27th Sunday in Ordinary Time,

Gn 2:18-24 Ps 128:1-2 ,3,4-5,6 Heb 2:9-11 Mk10:2-16

The reading from Genesis today narrates the creation of the Woman as “a suitable partner for “the man because,

God declares, “it is not good for the name to be alone” (v18). After creating “various wild animals and various

birds”(v19) and presenting them to the man, the Lord God realize that none of them is adequate . This leads to the deci-

sion to form a woman from “one ribs” (v 21). This new creation finally proves to be “ suitable partner for the man” (v

20).

The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews speaks of how Jesus “for a little while’ was made “ lower than the an-

gels” (v9). In sharing our humanity, The word “consecrates” (v11) us through his suffering as he brings “ many chil-

dren to glory” (v10).

The Pharisees in today’s Gospel seek Jesus’s view on divorce. In Jesus’s day there were various schools of

thought: Judaism based its permission to divorce on the word of Moses (v 3), but only the husband could initiate a di-

vorce; Roman law permitted a wife to divorce her husband as well. Jesus’s statement concerning a wife divorcing her

husband that Mark’s text is addressed to a non-Jewish audience. The early church evidently had an evolving opinion

about divorce, for we see Jesus forbidding it in Mark and Luke, but in Matthew’s text Jesus allows it in certain cases(see

Mt5:32). Divorce continues to be an issue today, as illustrated by the discussions leading up to this month’s Synod on

the Family in Rome . For Jesus and his church, there are two points of concern: God’s intention for marriage and the

reality of broken relationships.

For Reflection: How can I help foster healthy relationships among those who are married? The Bible pre-

sents man and woman as equals. Do I accept this view?

Please note that “Prayers for the Sick” will be announced from the altar for 4 weeks. Then the names will be in

the bulletin for another 4 weeks. Please inform the Rectory if you wish to add a loved one for prayers, or to have

someone’s name removed. Please note that “Prayers for the Sick” will be announced from the altar for 4 weeks.
