Rabbis Message New PartnershipDear Friends:
With the support and approval of our Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce our par-ticipation in an exciting new program of partnership with the Jewish Board of Family andChildrens Services of UJA. It will provide all the rabbis and templeofficers with much needed support for our older adults. I have inserted the announcementfrom the JBFCS below. We will be talking more about it in the coming months. If youhave any questions at all, or know immediately that you would like to avail yourself of thisprogram for yourself, a parent or relative, or someone you know, please call me at the tem-ple: (718) 638-7600 or e-mail me at [email protected].

Last spring, as we marked the 160th Anniversary ofUnion Temple, we celebrated the flowering of creativ-ity in our community, our Renaissance. After watch-ing the Union Temple performance of the Selichot
play The Gates Are Closing - acted, directed andstage-managed by congregants - Im reminded againof just how talented our members are.
In the last few years, Union Temple has presented artshows and a crafts fair, showcasing our membershandiwork - painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry andmultimedia creations of all kinds. The Temple hosted aconcert by a member composer, two programs of Yid-dish songs and a series of choral concerts. Memberswrote and performed a Purimshpiel starring DonaldTrump (you had to be there), and a straight-up perform-
ance ofFiddler on the Roofis coming in December.
And lets not forget the interior decoration, gardening, copywriting, editing, graphic design, photography andfilmmaking all flourishing at Union Temple.
Under the leadership of Rabbi Linda Goodman, herselfa musician, music has been an integral part of worshipat Union Temple. We have been blessed with the in-credible voice of Student Cantor Maria Dubinsky and
the vibrant musicality of our Music Director, Dr. Jona-than Hall. Our services have been enhanced with flute, guitar and most recently, at High Holy Day services, saxophone. Were starting an adult choir, and the youthchoir continues to delight us.
The beauty of the words and the surroundings, the gor-geous music, it all intensifies the richness of the spiri-tual experience. At the same time, creative expressiontaps into the talents of our diversely gifted member-ship and brings us together as a community.
I think were onto something. Is there a newPurimshpiel in the works?

I just finished reading Outwitting History by AaronLansky, and really enjoyed it. Abe Barnett will lead abook discussion about Outwitting History at the Broth-erhood meeting on Sunday morning, October 25th,
at 10 AM. Well have bagels and coffee, of course, and all are welcome to attend.
Here is the publishers summary ofOutwitting History:
When he was a twenty-three-year-old graduate student, AaronLansky stumbled upon an alarm-ing fact: throughout NorthAmerica, thousands of Yiddishbooks books that had survivedHitler and Stalin were being
discarded and destroyed. As anolder generation passed on, moreoften than not their precious Yid-dish volumes were literallythrown in the trash by childrenand grandchildren unable to readthe language. An entire literature was onthe verge of extinction. So Lansky issueda public appeal for unwanted Yiddishbooks. The response was overwhelming.
When Lansky started out, it was believedthat fewer than 70,000 Yiddish-languagebooks existed. Lansky and a team ofyoung volunteers hauled books from cel-
lars, attics, synagogues, abandoned build-ings, and even dumpsters and recoveredthat number in six months. Twenty-fiveyears and one and one-half million books
later, the National Yiddish Book Center isone of the fastest-growing Jewish culturalorganizations in the world. Outwitting His-
tory is an inspiring adventure tale toldwith the exuberance of a man whosepassion and persistence created a homefor a precious legacy. And it confirmsthe prediction made by Isaac BashevisSinger when he accepted the Nobelprize: Yiddish has not yet said its lastword.
That summary only hints at Lanskysadventures in collecting and distributingYiddish books, not just in New York andNew England, but all over the world. And the National Yiddish Book Centersactivities steadily expanded in other
ways as well. For example, the answer tothe Trivial Pursuit question, What wasthe first literature to be digitized? Yid-dish! And they mean the entire literature.
So join us on October 25th
for a discussion of a re-markable story.
-Steve Segall , Brotherhood President

With the beauty of our High Holy Days services stillringing in our ears and our hearts, Sisterhood entersOctober filled with inspiration and energy, eager to
start our exciting new season. Mark your calendar forSunday, October 18th, at 10 AM, for you won't wantto miss our first Rosh Chodesh Seder of the new year.Besides celebrating the vital role of Jewish women inour religion, our culture, and our world, we'll be dis-cussing the novel The Septembers of Shiraz by DaliaSofer. It's the moving story of a Jewish-Iranian familycaught up in the terror that reigned after the revolu-tion. Even if you don't have a chance to read the book, you won't want to miss taking part in what will defi-
nitely be a memorable discussion. As always, our ta-ble will be set with delicious delights, so bring yourappetite as well as your enthusiasm.
We thank all of you who sent in your dues. If itslipped your mind in this busy season, not to worry.Your membership checks are always welcome. Justwrite one for $36, made out to Sisterhood of UnionTemple, and mail it to the temple office. It's one smallbut important step on the road to tikkun olam.
A happy and blessed Sukkot and Simchat Torah to all!

Religious School is off to a strong start this year. By thetime you read thisBulletin article we will be preparingto celebrate Simchat Torah on Erev Shabbat, Fridaynight, October 9th. It is a tradition at Union Temple,
and many Reform temples, to welcome new students toour Religious School with a consecration ceremony.
The word consecration has several meanings. In thecontext of the Religious School, the definition a com-mitment of your time to some cherished purpose ismost apt. The devotion of parents and children who ar-rive early Sunday mornings and forgo other activities tofurther their Jewish education is truly a commitment ofprecious time for a cherished purpose. We celebratethis dedication at Simchat Torah with singing, dancingand hakafot, circling around the sanctuary with the To-
rah. The new students are called up to the bimah for ablessing and receive small Torah scrolls of their own.
The Simchat Torah service is an appropriate time forthe consecration ceremony because we conclude ouryearly reading of the entire Torah and begin again. There are two Torah readings; the last verses of Deu-teronomy and the beginning of Genesis. This concre-tizes the ongoing nature of the study ofTorah, and wealso rejoice in the gift ofTorah, our ancient source oftradition, sacred stories, values and rituals.
This year as we renew our studies at Union Temple Re-ligious School we are beginning the year with a newcurriculum, and expanded programs. The overview of
the curriculum is called a curriculum map. At presentthis traces the course of learning from the Kinder Kefyear to the end of seventh grade and it can be expandedthrough confirmation, and post confirmation. The term
map is used because planning a curriculum is a bit likeplanning a trip. There is a limited amount of time so itis important to establish goals and to choose a destina-tion and places to visit along the way.
In the culture of religious schools in the United States, preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah has often becomethe de facto end point for many curriculums. Preparingfor this event is a worthy goal but it is not a final desti-nation. Deciding on what we would like to impart toour children during their time in our Religious Schoolis an important discussion to have with parents, teach-
ers and clergy. I would propose that in the most gen-eral terms we hope that our children have journeysthrough life filled with joy and purpose. The responsi-bility of the Religious School and the Temple is to de-velop a community where the children can learn aboutJudaism, God, spirituality, prayer, tikkun olam(repairing the world/social justice), and Israel, all thewhile developing a sense of Jewish identity. We arealso committed to supporting families in their ownefforts to establish homes that balance American cul-ture and values with Judaism.
In our efforts to achieve these goals we are strengthen-ing our Religious School by adding a weekly KinderKef program. Joie Golomb is the creative and capableteacher of this new class. I would like to especiallythank our Board Member, Dina Rabiner, for her helpin spreading the word to the Brooklyn community. Iwould also like to welcome Lisa Kingston and CaroleGould who are rabbinical students at Hebrew UnionCollege and are joining our faculty as co-teachers ofthe seventh grade class. Welcome back to our veteranteachers Rachel Dayan, Tzipi Hazan and Avi
Reinharz, and our songleader Josh Adland, and wel-come to all our new and returning families.
See you at Simchat Torah services,
-Ann Landowne, Principal
P.S. I would like to extend an invitation to the com-munity to attend the Shabbat morning service on Oc-tober 17th at 10:30 AM where I will deliver a sermonas a part of my responsibilities as your rabbinic intern.

The teaching staff returned to school after Labor Dayrenewed and ready to start a wonderful new year. Inaddition to greeting our long-term staff, the preschoolwelcomed four new staff members: Jenny Torgerson,Beverly Alexander, Natalie Roth and Dawn Saunders.Jenny Torgerson, who teaches our Chickadees class(two year olds), is currently working towards her Mas-ters Degree in Early Childhood Education at BankStreet College. Beverly Alexander, Jennys assistant, has a long history with the school; she has worked as awonderful substitute teacher with us for several years.Another familiar face, Natalie Roth, joins the pre-school staff after working for the last seven summersin our summer program. Natalie is working with AlexBeers as the assistant teacher in both the Sparrows(three year olds) and Starlings (two year olds) classes. The new floater is Dawn Saunders. In addition toworking as a substitute teacher at the preschool, Dawnalso ran a home-based preschool program. We are for-tunate to have such a talented group joining our team!
In other news, the new carpeting was installed in thebig room, giving the whole school a sharp, clean look. The bathroom also received a partial face lift, addingto the fresh look of the school.
Were in high gear, as we start the school year. Eachchild has already come in for a pre-preschool visit overthe past week. The purpose of this initial contact is tofacilitate the childs bonding with the teachers and tohelp the child feel at home in the classroom. We startthe school year with a phase-in period, in which we di-vide the kids into smaller groups, and offer an abbrevi-ated school day. During the phase-in period, childrenget to know their classmates, start to learn the daily rou-tine, and gradually separate from their parents. Thephase-in period is a key element to developing a trust-
ing relationship with the teachers. During this period,we demonstrate day in and day out that school is a safeand fun place and that parents will always come back atthe end of the school day. We have a lot of importantwork ahead of us; we understand that the early days ofthe school year are critical ones, forming the foundationon which the school year rests.
