to becoming the Athletic Department Secretary in 2002. She is married to Joe Ells, a Lake Shore alumnus who recently retired after 35 years of service to the school district. Together Nancy and Joe raised two children, Matthew and Rebecca, who are both LS alumni as well. Nancy is highly devoted and passionate about her job. Her day-to-day responsibilities within the Athletic Department are demanding. Nancy handles each situation with professionalism and understanding. In addition to her daily responsibilities, she has volunteered her time on many school committees that have helped to shape our great school district. Her tireless dedication to our Athletic Department and ability to work with parents, coaches, teachers, officials, community leaders, student / athletes and school administration led to her nomination as Lake Shore Central Schools District Employee of the Month.
