Brian Galfo Scholarship Awards This year’s winners of the $1000 Brian Galfo Athletic Scholarship are Jessica Ackley, Melanie Linsmair and Tyler Becker. This scholarship is in memory of a former Lake Shore Central varsity athlete who tragically passed away before fulfulling his dreams. The recipient must be a three sport athlete, be an unselfish and competitive team player, be respectful of coaches and teammates, and be a team player. Also, this year’s winners of the $100 Brian Galfo Award are A.J. Schmidt 5th graders Aiden Thomas and Parker McSkimming. The recipients of this award must possess a positive attitutde along with willingness to work hard to achieve and overcome difficulties. Pictured above are Parker McSkimming and Aiden Thomas.

On Wednesday, July 22nd at 7 pm, Cahal Dunne, an outstanding entertainer will present his fast moving stage show at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. The event is sponsored by the Evans Township Lions Club. It has been several years since Cahal has ap-peared locally, and several people in the community have asked, “When is that

Irish Showman going to return to Angola?” Cahal Dunne - Ireland’s “Happy Man” - possesses that cer-tain magical quality known in show business as “it.” “It” tran-scends talent. “It” comes from deep within a great entertainer and washes over an audience captivating them. This native of County Cork has a following of loyal admirers and friends that is unique in the rich history of Pittsburgh, PA entertainment. He continues to make new friends with each appearance. Refreshments are available at the park and are sold by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts. The ice cream man and his truck have been making a stop at the park each week. Handicapped parking is available off Center and Park Streets for early arriv-als. Next week’s concert on Wednesday, July 29 will feature the Lancaster Carnival Kids Steel Band in their first ever ap-pearance at the Gazebo. The evening will be sponsored by the “Friends” of the Village Group.

New York Army National Guard Announces Soldier Promotions

Miss Cassi Johnson's Grade 3 class participated in The Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program. Stan Cope, President of Bonnie Plants said it was a wonderful way to engage our children's interest in agriculture, while teaching them not only the basics of gardening but the importance of our food systems and of growing our own. This unique, innovative program exposes children to agriculture and demonstrates, through hands-on experience, where food comes from. * When baby’s teething, try this trick from a grandma: Wet a washcloth and put it in a zip-top baggie in the freezer. When frozen, re-move it from the bag and let the baby chew on it. Its texture and temperature are soothing to little gums, and it can be rinsed and refrozen easily.

* For fresh oil stains, sprin-kle with kitty litter and grind into the oil with your foot or a stiff brush. Then sweep up. Repeat as necessary.

* Hardware stores sell spe-cial bladders that can be fi lled and put inside a toi-

Alfred University Names Angola Resident to Dean’s List

Kade A. McGarrity, a resident of Angola, NY, was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2015 semester at Alfred University (AU). He is a senior in the Inamori School of Engineering. Students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average to qualify for Dean’s List. McGarrity is a Ceramic Engineering major at AU, which is ranked fourth by the 2015 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings among 15 institutions selected as Great Regional Schools at Great Prices in the north. It was music to our ears – as the Hamburg Kingsmen Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps marched down Brant-Farnham Road and into the Brant Town Park on Father’s Day 06/21/2015. Everyone enjoys a parade, especially on a beautiful summer day! In with the beating drums and brass horns, flooded the memories of past Straw-berry Festival Days to many of the Brant residents who played a part in those long ago festivities. To have a marching band in a parade is a special treat and this father’s day we were all treated to engaging and toe tapping marches. Patriotic tunes brought tears to eyes and hands to heart. Even though it was short, it was still a magnificent parade! After the parade, the band stayed and performed a con-cert consisting of 3-4 num-bers as well. Our town of Brant was honored to have the Hamburg Kingsmen pay us a visit and we hope

Buffalo Aerial Dance Performs at Brant-Summer Festival

On Sunday, 6/21/2015, those in attendance at the Brant Summer festival were in for a captivating and suspenseful surprise! Our eyes fixed on a 19 Feet high rigging; we were mesmerized by the performances of 6 very talented ladies, the youngest at only 10 years old! First on the Trapeze was Erica Cope (Teacher/Owner) – a swinging and daring performance in the bright sunshine which set an exciting stage for the performances that fol-lowed. The 5 Aerial Silk performers, were just as fascinating as they had our undivided attention. Each lady’s energetic creativity shined through as they performed their routines 15’ above the ground on the 2 purple “silks” which were tied a suspenseful 19’ above! It was a bit of a windy day which added new tests to already strength consuming, but yet graceful routines. The Buffalo Aerial Dance performers were: Erica Cope, Shannon Caligiuri, Kenzi Cox, Kristen Bloom as well as Brant native Jolene (Friend) Lemke and Jolene’s 10 year old daughter, Nora. Special 150th Anniversary Lincoln Funeral Train Route

Postmark Available As one of the 16 Post Offices participating in the 150th Anniversary of the Lincoln Funeral Train Route Postmark, the Angola Post Office was busy hand-stamping all the mail on June 30th, 2015. This was the first day that the unique postmark was available and the interest in the proj-ect was amazing! To date (as of 07/01/2015) 136 requests for the cancel have been processed, with plenty more com-ing in. Designed by Angola native Christian J. LoGrasso, the postmark is specific to Angola, NY. According to the Buffalo and Erie Rail Road Time Table, Lincoln’s Funeral Train was scheduled to pass through the Village of Angola on April 27, 1865 at 11:13 PM. It is written that many people along the entire train route from Washington, DC to Springfield, Illinois, lit bon fires and kept vigil along the train tracks; wishing to pay their final respects to our 16th President as his funeral car journeyed past. Per Joe Pisarski, the Evans Historical Society will have Angola, NY “Lincoln” Buttons and Lincoln Postcards available for sale at their Art Show at the Evans Historical Museum, Route 5 on Sunday 7/5/2015. The “Lincoln” event is initiated by Brant Historian Patty Friend and the Brant-Farnham His-torical Society in cooperation with the Buffalo Office of the USPS. Information on all 16 unique designs can be found at http://about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/pb2015.htm. Postal bulletin dated 06.25.2015. In addition to Angola, other Post Offices participating are: Buffalo, Athol Springs, Hamburg, Lakeview, North Evans, Derby, Farnham, Irving, Silver Creek, Sheridan, Dunkirk, Brocton, Portland, West-field and Ripley.

Over the past few months, the kids at the Lake Shore Boys & Girls Club (including the community service group the kids run called Torch Club) helped to spread the word and gather clothing donations for the needy. The members’ ef-forts should be commended as they collected three large bags and two large boxes of various clothing items! Thank you to all the families and individuals that donat-ed to this great cause. The items were donated to the local Good Will. Through-out the school year, Torch Club members select wor-thy causes and charities they would like to help and they run events, activities, or spread the word in order to make it happen. Earlier in the year they also orga-nized and ran a bake sale to raise money for the SPCA. According to Unit Director Justin Simet, “The Club is about more than just having fun. Of course we want our members to enjoy them-selves while they are here, but we also want to instill values and character that will prepare them for adult-hood. We are constantly seeking ways to enhance and develop opportunities for these kids to understand and appreciate the value of community service and giving back to others, and they often discover how en-joyable it can be. If at the end of the day our members leave feeling good about helping someone else, then we’ve done our job.” The Club is also gearing up for another school year, heading into its fifth year of operation. Club program-ming begins on the first

day of school, September 2, 2015. We are currently seek-ing part-time staff positions for the Club and are accept-ing applications now.
