EVANS YOUTH BASEBALL 2014Evans Youth Baseball is a local affiliate of Babe Ruth Baseball, Babe Ruth Softball, and Cal Ripken Leagues. Each year, it provides organized house and tournament baseball opportunities for approximately 500 children. Practices begin around April 1st. The house league season will begin on May 5th and end around July 1st for age 12 and younger.

RICHARD H. GEITNER Richard Howard Geit-ner, 92, of Angola died January 14, 2014. Richard was born on January 11, 1922 in Silver Creek, NY to Andrew and Cresence Geitner, and was the broth-er of the late Iva Brown, Douglas Geitner, Joan Mc-Gowan, and Kathleen Mur-rett. Richard was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces, and a World War II B-17 pilot for more than 1,300 humanitarian and logistical

mission hours in Europe and Africa. After the war, he came back to WNY, where he met his wife, Ber-nice, and settled in Angola. He owned and operated the New Angola Theatre from 1948 to 1995, and also operated the Grandview Drive-In Theatre. Rich-ard was a member of Most Precious Blood Church and the VFW. He enjoyed hunting, played trumpet in local bands, traveling, telling stories, fishing, gar-dening, and was a amiable mentor to all who worked with him. Survivors are his be-loved wife of 63 years, Bernice Rita Geitner, born to the late Louis and Ju-liette Leisner of Gowanda, New York; daughters Nan-cy Dallaire (late J.V. Paul) of Fort Pierce, Florida and Linda (Ronnie) Adams of Derby, NY; sons, Law-rence, and Thomas (Marga-ret) Geitner of San Mateo, California; grandchildren, Rachel and Mark Dallaire, Joshua and Leah Adams, Gregory and Shelby Geit-ner; and great granddaugh-ter, Dakota Bastedo. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, NY, on Saturday, January 18, at 11:00 a.m., followed by internment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Angola, NY. YMCA WRAP-AROUND VISITS HOLLEY APARTMENTS

On Wednesday December 18th the YMCA Wrap-Around class walked to the Holley Apartments to sing Christmas Carols and spread some holiday cheer. Peter & Paul Catholic School, located in Ham-burg, recently received a $500 ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Grant, which will help support the science program. The award was made possible by Lehigh Gas Corpora-tion in partnership with Exxon-Mobil Corporation, which was supported by the station located at 7185 Boston State Road in Hamburg. SS. LAKESHORE YOUTH SOCCER EXPERIENCING A RENAISSANCE

There have always been so called “developmental hot spots” in certain regions for specific sports or hobbies. The Lakeshore Youth Soccer Association is now in the baby steps of a talent development renaissance that aims to turn the Southtowns of Western New York into a Soccer talent Hotbed. Accomplishing this goal will not happen over night, but the blueprint has been built and members of the organization are putting the efforts in to getting there. Director of Coaching for LYSA Scott MacLean stated, “Step one has been to provide the opportunity to play and practice year round. You simply cannot try to develop talent for 3 months and then take 9 months off. If you do that, you are immediately limiting your growth potential.” This year is the first year that LYSA is provid-ing training all year round and they want players to be able to sign up for programs year round as well. During the winter months, they meet every Saturday at the Seneca Nation Cattaraugus Community Center. The organization also understands that kids have many things going on year round and they have been very receptive about that issue. “Kids should absolutely be well rounded. I was a 3 sport athlete when I was younger and a musician, so I certainly understand how that works. The mistake is to eliminate the opportunity, and then lose them for months at a time” Scott explained. “This year we made the winter training sessions as affordable as possible as well as convenient as possible, and if a participant misses every once and awhile it is OK as long as they are making the effort.” The ses-sions from December until February are strictly for tech-nical development and are treated almost like a camp a player would go to for Empire (the main premiere club in New York). “What you get for the price in my opin-ion is pretty remarkable and it’s something that everybody with kids who need exercise should be participating in. MUSIC DEPARTMENT ENTERTAINS SENIOR CENTER

Recently several music ensembles from Lake Shore Se-nior High School visited the Angola Senior Center and en-tertained the members for their annual holiday luncheon. The guests were treated to holiday favorites, carols, a sing a long and traditional pieces as well. The clarinet choir, chamber orchestra and jazz ensemble were well received and much appreciated by all in attendance. This is an an-nual event at the Center but the first time so many groups performed. The groups were led by Mrs. Carrie Poissant, Mr. Glenn Molik and Mr. Eric Blodgett; all teachers at the Senior High. WGRZ Channel 2's Andy Parker sent in a DK Eyewit-ness Weather Book. He inscribed the inside with a note that said "Congratulations on a Great Effort in The Weath-er Machine Food Drive Challenge! Enjoy the Weather, Andy Parker". The students collected food in November & December for the WNY Food Bank. Our project for this month was building a balsa wood bridge. The students were encouraged to research balsa bridge designs online before coming to the club. The bridges were tested for how much weight they can hold. Shop club is for students in Grades 6, 7 & 8. The kids are learning the basics of hand tools, simple power tools, lumber and material options and sizes, what tools to use for specific jobs or tasks, how to draw and design projects, and how to use simple machines to solve problems in real life.
