How Medicare Covers DiabetesDear Savvy Senior,What does Medicare cover when it comes to dia-
betes? I’m 65 and have pre-diabetes, and would like tofind out what all is covered.
Fat AlbertDear Albert,Medicare actually offers a wide range of coverage to
help beneficiaries who have diabetes, as well as those whoare at risk of getting it – but they don’t cover everything. Here’s a breakdown of what Medicare covers when itcomes to diabetes services and supplies along with someother tips that can help you save.
• Doctor’s services: If you’re a Medicare beneficiary,Medicare Part B will pay 80 percent of the cost of all doc-tor’s office visits that are related to diabetes. You areresponsible for paying the remaining 20 percent afteryou’ve met your annual 2013 $147 Part B deductible.
• Screenings: If you don’t currently have diabetes, butyou do have pre-diabetes or some other health conditionsthat put you at risk of getting it – such as high blood pres-sure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, are overweight, orhave a family history of diabetes – Medicare will pay 100percent of the cost of up to two diabetes screenings everyyear.
• Education: If you have diabetes, Medicare covers 80percent of the cost of self-management training (after youmeet your Part B deductible) to teach you how to success-fully manage your diabetes.
• Supplies and medications: Eighty percent of the costof glucose monitors, test strips and lancets (100 per monthif you use insulin, or 33 per month if you don’t), glucosecontrol solutions and insulin (if you use an insulin pump) arecovered by Medicare Part B, after you’ve met yourdeductible.
If, however, you inject insulin with a syringe, Medicare’sPart D prescription drug benefit may help pay your insulincosts and the supplies needed to inject it – if you have aplan. Part D plans also cover most other diabetic medica-tions too. You’ll need to check your plan for details.
• Nutrition: Medicare will pick up the entire tab for med-ical nutrition therapy, which teaches you how to adjust yourdiet so you can better manage your condition. You’ll need adoctor’s referral to get this service.
• Blood sugar tests: Also known as a hemoglobin A1ctest, this checks your average blood sugar level over thepast three months to determine how well your diabetes isbeing controlled. Medicare covers this test when your doc-tor orders it.
• Foot exams: Since foot problems are common amongpeople with diabetes, Medicare also covers 80 percent offoot care every six months for diabetics with diabetes-relat-ed nerve damage, and therapeutic shoes for people withsevere diabetic foot disease. Orthopedic shoes are notcovered.
• Eye exams: Because eye diseases like diabeticretinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts are more common indiabetics, 80 percent of dilated eye exams are coveredeach year, but eye exams for glasses are not.
For more information, call Medicare at 800-633-4227and ask them to mail you a free copy of the “Medicare’sCoverage of Diabetes Supplies & Services” booklet (publi-cation 11022), or see medicare.gov/pubs/pdf/11022.pdf.
Other InsuranceIf you have a Medigap (Medicare supplemental insur-
ance) policy, it may pay some of the costs that Medicaredoesn’t cover. Call your plan’s benefits administrator formore information.
Or, if you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan (like an HMOor PPO), your plan must give you at least the same dia-betes coverage as original Medicare does, but it may havedifferent rules. You’ll need to check your policy for details.
Financial AssistanceIf you’re income is low, and you can’t afford your
Medicare out-of-pocket costs, you may be able to get helpthrough Medicare Savings Programs. Call your localMedicaid office for eligibility information.
Also, find out if you are eligible for “Extra Help” whichhelps Medicare Part D beneficiaries with their medicationexpenses. Visit www.ssa.gov/prescriptionhelp or call SocialSecurity (800-772-1213) to learn more.

Anytime Fitness releases third annual ‘Weight of the Union’ reportBad News: Obesity Stunts Economic Growth, Threatens National SecurityGood News: Incentivizing Fitness Leads to Surge in Gym Visits
The United States isthe wealthiest nation onearth, but devotes agreater percentage ofits GDP to health care
than any other country, according to a report released byAnytime Fitness. In fact, $147 billion a year is spent in directmedical costs related to obesity. If that money were to bereallocated, America could invest in five hundred thousandnewly built homes, 1.6 million full college scholarships, or 35billion healthy meals.
The economic impact of obesity extends beyond risinghealth care costs to include $153 billion per year in lost pro-ductivity to companies, and $1 billion per year in medicalcare for active duty members.
These statistics are part of the third annual Anytime Fitness"Weight of the Union" report, which examines the macroimplications of obesity on the nation’s health, and providesrecommendations to curb the growing epidemic. AnytimeFitness is the world’s fastest-growing fitness franchise, withnearly 2,100 locations in more than a dozen countries.
“We’ve reached an unhealthy tipping point in America,”says CEO and co-founder of Anytime Fitness Chuck Runyon.“The report is a sobering reminder that the state of thenation’s health is still very weak, but there are meaningfulsteps we can take towards reclaiming our health – chiefamong them: increasing incentives to encourage and rewardphysical activity.”
In December, 2012, Runyon spearheaded a coalition ofMinnesota-based fitness clubs – “FitMN” – which proposed:
•Providing tax incentives for businesses to pay for fitnessclub memberships for their employees.
•Allowing individuals and families to use pre-tax dollarsfrom their Healthcare Spending Accounts (HSAs) or FlexibleSpending Accounts (FSAs) to pay for fitness club member-ships
•Allowing expenses an individual incurs for wellness ser-vices, in the form of dues, fees or membership expenses (upto $500 per individual or $1,000 per family annually) to besubtracted from the individual’s adjusted gross income.
Money really does influence behavior. An internal AnytimeFitness case study concluded that from October 2011-October2012, members in MN and WI who were reimbursed $20 permonth as a reward for visiting the gym 12 or more times permonth, exercised four times as often compared to memberswho did not receive $20. Members who received $20 reim-bursements averaged 12.4 workouts per month, whereas, members who were not reimbursement averaged 3.1 work-outs per month.
In 2012, Anytime Fitness members saved nearly $5 millionin reimbursements from their benefits providers, a 25%increase compared to the previous year.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, bro-ken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, col-umn and box. Each number can appear only oncein each row, column and box. You can figure outthe order in which the numbers will appear byusing the numeric clues already provided in theboxes. The more numbers you name, the easier itgets to solve the puzzle!

Hot Air BallooningLike driving a car with no brakes or steering wheel!
Russ Lucas bounced the hot air balloon over a lightpost in front the of the K-M Middle School New Year'sday. The basket dragged along the ground a short dis-tance until the crew on the ground could get into posi-tion with the ropes. It was the perfect landing.
Russ Lucas of Dodge Center owns Claremont CloudDancers, a business that gives hot air balloon rides. Russdoes some substitute teaching at Triton, but other thanthat, says, "I don't have a real job. His significant other,Kay Fate, is vice president, the real boss and champagnechiller.
Russ Lucas says he has been adventuresome sincebirth. He first started flying airplanes, dropped skydivers and even sky dived out of a hot air balloon. Hetook to hot air balloons some seven years ago. "Any dayI can fly in a hot air balloon is a good day," said Russ.
What does Russ Lucas like most about hot air bal-loons? "I like the challenge of flying them. Imagine dri-ving a car with no brakes or steering wheel," said Lucas.
The balloon lifts off when winds are not more thansix miles per hour. The 5,000 pound balloon is 90,000cubic feet and measures nearly 10 stories from theground. At 4,200 feet the balloon will travel at approxi-mately 15 miles an hour. With no brakes and no steeringwheel the balloon is controlled by ascending anddescending and calculating the wind at the different lev-els.
Common questions asked are, "What are we going tosee?" and "When is the best time to fly?
"Ever seen the top of a tree?" said Russ to a customer. He might tickle the top of a tree with a basket or "touch"or drop down and "touch" the water in a stream. Thebest time to fly is one half hour before sunrise or twohours before sunset.
Last year Russ returned from a 10 month stint inCappadocia, Turkey where he piloted a 425,000 cubicfoot balloon that could take up to 24 passengers. Bycomparison, the balloon he has at home can take up tothree passengers and himself.
Cappadocia is a tourist area in the center of Turkeyand known as one of top areas in the world for hot airballooning. The area is known for its incredible land-scapes, geological formations, volcanic rock formationsand history. Russ said churches and houses carved intothe rocks can only be seen as the balloon climbs to 1,000feet.
On New Year's Day temps dipped to a season low 12below. That did not deter Russ and another guest fromtaking to the skies just before sunrise. As the hot air bal-
loon traveled west they dipped down and came within100 yards of Russ' home’s rooftop. The flight ended atthe west end of Kasson. Russ looked at several landingoptions before deciding to drop down in front of themiddle school. New Year's day was a good one for RussLucas. He was able to fly.
If a hot air balloon ride is on your bucket list contactthe Claremont Cloud Dancers at (507)351-7001 or go totheir web site at: www.ccdballoonco.com.
New Year's Day brought a clear sky, belowzero temps and the perfect opportunity forRuss Lucas to go for a hot air balloon ride.
RussLucas

Set up and tear down requires a crew. New Year's Day Russ Lucas, president of theClaremont Cloud Dancers Balloon Co., took an early a.m. flight from Owatonna andlanded in front of the K-M Middle School. At the left is crew member Billie Cowell andat the right, pilot Russ Lucas.
A flight for a customer will last one hour, but plan onthree to three-and-a-half hours for pre-flight prepara-tions, taking down the balloon after flight and returntransportation.

Danny Linbo, Linbo Agency; good working relationship with Vernon Edda Mutual Fire Insurance Company
Danny Linbo of Sargeant,MN started to sell crop insur-ance with his brother Kevinin 1985. He sold crop/hailinsurance along with fire, wind liability. He partnerswith the Vernon Edda MutualFire Insurance Company towrite the fire coverages offarm policies. He packagesthe policies through theVernon Edda Company withthe North Star MutualInsurance Company andGrinnell Mutual ReinsuranceCompany.
Danny runs the businessout of his home and is work-
ing his way into full retirement. Son Kirkstarted with the company this year. "I liketo get out and see the people," said Dannywho considers himself more of a publicrelations person than salesman. Thefire/wind insurance policy customersrenew every three years, but renewingwith the crop farmers is an annual ritual.
Danny owned a grocery store in
Sargeant and sold out in 1994 because hecould see the handwriting on the wall forthe small town grocery business. Hecalled it a good move on his part at thattime.
As a semi-retired insurance agentDanny has always worked out of hishouse and his son does the same. Dannyserved as the secretary/manager of VernonEdda from 1994-2010 and is a boardmember. "The company goes back a longway," laughed Danny. "In that day youhad to be Norwegian and able to speak itto get a policy."
For some that might be hard tobelieve, but it's true. The Vernon Eddaroots can be traced back to the late 1800's.April 1, 1874 the company was createdand is one of the oldest of the 95 farmmutual insurance companies in the stateof Minnesota.
As settlers moved into the VernonTownship area they sought protectionfrom the ravages of fire. Working togeth-er was necessary for survival so spreadingout the losses among the settlers grew inpopularity and the Vernon Edda Mutual
Fire Insurance Company was formed. Vernoncomes from the township and Edda means 'pow-erful'.
The first records and policies were written inNorwegian and policy holders had to be ofNorwegian descent. Of the 234 policy holderstoday a good percentage of them are ofNorwegian descent, but that is not a requirement.
The Vernon Township area is where the firstpolicies were written. They have grown to servethe counties of Dodge, Mower, Olmsted,Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Steele, Wasecaand Winona. According to company managerMichelle Vigeland there are currently four agen-cies within those counties that are authorized towrite policies with Vernon Edda. They are:Bryon Wolf, Claremont Agency, Claremont(507-528-2179) and Jay Klemmensen,Claremont Agency, Claremont (507-528-2179),Danny Linbo, Linbo Agency, Sargeant (507-584-6881) and Kirk Linbo, Linbo Agency, Sargeant(507-259-4097), Dave Jorstad, Safeway Agency,Hayfield (507-477-3242), Joe Waugh, SafewayAgency, Mantorville (507-635-5949) and BrianNystuen, C.O. Brown Agency, Kasson (507-634-7264).
Vernon Edda is licensed to write the fire perilportion of farm policies, which is a majority oftheir clients. They also write homeowner policiesand partner with North Star Mutual InsuranceCompany and Grinnell Mutual ReinsuranceCompany to provide additional coverage forwind, hail, liability and inland marine.
According to Vernon Edda company manag-er Michelle Vigeland, what makes Vernon Eddaattractive is the fact that they are local and easi-ly accessible to customers in a time of need. "Wehave a strong commitment to provide excellentcustomer service by providing adequate cover-age, competitive rates and strong investments fora strong financial base," added Michelle.
The fact that Vernon Edda Mutual FireInsurance Company has been around 138 yearssays something about the stability of the compa-ny. Danny Linbo has sat on both sides of fence asdirector/manager and agent knows what makesVernon Edda a successful company for so manyyears. "The agency and customers have beengood to me," added Danny.
