summer really does have its benefits, not only letting you take advantage of the weather, but actually affording you a taste of the resort lifestyle. Pools are for lounging and cooling off – don’t forget the sunscreen and something refreshing to drink! Balconies are your own private terrace, a retreat for you to enjoy however you see fit. Forget storing things out there, get a little table, a comfy chair and enjoy a cup of tea, a glass of wine, a romantic sunset. And there’s more time to spend out in your neighbourhood, at the park or just enjoying your building’s amenities because you don’t have to mow the lawn, pull the weeds or water the garden. Besides, less layers means less laundry to do. Can’t complain about that.

So what does it cost to store your stuff here in Canada? In any of our major cities, you can expect to pay anything from $90 - $220 a month, plus taxes, for a typical five-by-10-foot (50 square-foot) unit. That’s just enough space to store the contents of one bedroom or living room.

Vancouver, unsurprisingly, is the most expensive city for storage, with an average cost of $177/month. Toronto comes in second, at $156/month, with Calgary close behind at $153. Montreal is a relative bargain, with an average price of only $118/month – even in the city centre. Winnipeg and Halifax are also more reasonable, ringing in at $114 and $109/month, respectively.

Many of the larger storage companies offer rental incentives such as first month free, or a small discount (five to 10 per cent) for payment 6 to 12 months in advance. You can also save a lot by choosing a facility on the edge of town or in a rural area, but these drive-up spaces are often less reliably serviced for pests, and can be plagued by the dust of gravel parking lots.

You could pay to store your lovely Ektorp sofa for a year, which will run you $2124 in Vancouver, or $1308 in Halifax. When you weigh that cost against selling it for a couple hundred bucks and buying a brand new one

So what does it cost to store your stuff here in Canada? In any of our major cities, you can expect to pay anything from $90 - $220 a month, plus taxes, for a typical five-by-10-foot (50 square-foot) unit. That’s just enough space to store the contents of one bedroom or living room.

Vancouver, unsurprisingly, is the most expensive city for storage, with an average cost of $177/month. Toronto comes in second, at $156/month, with Calgary close behind at $153. Montreal is a relative bargain, with an average price of only $118/month – even in the city centre. Winnipeg and Halifax are also more reasonable, ringing in at $114 and $109/month, respectively.

Many of the larger storage companies offer rental incentives such as first month free, or a small discount (five to 10 per cent) for payment 6 to 12 months in advance. You can also save a lot by choosing a facility on the edge of town or in a rural area, but these drive-up spaces are often less reliably serviced for pests, and can be plagued by the dust of gravel parking lots.

You could pay to store your lovely Ektorp sofa for a year, which will run you $2124 in Vancouver, or $1308 in Halifax. When you weigh that cost against selling it for a couple hundred bucks and buying a brand new one

Pack a trash bag that you can lay out in your place so garbage doesn’t end up on the floor or worse, in the hallway where you’re sure to rub your new neighbors the wrong way.

6. WINE + GLASSES: You’ll be itching for a bottle of wine by the end of the night, just make sure you don’t crack this open before all the heavy lifting is done. Once you’re ready to call it a day, sit back, relax and cheers to your new home! Tomorrow is another day.

YOU’VE SEARCHED, YOU’VE PLANNED, YOU’VE PACKED AND NOW THE BIG DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED - you’re moving into your new place! Your moving day survival kit is a combination of things you should keep on hand as well as in a clearly labeled box which you will move to your new place first and foremost. It will include a mix of items that you would normally pack for a weekend camping trip as well as all the essentials to get over a really bad first date.

Grab one final box, and don’t forget to pack any of these items in your survival kit:

1. TOILET PAPER: Congratulations! You, your friends and your movers have officially made it to your new place with a truck filled with all your stuff. First things first, where is the bathroom?

It doesn’t matter if you’re driving 20 minutes or two hours to your new place, someone will need to use the bathroom – and always sooner than expected. Avoid the obvious and make sure you have toilet paper on hand.

2. PHONE CHARGER: Let’s be honest with ourselves, if there’s anything we can’t live without - it’s our phone. 5. TRASH BAGS: Everything from that gum you’ve been chewing all morning to your granola bar wrapper are going to have to go somewhere. Pack a trash bag that you can lay out in your place so garbage doesn’t end up on the floor or worse, in the hallway where you’re sure to rub your new neighbors the wrong way.

6. WINE + GLASSES: You’ll be itching for a bottle of wine by the end of the night, just make sure you don’t crack this open before all the heavy lifting is done. Once you’re ready to call it a day, sit back, relax and cheers to your new home! Tomorrow is another day.

YOU’VE SEARCHED, YOU’VE PLANNED, YOU’VE PACKED AND NOW THE BIG DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED - you’re moving into your new place! Your moving day is bound to be busy and chaotic, and unfortunately, by the time all your things reach your new place the madness still won’t be over (sorry, not sorry). But before you get lost in a sea of boxes in order to find everything from bathroom essentials and “oh no... where are my keys,” I suggest you plan ahead with one last item - a moving day survival kit.

Your moving day survival kit is a combination of things you should keep on hand as well as in a clearly labeled box which you will move to your new place first and foremost. It will include a mix of items that you would normally pack for a weekend camping trip as well as all the essentials to get over a really bad first date.

Grab one final box, and don’t forget to pack any of these items in your survival kit:

1. TOILET PAPER: Congratulations! You, your friends and your movers have officially made it to your new place with a truck filled with all your stuff. First things first, where is the bathroom?
