HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God's love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defens-es, however we came by them, and welcome Christ's love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and gener-ously given. We have only to accept it. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Thomas Merton Center of Palo Alto presents

A Granddaughter Remembers Dor-othy Day -

A presentation by Kate Hennessy

Sunday, October 14, 2018, at 3:00 p.m.

Arrillaga Recreation Center, Menlo Park Civic Center, 700 Alma St., Menlo Park

Kate Hennessy’s memoir about her notable grandmoth-er is titled: Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty. Published in 2017, Kate Hennessy’s book illu-minates in intimate detail the life and work of Dorothy Day (1897-1980)—the iconic, celebrated, and controver-sial Catholic whom Pope Francis called a “great Ameri-can” before Congress in 2015. Her cause for canoniza-tion is in process.

Day’s life has been revealed through her own writings as well as the work of historians, theologians, and aca-demics. What has been missing until now is a more per-sonal account from the point of view of someone who knew her well.

The memoir is a frank and reflective, heartfelt and hu-morous portrayal of a matriarch with a close but compli-cated relationship with her daughter and only child, Tamar Hennessy, as well as her nine grandchildren. Hennessy said her book is more than the story of Doro-thy Day.

“It’s also the story of my mother, Tamar, Dorothy’s only child,” said Hennessy. “It came out of the period after my mother’s death in 2008, when I realized that if my mother’s story wasn’t told, a very essential element of my grandmother’s story would remain untold.”

Information: Kay Williams, 650-270-4188, [email protected]

Parking is available adjacent to the Arrillaga Family Rec-reation Center. A limited number of copies of Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty will be avail-able for purchase. Kate will do a book-signing. Copies are also readily available from online bookstores. Admission: Free. Reserva-tions not required. Donations gratefully accepted.

Christ's peace,

Mrs. Joan Schenck, DRE

Anointing of the Sick When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given,

the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no

physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the HolySpirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the

difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. If you or someone you know is in need of a

priest for an Anointing of the Sick, please call Sue at 408-879-1130. If it is an immediate emergency (in danger of death) please call 408-912-0440 to be connected with Fr.

Gabriel or Fr. Michael.
