You ask the Senior questionWe find the Savvy answer

Simplified Smartphones forBoomers and Seniors

Dear Savvy Senior,Are there any smartphones specifically designed for

seniors that you know of? I’m interested in getting one,but at age 69, I want to find one that’s easy to see anduse.

Semi-Smart SeniorDear Semi-Smart,There are actually several manufacturers who are now

making simplified smartphones with features designed pri-marily for older users who have limited experience withmodern gadgetry. Here’s a rundown of what’s currently andsoon-to-be available.

Pantech Flex: One of the best and most affordable age-friendly smartphones on the market today is the PantechFlex (see pantechusa.com/phones/flex), sold through AT&Tfor only $1 with a two-year contract.

This Android-powered touch screen phone has a bright4.3-inch screen, with a fast 1.5GHz dual-core processorand 8 megapixel camera. But what makes this phone idealfor seniors is its Easy Experience mode which provides asimple, clean home screen with large fonts, clearly markedicons, and quick access to the phone’s most essential fea-tures – your phone, camera, messages, menu, Web, con-tacts, along with shortcuts to your favorite apps.

It also offers convenient features like voice dialing andvoice commands, and SwiftKey technology that predict thenext word you want to type to make texting faster and eas-ier.

Individual monthly service plans for AT&T start at $30 for200 minutes of talk time (for customers 65 and older), $20for unlimited text messaging, and $20 for 300 MB of data.

Jitterbug Touch: Offered by GreatCall Wireless – thesame company that makes the Jitterbug big-button cellphone – the Touch is actually a Kyocera Milano smartphonethat’s been rebranded and loaded with GreatCall’s simpli-fied user interface software.

It offers a 3-inch touch screen, and a full slide-out key-board with raised, backlit buttons that makes it easier totype messages. And when you turn the phone on, you geta simple menu list with large fonts that let you accessoften-used features like the phone, camera, messages andpictures, along with your contacts and apps.

This Android phone also offers voice dialing, a 3.2megapixel camera, and optional features like medicationreminders, 5Star personal security service, a live nurse ser-vice to answer your health questions, and more.

Available at greatcall.com or 800-733-6632, the Touchsells for $149 with a one-time $35 activation fee, no-con-tract, and calling plans that cost $15 per month for 50 min-utes, up to $80 per month for unlimited minutes, text mes-sages, operator assistance, and voicemail. And their dataplans run between $2.50 per month for 10 MB up to$25/month for 500 MB.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: If a bigger screen is the mostdesired feature, the Samsung Galaxy Note II(samsung.com/galaxynoteII) has a huge 5.5-inch touchscreen display and can be used with a stylus, which makesit easy to see and maneuver. It also offers an Easy modefeature which simplifies the home screen providing accessonly to key functions like the phone, messaging, Internet, contacts and your favorite apps.

Available through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile andU.S. Cellular for $300 to $370 with a two-year contract, themonthly service plans for talk, text and data start at around$80.

Doro PhoneEasy 740: If you don’t mind waiting, theDoro PhoneEasy 740 (dorousa.us/experience) is anotherexcellent option, but it won’t be available in the U.S. untillater this year.

This Android slider phone has a 3.2-inch touch screenand a numerical slide-out keypad with raised buttons foreasy operation. It also offers a large-text, clearly labeledmenu to frequently used features like the phone, email, messages, Internet, photos, games and apps.

Expected to cost around $99, other age-friendly featuresinclude a 5 megapixel camera which can double as a mag-nifying glass, and an emergency call button that will dialand text five preprogrammed numbers when pressed.

GROWING UP ON A FARM PREPAREDGROWING UP ON A FARM PREPAREDTODD BEAVER FOR PLUMBING BUSINESS,TODD BEAVER FOR PLUMBING BUSINESS,BEAVER PLUMBINGBEAVER PLUMBING

Todd Beaver grew up on a farm east of Oslo and grad-uated from Hayfield High School in 1978. During thoseyears at home on the farm Todd learned the value ofwork and how to fix things. His ability to fix things ledto a career in plumbing and owning his own business,Beaver Plumbing of Hayfield.

Todd recalls working on the farm and with a grin says,"I was a jack of all trades and master of none". As a mid-west farm boy looking for employment in Denver, Toddhad no problem finding a job because the contractorknew the odds were pretty good he would be a goodworker. Denver is where Todd got his start in the plumb-ing trade.

Todd moved back to the Hayfield area and worked asa plumber until being laid off in the early '90s. In thiscase something good did come out of something unfor-tunate.

Instead of sitting around and taking advantage of theopportunity to collect unemployment, Todd decided tostart his own plumbing business. That was the start ofBeaver Plumbing 19 years ago.

Todd does work for new construction and remodeling, service and repair for air conditioning, sewer and draincleaning and water conditioning. When the economy

slowed along with the new construction market, Toddconcentrated more on service work and remodeling pro-jects. His motto has always been, "No job is too small"and he has always been a promoter of service. "I want todo a quality job and get return business. For that to hap-pen you have to please the customer." Todd insists thatword of mouth and repeat customers are the key to keep-ing a business in operation for 19 years.

"Some guys have a reputation for showing up late ornot showing up," said Todd. When he says he will showup at a certain time Todd will be there or will pick up thephone and let the customer know his status. "If I don'tshow up something serious has happened," said Todd.

January marked 19 years in business for Todd Beaver.Would he go into business again knowing where hewould be today? "I have no regrets and think I have beenfortunate in this business," said Todd.

Todd’s goal is to increase his business, but at the sametime not take on more than he can handle on his own.Being a one man business eliminates quality controlissues.

Todd is listed in the Dodge County IndependentBusiness Directory and is always available for free esti-mates. His number is (507)477-3141.

After being laid off as a plumber in the early '90sTodd Beaver could have collected unemployment, but opted to start his own business, BeaverPlumbing.

March is Women's History Month and the Friends ofthe Kasson Library's Books and Beyond monthly pro-gram would like to spotlight a very special story onMarch 11 at 7 p.m. in the Kasson Public Library.

This program tells the story and sacrifices of WWIIWomen's Air Force Pilots (WASP) during World War II andMinnesota's own Virginia Mae Hope (1921-1944) ofWinnebago, Minnesota.

WASPs flew planes and performed wartime duties in theUnited States, thus freeing male pilots for combat. Hope wasone of only 1,074 women to receive the WASP "silver wings."Participants will hear about her childhood during theDepression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the changing rolesof women and what life was like as a Women Airforce ServicePilot.

The Friends of the Kasson Library are proud to partnerwith the Minnesota Historical Society to tell this interestingchapter of women in the armed services during the SecondWorld War. A Minnesota History player will step forward intime to share her story of how an ordinary woman accom-plished the extraordinary.
