From the Rabbi Hakhnasat Orkhim. Whether you are building a sukkah or not, please use this time of year to consider your commitment to hospitality. When was the last time you invited a new family into your home? Call the shul to ask if there are any new members in the community or college students that may be interested in home hospitality? Commit to one Shabbat a month to invite fellow congregants to your home? There is no better way to build a sense of community. To help the needy, to build community or simply to extend kindness – these are many reasons to welcome people into your home. It also offers us the opportunity to expand our horizons. A new face at your table will help the members of your home expand beyond your natural social circles, perhaps learn new Jewish rituals and grow in warmth and wisdom. Hospitality, after all, is more than a mitzvah. It is also a spiritual demeanor to which we can all aspire. Joanne and I wish our CBI family a pleasant and joyful Sukkot. Hag Sameah!

Hospitality, after all, is more than a mitzvah

Hakhnasat Orkhim – hospitality is not always the easiest mitzvah to fulfill. In

a hectic world, our homes mark sacred territory protecting us from the outside world. We determine who enters our home, and by doing so we signal our willingness to let another individual cross the threshold into who we are. We ready to celebrate the festival of Sukkot. Beyond the lulav and etrog, the most recognizable symbol of this holiday is the Sukkah, the fragile booths we build large enough to enjoy our festival meals. Traditionally, the structures are reminiscent of the wilderness wanderings. We eat in booths to remind us that our dwellings are never as permanent as we would often believe. This year, I encourage you to consider the message of a Sukkot and include the mitzvah of

of a community’s mourning. This included singing. While the centuries that followed saw an evolution in the liturgy, which replaced the sacrifices, the music was left out.

As we enter the home stretch of the High Holyday season with Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, I want to express my deepest appreciation, pride and thanks to the members of the CBI Choir: Joan Epstein, Alice Ettinger, Mali Feld, Diana Jay, Byron Kolitz, Gary Levine, Chana Olmstead, Starr Silver, and Phyllis & Sid Werner. They came all summer long to rehearsals and sang their hearts out at High Holyday services this year making our services truly inspirational and joyful. I would also like to thank our High Holyday Torah Readers for their hard work in preparing each Aliyah so superbly: Bernie Marger, Solomon Howard, Melissa Franklin, Daniel Azneer, Dr. Steve LeVine, Jacob Ludin, Yael Reich, Mirit Kagan, Harvey Halprin, Liesa Abel, Sharon Grau, Trish Himmel, Ariel Reich, Liz Sembler, and Zach Sutton. On a personal note, I would like to thank my wonderfully talented and sweet son, Jason, for accompanying me in Havein Yakeir Li on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. I have dreamed of that day since I first held him and sang that melody to him. ‘“Is not Ephraim my precious son? My beloved child.” Even when I rebuke, I remember him with tenderness. My heart yearns for him. I will surely show him compassion” says the Lord.’ Aba and Ima are so proud of you.

During the three Friday Evenings leading up to Rosh Hashanah, and again on Shabbat Shuva, our Kabbalat Shabbat services at CBI were accompanied by guitar. While many Congregants and guests enjoyed the addition of the guitar to our services, a few have raised some thought-provoking questions which inspired me to do additional research beyond what I was taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

During the days of the Temples, over 2000 years ago, there were orchestras that played. We know this because many of the “instruments” that were played are listed in the Psalms. The 150th Psalm (above) is a great example: look at all of the instruments listed. Many Psalms actually list the instrument to be played in the Psalm’s introduction

So what happened to the music? The destruction of the 2nd Temple by the Romans in 70 C.E. had two immediate effects. 1) The loss of the Temple itself ended the ritual sacrifices and the elaborate musical ceremonies that attended them were silenced, 2) The Rabbinic response to the cataclysm was to declare a ban on all music performance as a sign

Our treasured memories. I sure can’t explain why I retain certain memories or why so many involve our wonderful Jewish traditions. But, there they are. As Sukkos approaches, memories come

flooding back, memories of picking fruit from the Sukka at Congregation Rhodeph Sholom in Tampa in the 50’s. I remember listening to the stories of Sukkot the rabbi would tell us of the fall harvest and of a time to rejoice and give thanks. When I had my own family, I can remember helping to build the Sukka and taking my own children there to make their memories of this happy holiday. Now that I’m older, I treasure this holiday as a time to be more appreciative of what each day brings, to being grateful for my health, my family, my friends, and my faith. Last August 20 , at 3:07 a.m., I was blessed with a beautiful and brilliant baby granddaughter, Sarahtia. I know Matt and Toni and the rest of our close-knit family are all ecstatic, but no one as much as “Bubbe.” She is my new best memory, and has already given me much nachas. I will be sharing many Sukkos’ with her and passing on our wonderful Jewish stories and traditions just as our B’nai Israel families do with their children and grandchildren. PROFILE IN LEADERSHIP SERIES Introducing Sidney Werner CBI Member Since 1985

Question 1: Please define yourself. I am the child of a survivor of the

Holocaust. My wife, Phyllis, and I have three remarkable sons, Gerry, Aaron and Bruce, not to mention two wonderful daughters-in-law, Lucy and Sara. I’ve been a lawyer in Pinellas County for over 34 years, and am currently the managing partner of Englander & Fischer, P.A. in St. Petersburg. Some people are golfers, some are tennis players. I enjoy ballroom dancing. Question 2: What’s your role at CBI? I sit on the Executive Committee of the Board, as Second Vice President. Question 3: What is your favorite book or movie or music on your ipod? Why? My favorite book is “Fighting Back: A Memoir of Jewish Resistance in World War II.” It was written by my father, Harold Werner, one of the leaders of the Cheil Greenspan Jewish Partisan group in Eastern Poland. It is my favorite because it will forever provide his descendants with the story of his

From the President heroism and their roots. Question 4: What is your favorite Jewish holiday? Why? Passover, because of the family atmosphere at, and memories evoked by, the seder. Question 5: What values do you try to emulate and pass-on? Affiliation with a congregation, an understanding that change is always in the wind, sometimes for the better, but other times not, and that religion as a set of beliefs will inevitably leave one unsatisfied if it is not incorporated into a lifestyle. Question 6: Who has made the biggest impact on your Jewish life? In an organizational sense that would be Reva Kent, Charlie Rutenberg and Paul Levine. In a personal sense it would be my parents and my wife. Question 7: Which is your favorite Jewish ritual to practice? Is “break the fast” a ritual? Question 8: When do you most feel Jewish? When someone concludes an invocation by saying “In Jesus’ name we pray” or when a Jewish friend orders a pork dish at a restaurant when we are with non-Jewish friends. That may not be the healthiest way to feel Jewish, but it wakes me up to the fact that I am. Question 9: What is your most memorable moment at CBI? When my youngest son, Bruce, dressed up as a fiddler and my oldest son, Gerry, dressed up as a roof, and they marched around the sanctuary during Purim with Gerry carrying Bruce on his back. Question 10: What motivated you to say YES to CBI? As members, we joined because of the outstanding backgrounds of so many lay congregants and the youth group for our kids. If you mean why I am on the Board, it is because the right person asked me. Question 11: What do you do to re-energize? The Mambo.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH

PRTT will not meet on Sundays, October 4th and 11th because of the Yom Tov’s - Sukkot and Simhat Torah. Come to services as a family and enjoy these festive holidays. Our Family Sukkot Lunch is Sunday,

October 4th. Classes will meet on Sundays, October 18th and 25th and on all Tuesdays in October: 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th.

The children and parents of all Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah will participate in the CBI Families Shabbaton on November 13th and 14th. The theme this year will be about our great Jewish tradition of giving. As a people, we have always been the leaders in helping others and protecting the glorious gifts we have been

given. Our traditions of Tikkun Olam (repairing our world), Tzedakah (charity) and G'milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness) have been a mighty beacon through the ages.

Our students are excited about being able to share some of the lessons they have been learning--in prayer and song--with all of our CBI Families.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just study in a classroom. It is essential that our students have regular synagogue experience on Shabbat that interests and inspires them. Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children from the PRTT and Pinellas County Jewish Day School have the opportunity to worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation dates in October are: 17th, 24th, and 31st.

CHANGE IN ACADEMIC SETTING

We welcome children who have changed their academic settings. Please contact the PRTT office for information and a registration form.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL

The Pauline Rivkind Preschool has a unique opportunity to provide the foundation for Jewish learning for all of its young children and their families. We know that quality Jewish learning is the building blocks for strong Jewish identities. From the time our children and families enter the preschool, they begin a wonderful journey through the year that follows the Jewish calendar of holidays. They learn the joy and excitement of each holiday through hands on experiences. Our classrooms and halls are filled with Jewish life. When school began, it was time to celebrate the birthday of the world, Rosh Hashanah. When the school year ends, it will be Shavuot, when Moses receives the Ten Commandments at Sinai. Each month, each week, each day, Pauline Rivkind Preschool makes Judaism accessible to all our families, no matter whether they were raised with little Jewish knowledge or in an observant family. We practice the Jewish value of Hachnasat orchim – being good hosts – and make everyone feel welcome at Pauline Rivkind Preschool. YOUTH DEPARTMENT

The year is off to a great start and once again laughter fills the Youth Lounge. Kadima opening event was a huge splash, literally! They enjoyed a BBQ, swimming and learned about Kadima and were updated on current events in Israel. They heard from some of the USY board members about the responsibilities of their board positions and then held elections for 2009-2010 Kadima Council. Mazal Tov to Jack Sutton, president; Reva Halprin, vice president; William Gross, 8 grade rep.;Jared LeVine, 7 grade rep; and Lilly Kosoff 6 grade rep. Halutzim had their opening event Sunday, September 13. The kids enjoyed lunch and then went to the courtyard to enjoy activities lead by Pathfinders Outdoor Adventure. While they enjoyed games and water play they also learned how to work together as a team and become good sports! Hebrew High is in full swing and Wednesday, September 16 the USYers enjoyed pizza and salad as we kicked off our first Dine and Dash. Todah Rabah to Dr. and Mrs. Hugh Van Gelder for sponsoring this Dine and Dash. If you would like to sponsor a Dine and Dash in the future please let me know. For only $36.00 you can honor a special occasion or for not reason at all! We all are busy and our children are pulled in so many different directions. I know you will be faced with tough decisions on where your children should spend their time. Should they come to a youth event, services, Shabbat or Yom Tov program, and football or hockey game? My experience, as a parent and member of this Synagogue family, has showed me when you are part of a community you will never walk alone. That is something to be treasured!

As the new 2009-2010 SPUSY (St. Pete USY) Chapter President, I am extremely excited to be writing my first column in the Bulletin. I am eagerly looking forward to this coming year! We will be having some awesome events this year and I cannot wait. I hope everyone has had an incredible summer and is ready to jump back into the realm of books and tests.

As the High Holidays come to a close, we get ready to jump into a great month including USY Shabbat and even our, first of the year, Mercaz Sub-Regional Convention.

On August 23rd we had our USY kickoff event, the 4th annual SPUSY Jewau. It was a great success and we had a blast introducing our incoming freshman and hanging out by the pool. Special thanks go out to the Halprins for hosting this event and to Sandy and all the USYers who showed up to make it extra special.

We also got the chance to host Chapter President’s Weekend, August 28th, which was an amazing experience to be able to involve the synagogue in. This past month we had our Youth Open House showing off our new renovated youth lounge. Thanks to Sandy for putting so much hard work into working on it all summer.

Also this past month, we got to install our new Board members making our positions official. Later that night USY helped to set up the shul for the high holidays. Everyone who helped with that is much appreciated.

This year, USY is returning to Junior Congregation. Some of our USYers have stepped up and offered to lead the Junior Congregation services; so thank you to all USYers who have volunteered. This past month has been a great success and I know this coming month will be just as great, if not better!

BUNS FAMILY LIBRARY

We would like to tell you about some marvelous new books that we have purchased for our collection. Please look for them in the New Acquisitions section. They are:

Sarah’s Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay, a fictionalized account of the roundup of French Jews in Paris during the war;

My Father’s Paradise: A Son’s Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq, by Ariel Sabar (extremely well written!); and

Losers and Keepers in Argentina by Nina Barragan - short stories re: Jewish immigrants in North and South America.

We also have two recent books by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin: Jewish Literacy, and A Code of Jewish Ethics vol.2. and

by Alan Dershowitz we have added The Case Against Israel’s Enemies: Exposing Jimmy Carter and Others Who Stand in the Way of Peace.

We hope you will take the time to search them out along with many other wonderful volumes in our library. We have had to cancel the November 15 movie due to a scheduling conflict, but hope to start our Library film series on Wednesday, January 13. Meanwhile the Jewish Film Festival will be showing some terrific films at our synagogue in September and December. Enjoy!

CBI-HADASSAH BOOK CLUB

The CBI-Hadassah Book Club meets monthly on Wednesdays at 10:00 am In the Buns Family Library to discuss current literature of Jewish content. If you are interested in leading the discussion for a meeting, contact CBI Librarians, Dr. Ruth Lebowitz or Janet Augenbraun. BOOK REVIEW: REFUGE DENIED by Scott Miller, Sarah A. Ogilvie

Books about the voyage of the "St. Louis" are many but Refuge Denied uncovers the human stories of the Jewish refugees who sought a safe haven from Nazi Germany. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum felt it had a special interest and responsibility to memorialize the victims and survivors of the ill-fated voyage. Sarah Ogilvie and Scott Miller traced the fate of more than 900 German Jewish passengers and as a result were able to assemble stories of those families. Most of the passengers had applied for United States visas and intended to stay in Cuba until their number came up on the quota lists. Other ships had made port in Havana but at this time, whether from greed, political infighting or anti-semitism this ship was not welcome. As they, then, headed for the U.S. the quota system kept them from disembarking and the ship returned to Europe. The American Joint Distribution Committee brokered a solution for the 908 passengers. Two hundred eighty-eight refugees wound up in Britain (the lucky ones), the balance

went to the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Refuge Denied is dedicated to the families,past and present, of the St. Louis. A list of each passenger is included in the book, one of which is a personal friend of mine, Fred Buff, who lives with his wife to this day in Paramus, NJ and had served his country during World War II.

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS Available

Every study conducted by the Council of Jewish Federations over the past 20 years has reached the same conclusion – that there is no substitute for sending one’s child on a Jewish/Israel Experience, whether to a summer program in Israel, or to a recognized Jewish summer camp or program sponsored by a nationally or internationally recognized Jewish/Israel youth organization. Covenant Fund Youth Awards In 1997, the Jewish Federation of Pinellas/Pasco Counties began offering these scholarships and created The Covenant Fund Youth Awards. In the last 12 years we have offered more than 300 scholarships. We are again welcoming applications for the 2010 Covenant Fund Youth Awards. As in the past, there are three different categories of awards: Grade School “sleep away camp” awards for youths in grades 4-8; High School Awards for those in grades nine – 12 and Covenant Fund College Awards (for accredited study only). Scholarships will be Need Based Only. The Jewish Federation will be accepting applications through Friday, January 22, 2010. Collectively, our teens have opted for a wide variety of Jewish/Israel Experience Programs including the USY Israel-Poland Pilgrimage, the Machon in Israel Program, the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), Camp Ramah, Camp Coleman, etc. The guidelines include the option of attending recognized Jewish Summer camps in North America or Jewish Experience programs such as March of the Living. Kiddush luncheon in their honor to follow.

The festival of Sukkot reaches its joyous climax on Simhat Torah, which is the last day of the Holiday. It is the happiest holiday of

the Jewish calendar because we celebrate our joy and pleasure in Torah.

Because of Israel’s love of the Torah, a tradition evolved in ancient times to honor three individuals for their commitment to the

Torah, to the Synagogue, and the Jewish way of life. On this day we read the last portion of Deuteronomy and then the first portion of

Genesis.The individual called to the Torah when the last section of Deuteronomy is read is called Hatan or Kallah Torah. The individual

called for the reading of the first portion of Genesis is called Hatan or Kallah Bereshit. The individual honored with the chanting of the

Maftir on this day is called Hatan or Kallah Maftir. We continue this year the tradition at Congregation B'nai Israel of St. Petersburg to

assign these portions to individuals who, because of their devotion to Judaism and their record of service to the Synagogue and the Jewish

Community, have merited public tribute.

Alan Gross, our Hatan Torah, Alan Gross has held the positions of treasurer and president of CBI and the CBI Mitzvah Men’s

Club, and was the past president of the Florida region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. He was honored as Mitzvah Men’s Club

Man of the Year. He has also chaired the Membership, Finance, Nominating and Auction Committees for CBI.

In the community, he is the past treasurer of Florida Child Wish Come True Inc., and the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation.

Professionally, for the St. Petersburg Bar Association, he was chairman of the tax section and membership chairman. His memberships

include: The Florida Bar, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public

Accountants, Inc. He also is a charter member of the Suncoast Estate Planning Council. He received the St. Petersburg Bar Pro Bono

Award and has been included in the Martindale Hubbell Bar Register of Prominent Lawyers.

Alan is a former shareholder with Battaglia, Ross, Dicus and Wein, P.A., as well as Powell, Carney, Gross, Maller and Ramsay, P.A.

He currently is president of Alan M. Gross, P.A.

Married to Araceli Gross since 1995, the couple has two children, Kathleen Kennedy and William Gross.

Jack and Marilyn Goldberg, our Hatan and Kallah Bereshit, attended their first Shabbat service at CBI in 1977, after moving

to St. Petersburg from Pennsylvania. Over the years, they have woven themselves into the fabric of CBI life.

Marilyn volunteering spans synagogue activities, Sisterhood and Hadassah. She volunteers at the Sisterhood Gift Shop and

Menorah Manor and is involved with the Gemilut Hasadim, the flower fund, flower cards, and the annual Gift and Craft Show. In 1999,

she was honored by Sisterhood as a Woman of Achievement. Marilyn has been married to Jack for “58-3/4 years.” They have ushered

at the Mahaffey Theater for 15 years, and attend almost every Shabbat service, serving as ushers and participating.

Jack has assisted in the construction and dismantling of the Sukka and the Western Wall; on Mitzvah Day he volunteered to clean

the water behind Menorah Manor in a boat and to accompany Menorah residents on their shopping trip. He has been a member of the

Board of Directors of the Mitzvah Men’s Club, conducts Friday night services once a month at Menorah Manor and has arranged for the

annual Blood Mobile visit to CBI. He has worked at the yard sale, Passover barbeque and serving latkes at Chanukah. Jack was also

honored as Mitzvah Men’s Club Man of the Year in 1997. Jack also serves on the CBI Hevra Kadisha burial society.

Greg and Liz Sembler, our Hatan and Kallah Maftir, have been involved in many aspects of synagogue and community life

since joining CBI in 1986. Liz has served on the CBI Board of Trustees for two years and is currently Secretary of the Congregation, as

well as Shomer during Shabbat morning and Yom Tov Torah services. She was Founding Chair of Mitzvah Day, Ritual Committee Chair

and also teaches at the “Get in Shape” High Holiday and Passover sessions. Greg, CEO of the Sembler Company, has chaired the Building

Committee of the Come Build It campaign.

In the community, Greg currently serves on the Board of Directors of Academy Prep in St. Petersburg, a private, middle school for

children of low-income families, and is a former board member of Phillip Benjamin Tower.

Liz is the Director of Jewish Studies and a teacher at the Pinellas County Jewish Day School. She has served on the Board of

Directors of the national Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and locally, she serves on the boards of public-television station WEDU

and The Florida Orchestra. She is a former board member and campaign chair of the Pinellas County Jewish Federation, winner of the

Edwin N. Ludin Young Leadership Award and the Pinellas County Educator of Excellence Award. Liz is a member of the Advisory Board

of the William Davidson Graduate School of Education at Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.

As a couple, Liz and Greg received the Shin Award from JTS and the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund. They are

proud parents of Jacob, Ezra, Eve, and Benjamin.
