REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD T oday we are here at God’s invitation to hear a message of repentance and hope. Jesus instructs us to repent of our sins and proclaims that “the Kingdom of God is at hand”. He calls the fishermen of Galilee to follow him: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men”. May we respond like those first called by Jesus who left behind their old lives to follow Jesus. A recurring theme at the beginning of Ordinary Time is what we heard during the Christmas Season, light. Isaiah speaks about “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus’ ministry of preaching worldwide enlightenment and universal deliverance. This char- acterizes the Kingdom among us “Teaching”, “Proclaiming” and “Curing”. The Kingdom will need laborers and Jesus immediately sets out to find them. Walking by the Sea of Galilee he called those he sees. They respond “immediately” leaving everything behind—nets, boats even their father. To be children of the light of Christ means that we are like these first disciples, willing to sacrifice the things of this world in order to follow Christ. Let us open our hearts to hear our names called by Jesus as did Peter, Andrew, James and John. FROM REACHING-OUT COMMUNITY SERVICES TO THE PARISHIONERS OF ST. FRANCES CABRINI: Our 11th “Annual Operation Christmas Smiles” event on Saturday, December 17th was a won-derful time of the year for over 600 children. The children also enjoyed a magic show, many arcade games, prizes, face painting, balloon characters, food, snacks and a Meet and Greet with Santa. The se-cond event “Santa on Wheels” was held here at our organization on Tuesday, December 20th which we provided toys for an additional 200 children. Our final toy giveaway program provided 200 toys for two other emergency food programs we help each year. With the total of blessing 1,000 children, our goal has been met because of amazing people like you who make it happen. We would like to thank you for spon-

THIS WEEKEND SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCHES IN NEED Each year, the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE) assists Catholics, many of whom live in countries once dominated by the Soviet regime, with rebuilding their com-munities. This important collection supports 28 countries in a myriad of ways, from providing funds to rebuild church structures to supporting programs that lift up the dignity of the marginal-ized to offering scholarships that reinforce the in-tellectual life of the Church. By taking up this col-lection at Mass, you help to build the future for the faithful in this region.

OUR PARISH SCHOOL, ST. PETER CATHOLIC ACADEMY is a Jr. Pre-K to 8th Grade Catholic School with an experienced supportive faculty. We offer remedial programs through our Learning Center and Department of Education Title I Services, as well as an Honor Program A.S.K.(Always Seeking Knowledge) for eligible 6th-8th grade students. Along with Laptops and Smartboards we have an Apple Computer Lab and Wi-Fi Internet Access throughout the School. An After School Program is available for parents who need it and is supervised by two experienced faculty members. Yellow

School Bus Service is also available to eligible students from Kindergarten to 6th grades. The Academy, is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, after a self-evaluation by the faculty and staff as well as the drafting of strategic plans to ensure our future.

BENEFITS OF A CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE EMPHASIS ON CATHOLIC VALUES HEALTHY SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS A CARING COMMUNITY

A CATHOLIC EDUCATION AT OUR ACADEMY MEANS: Christ as a model— the goal of a Catholic education is to help children mature into Christ-like people. Stu-

dents are encouraged to recognize the presence of Christ in themselves and others. The religious formation of your child/children begun at home is continued in our Catholic Academy

Self discipline— students are expected to take responsibility for their actions, to respect others and to make good decisions in the context of their faith experience

A safe supportive environment— reverence for the human dignity of every person comes from recognizing Christ in self and others. Our academy is a “Christ-centered zone”

High expectations— Catholic school teachers expect every student to achieve

Committed parents— you are the first teachers of your child in the ways of faith. At our Catholic Academy parents take an active role in their children’s education. The Academy supports families and works with you for the benefit of your children

JANUARY 23rd A DAY OF PRAYER AND PENANCE FOR LIFE

In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The Mass "For Peace and Justice" should be celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no..373) Teaching on Abortion from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person---among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life." CCC 2270

For Your Reflection and Prayer: Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is bliss, taste it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it. ~St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

In the example of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, we come to appreciate even more fully the sacredness of the family, which in God’s plan is based on the lifelong fidelity of a man and a woman consecrated by the marriage covenant and accepting of God’s gift of new life. How much the men and women of our time need to reappropriate this fundamental truth, which stands at the foundation of society, and how important is the witness of married couples for the formation of sound consciences and the building of a civilization of love!~ Pope Benedict XVI

At every Mass, we should offer special prayers for our nation and her leaders, in order that the culture of death may be overcome and a civilization of love may be steadfastly advanced. All Catholics throughout the nation should take part in Eucharistic Adoration and in the praying of the Rosary for the restoration of the respect for human life and for the safeguarding of the integrity of the family. In our prayers, we should seek, above all, the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, under her title of the Immaculate Conception. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke This Monday, January 23rd after the 8:30 AM Mass our Parish Right to Life Committee will pray a Rosary for Life by our Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe, The Patroness of the Unborn. It will include a Marian Litany for Life. All are invited to participate.
