The bike ride to Tours undertaken in May raised in excess of £5,000 for the charity, which will do a great deal towards helping disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe and Africa. Thanks to all sponsors.

The Annual Auction of Promises will be held in Bathford Parish Hall on Saturday 15 November at 7pm. Already more than 30 pledges have been received, details of which will be in the November issue. Tickets for the event are £3, which includes a glass of wine and nibbles, and will be available shortly.

The £100,000 event was held by kind permission of Simon and Charlotte Crowfoot at their home on one of the better days in an unpredictable summer and we now look forward to the next £100,000 in ? years time.

Should anyone like more details about the charity's work, then please contact us. DVDs, leaflets, visits to the charity's headquarters and talks from the charityitself can be arranged.

Mary Teed gave a very humorous and enjoyable talk about her experience learning to "flower arrange", at all the churches at which she had been the minister. Our next meeting will be a social afternoon with a sales table for swapping books and puzzles. Letters To The Bulletin

Dog Fouling On Bathford HillAs a caring villager, mother, dog owner etc, I feel compelled to write; What has happened to Bathford Hill?I walk up to the school at least twice a day with 2 children in tow and our new 'game' is to hop over or side step dog poo left by irresponsible owners and I can honestly say it is not the odd bit of offending muck but a trail right up to the school gate! Come on people if you can't be bothered to pick it up, at least have the courtesy to kick it to the kerb!As for the plastic bus shelters at the bottom of the hill, could we please have a couple of plastic bins to match? Maybe this will encourage the litter bugs and dog owners to deposit their waste thoughtfully.Yours in hope of a cleaner villageG Johnson

Bathford Transition InitiativeThe End of SuburbiaA popular film to be screened at Bathford Parish Rooms, Saturday 11 October at 7.45pm Free Admission. It is a film that has introduced millions to the challenge posed by declining oil reserves around the world and is a winner of many awards. It sets out the case for reducing our oil consumption in a clear, understandable and sobering way. This is truly one film that will change your life and the way you look at the world. The film will be followed by drinks and nibbles, (contributions welcome) and adiscussion about some of the issues raised by the film.

Harvest Help and Harvest ShareDo you have too much fruit to pick at this time of year? We are setting up a simpleregister of villagers who have too much fruit, and of people who would be willing to help gather it in return for a share of the harvest. (Perhaps the shop could have some to sell too?) We also have a professional Edible Landscape Gardener, Andy Broadley, who helps at Bathfords’ Broadlands Community Orchard and has offered to prune some fruit trees in return for a share of the harvest. So, if you would like to join our register whether it is for this year or next year, please call Emma Jackson on 858388 leaving:

Letter From Rev. Tim Ling

What do we believe at St. Swithun’s?

AT ST. SWITHUN’S WE BELIEVE THAT GOD IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PEOPLE - all people. Including you. God is passionate about you. God is not like the person who says, ‘I love humankind; I just can’t stand my next door neighbour.’ No, God is passionate about every individual on the planet. God is passionate about you. And ‘you’, just as you are; not ‘you’ in your ‘Sunday best’. When we mess up, God isn’t standing there tut-tutting as he adds another black mark in his book. His heart is aching when he sees the mess we make of things. And here’s the thing: God’s passion for us means that he isn’t prepared to leave us where we are; he’s in the business of enabling us to change. And that is what makes living as a Christian so exciting.

How do we know all this? By seeing what God was like when he came and lived among us. Jesus was passionate about people - all people. He spent all his time with people - all sorts of people. We see him at meals, at parties, surrounded by children, enjoying the company of those at whom other people turned up their noses. When people broke the rules, Jesus didn’t tut-tut; but neither did he just leave them to it. He loved them too much for that. He made it possible for them to begin to change. That’s what made him such an exciting bloke to be around. It still is today.

But Jesus didn’t just love individuals. He loved communities. He loved to see people being together - at work, at play, at worship. That’s why people should go to church: not because it is the ‘religious’ thing to do (Jesus wasn’t big into religion); not to get a tick in the book (he had some extremely harsh things to say to people who thought they were holier than others); but because that is what

life is about - people, loved by God, enjoying life in all its aspects, together.

At St. Swithun’s we believe that God is passionate about people. He’s passionate about you.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS852486, 859007

[email protected] www.bathford.net

Obituaries - the council notes with sympathy the death of a parishioner, butis grateful that lately the sad news has been announced by families with anobituary notice in the shop. This has allowed those who wish to, to attend the funeral and pay their last respects. The parish council considers it is important that the life of a parishioner can be marked by the community and would like to inform families that they are welcome to put an obituary notice in the shop or on the parish notice boards should they wish to do so.

Draft minutes of Annual Parish Meeting - the draft minutes of the Annual Parish Meeting held on 21 April 2008 can be viewed on the council's website or a copy obtained from the Clerk. Any amendments to the minutes should be sent to the Clerk by 31 October. The minutes will be submitted to the council's meeting in November for formal approval.

Dog Fouling - the council is very concerned about the unpleasant amount of dog fouling and several complaints have been made. The Community Warden has walked around and shares the council's concerns. The parish council will be encouraging the Warden to make regular visits in an effort to encourage dog owners to clear up after their dogs. The Warden has the power to issue fines to those found to be committing an offence by not clearing up after their dog. Dog fouling anywhere in the village is unpleasant and can be adanger to children, but it is particularly nasty around the perimeter of the school, outside the shop and on the playing field. Please clear up after your dog wherever it fouls.

School Parking - the council would like to remind parents parking for school that under no circumstances should the double yellow lines or zig-zag area be used for parking or dropping off however briefly. The markings are there to ensure visibility and the safety of children at the junctions and hazardous bend in Dovers Park. The PCSO will be asked to monitor that the parking restrictions are being observed.

Cardboard and garden waste collection - the collection appears to be coming around the village much earlier and residents are reminded to put their recycling out for collection before 7.30am or the night before (after 8pm) to ensure that they do not miss the collection.

Mobile Library - the mobile library visits the village on Thursday fortnightly. Details of times can be found on the Bulletin website.

Countryside Alliance Awards - the categories for the Awards open for nomination are, Best Local Food Award, Best Village Shop, Rural Enterprise Award, Daily Telegraph Best Traditional Business Award and Rural Hero. If you know anyone who deserves a nomination then these will be accepted online at: www.countrysideallianceawards.co.ukhttp://www.countrysideallianceawards.co.uk/ until 27 October.
