There is a contrast in today’s Gospel between two types of greatness and two types of ambition seeking it. The first is that shown by James and John at the beginning of the scene. They came to Jesus and tell Him ’We want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.’ Jesus was special in their eyes because of His power and they wanted Him to use His power for their own benefit. When Jesus asked ‘What do you wish for Me to do for you’ they said: ‘Grant to us to sit, one at Your right hand and one at Your left, in Your kingdom.’ They wanted to be Jesus’ right-and-left-hand men simply by asking for it. They wanted to be above the other ten apostles and everyone else as well. Little did they know that God the Father had determined that two crucified thieves had been chosen to be at Jesus’ right and left as He entered his kingdom!

The second type of greatness was described by Jesus at the end of the Gospel passage. After the other ten got perturbed at the sons of Zebedee, Jesus called the twelve together and said: ’You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant and whoever wishes to be first among you must be the slave of all.’ He who is the Way showed them the path to greatness and the means to become truly great. Jesus wants us all to be great, not mediocre. He came down from heaven, died on the cross and rose in order to make it possible for each of us to get the gift of life. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told us to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Jesus was not exaggerating or calling us to do something that with His help is impossible. Over and over again He stressed that He wanted us to seek and hunger for greatness.

Greatness comes from being like Jesus and following the Gospels. Jesus told His apostles many time in the Gospels: ’Follow Me!’ In today's Gospel, Jesus told the apostles that the path to greatness is to do what He, Himself was doing. ‘The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for the many.’ We need to look out for the interests of others, not our own. Be like Jesus– He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, death on a cross. This loving service was at the root of Jesus’ greatness.

Jesus Christ would put these words about serving others rather than being served into action during the Last Supper. During the Last Supper, the night He was betrayed, Jesus stood up, took off His outer garment, tied a towel around His waist and began to wash the feet of His apostles. This was a menial task done by slaves. Real greatness in the kingdom of God would not be determined by fighting for positions but by fighting for the towel. The greatest would be the one who would be able to drink the cup of Christ’s blood. To be number one would not be decided by sharing Jesus’ power but by sharing His love.

James, John and the other apostles were chosen by Jesus because they had a desire for greatness. Their conceptions of greatness however needed to be changed. It was not an easy conversion for them. They drank the cup that Jesus drank and are now seated at His right hand in the Eternal Kingdom. Christ wants all of us to undergo this same transformation. He wants all of us to desire to be the greatest.

We are all called through Baptism to love others just as Jesus loved us. Love is not a feeling but a direct choice—a choice to place others ahead of ourselves. It is a choice to imitate the example of Jesus in washing the feet of others, in doing the most simple and lowly of tasks. It is only in following Jesus’ example of loving service that we will become all Jesus wants us to be– Great in the Kingdom of Heaven!

BAPTISMS

We welcome into our family all newly baptized Christians and offer congratulations to the parents of:

Today we celebrate Mission Sunday - a day to pray for the Missions and to renew our own challenge to Share the Gospel. Our first obligation is for ourselves. We need to get clos-er to Jesus. We need prayer, reflection, and public wor-ship. We need to think about morning prayer, night pray-er, prayer during the day and prayer at meals. We need to go to Mass and receive Holy Communion as often as possible - even everyday. Our next challenge is our family - We need to pray for them and with them. It is our role to journey with them toward Heaven. Next our challenge is to our neighbors. Invite them to come and pray with us. In a gentle way, tell them how Jesus has touched you, especially at St. Gabriel’s. Tell them about our hospitality. Tell them they are welcome here because we are all sinners - and we need each oth-er. Tell them about our Coat Exchange, Topics on Tap, Music, Joy, Children, Religious Education, Holy Name, Ladies Guild, CYO, Seniors, Scouts (including Pancake Breakfast), Dinners, Parties, Raffles, Fish Frys etc. etc. etc. Our next challenge is the Church in America - Pray for an increase in vocation to the Priesthood. Pray that all citi-zens become involved in making America a better place. Our last challenge is to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Support our Missions and Missionaries, pray for them everyday. Remember you can light one candle or curse the dark-ness. Light one candle. The Light of Jesus will be with you. May the Light of Jesus help us to grow closer to Him and one another. Love & Prayers,

We extend thanks to all of our home schooling families who have chosen to help their children grow in their faith formation by teaching them at home. With our parents being the chief cate-

chists, it is very fitting that you do so. Please do not hesi-tate to call us if we can assist you in any way, as you un-dertake this journey together in your families. Our # is 668-2070.

We also extend our thanks to all of our volunteer teachers in our classes here in the parish hall, who have chosen this wonderful ministry. You are good & faithful servants in-deed...running the good race...and fighting the good fight. We are very grateful to you all. Our teachers come from all walks of life, and bring with them so much life experience and so many talents. Recently, one of our teachers, Ange-la Banaszak (she actually teaches 2 classes!) presented a workshop for the Capital District Child Care Council in Troy, N.Y. The Conference was entitled, Grow at the Garden, and Ms. Angela presented Theatre—Education and Fun.

Angela is also a Community Education Instructor at West Seneca Central Schools. Our students & families are blessed to have her in our Rel. Ed. program.

A common question being asked these days re: the upcom-ing election is “Are you better off today that you were 4 years ago?” This is a fair question for an American. It may be for a Catholic, as well. But being Catholic asks that we expand that question a bit. Remember, catholic means universal...that human family thing...that common good thing...dare we see the global community thing. Anyway, we came across a quote the other day which is consistent with what our church leaders have been saying for such a long time. Here it is... “Charity consists of satisfying all our desires and then pass-ing on some of what is left over. Justice, on the other hand, requires adjusting our desires to the needs of others, so that there is a planetary sharing of all we have a right to.” Douglas Roche

On the same subject, I would like to share with you a sug-gestion from our new Bishop, Richard Malone. I truly en-joyed my conversation the night of our Confirmation with Bishop Malone. I asked him how he would have responded to a political question posed to me by one of our teachers. He responded that we Catholics need to have “informed consciences” when headed to the polls. Great answer! So, I thought I might pass on to you one way to do that. Check out the website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. (USCCB) They have good resources on Faithful Citizenship. In particular, I encourage you to go to seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching. As part of Bishops’ Justice, Peace, and Human Develop-ment efforts, our Church leaders have written extensively re: Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family,

Community, and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and the Care for God’s Creation. Surely the Bishops’ rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holi-ness amidst the challenges of modern society would be worthwhile for us.

PRAYER CLOTHS

AVAILABLE

What is a prayer cloth? In Acts 19:11-12, it speaks of how cloths were touched by Peter and Paul and taken back to the sick who were often cured of their ills. It says that “So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul that when face cloths or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.” Prayer cloths are sacramental. As in the case of all sacramentals, their power comes not from the sign (CLOTH) itself, but by means of the Church’s official prayer of blessing, a power flowing from the re-demptive act of Jesus, elicited by the Church’s interces-sion. Sacramental like prayer cloths are to be used as “focus points” funneling one’s faith and devotion of the person using the sacramental. These blessed cloths can be given to those persons in need of God’s healing grac-es, asking the Blessed Mother’s intercession for both physical and/or emotional well being.

Inquiries for these sacramental and blessed prayer cloths can be made at St. Gabriel’s Gift Shoppe in the Church where a request sheet can be completed and subse-quent contact from a member of the Prayer Cloth Ministry will occur.
