REFLECTIONS FOR EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

GOD IS LOVE Love: “it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.” 1 Corinthians 13:6 Christ calls all to leave behind wrongdoing in order to rejoice in Him who is truth, in Him who is life. PRACTICE : A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan wom-an, for a drink?” (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” [The woman] said to him, “Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the well is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” Jesus said to her, “Go call your husband and come back.” The woman answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus answered her, “You are right in saying, ‘I do not have a husband. ’For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.” John 4:8-26. Jesus extends to all an invitation to truth. He offers Himself. He offers the Kingdom of God. But He reminds us gently that to enjoy this invitation one must be willing to follow God's commandments. Consider that when the Samaritan woman accepts the invitation to living water, Jesus gently tells her to correct her sin and come back. [Love] it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. 1 Corinthians 13:6 Pray that you will have the love to leave behind sin for the Kingdom of Heaven. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Every Friday 9:00am to 9:00pm in the Chapel of Adoration If you would like to join The Adoration Program at St. Frances Cabrini call or email Alice Burns 919-306-6293 [email protected]

In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and

men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the

Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as

Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ

who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called

to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World

Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to

highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church

BIBLE INSIGHTS--PSALM 71

This psalm has been called "Prayer in Time of Old Age".

The excerpts in our weekly prayer book reflect the thoughts of one who been through many experiences where the psalmist has developed a strong and unwavering dependence upon God , who, he recognizes as the "rock and fortress" which saves and protects him time after time. Surely the wisdom of old age shines here. But there are many other thoughts in the psalm which are not included here that reflect the darker side of aging: fears, frailness, vulnerability, anger and retaliation as the psalmist asks God to punish his enemies.

What a contrast is the reading from St. Paul who writes on Love! Here we find the essence of what Jesus' message was all about, "a still more excel-lent way," of living out one's days. He shows that love surpasses all things, whether they be material, thoughts or deeds, nothing can replace the value of love. This is the Eternal Wisdom where we will find the happiness and joy we seek on earth and the bliss of eternal happiness with God in Heaven. Take time to re-read both passages at home during the coming week.

God bless us all. Cathy LaDisa

Part III/III: Liturgical Minutes: “COMMUNICATING the WORD WITHOUT WORDS”

Keeping in mind what the first two articles in our series tell us about religious art, it is safe to say we can all give a reason-

able explanation to the words, “Communicating the Word Without Words,” as relates to art and our faith. These words are

actually the title of a reprint (courtesy of EWTN) of an interview conducted by Tania Mann for L’Osservatore Romano

English Edition, newspaper of the Holy See, Weekly Edition in English, 26 August 2009, page 5.

Interviewed is Monsignor Timothy Verdon, Canon of Florence Cathedral, who is author of many books on sacred art and

is an art historian who has been invited by the Vatican Museum to serve as an advisor on the restoration of the Pauline Chapel

in the Apostolic Palace. His most recent book written in 2014 is the most ‘magnificent’ Art & Prayer, The Beauty of Turning

to God.” In his book, Msgr. Verdon explains images “work in believers as tools teaching them how to turn to God, and aided

by illustrations of fine art throughout the centuries, Art & Prayer explores in detail how prayer can become the fruit of a

sanctified imagination – a way of beauty and turning to God.” His work at the Cathedral brings him into contact with “some of

the most awe-inducing, world-renowned art in the Catholic Church’s cultural heritage.” Among all the amazing pieces,

however, “the most beautiful work of art he has come across is one that many do not even consider as such: the Liturgy.”

In addressing how art serves the bond between the Mystery of God and the Liturgy of the Church, Msgr. Verdon explains

that because of the great desire for human beings to see God, the works of visual art which are a result of “privileged moments

in which (people) come into direct contact with Christ, and which usually tell stories from the life of Christ, or of Mary or of

the saints, in whom we also contemplate Christ – the works of art are part of this process.” He says Jesus is the first teacher of

how to combine things and actions and words in order to create a composite work, which is basically a work of art. And that is

the Liturgy. Christ is continually performing acts which invite us to reflect and understand that action; the washing of feet is

one such example.

Msgr. Verdon talks about how architecture provides a way to discover the beauty of other faiths. “Even if I don’t agree with

what these people believe, I have to recognize that there’s great beauty in it.” There are elements of great beauty, there are

genuine reflections of God in all the great faiths of history.” One of Msgr. Verdon’s dreams is to “one day do a very beautiful

photo exhibit of all things I just described – the Temple, Christian architecture and mosques – here in Florence.”

He goes on to talk about serving as consultant at the Synods of Bishops of 2005 and 2008 and how Pope Benedict XVI was

so keenly aware of the “role of beauty in the life of the faith, that larger art form which all of the Liturgy is.” In Sacramentum

Caritatis, summary of the Synod, Pope Benedict insisted on the ‘ars celebrandi, the art of celebrating Mass.’ “Yes, we receive

the real body of Christ, but the whole process in which we’re called to become a part -- the Mass, with the Church, the priest,

the vestments, and so on – is a work of art.” In the introduction of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, then Cardinal and

reissued as Pope, Benedict XVI “stresses the fact that in our modern, image oriented society, sacred images can often say more

even that the words of Scripture.” For many centuries “people couldn’t understand the Gospel because it was proclaimed in

Latin. Even today, when people are half-attentive, the images that are there reinforce ………and in some cases probably even

take the place of listening to the Gospel. So images have been so much a part of the context in which we Catholics actively

transmit the word of God.”

Finally, Msgr. Verdon says that much of the art is a ‘communication of Jesus as a child, a man on the Cross, a man who

rises.’ “…….the human condition is so important that God himself entered into it – in order to save it from destruction, to

elevate it to the level of his own divinity. Even if you don’t want to believe this, it is a part of understanding Western culture.

You really have to be aware that these dynamics were at work for 1500 years, if not more.”
