By Sylvia HeidemannNCBVA Staff Writer

Imagine this fictitious funeral scene: It’s a near-perfect fall day, and the leaves on the trees surrounding a camp-ground ampitheatre are just starting

to turn. Friends and family of the deceased are dressed casually in jeans, and they are laughing—a lot—because the officiant is strolling around at the front of this little outdoor theatre, telling stories about the former avid fisherman who is lying off to the side in a wicker casket. Next to the casket is a grouping of photos—family pictures and pictures of fishing and camping expe-ditions—and on a stand next to the casket is a taxidermist’s pride and joy, a large-mouth bass, the one that didn’t get away. At the conclusion of the stories, those who shared

the man’s love of fishing come one by one up to the casket carrying bamboo fishing rods (environmentally friendly substitutes for fly-rods), which they leave symbolically resting against the casket.

Does this sound a little far-fetched? Guess again. It’s not out of the realm of pos-sibility as funerals—celebrations of life—are choreographed by a celebrant. And, keeping with another trend that’s sweeping the country, celebrants may also be outspo-ken proponents of green burials.

What is a Funeral Celebrant?According to the website of the Celebrant Foundation and Institute in Montclair, NJ, “A Funeral Celebrant’s mission is to create a ceremony that reflects the wishes, beliefs, cultural background and values—religious or non-religious—of your loved one and

your family. . . A celebrant funeral honors death and celebrates life.”

To do a good job of this, a funeral celebrant literally spends hours with close family and friends to learn more about the deceased and what made his or her life unique, then crafts a “life story” ceremony for approval. The family is usually given an attractively presented personal historical record to keep as a memento and to preserve family history.

The celebrant movement report-edly started in Australia somewhere in the early ’70s as a result of that country’s influx of many ethnic, cultural and religious groups, and the additional growth of gay/lesbian groups and the desire for “same sex” marriages (which were not sanctioned by church or state). In addition to fu-neral celebrants, there are celebrants available to help people commemo-rate all of life’s milestones: wed-dings, divorces, births, graduations, special accomplishments, retirement, and almost anything one chooses to celebrate.

The Celebrant Foundation and Institute, founded by Charlotte Eu-

lette and Gaile Sarma, offers training and certification for celebrants. Their website states that there are now more than 3,000 celebrants worldwide, who have presided over more than one million ceremonies in 40 years.

Other prominent organizations for cel-ebrant training and resources include the In-Sight Institute out of Oklahoma City, OK, founded by former pastor Doug Man-ning, and the Humanist Society, which is an adjunct of the American Humanist As-sociation.

Funeral celebrants who are certified by these organizations are trained in the history of rituals, ceremonies and traditions of many cultures and religions.

Celebrants Get Good PressVisit the first two websites listed in the side-bar on page 6, review the articles published, and you’ll realize that like the green burial movement, celebrants are getting good press. This Bulletin article was triggered by a feature, “Secular ‘celebrants’ lead more funerals,” published in the August 20, 2009 edition of USA Today. In it, William Mc-Queen, the president of Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home in St. Petersburg, FL (a high retiree location) and the recently installed president of CANA, is quoted as saying: “Today, of all the ceremonies we deal with, I’d say 50% are religious or clergy-led, 20% are celebrant-led and 30% are having no ceremony or one led by family.” McQueen compared these estimates with the time period of 25 years ago, when most funeral services were religious or clergy-led. He was quoted as saying he had sent four people to be trained by the In-Sight Institute, and that these four celebrants are now on call for four Anderson-McQueen Centers in St. Petersburg.

The same USA Today article cited a 2008 survey conducted by researchers at Trinity College’s Institute for the Study of Secular-ism in Society and Culture. In the national

survey of 6,000 people, more than one in four adults (27 percent) don’t expect to have a religious service when they die. But that doesn’t mean they want to leave this earth with no celebration or ceremony. A celebrant can take the spotlight when there is no clergy to be called. Celebrating life is a good thing, and the collective funeral industry has said it’s all about celebration and personalization. (Note: To read an interesting report on the shifting religious landscape in the U.S., go to www.pewforum.org/reports.)

What it Means to YouIf the celebration of life is recognized as a positive thing, why should concrete burial vault manufacturers be concerned about the celebrancy trend? For one, celebrants can have a powerful influence on families. They may be involved in more home funerals, which often result in green burials. Green burials lead to a decrease in your market share. Therefore, celebrants represent an audience to be educated on the cons of green burials and the pros of concrete burial vaults. In addition, burial vault manufacturers need to be aware of all trends affecting their industry, whether directly or indirectly. A good way to stay abreast of trends is to attend the annual NCBVA

Convention. Check out the pre-liminary program featured in this issue. Speakers Janelle Barlow and Maureen O’Brien will have sound advice that can be directly applied to your business.

Learn How You Can

Exhibit Freeat The NCBVA Convention

We know that the economy has seriously affected everyone’s budget and sometimes the first items to be cut are your marketing opportunities. But it is important to NCBVA members to learn about new products and services in the industry, so we’re working very hard to provide affordable, alternative ways for Associate Members/Suppliers to participate.

This year NCBVA is offering Associate Members/Suppliers the opportunity to exhibit FREE* at the Annual Convention. You can’t get any better than that! In order to make this possible, there will not be pipe and drape booths. There will only be table-top or stand- alone displays. There will be no exhibit company involved, so shipping and storage of any materials will be the sole responsibility of the exhibitor.

Each exhibitor will be provided a 6-ft draped table on which to display literature or samples and two chairs in the main convention meeting area––Partnership Plaza. All of the educational programs take place in this area and special time is allocated for attendees to visit with Exhibitors.

A Free table will be offered to any registered associate/supplier attendee. Additional personnel at the table must also be a registered. Please join us at the NCBVA Convention February 2-4, 2010, which is being held in conjunction with World of Concrete. Details and registration forms are on pages 12-14.

J. Scott Calkins, Esq.NCBVA Counsel A New Jersey investor who owns and manages memorial park-type cemeteries in that state bought five cemeteries in Chatham County, GA (which includes the city of Savan-nah). After spending considerable money to improve those cemeteries, this investor determined that his investments were not generating sufficient revenue, so allegedly he eliminated the middle man and obtained a dealership in Clark Grave Vaults and an exclusive distributorship in Goria plastic vaults. The owner of the Savannah Cemetery Group (SCG) then banned concrete vaults and liners from his five cem-eteries. He also is on record as saying that, in his opinion, concrete vaults are inferior to the vaults that he was mar-keting. Two concrete burial vault manufacturers that service the area in question, along with several local funeral homes, collectively obtained Georgia counsel and obtained a per-manent injunction against the prohibition of concrete burial vaults. Although the owner instituted a new rule that only his cemetery employees could handle and install concrete vaults within his cemeteries, this restrictive policy was re-scinded prior to the trial on the request for the injunction. The owner of the SCG then retained new Atlanta counsel and filed motion for a new trial. It was expected that the lower court would deny the new motion and, if so, the SCG would then appeal the matter to the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Nationwide ImpactThis is a case of first impression in Georgia and the appeal will result in the only modern precedent on this issue, and therefore, in both counsels’ and my opinion, will have a na-tionwide impact. To put it plainly, an adverse outcome of this litigation could affect your business in your state just like the spread of the swine flu throughout the USA. I am not trying to scare you, but your attention to this litigation is imperative. Counsel for the Savannah area litigants has been successful to date in obtaining the injunction. I have had several conversations with him and exchanged communications regarding the litigation earlier this year. He has recently asked me to help in obtaining funds for the costs associated with the appeal. I have kept NCBVA’s officers and Board of Directors and management informed on this extremely important litigation. During the next meeting of the Board, which will probably be held in early October, this matter will likely be discussed and a plan of action adopted. In my opinion, between cremation and the “green concept” for cemeteries, your industry is facing yet another threat that must be met with passion and force. Take note that the main issue we are facing is the banning of concrete burial vaults and liners of any kind or design in such cemeteries. Please also note that the purpose of this ban is to eliminate the middle man (you) and to enable the successful promotion and sale of steel and polymer (plastic) vaults that the cemeteries in question are marketing.

By Jan MonahanEditor, The Bulletin

The rumbling roar of a couple dozen mo-torcycle engines breaks the early morning serenity of the cemetery grounds. The riders are dressed in the typical biker uniforms—jeans, t-shirts, assorted caps or headbands, jacketssome leather—emblazoned with multicolor patches. They are a diverse group of men and women, all ages, and they have ridden the long roads, some heading out before dawn, to honor one of their own on this solemn day. These are the Patriot Guard Riders and “one of their own” may be a person who has never mounted one of these machines of chrome and steel. Rather, one of their own is anyone who has served this country in the military—and they have come to pay respect and honor him/her. I encountered this surreal scenario on a recent field trip to our local cemetery to take some pictures for The Bulletin. My latent re-porter’s curiosity kicked in so I hung around to find out more. An 88-year-old Air Force veteran was being laid to rest on this day. It was a full hour before the hearse and family would ar-rive. The Patriots waited quietly in Florida’s summer heat. They were a stark contrast to the Air Force honor guard—dressed in their crisply starched blues—that was practicing the steps they would take to carry the casket, make the 12 folds of the American flag and raise their rifles for the 21-gun salute. They spoke quietly amongst themselves, shifting from foot to foot the heavy poles bearing the large red, white and blue Ameri-

can flags that decorate the back fenders of their bikes. When word came that the pro-cessional was on its way, they encircled the perimeter of the gravesite, taking sentry-like positions. Patriot Guard Riders began in 2005 in Kansas with an American Legion Riders chapter that went out in support of a fallen hero whose funeral was being picketed by protestors. They went on to develop their Mission: to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of

the family to 1) Show sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their com-munities and 2) Shield a mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors (through only legal and non-violent means). When questioned, one of the Riders said, “We have only one thing in common be-sides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. You don’t have to be a rider to join the group; you don’t have to be a veteran. The only prerequisite is respect.” And Respectful they are. During the ceremony they barely move. The only movement is the rustling of their flags in

the breeze and their slow-motion salutes at the appropriate moments throughout the ser-vice. Not until after the family has departed do they break their protective circle around the site and head back to their bikes for the oftentimes long ride home. I remember a good friend (who recently buried her husband at the National Cemetery in Rhode Island) telling me about a band of bikers who were there for the service. How touched she was by this outpouring of dig-nity and respect for her Veteran husband by this group of strangers who take time out of their lives to honor a fallen soldier and his/her family. Similar expressions are posted in 31 pag-es of Letters of Appreciation on the group’s website www.patriotguard.org. Most echo sentiments like this: “You were a big part in the celebration of the life of a wonderful Husband, Dad, Granddaddy and Soldier. He was very proud to serve his country. I wish you could have known him personally, but I can guarantee that his spirit lives on in many people and he will be watching over each of you as he stands with God in heaven. If he were able he would want to thank you for the comfort you gave to his family. For all the families you have comforted by your mere presence I thank you.” A non-profit, tax-exempt, all-volunteer organization, Patriot Guard Riders also sponsors The Fallen Warrior Scholarship Fund that provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships to US military family members of our Fallen Warriors in their pursuit of higher education. There are groups in most states across the nation and Canada, their numbers reaching more than 171,000.

Google “green burials” and you come up with nearly two million references. Consider the massive exposure in the Internet and the news media and you’ll soon come to the conclusion that there is a growing movement against tradi-tional burials and burial vaults. Vault market share is becoming smaller and smaller. Author, lecturer and business owner Maureen O’Brien thinks solu-tions to this problem can be found right in the same burial vault industry that is losing market share. She will take vault manufacturers and dealers through a two-hour exercise to find the answers that will bring back market share.

OSHA requires annual inspections of overhead cranes, forklifts and other material handling equipment by a qualified outside service company.

It also requires the equipment to be rated for load capacity and marked accordingly. Using a piece of material handling equipment beyond its rated capacity is a serious violation.

OSHA also requires a device that prevents an automatic restart in the event of a power interruption.

OSHA has begun enforcing those rules and imposing heavy fines in the wake of several accidents involving construction cranes.

In a recent incident, a Pennsylvania precast manufacturer was fined $65,000 for overloading and lack of third-party inspections. A word to the wise…..

Wilbert Funeral Services, Inc. Wins Two Ginny Awards For the fifth year in a row, Wilbert Funeral Services’ Cremation Choices catalog is the proud recipient of the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) 2009 Ginny Award of Excellence for Outstanding Product Catalog. In addition, the philanthropic efforts of the Wilbert Foundation were also recognized with a “Ginny” for the work the organization does with pediatric hospitals.

CANA created the Ginny Awards in 2002 as a way to honor professionals in the crema-tion and memorialization industry. The Cremation Choices catalog heightens awareness of the many selections available to families when cremation is chosen as the means of final interment. In addition to product selections, the catalog discusses service options as well as the many ways cremation products can be personalized.

Axis Introduces New TrailerAxis Corporation has just introduced a new self-propelled dump trailer. “Now, if our customers need to move and dump anything, they can do it with ease and safety with our new self-propelled dump trailer,” says Matt Oldiges. Made from the same high quality materials and parts as the company’s vault handlers, the dump trailers by Axis Corporation will last for years and provide customers with the same peace of mind they have in using all Logan trailers.

Trigard’s Interactive Healing Tree PackageThe Healing Tree is a part of a new Trigard Celebration of Life package that allows families to participate in an interactive ceremony at the gravesite as they say their final goodbyes.

The Healing Tree is designed for the white marble Aegean vault cover. The tree design is three-dimensional, and has twenty dove-shaped memory rings scattered throughout the top

of the vault. The family can say their final goodbyes as they take a memory ring from the Healing Tree as a keepsake to wear on a necklace, attach to a keychain or simply keep in a pocket as a memento of their loved one.

“The Healing Tree creates an experience where fam-ily members can be an active participant in the ceremony of their loved one. We need to remember that the services we provide are really for the living,” says Linda Darby-Sempsrott, CEO of Trigard. A family can celebrate a life lived with the Healing Tree commemorative poem that is provided with Trigard’s Healing Tree kit. Trigard also offers literature with a tear-away poem, a marketing DVD that shows the Healing Tree being used at the gravesite, and

everything needed to display the Healing Tree in the funeral home, including extra memory rings, necklaces, key rings, and jewelry stands.
