Southtowns Catholic School hosts Immaculata Academy

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Fury” (R) -- Sgt. Collier (Brad Pitt) -- or Wardaddy, as he is called -- has led his tank crew through carnage of World War II, all the way from North Africa to Ger-many. “Fury” is the name of their Sherman tank, manned by Wardaddy, “Bible” (Shia Lebouf), “Gordo” (Michael Pena) and an uncouth hill-billy called “Coon-Ass” (Joe Bernethal). Near the end of the war, the hardened crew gets a fresh-faced typist (Lo-gan Lerman) as a new as-sistant driver. His fi rst task: fi nd his seat and wipe up the remains of his predecessor.Director David Ayer (best known for gritty crime dra-mas like “Training Day” and “End of Watch”) shows bat-tle in brutal intensity. It’s a grim affair, but the mood and tone match the severity of what’s going on. The movie shows heroism in war with-out chest-beating or draping itself in a fl ag.

“The Book of Life” (PG) -- This animated feature mixes pop culture and Mex-ican folklore to make an adventure about life, death, love and goofi ness. Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna) is a passionate young guitar-ist who’s competing with a narcissistic soldier (Chan-ning Tatum) for the love of the fairest -- and toughest -- young lady in town. This love triangle has the atten-tion of the gods of the af-terlife, setting up Manolo for an adventure through the worlds of the dead. The mythology of the mov-ie is a lot of fun, especially the colorful and exciting “Land of the Remembered.” The fi lm was produced by Guillermo del Toro, and

“The Judge” (R) -- This fam-ily/courtroom super-drama reaches out for a hug while smothering your face with pages of old Grisham nov-els. Hank (Robert Downey Jr.) plays a big-city lawyer who journeys back to his un-loved small-town roots for his mother’s funeral. Hank’s father (Robert Duvall) is a judge -- and windbag -- who has ruled his small-town Indiana courtroom for de-cades. Just as the family ten-sion thickens, Judge Father is arrested for a hit-and-run homicide. In his desperate hour, the high-and-mighty patriarch must rely on his son’s defense.

“Art and Craft” -- For years, the most prolifi c art forger

in U.S. history got hundredsof fakes into museums andcollections. His forgerieslooked masterful, and hemimicked the works of art-ists from a wide array of styles and eras. Most of hisart supplies were things youcould pick up at Wal-Mart. He lied and schemed to pass off his work as the originals,but he never really made anymoney doing it. He wasn’ttrying to. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have just returned from seeing my doctor, and was told that the cause of what I experienced is a mystery! In the late afternoon, my husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table. He noticed that a bruise was forming on my right temple -- a dime-size purple mark, with a bump near the hairline. Over the next few hours the bruise grew larger, with red discol-oration down the right side of my face, to the jaw. I had not been injured in any way, and it did not hurt! I called a 24-hour advice nurse, and was told I probably had bro-ken a blood vessel.The next day, I called my doctor for an appointment, just to be on the safe side, but my doctor didn’t have anything to look at. When I got up, all the bruising and discoloration was gone! She told me that there would still be some discoloration if it had been a broken blood vessel, so therefore it was a mystery. -- C.C.

ANSWER: I agree with the nurse that it likely was a broken blood vessel, which can happen spontaneously to anyone. Once the blood is under the skin, it gets cleaned away by cells with enzymes that break down the blood. The color typically goes from dark red to green to yellow. This way, we can tell approximately how old a bruise is.Very superfi cial bleeding also can move, as the blood literally gets pulled by grav-ity (which is why you had a darkening down to the jaw).

Q: Last summer, I repainted the garage. Because I had plans to paint some other rooms, I wrapped up the rollers and brushes in old plastic shopping bags to keep the paint damp. And then ... I forgot about them. This morning while clean-ing my workspace, I found them again. The paint has hardened to stone. Can I save the brushes and rollers, or do I need to just buy all new stuff? -- Brad C., Kan-sas City, Missouri

A: I’m not going to judge. I’ve let far too many paint-laden brushes dry out myself when I got distract-ed. But you should defi nite-ly try to salvage the brushes and rollers before shelling out money for new paint supplies. First, confi rm what kind of paint you used in the garage last summer by checking the label on the cans of leftover paint. It most likely was la-tex-based interior paint, but oil-based paint is still in use. The good news is, latex is the easiest paint to clean up, even when it’s been dried on for some time. Don’t use solvents like turpentine, al-cohol, gasoline or anything else to clean latex, and don’t listen to anyone who insists you use these chemicals. To clean latex paint off your brushes and rollers, fi ll a pail or utility sink with warm, soapy water. (Plain dish soap is fi ne.) Peel the plastic shopping bags off the brush-es and discard them. If piec-es of the plastic stick to the rollers or brushes, just leave them on, rather than poten-tially damaging the brushes by trying to pry them off. Drop the brushes and rollers

into the soapy water and let them sit for at least 20 min-utes. Check to see if the dried la-tex is loosening up, being careful not to bend or tug at the bristles of the paint-brushes. If they’re still stiff with paint, the bristles could fray or break. Keep soaking them, checking every 20 minutes or so, until the latex loosens from the bristles and roller sponges, and you can easily push it off the brush-es.(If the brushes are still stiff or have bits of paint stuck to them, try soaking the bristles in boiling-hot white vinegar for about fi ve minutes, then run a stiff nylon or plastic brush (never metal) through the bristles.)Rinse the soapy water off, shake or spin the rollers and brushes to get rid of excess water, and let them dry on sheet of newspaper or clean towels.Oil paint is a different mat-ter. If you used oil-based

paint and it has dried, youcan try salvaging the brush-es by soaking them in miner-al spirits or paint thinner forseveral minutes. Make surethe room is well-ventilated,and that you wear glovesand eye protection duringthis process. Roller sponges with oil paintdried on them may not besalvagable but if you need topry them off the roller han-dles, apply mineral spirits orpaint thinner to the ends toloosen the dried paint.Finally, store rollers uprightand either hang brushes up or store them in a cleanpaint can, handles down andbrushes upward.
