Karen Fast, along with herhusband Rodney, is theowner of the business Mopsand Buckets. Karen's motiva-tion comes from her strongdesire to help others. Sheespecially likes to be of assis-tance to elderly and disabledpeople. Her business, Mopsand Buckets, allows her to dojust that.

Karen grew up in fosterhomes and spent lots of timecleaning. Lucky for her, sheenjoyed it. As an adult sheheld many different jobs;

waitress, bartender, food quality technician, bankaccount specialist to name a few. After losing herfirst husband, she met Rod, and he asked her whatshe liked to do. She replied that she had alwaysliked to clean. He asked her if she would considerstarting a cleaning business. With a shrug of hershoulders, she replied that it might be worth a try.The couple took time to pray about their possibleventure. Continuing their conversation one dayeach one wrote what they thought would be agood name for the business on a slip of paper.Turning them over they discovered they had bothwritten "Mops and Buckets". Taking that as a goodsign, two and one half years ago they decided toproceed.

Mops and Buckets provides cleaning servicesplus. Karen not only cleans for clients, she cooksand does laundry as well. "I really like to help peo-ple. If I can do something to help them, especiallyif they are elderly or disabled, that is important tome", she shares. She also likes to help young fami-lies to be able to come home to a clean house and

have more time to spend together as a familyrather than being burdened with householdchores. "I just love to do what I can to help people",Karen shares.

Mops and Buckets can provide weekly cleaningor one time services. They are available for resi-dential as well as commercial cleaning jobs. Theywill also do attic, basement and garage cleaning."We help people organize and clean these areaswhether they are moving or selling a propertysuch as an estate that needs to be cleaned upbefore being listed for sale", Karen continues. They will also do construction clean-up and occa-sionally a yard. "We don't do too many of those",smiled Karen. They will also do windows or justspecific requests, like only bathrooms. "We do avariety of job requests. Pretty much whatever thecustomer wants", said Karen. "For some we washwalls and ceilings-whatever needs to be done".

Currently Mops and Buckets has five employeesplus one on standby for those times when there isextra work. "We may be picking up two more busi-nesses. If that happens we will need to hire morepeople", says Karen when asked what goals theyhave for the business. "It is our goal to grow andhiring more employees shows we are meeting thatgoal", she explained.

In a short period of time Mops and Buckets hasbeen busy adding customers and doing whateveris necessary to help the business grow and be suc-cessful. They provide free estimates and strive todo what the customer requests. To contact Mopsand Buckets call 634-6700. They may also beemailed at [email protected] and canbe found on Facebook. LuAnn Buechler's professional life is akin toputting a lightning bolt in a box. She is energetic, inspiring and driven by a desire to help businessesand individuals discover what fuels them.

Accomplishing this requires the dynamic blendof LuAnn's unique experiences, education andbackground. As a Certified Meeting Professional(CMP) she brings over 25 years of experience in thehospitality industry to her own business, PMCEvents and Travel. Not only can she do the plan-ning; she can do the speaking and training. She isa certified facilitator of "The Passion Test". Thisprovides her the opportunity to help businessesand individuals discover their passions and makedecisions that lead to living a life filled with mean-ing, purpose and success. "There's a reason whypeople are where they're at. When they identifythe reasons for why they are doing what they do, itprovides focus and strengthens the business aswell as the individual", LuAnn states. She believesthe working climate changes when employeesunderstand how a person's passions match upwith a company's mission and goals creating suc-cess for both. This in turn is LuAnn's passion; help-ing people live a more joyful life. "I guarantee ThePassion Test will change your life", says LuAnn.

"Caring is the competitive edge", LuAnn contin-ues. This attitude of caring has translated into anew level of customer satisfaction. As co-author ofthe book Exceptional Care forYour Valued Clients she relateshow customer service is nolonger the correct wording forthe way businesses need to carefor their most valued assets, their clients."Caring for yourcustomers is the ultimate com-petitive advantage", LuAnnstates with certainty. To suc-ceed businesses need to payattention to this.

LuAnn also serves as a BNI(Business Network Intern-ational) Director. This positionhas allowed her to create awealth of presentations cover-ing topics from networkingskills to relationship marketing. She is also a member of theTransformational LeadershipCouncil working team. Createdby Jack Canfield of the wellknown Chicken Soup for theSoul book series, this organiza-tion brings transformationalleaders together to share bestpractices and co-create human-itarian projects.

LuAnn is eager to share hercurrent focus, R.E.N.E.W., aWomen's Retreat. RENEW(Rediscovering/ Educating/Networking/ and Empowering/Women, has been designed toprovide the perfect combina-

tion of support, guidance, and skills to assistwomen in creating the vibrant, meaningful, joyfullife they deserve. This special journey of self dis-covery, personal growth, education and relation-ship building promises to replenish and restoreindividual women's spirits and souls. "Women giveso much as employees, business owners, partners, parents, daughters, the list goes on. This is anopportunity for them to find out how to achievejoy in their own lives", LuAnn relates. This eventwill be held November 9-10th at Miracle Lodge atIronwood Christian Springs Ranch, Stewartville.(www.RenewWomensRetreat.com)

LuAnn holds a masters degree in HospitalityAdministration from the University of Wisconsin-Stout as well as a undergraduate degree in Hoteland Restaurant Management, also from Stout. "Myfather was a teacher and growing up I alwaysthought I would also be a teacher. My father how-ever encouraged me to do something else and lifecircumstances lead me to the Hospitality Industry. But in actuality when I am presenting and speak-ing I am teaching. I am motivated by those “lightbulb” moments when members of the audienceare encouraged, enlightened and informed by mypresentation. In the end, I am a teacher", LuAnnsays with satisfaction.

NAME: Janice PattersonBUSINESS: Expressions Hair Studio and TanningTITLE/POSITION: Owner/stylist/managerHOMETOWN: MantorvilleFAMILY: Husband John, together we have three children

and three grandchildren.COLLEGE/EDUCATION/TRAINING: One and a half years of accounting,

cosmetology school, education classes at IBM.ORGANIZATIONS/VOLUNTEER INVOLVEMENT: Kasson Chamber of Commerce,

support and donate to activities such as the Easter Egg Hunt, participate inthe Dodge County Business Expo.

LENGTH OF TIME IN BUSINESS: Five years at Expressions, two additional years as a stylist.

WHAT YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK: I like the people and surprisingly I like to do perms; many stylists do not.

A TYPICAL DAY CONSISTS OF: Most of my days are long, I am here from open to close six days a week. My mornings start with trying to get caught up with paperwork in the office and then I will have clients throughout the day. I like to take time to order and research product inventory, but I do not always get to it.

YOUR MOST DESPISED CHORE: Dealing with the challenges of managing a business.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? My desire to make the business more successful. We have a perfect location and a nice size with great potential to grow.

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Owning this business and the building along with my Avon business.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? Irene Stussy Felker. Ever since I was a little girl she inspired me and as an adult I returned to school to become a stylist.

HOBBIES: When I had time I liked to crochet, knit and sew. I did recently make a jean quilt for my grandson. Sometimes after a long day I like to come home and watch programs I have recorded. It takes my mind off all I need to do.

FAVORITE COLOR: PurpleFAVORITE FOOD: ChocolateBEST VACATION: When John and I went to the North Shore. We had reservations

for two nights otherwise we had no definite plans. It was very relaxing.AS A CHILD WHAT DID YOU WANT TO GROW UP TO BE? A hair stylist.HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED? As being an honest person.

Minnesota department of natural resources

Minnesota's pheasant index up 68 percent from 2011

A mild winter followed by a warm spring contributed to asignificant increase in Minnesota's pheasant count, accordingto the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The pheasant population index increased 68 percent from2011. Pheasant hunters are expected to harvest about290,000 roosters this fall. That's up from last year's estimatedharvest of 204,000 but roughly half the number taken duringthe 2005-2008 seasons when hunting was exceptionallygood.

"While the 2012 increase reflects movement in a positivedirection, the counts still remain 51 percent below the 10-year average," said Kurt Haroldson, the DNR biologist whocompiled the survey.

While favorable weather worked in the birds' favor thisyear, their long-term success is more closely linked to habitatthan annual variations in snowfall, rainfall and temperature.

"The state's pheasant population is linked more closely toquantity and quality of habitat than annual differences inweather," Haroldson said.

The pheasant population estimate is part of the DNR'sannual roadside wildlife survey. The survey summarizesroadside counts of pheasants, gray (Hungarian) partridge, cottontail rabbits, white-tailed jackrabbits and other wildlifeobserved in the early morning hours during the first half ofAugust throughout the farmland region of Minnesota.

The highest pheasant counts were in the west centralregion, where observers reported 58 birds per 100 miles ofsurvey driven. Hunters will find good harvest opportunitiesin portions of west central, east central and southwestMinnesota.

The most important habitat for pheasants is grassland thatremains undisturbed during the nesting season. Protectedgrasslands account for about 6 percent of the state's pheasantrange. Farmland retirement programs such as Conservation

Reserve Enhancement Program (CRP), Reinvest inMinnesota and Wetlands Reserve Program make up thelargest portion of protected grasslands in the state.

High land rental rates and competing uses for farmlanddiminish the economic attractiveness of farmland conserva-tion programs. During the next three years, contracts for620,000 acres of CRP lands are scheduled to expire. If notre-enrolled, this would reduce CRP acres in Minnesota by 42percent.

Minnesota's pheasant population largely has mirroredwhat's happened on the land.

"Pheasant numbers were higher during the small, diversi-fied farming days from roughly 1931 to 1964 when habitatwas more abundant," Haroldson said. "Pheasant numbersdeclined during the intensive farming boom from 1965-1986as field sizes grew and habitat shrank. Then, pheasant num-bers rebounded when CRP began in 1987. However, enroll-ment in that program peaked several years ago, and furtherdeclines will not bode well for future pheasant populations."

To help offset continued habitat losses caused by reduc-tions in conservation set-aside acreage, DNR has acceleratedacquisition of wildlife management areas in the farmlandregion of Minnesota. DNR also supports habitat conserva-tion on private lands by working with a variety of partners inthe Farm Bill Assistance Partnership and Working LandsInitiative. More than 15,000 acres of private property havebeen opened to public hunting through the state's Walk-InAccess program.

The August roadside survey, which began in the late1940s, was standardized in 1955. DNR conservation officersand wildlife managers in the farmland region of Minnesotaconduct the survey during the first half of August. Thisyear's survey consisted of 171 routes, each 25 miles long, with 152 routes located in the ring-necked pheasant range.

Observers drive each route in early morning and recordthe number and species of wildlife they see. The data pro-vide an index of relative abundance and are used to monitorannual changes and long term trends in populations of ring-necked pheasants, gray partridge, eastern cottontail rabbits, white tailed jackrabbits and other select wildlife species.

The gray partridge index also increased from last year andis similar to the 10-year average. The cottontail rabbit indexremains below the 10-year and long-term average. Thejackrabbit index was 96 percent below the long-term aver-age. Finally, the mourning dove index was 36 percent abovelast year but similar to the 10-year average.

MDA hounds emerald ash borerwith detection dogsDetection dogs complete summer of training to find EAB and ash logs

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) haspartnered with Working Dogs for Conservation to train dogsin sniffing out EAB infested wood and ash tree material. Thegoal is to deploy the dogs to help regulatory crews find infest-ed wood and other materials that may be harboring thedestructive tree pest.

Four detection dogs began learning the scents of EABinfested wood and ash trees in Minnesota last April, and arefinishing their third and final phase of training. The finalphase includes comprehensive searches for EAB infestedwood in firewood piles, yard waste sites, and commercialvehicles. The dogs have already been trained to recognize ashtree and EAB scents in isolated containers, and target scentswhile camouflaged with other scents in a controlled setting.

This is the first time anyone in the nation has partnered totest the ability of a dog to detect EAB. Working Dogs forConservation hopes to build upon what has been learned dur-ing the research phase to make EAB detection dogs availablefor hire by other states and regulating agencies. The U.S.Department of Agriculture’s Animal Plant Health InspectionService is also using dogs to detect Asian longhorned beetle, another invasive beetle that has infested trees in some Easternstates.

“We launched this idea as a pilot program,” said MDAPlant Protection Director Geir Friisoe. “We were hopeful, butdid not know if the dogs could pick up on ash tree and EABscents. The fact that the dogs can detect not only infestedwood but specifically ash wood has exceeded our expecta-tions.”

Working Dogs for Conservation is a non-profit organiza-tion that specializes in helping eradicate damaging invasivespecies while ensuring rich and rewarding lives of canines.

EAB is one of America’s most destructive tree pests. Itslarvae kill ash trees by tunneling into the wood and feeding onthe tree’s nutrients. The metallic-green adult beetles are ahalf-inch long, and are active from May to September. Thebiggest risk of spreading EAB comes from people unknow-ingly moving firewood or other ash products harboring lar-vae.

An interactive map of confirmed EAB infestations inMinnesota is available on the Minnesota Department ofAgriculture’s website at www.mda.state.mn.us/eab.

Business and local government members of the U.S.Highway 14 Partnership strongly advocated for the four-laneexpansion of Highway 14 at a Mankato meeting seeking pub-lic input on Minnesota’s highway investments. TheMinnesota Department of Transportation is in the process ofdeveloping its 20-year Minnesota Statewide HighwayInvestment Plan (MnSHIP) which will outline the state’sspending for the next two decades; and is hosting a series ofstakeholder meetings throughout the state to hearMinnesotans’ transportation priorities.

“If Highway 14 isn’t included in the 20-year plan, it’s adeathblow to our businesses and the safety of our residents,”said Les Abraham, President of the U.S. Highway 14Partnership and Owatonna City Councilor. “We urge ourarea’s citizens to join in contacting MnDOT to let them knowthat fixing this highway is a priority and needs to be listed inthe plan.”

Partnership members stressed both the safety and econom-ic need for completing the four-lane expansion of the twounfinished segments of Highway 14: North Mankato to NewUlm and Dodge Center to Owatonna. Since 2001, there havebeen 43 fatalities and 47 serious injuries on Highway 14between New Ulm and Rochester. Both segments of unfin-ished highway have fatality rates above the statewide averageof 0.8; with a rate of 2.2 from North Mankato to New Ulmand 1.5 from Dodge Center to Owatonna.

“Highway 14 is a dangerous road that needs to beimproved now. How many more people must needlessly losetheir lives for the state to realize this? If Highway 14 is not inthe 20-year statewide plan, it signals that decades of promis-es and prior investments in this highway have been for not,”said Drew Campbell, Blue Earth County Commissioner.

The Partnership also noted that a four-lane expansion isnecessary to meet the region’s population growth. Trafficprojections show that average daily traffic along Highway 14will increase by 60-80% by 2025 between North Mankato andNew Ulm and more than double between Owatonna andDodge Center by 2030.

“By ignoring the needs on Highway 14, Minnesota is notonly losing lives, but economic opportunities,” noted RondaAllis, Director of Community Development at the Region 9Development Commission. “The heavy truck traffic and dif-ficult intersections along Highway 14 make it hard to attractbusinesses to our corridor, as they know this road will be animpediment to moving their goods and providing their ser-vices. This highway no longer meets the needs of our grow-ing communities and economies and is holding our develop-ment back.”

Final environmental impact statements (EIS) were pre-pared for the two segments of Highway 14 in 2010 (DodgeCenter to Owatonna) and 2011 (North Mankato to New Ulm).If no work occurs on the projects within three years, MnDOTwould have to reevaluate the environmental impacts of theroadwork, causing further delay and cost increases to the pro-jects.

“The clock is ticking on these environmental impact state-ments. Why allow these documents to grow dormant andincrease the taxpayer cost of finishing Highway 14?” ques-tioned Abraham. “We’ve wasted enough time-let’s get towork fixing it now.”

The U.S. Highway 14 Partnership also plans to attendMnDOT’s stakeholder engagement meeting in Rochester onOctober 17 and continue its advocacy for the completion ofHighway 14 and the projects’ inclusion in the 20-year plan.
