Cameron Baker - Brian LentzThey enjoy being involved with youth!Cameron Baker graduated from Byron

High School in 2006 and Brian Lentz gradu-ated from K-M high School in 2008. Bothwere involved in youth group at the Commu-nity Celebration Church of Kasson as teens.Today they are still involved with the thechurch, in a little different capacity as youthleaders.

Cameron is a youth pastor at CommunityCelebration Church and Brian is a ministryassistant. As Cameron expressed, "I guessyou could say we are living the dream."

Both took very different paths to wherethey are today. Cameron was focused onbeing a youth pastor since attending a youthcamp at age 14. Brian attended post-sec-ondary schooling with the intent of being adiesel mechanic.

Cameron attended North Central Univer-sity, a Bible college in Chicago, and earneda four year degree to become a youth pastor.Brian attended Universal Technical Instituteand took an 18 month program to become adiesel mechanic. After working in the field

for about a year Brian did not feel thatwas,as he put it, "his place". He was stillinvolved in the church and believed that washis calling.

As youth pastor Cameron has a strongconviction for what he does. "It's about see-ing life changes in kids-things that buildtheir life. Kids can be very inspiring," saidCameron.

As a ministry assistant Brian said he willbe taking over a new youth group designedfor fifth and sixth graders. He views that asan opportunity to impact young lives foreternity.

Cameron and Brian say lead pastor SteveLarson has been a solid figure for them tolook up to and has provided them with gooddirection. "Pastor Steve invited me to youthgroup and I was hooked," said Brian.Cameron, who said he grew up in a verysolid spiritual home, can envision himself asa 65 your old youth pastor. "Living thedream," he reiterated.

Cameron Baker and Brian Lentz are part of a youth movement at Community Cele-bration Church in Kasson.

Casey is a 10 year oldfemale Cairn Terrier mixwho weighs about 20pounds. She is housetrained, and very good atletting you know she needsoutside. Casey is okay withcats and other small dogs, but tends to be bossy. Shegets along fine with theresident greyhound.

Casey likes to sleep inbed with you and is quite a cuddle bug, butshe is also content to curl up on a dog bed ifyou don't like your pets in bed with you. Sheis a smart girl, she "speaks" for a treat and

she also spins with excitement at dinner time! Casey has a good appetite, and finishes her food in one sitting; she also

takes a treat gently from your hand. She tends to pull when on a leashwhen out walking, so a harness is highly recommended. She's also not afan of having her paws touched.

Casey is quite a watch dog and barks at people outside and, until intro-duced correctly, she can be protective when someone comes to the door. She is also protective if you are in the car and someone pulls up alongside.

Casey is spayed and had a much needed dental with nine teethremoved. She is up to date with shots and is heartworm and intestinal par-asite free. It's Fire Prevention Week! By Fire Chiefs: Joe Fitch – Kasson Fire Dept. & JJ Williams – Mantorville Fire Dept.

It’s 3 a.m. You and your family are sound asleep and awake to the beep-ing smoke alarm. You are tired and confused from the effects of the smoke. You know you need to get to safety, but when you head for the front door, you find that escape route is blocked by fire that is spreading by the second. What do you do?

While this scenario is one we hope you never have to encounter, the sta-tistics tell us that many people do every day. According to the nonprofitNational Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one home structure fire wasreported every 85 seconds in 2010. That added up to 369,500 home struc-ture fires, which caused 13,350 injuries and 2,640 deaths. Most fatal fireskill one or two people. However, in 2010, 19 home fires killed five or morepeople, resulting in 101 deaths.

The numbers are scary, but there is something you can do to help ensureyour family’s safety should a fire break out in your home: Have Two WaysOut!

Kasson and Mantorville Fire Departments are each teaming up withNFPA during Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, 2012, to urge residentsof their communities and fire districts to “Have Two Ways Out!” Thisyear’s theme focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and prac-tice.

Only one-third of Americans have both developed and practiced a homefire escape plan. And of the three-quarters of Americans who do have anescape plan, less than half actually practiced it. As we saw in the scenarioabove, fire is unpredictable. Seconds and minutes can mean the differencebetween life and death. We want to ensure that residents know what to doif a fire breaks out in their home. Preparation is an important part of beingable to deal with an emergency and it is crucial you take steps to prepareyour family for the potential of a home fire by having an escape plan andpracticing it.

Although preparing for the unexpected is difficult, reviewing this infor-mation and taking action based on it to plan for a fire could save lives.Kasson & Mantorville Fire Departments recommend the following tips forplanning your family’s escape:

If you have children, make this a family activity• Make a map of your home. Mark a door and a window that can be used

to get out of every room.• Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home. This is where

everyone can meet once they’ve escaped. Draw a picture of your outsidemeeting place on your escape plan.

• Write the emergency telephone number for the fire department on yourescape plan.

• Sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape drill with everyoneliving in your home.

• Keep your escape plan on the refrigerator and practice the drill twicea year or whenever anyone in your home celebrates a birthday.

If your family is all adults:• Walk through your home and identify two ways out of each room.• Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home. This is where

everyone can meet once they’ve escaped. • Make sure everyone knows the emergency number for your local fire

department.• Practice your escape drill twice a year.Kasson & Mantorville Fire Departments will be hosting Open Houses

during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Have Two Ways Out!” Throughthese educational, family-oriented events, residents can learn more aboutthe importance of fire escape planning and practice, as well as the power ofprevention.

Kasson Fire Department will be hosting their Open House onWednesday, October 10th from 6:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. All apparatus will beavailable for viewing, coloring contest winners will be on display, fire pre-vention and safety info will be available, and registration for door prizesavailable. Firefighters will be there to answer questions, and refreshmentswill be served.

Mantorville Fire Department will be hosting their Open House onWednesday, October 10th from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Mantorville FireHall. Information about fire safety and prevention will be available. Allapparatus will be on display for viewing and firefighters will be availableto answer any questions you may have. Batteries for smoke detectors willbe available, as well as pencils and fire hats for the kids. The City ofMantorville will be offering refreshments next door in the council cham-bers at this time also.

To learn more about this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme - “HaveTwo Ways Out!” visit NFPA’s Web site at www.firepreventionweek.org.

•Fire Prevention Week was establishedto commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killedmore than 250 people, left 100,000 home-less, destroyed more than 17,400 struc-tures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but contin-ued into and did most of its damage onOctober 9, 1871.

•While the Great Chicago Fire was thebest-known blaze to start during this fierytwo-day stretch, it wasn't the biggest. Thedistinction of largest blaze goes to thePeshtigo Fire, the most devastating forestfire in American history. The fire, whichalso occurred on October 8th, 1871, androared through Northeast Wisconsin, burning down 16 towns, killing 1,152 peo-ple, and scorching 1.2 million acres beforeit ended.

Kasson Fire Chief JoeFitch gave Just Like HomeSchool age Child Care chil-dren a tour of the fire hall.

Kasson firemen had a busy Saturday morning when a large garagecaught fire. At one point the black smoke from the fire could be seen formiles. They were able to contain the fire to the garage.

The Kasson Fire Department will onceagain be hosting an open house duringFire Prevention Week. The open house isWednesday, October 10 from 6:30-8 p.m.

The Fire Departments of Kasson &Mantorville urge residents of their respective communities and rural fire districts to take steps to prevent home fires

A fire at home can occur in just about any room of thehouse and even outdoors. While one can't account fornatural disasters or other unforseen problems, there aremany steps homeowners can take to prevent fires.

• Check the cords on all appliances and electronics.Replace any frayed or damaged cords or wires.

• Do not overload outlets or rely heavily on multi-plugpower strips.

• Keep cords out of the reach of children and pets.• When cooking in the kitchen, always be present

while food is on the stove or in the oven. Flare-ups canoccur at a moment's notice.

• Don't store items over the stove. They can fall andignite.

• Turn pot handles so that children can't reach themand pull them over, risking burns.

• Be sure appliance vents have room to "breathe."• Have the chimney checked and cleaned regularly.• Use a metal or glass fireplace screen to block

embers.• Limit the use of portable space heaters around the

home.• Use extreme caution with cigarettes and ashtrays.

Empty them frequently when signs of heat and burningare gone.

• Use light bulbs that are at the recommendedwattage for a fixture.

• Don't place any electrical items by water in thebathroom.

• Store flammable materials in a locked metal con-tainer in the basement or garage.

• Service the furnace and hot water heater on a regu-lar basis.

• Do not store items too close to the furnace.• Be sure every level of the home is equipped with

working smoke detectors.• Keep one or two fire extinguishers charged and at

the ready.

October marks the fifth anniversary ofMinnesota's smoke-free law, the Freedom toBreathe Act. The law was a major healthmilestone for Minnesota. Since October 1,2007 all bars, restaurants, bowling centersand other workplaces have been smoke-free.

The law was enacted with strong bi-parti-san support and went into effect on October1, 2007. "The Freedom to Breathe Act had apersonal impact on everyone, here in DodgeCounty and across the state," said RuthGreenslade, health educator with DodgeCounty Public Health and the Dodge CountyCoordinator for the Four Comers Partnership."It significantly decreased secondhand smokeexposure for all Minnesotans."

A study of hospitality workers that tookplace before and after the law took effectshowed that their exposure to cancer-causingchemicals found in secondhand smoke hadfallen by 85 percent and nicotine exposurewas reduced by 83 percent. Science alsoshows that smoke-free policies help reducesmoking, and since 2007 Minnesota's adultsmoking rate has declined to 16.1 percent.

"Minnesotans overwhelmingly support oursmoke-free law," said Greenslade. Kasson-Mantorville SADD students showed theirsupport by signing a birthday card and saying"Happy birthday, Freedom to Breathe!" in avideo posted on the Four Corners Facebookpage this week. The video can be viewed athttp://www.facebook.com/ Daaes/Four-Corners-PartnershiD/.

The Four Corners facebook page alsoexplains the official rules for the FourCorners Partnership Freedom to Breathebirthday photo contest. Residents of Dodge

County are eligible to post a photo and com-pete against entrants from Goodhue, Rice, and Steele counties for the most "likes." Therules and prizes are listed on the Facebookpage. Anyone who supports the law is invitedto participate.

A 2011 poll conducted by DecisionResources LTD found that 79 percent ofMinnesotans support the law and that 86 per-cent of Minnesotans believe smoke-freerestaurants and bars are healthier for cus-tomers and employees.

The Freedom to Breathe Act was a verypositive step, but unfortunately smokingremains a leading cause of death and disease.Smoking costs the lives of more than 5,100Minnesotans per year and nearly $3 billioneach year in excess health care costs.

The tobacco industry spends $157 millionper year in Minnesota on marketing to attractnew smokers. Most of this money is spent onadvertising and promotions in stores that selltobacco."Studies show that tobacco market-ing in retail stores is a major cause of youthsmoking," Greenslade said. "The FourCorners Partnership is working to increasepublic awareness about the relationshipbetween tobacco advertising and youth smok-ing."

The Four Corners Partnership educates thepublic and elected officials in Dodge,Goodhue, Rice and Steele counties about theharm tobacco causes. The Partnership advo-cates for proven, evidence-based policies thatwill reduce tobacco use and exposure to sec-ondhand smoke, and prevent youth fromstarting to smoke.
