(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me where you are, my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer for your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecu-tive days and then you must publish, and it will be granted to you. Grateful thanks.

Southtowns Catholic School Student win Patriot's Pen ContestStudents in Mrs. Amber Friend's ELA class participated in a recent essay contest at VFW Post #1419. With several entries across many school districts, Grade 7 student Kyle English came in 3rd and Grade 8 student Joe Gogan came in #6. The students had to submit an essay on "Why Amer-ica's Veterans Should Be Honored". The Patriot's pen is a National Essay contest that gives 6th, 7th and 8th grade students the opportunity to express their opinion on a pa-triotic theme and improve their writing skills, while they compete for worthwhile awards and prizes. The national first place winner will receive a $10,000 Savings Bond. Kyle English & Joe Gogan's essay will now be submitted to the next level of the contest for Erie County.

Evans Garden Club: The Green Path Our gardens have taken a beating so far this winter with more bad weather to come. The following is an article by Lynn Chimera of East Aurora, who has kind-ly given us permission to reproduce it for our Town of Evans gardening friends who may have questions about winter and storm-related garden care. Dear Gardening Friends: It surely was an interesting start to the winter season! The following are some early winter tips: • Since we seem to be having a lot of temperature fluc-tuation without consistent snow cover, it's very important to mulch around shallow rooted or newly planted peren-nials, shrubs and trees. Collecting boughs from the storm or discarded Christmas trees in January works very well as does straw or leaves. • It's not too late to put winter protection on shrubs. Winter winds can be very damaging, even killing some shrubs as happened last winter. A protective covering of burlap or one of the commercial shrub coverings works very well and also protects against deer damage. • When installing fencing to prevent rabbit damage, be sure to make it high enough to compensate for the depth of the snow. If not they can just hop over the snow and munch away. • Road salt and grime are very damaging to soil and plants. When shoveling, avoid putting any gritty snow from under the cars on garden beds. • Avoid walking on soil that doesn't have snow cover to cushion the footfall. This goes for lawn as well as garden beds. If the soil is not frozen, walking on it causes compac-tion. If the ground is frozen but not snow covered, plants and stems can be broken when stepped on. For those of us who experienced the "Snowvember" storm, here are some more helpful tips: • Any broken branches, trees or shrubs should be pruned off at the closest branch join. If the whole tree/shrub is broken, cut it off just above ground level. The root masses can be removed in spring when the soil isn't frozen. • Badly damaged shrubs like forsythia, weigela, barberry and lilac can be cut off just above ground level and will resprout in the spring. • Branches that are bent over from the heavy snow should be left alone. If the tops are still lodged in frozen snow don't try and pull them out. More damage can result from trying to pull them out causing branches to break. The plants are in dormancy now and may right themselves in the spring. It's a slow process so be patient and give the plant a chance. • Many arborvitae trees were knocked right over. If the root ball is intact, you might be able to prop it up. If you do this, make sure the roots are well protected with a deep layer of mulch. If the roots dry out over the winter, the plant will not survive. In the spring you can replant it prop-erly. • For many damaged trees/shrubs, you may not be able to tell how well they will survive storm damage until late in the growing season. Some trees/shrubs may look fine in the spring but fade into late summer. Nature is very tena-cious so let's hope for the best and keep damaged plants well watered. Lynn Chimera is owner and founder of "Lessons from Nature." Her goal is to help people plant and maintain their own gardens without the use of chemicals. She has also written a book entitled Five Keys to Better Gardening.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult son recently has been diagnosed with achalasia, after many months of being misdiagnosed. He has suf-fered unbelievable pain and diffi culty eating or drinking. At fi rst he thought he was having a heart attack. Fortu-nately, that was ruled out. He is going to a prominent gas-troenterologist, who made the diagnosis and has been treat-ing him. He had the balloon procedure, which was not successful. He then had a Bo-tox procedure. This relieved him somewhat. However, he has still had some painful episodes. What can you tell us about this illness? Will he eventually be cured? -- S.G.
ANSWER: Achalasia (awk-uh-LAY-shuh) is a swallow-ing problem caused by degen-eration in the nerve cells in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food to the stomach. Nobody knows why it happens, but it might be au-toimmune or related to a viral infection. Because the nerve cells no longer work properly, the esophagus cannot empty, and food stays in the bottom of the esophagus, causing a “stuck” feeling, which indeed can resemble the symptoms of heart disease. Both solids and liquids are affected.Achalasia may be diagnosed with several different types of tests, including X-rays, bari-um swallow, endoscopy and esophageal manometry (mea-suring pressures inside the esophagus). It’s important to get the right diagnosis, since other conditions, especially cancer of the esophagus, may look like achalasia. The usual fi rst treatment is to widen the opening at the bottom of the esophagus, the

lower esophageal sphincter. Sometimes it takes several attempts to work, but it does work for about 60 percent of people. Botulinum toxin (Bo-tox), which prevents muscle contraction, is effective up to 90 percent of the time, but it needs to be repeated since the effect of the toxin is tem-porary.Surgery is the most defi ni-tive treatment, and it provides long-term relief for about 85 percent of people 10 years after treatment. There isn’t a cure, but most people get relief from one of these treatments.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 86 years old. I had pneumonia in May 2013 and was very sick for seven days in the hospi-tal. Since I got home, I have had no sense of smell or taste. Can you tell me what caused it, and whether I will ever get it back? -- L.M.ANSWER: Since it happened in the hospital, it’s likely that something happened there to cause it. Sudden loss of smell and taste most likely are associated with infec-tion, injury and medications. The organisms that cause
pneumonia could possiblyaffect your sense of smell as well (disorders of both smelland taste usually are primar-ily related to loss of abilityto smell). Injury can happenin the hospital, especiallyif you had to have a breath-ing tube placed through yournose. That leaves drugs as theother category, and MANY medications can cause loss of sense of smell.Since this has been goingon for more than a year anda half, the only common re-versible cause is medication. It would be worthwhile toask your doctor to review allof your medicines, especiallyany that might have beenstarted around the time of thepneumonia.***Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individualletters, but will incorporate them in the col-umn whenever possible.Readers may email questionsto [email protected]. COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS
By Sam StruckhoffPICKS OF THE WEEK“Boyhood” (R) -- Over the course of 12 years, direc-tor Richard Linklater made a fi lm about growing up in which we get to see an ac-tor age. Mason (Ellar Col-trane) lives with his mom (Patricia Arquette) and his spastic older sister (Lore-lei Linklater). Every so of-ten, their rolling-stone dad (Ethan Hawke) comes back around to teach the kid a lesson about being a man or voicing his feelings. It’s a big story told in a series of small moments.Starting when he was just 7 years old, Ellar Coltrane worked on the fi lm shoot with Linklater for a little while each summer. The result is Mason’s coming-of-age story, in which we see how a contemplative boy caught between his es-tranged parents changes over years. It may not be the most life-altering story, but it truly is a unique movie-watching experience.
“Get On Up” (PG-13) -- James Brown, the Godfa-ther of Soul, lived one of those lives made for musi-cal biopics. He grew up im-poverished in a dusty part of Georgia with an abusive father (Lennie James) and a mother who walked out (Vi-ola Davis). Chadwick Bose-man (the lead in last year’s Jackie Robinson biopic, “42”), brings Brown to life with a crackling energy and fervent commitment. Director Tate Taylor (“The Help”) shows the highs, lows and explosive performances that defi ned the man. Behind the scenes, Brown could be a tyrant and a monster con-sumed by drugs and ego, but a completely different vision comes out when he’s break-ing himself down on stage. The wild use of fl ashbacks and uneven pacing can be
diffi cult, but Boseman’s per-formance keeps you watch-ing and caring.
“Horns” (R) -- Ig Parrish (Daniel Radcliffe) and Meri Williams (Juno Temple) are two little lovebirds, until Meri’s body is found bru-talized in the woods. Ig, even with his boy-next-door looks, becomes the prime suspect and the most hated guy in town. Depressed and reviled over a crime he didn’t commit, Ig starts to grow horns, literally. As Ig’s visage becomes more devilish, people around him feel compelled to spill their darkest desires to him, seek-ing permission to do the bad things they really want to do. It’s a dark fantasy thrill-er comedy with a new twist, but it’s so distracted that it can’t settle on a tone. A lack
of tonal clarity makes it hardto laugh at jokes or gasp atdrama.
“Left Behind” (PG-13) -- This is a religious disasterfl ick that goes light on the religion and comes out as an overall disaster. Nicolas Cage (oh yes) stars as Ray-ford Steele (cool name, bro), a morally impure airline pilot who gets left behindwhen the biblical rapturetakes all of the good peopleto heaven. He’s fl ying acommercial jet over the At-lantic ocean when a bunch of people disappear, leavingonly empty clothes behind.Rayford has to safely landthe plane -- which seemspretty diffi cult, even though he’s a pilot -- while his col-lege-age daughter wanders apartially emptied New York City.

MOMENTS IN TIMEThe History Channel
• On Jan. 9, 1768, in Lon-don, Englishman Philip Ast-ley stages the fi rst modern circus. Astley, a former cav-alry sergeant major, found that if he galloped in a tight circle, centrifugal force al-lowed him to perform seem-ingly impossible feats on a horse’s back.
• On Jan. 6, 1838, Samuel Morse’s telegraph system is demonstrated for the fi rst time in New Jersey. The telegraph, a device that used electric impulses to trans-mit encoded messages over a wire, would eventually revolutionize long-distance communication.
• On Jan. 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roos-evelt declares the massive Grand Canyon in north-western Arizona a national monument. Congress did not offi cially outlaw private
development in the Grand Canyon until 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Grand Canyon National Park Act.
• On Jan. 7, 1929, Walter Chrysler, the founder of the Chrysler Corporation, one of America’s Big Three au-tomakers, is featured on the cover of Time magazine as its Man of the Year. In 1928, his company had acquired the Dodge Brothers Com-pany, thereby becoming the world’s third-largest auto-maker.
• On Jan. 5, 1933, construc-tion begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers start excavating 3.25 mil-lion cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages. The Golden Gate Bridge of-fi cially opened on May 27, 1937, the longest bridge span in the world at the time.
• On Jan. 8, 1946, Elvis Pre-sley receives his fi rst guitar. Competing versions of thestory say that what Presleyreally wanted for his birth-day was a rifl e or a bicycle. Instead, his mother tookhim to the Tupelo HardwareStore and bought a $6.95 guitar.
• On Jan. 10, 1976, “Con-voy,” by C.W. McCall, is theNo. 1 song on the U.S. pop charts. “Convoy” fueled thetrucking/CB-radio craze thathad millions of Americanscreating “handles” for them-selves -- Rubber Duck, Pink Lady, Scooter Pie, etc. -- and daydreaming about theglamorous life of the long-haul trucker. Hollywoodresponded with a parade of related works, including“Smokey and the Bandit”(1977).
