It’s Time for a Change

There is a saying, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”

• Longest state shutdown in Minnesota history• All three Wall Street rating agencies have downgraded our credit worthiness, citing continued poor decision making• Debt of $2.4 billion to public schools that belies talk of a "surplus”• Two divisive constitutional amendments

Vote for OneHouse of Rep. District 25A

Duane Quam (IR)1. Family, background and education

I grew up on a local farm, and graduated from Byron. My wife Pat and I have beenmarried 28 years, and have two sons, Duey and Jacob. I have degrees in Physicsand Engineering.2. Why I decided to seek office

We have made progress in reforming state government, and changing the cycle oflarge deficits. This work needs to continue, and I will continue working to returnMinnesota state government to being a servant of the people and a partner of localgovernment. This reforming state government will also make Minnesota a betterplace for job creation.3. Biggest ConcernsJobs, taxes, and uncertainty of what the future will bring them and their families.4. Comments

I chief authored 14 bills with Democrat co-authors. My first reformed government, and passed 184 to 6, and is now law. My bill to improve Emergency Medical

Services passed 186 to 0, and is now law. I helped to close a multi-billion dollar deficit, converting it to a surplus of1.5 billion dollars.

My awards and endorsements include:• Choice in Minnesota Health Care• Freedom Club• Minnesota Chamber of Commerce• Minnesota Dental PAC• Minnesota Farm Bureau• Minnesota Grocers Association Food PAC• Minnesota Medical PAC• National Federation of Independent Business

• Minnesota “Guardian of Small Business Award”• National Rifle Association

grade “A”• Republican Liberty Caucus, Minnesota Chapter • Legislative “Honoree”• Rochester Post-Bulletin• Taxpayer League of Minnesota

“Best Friend of the Taxpayer“

1. Family, background and educationMy name is John Vossen. I am one of ten children of Richard and Marie Vossen.

My father taught FFA for 29 years in Arlington, MN. My mother was a hardworking, stay at home mom. We moved to Hutchinson, MN when I was in fifth grade and Igraduated from Hutchinson High School in 1990. I went on to receive my AssociateArts Degree from Willmar Community College. I continued my education atMoorhead State University where I received my Bachelor of Science Degree inElementary Education.

In 1995 I began teaching 5th grade in Glencoe Silver Lake School District as part ofthe state's residency program. When my residency ended I accepted a position inthe Kasson-Mantorville School District. This year I will be finishing my 16th year atKasson-Mantorville, having taught both 3rd and 4th grades. In 2001 I earned myMaster of Science Degree in Education from Winona State University.

My wife, Jody, and I celebrated our 10th year of marriage in June. We have twowonderful children named Cory and Briana. Cory and his girlfriend, Mariana, are liv-

ing in Ocala, Florida. Cory is a funeral director and Mariana works for a department store. Briana is married to BrianKramer and they live in Northfield. Brian works with the Northfield Police Department. They have a beautiful daughternamed Hailey Rose who turned two this fall. 2. Why I decided to seek office

I am running for the Minnesota House of Representatives because I believe I can help the people of southeasternMinnesota by working collaboratively with my fellow legislators to move Minnesota forward. For the past two yearswe’ve seen more gridlock in the legislature than ever before. This resulted in the longest government shut down in our

state’s history. We desperately need legislators who aren’t afraid to think for themselvesinstead of always following party lines. 3. Biggest ConcernsAs an educator for 17 years, I know the barriers our students face. I’ll make the educa-

tion of our state’s youth my top priority. A quality education is the key to our state’s long-term economic competiveness and job growth. We need to prepare our students to suc-ceed not only locally but globally.

As your representative, I will also work to reform the tax system so that everyone partic-ipates fairly, while working at reducing the burden on property tax payers.

I have a vision of being your representative, one who will listen first, and speaksecond. I’d be honored to represent you and be your voice in St. Paul.

Together we will move Minnesota in a new direction.

4. Comments If I canexpect the best out of mystudents, I think you canexpect the best out of me asyour state representative.Together we can create jobs, grow our economy, and getMinnesota moving in theright direction. I believe thepeople running our stateshould be creating legisla-tion to make for a betterMinnesota, not fighting withone another to pass policythat does not benefit ourgreat state.

1. Family, background andeducation

I am married to a wonder-ful woman named Teresa. We have three lovely chil-dren, Bobbi (20), Bailey (17),and Zachary (15). We havelived in Canisteo Townshipfor the last 20 years.I was raised on a century

farm in rural Freeborn Countywith my first occupationbeing a farmer after graduat-ing from the University ofMinnesota - Waseca in 1979.In 1987 I decided to leavefarming and went to lawschool at William Mitchell

College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. Upon graduatingfrom law school, I began my law practice in DodgeCounty. I currently work for the U.S. Army Corps ofEngineers in the real estate section and also practice lawout of our home. In addition I am the Hayfield CityAttorney. I recently retired after serving 32 years in theMinnesota National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserveshaving attained the rank of Colonel and completing a touras a Brigade Commander. I am a veteran of "OperationIraqi Freedom" and was awarded the Bronze Star andLegion of Merit during my years of service. I have beenactive in many groups and organizations within DodgeCounty, including the Kasson/Mantorville Exchange Club,Hayfield American Legion, Mantorville VFW, FirstPresbyterian Church in Kasson and the Dodge CountyFair Board.2. Why I decided to seek office

I believe I have the passion, the experience, and theskills to serve the interests and needs of Dodge Countywell. I joined the military to serve this great country anddid so with pride and honor for 32 years. With my manyyears of service in the military I have traveled throughoutthe world. I have seen how many other cultures andcommunities live and thank God that I was born in theState of Minnesota, USA. America offers so many bene-fits that seem to be taken for granted. Dodge County ismy home, and I want to ensure Dodge County continuesto be a great place to live. Although retired from militaryservice, I am not retired from public service. I seek aposition on the Dodge County Board of Commissioners tobuild and provide the most robust and effective countyservices possible with utmost fiscal restraint. 3. In your opinion what specific needs does DodgeCounty haveAttention to fundamentals is essential toensure a healthy community. Thus, the County must (1)Focus on the economic, business health of the Countyand encourage good paying jobs that support families; (2)Maintain a professional and effective Sherriff’sDepartment, (3) Ensure that the county’s infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, are in good working orderand well maintained; and (4) Work with the school districtsto ensure that our children’s education is the best possi-ble. Our County Commissioners will have to be morepolitically involved at the Capitol. With redistricting,Dodge County has been carved into four Senate and fiveHouse districts. As a result, our legislative delegation rep-resents our neighboring counties as well, which on someissues may have different interests and agendas. Therefore, it will be on the shoulders of our CountyCommissioners to ensure that the State recognizes theneeds of Dodge County and is treated fairly. 4.Comments:If elected I will work hard for the people in my district.Hard work is what I know. I know farming, I know leader-ship, I know public service, and I know the law. Ihumbly ask Dodge County residents to elect me in thispursuit. I will assure you that all my decisions will be tostrengthen and support family and community and willuphold the laws of this state and country. I truly hope thevoters will accept me as their commissioner and mypledge is not to disappoint them.

Vote for OneJane Olive 1. Family, background and

educationJohn and I live in rural

Mantorville with two dogs, twocats, and a few chickens. I ama retired intensive care nurse. We have three children, Dan,Jim, and Liz and six grandchil-dren, who all live close by.What I love most about livingin Dodge County is how agri-cultural, rural residential andcity dwellers live and thrivetogether. Sure, there are someissues that need and deserveattention. And yet, there isway more for us to be proudof than not.

2. Why I decided to seek officeThese past two years as your county commissioner have

been an eye-opener. Going in I knew it was more than twoCounty Board meetings a month and roads and bridges. It'sthese things for sure, but there are local, regional, andstatewide decisions that impact on just about everything wedo in Dodge. For example, I am on the Dodge CountyHealth and Human Services committees and also on theAssociation of MN Counties (AMC) Health and HumanServices. Locally, I work with the directors of our depart-ments to ensure things are running smoothly, on budget, andstay current. On the state level, we develop platforms onHealth and Human Services to present to our governor andlegislators on topics that affect all of MN and lobby on theirbehalf. Those legislations impact on our local budget, ser-vices, and programs. SEMCAC, we all know, is very impor-tant in Dodge County for Head Start, food shelf, energy assis-tance, and a multitude of other services. The seven countySEMCAC Board makes decisions for the whole organization, which ultimately comes back to us locally in the form of fund-ing, programming, etc. Workforce Development is another ofthe organizations so important for Dodge. Being on that multi-county board affects us here too.3. In your opinion what specific needs does Dodge CountyhaveI know I am the right person for the next four years. My

record proves it. I am a prepared and active member of theCounty Board. I attend and participate on my assignedboards and committees. And yet I continue being an activevolunteer in my community. I have started and followedthrough on several innovative initiatives, including a first timeDodge County Strategic Plan, and have been appointed tothe Department of Human Services' Subcommittee onChildren's Mental Health. I have taken part in all the learningopportunities available to me through the Association of MNCounties, MN Community Corrections, and MN CommunityAction Program. I invite you to contact me if you are interest-ed in knowing more ([email protected]).3. Other CommentsDodge County is a gem. Through the steady hand of the

Board of Commissioners and the professional and preparedcounty staff and administration, we will continue to shine.Does that mean it will always be smooth? No. but it doesmean that we have a good base upon which to grow.

John Allen1. Family, background andeducation

Born and raised inMantorville, married to Carolfor 36 years, raised four chil-dren and have five grandchil-dren. I farmed for 25 yearsnorth of Mantorville. I servedon the Kasson-Mantorvilleschool Board for 14 years. Was on Pine Island CreameryBoard, and have served onthe Planning and Zoning com-mittee for six years. I am a

member of the Mantorville Masonic Lodge and a member ofDodge County Ffarm Bureau. I graduated from K-M HighSchool. I currently work for SL Contracting Inc. as aSuperintendent and Estimator.2. Why I decided to seek officeI would like to try to work with department heads to find

new ways to streamline operations which in return wouldreduce government spending and save taxpayer money. Ibelieve with working with our new representatives we canobtain more money to provide better infrastructure.3. In your opinion what specific needs does Dodge Countyhave

I believe that Dodge County over the past few years hasfallen behind on the basic maintenance of infrastructure; dueto the economy, funding has been limited. We need to bud-get for more extensive repairs that are needed throughoutthe county.4. Other Comments

I have lived in Dodge County my entire life and know thepeople in the area, and I truly believe that the people wantless “government.”

I welcome your vote of confidence

Open letter to the Voting Citizens of Mantorville Supporting the Re-Election of Luke Nash

As a former Mantorville Council Member, I am writing to enthusiastically endorse LukeNash for re-election as Mayor. I'm not alone in this. The majority of current council members, and at least 8 recent former council members, of all political persuasions, prefer Luke Nashcontinue as mayor.

Under Luke's leadership, budget growth has been kept to around 1-2 percent per yearwithout tapping reserve emergency funds and in spite of huge MN State Aid cuts. City bond-ing has been improved by two notches and all eligible debt has been refinanced or paid-off,saving tens of thousands. Mantorville has bought a new needed fire truck, moved forward withplans for a 7th city park, and begun building needed reserves for a mandated replacement ofour old inadequate sewer treatment plant. Mantorville has begun the long process of fixing ourdecades neglected roads and infrastructure that is costing more every year just to repair. Thecity took advantage of low construction bids by completing three years of scheduled capitolimprovements, within last years budget.

I was pleased that Mayor Luke Nash accompanied community leaders on a weekend of'Historic Preservation and Promotion' training provided by the MN State Historic PreservationOffice up in Faribault MN. Mayor Nash is also a leader of the Small Cities - League of MNCities, a military Veteran, and has 22 years experience as a deputy. He has a history of tryingto build consensus, while promoting no-nonsense decisions. Luke has no plans for higheroffice.

I would not dream of promoting my views as representing those of the many groups I'maffiliated with, but for myself, and for our cities best stewardship and long-term financialhealth, I urge you to re-elect Luke Nash as Mantorville Mayor. He gets it. No gimmicks, justsolid leadership. Thank you,

David H. Senjem (IR)1. Family, background and education• Raised in Hayfield, MN• Graduated from Luther College with biology degree• Worked 44 years at Mayo Clinic• Retired, lives in Rochester with wife Marlys; they have two adult children, Jannah (son-inlaw-Eric) and Dwight and one grandchild, Hailey2. Why I decided to seek officeServing people is something that I have a deep commitment to, it is in my genetics and

upbringing. My father was Mayor of Hayfield and my great grandfather served in the statelegislature, representing Dodge County. I fully enjoyed serving the community while on thePark Board and the Rochester City Council, and jumped at the opportunity to run for theState Senate. I want to continue serving as your Senator because I truly enjoy listening topeople, hearing their concerns, and working to make a difference in their lives. 3. Biggest Concerns

Without a question, we need to keep growing our economy to give people more and bet-ter jobs and an assurance of economic certainty. More jobs mean more income taxes andmore revenue means we can better provide for the citizens of Minnesota.

In listening to my constituents, I also know people are concerned about the completionof Highway 14 between Dodge Center and Owatonna, the threat of a freight rail bypass

dividing the county, and ensuring that our schools are always funded. Those are all issues I will carry to Saint Paul with me. 4. Other Comments

Dodge County holds a special place for me; it's is where the roots of the Senjem family have grown deep for decades. To beable to take your concerns to Saint Paul and represent our community has been the best experience I've been called to do inmy life. It would be an immense honor to continue this work for you and I humbly ask for your vote on November 6th.

I believe that: • you don’ t spend money you don’t have. • the government doesn’t create jobs, people do.• government should be the servant of the people.

Hello, I’m Duane Quam.I grew up on a farm and graduated from Byron; earned

engineering and physics degrees and worked as an engineer; served on the Byron school board, ZED governing boardand several statewide education committees. My wife Patand I have been married 28 years.

I’m asking for YOUR VOTE, on Nov. 6, to be your representative for MN HD25A.

I have been effective in my first term. My first billreformed government, and passed 184 to 6, and is now law.

My bill to improve Emergency Medical Services passed186 to 0, and is now law.

I helped close the multi-billion dollar budget deficit; converting it to a surplus of over 1.5 billion dollars.

42-45c

44-46

Judy Ohly (DFL)1. Family, background and education

I was raised on a farm in northern Minnesota. It was a dairy community but my fami-ly mostly raised hogs. It was a wonderful life and it was from those roots I learned thatwith honesty and hard work a person could accomplish most anything. I have sevenyears banking experience, 29 years in real estate and I am a small business owner. Ihave been married to Lou Ohly for 25 years and we have three children and one grand-child.

The most important part of my background is that I have been an Olmsted CountyCommissioner for nearly eight years and I am experienced with city and rural needs. As a County Commissioner I served on 13-18 committees and boards every year. Ihave developed strong relationships with many people and organizations that will behelpful as we face our challenges in Minnesota. I believe local government knows theneeds of their community the best and I will support more local control. 2. Why I decided to seek office

People have been asking me to run for Senate for the last six years. Now, more thanever the people in Senate District 25 want and need a Senator that will put the commu-nity’s interests first.

According to the Legislative Research Library we just had one of the worst sessionsin Minnesota history. When compared to other regular sessions it was the second

longest since 1880 with the least amount of bills signed into law. In addition, we had the longest state shutdown in MN history that cost us millions of dollars. We need to start focusing on what our communities care about. I know we can do better and itis time for a change.3. Biggest Concerns

Jobs and taxes are high on the list. The state is going to be faced with an estimated 4.5 billion dollar deficit next year. We cannot

borrow from our schools or borrow more money from the tobacco fund. The only options wehave are reduce spending, raise taxes or promote/create jobs.

With the looming deficit next year, the state will need to have the tax discussion. I supportsensible and fair tax reform. We can not allow our legislators to continue to push the state bud-get problems onto our local property taxes!

Our legislators need to listen to our community leaders! As an eight year CountyCommissioner I have had the pleasure of working with the Dodge County Commissioners. Allcounties are unique but we work on many things together such as water resources, solidwaste, and corrections just to name a few. Counties know how we can save money in govern-ment services but need legislation passed by the state to move forward. This has been stalledfor two years and has delayed this progress! I will work to bring more local control back tocounties!

It is time we have a Senator that will “champion” the Hwy. 14 expansion in Dodge County. This is the last piece of a highway project that is very important for safety and connectivity fromMankato to Rochester. I believe in the economic importance in this project. I will work to pro-mote the Hwy. 14 Partnership so that every township, city, and employer from Mankato toRochester is a member partner and I will not rest until funding has been identified and MnDOThas it in their plan! 4. Other Comments

I have a proven track record of helping people organize to advance important initiatives. Iam a founding member of the Zumbro Watershed Partnership (non-profit) so there would be afocus on improving our surface water quality. I am a founding member of the “Friends ofGraham Park” to help protect the history of that park. I joined 24 others to help identify housingneeds in our community and together we developed the plan to end homelessness inSoutheast Minnesota. I have worked very hard for my community and on September 17, 2012I was endorsed by the Rochester “Post-Bulletin” over Senator Dave Senjem as the best candi-date to represent Senate District 25. I have raised the bar as a County Commissioner and I willraise the bar as a senator. I would be proud and honored to have your vote on November 6!
