All 1996 and on Toyota Transmissions and Transaxles

Intermittent P0770 (Shift Solenoid E Performance/Stuck Off) Code

P0770 is basically a torque converter clutch ratio code. Toyota uses two trip logic for setting the P0770, so even if lock up never works, it will take an entire day or two for the code to set. Toproperly diagnose the P0770, the ECM must be put into “check mode” so that the code can be switched to one trip logic. Only in check mode will the computer set the code when the fault is present during the test drive. Consult your scan tool’s user manual to determine if your tool has the function available.

RE5F22A (AW55-50SN)Failsafe No Transmission Codes

2004 and up Nissan Maxima, Quest or 2005 and up Altima with an RE5F22A Asian Warner fi ve speed transaxle in failsafe. The check engine light is on with no transmission codes stored. There is no access to transmission scan tool data available on some after market scan tools. Engine code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor (Phase) Circuit Bank 1, P0345 Camshaft Position Sensor (Phase) Circuit Bank 2 and/or P0335 Crankshaft Position sensor may be stored. The Camshaft Positionsensors locations are shown in fi gures 1 and 2. The Crankshaft Position sensor is shown in fi gure 3. Any one of these sensors will place the transmission in failsafe.

The only other symptom may be a hard start condition when warm ok cold, caused by a failing Camshaft Position Sensor. An engine surge or misfi re with the tachometer fl uctuating 200-300 rpm is caused by a problem with the Crankshaft Position sensor. Nissan technical service bulletin (TSB) # NTB04-063 refers to problems with both camshaft position sensors but no information about placing the transmission into failsafe.

All three sensors are three wire Hall Effect type and share the same power feed from the ECM relay (fi gures 3, 4 & 5). The ground for all three sensors is shown in fi gure 6. The Crankshaft Position sensor because of its location (bottom center of transmission bell housing) may be subject to connec-tion or wiring problems caused by oil leaks. One other problem that can occur is during transmission removal the crankshaft position sensor hole being used to pry the converter away from the fl ywheel (fi gure 7). This procedure may bend the fl ywheel causing the sensor signal to become erratic also placing the transmission into failsafe mode.

01M/01N/01P2nd Gear Start, Shuttle Shifts, Binds in R, Bump on TakeoffAudi/VolkswagenDecember, 2009

01M/01N/01P2nd Gear Start, Shuttle Shifts, Binds in R, Bump on Takeoff

Some Audi and Volkswagen vehicles with the 4-Speed 01M, 01N or 01P transmission may have a 2nd gear start, shuttle shifts 2-1-2-1 or 3-4-3, binds in Reverse and or bumps during takeoff from a stop. There may be no codes present. These concerns may occur after an overhaul, or other repairs.

With a VAG or compatible scanner, check for any OSS rpm (not VSS) signal with the engine idling in P/N. If there is, either the OSS and TSS sensors have been swapped or the speed sensor circuits are shorted.

Confi rm that the TSS wire colors at the sensor are Green and Red. The wiring for the OSS sensor may have a long lead on it or the harness will be connected directly to it. The OSS wire colors for either design, are White and Yellow.

NOTE: The wiring harness attached to the OSS has been known to short. This may cause these con-cerns related to this technical service bulletin to occur. In addition, it can also cause a high gear start.

Figure: The OSS is located at the rear of the transmission. You may need to remove the battery tray and or transaxle mount brackets for access.

5AT or MDPATCC Shudder

Some 2004-2005 Saturn VUE All Wheel Drive vehicles with the 5AT or MDPA transmission, may exhibit a shudder during TCC operation between 35-40 MPH. According to the factory information (PIP3713B or Doc. 1873899), verify the concern is present. If so, replace the torque converter and refl ash the PCM with the updated calibration.

42/44/46/47/48REFalse Temperature Sensor Reading

Early transmission sensors had a decrease in resistance as temperature increased. This sensor was used from 1993 1/2 through 1999. Starting in 2000 the transmission temperature sensor reads the opposite, resistance increased as the temperature increased. It is very important not to mix these sensors up. The best way to ID what year you have is to look at the transducer connector. The early transducer has an oval connector and the late transducer has a rectangle connector.
