Letter from St Swithun's ChurchIn Search of The Good LifeI t’s amazing that at this stage of my life Ifind I am “trendy”! And No, I have notstarted shopping at New Look. This yearfor the first time I have started growingmy own vegetables and it seems asthough with the credit crunch I am one ofmany doing the same. To those of youwho have been doing so for years youmay wonder what al l the fuss is aboutbut to novices l ike myself we arediscovering the joys of being able to popup to the veggie patch each day and pickfresh all that we need to make anourishing meal. The advantage ofknowing that what we are eating has noharmful additives and at the same timegetting beneficial exercise can only begood news.

And it doesn’t stop there – I recentlyadopted 4 ex-battery hens to make awelcome addition to the garden andattempt to experience, even to a smalldegree, something of The Good Life. This also means I am “in fashion” asmore and more people save thesecreatures from slaughter and help themto enjoy a freedom they have neverknown before. They have proved to bevery rewarding, not only for the deliciousfresh eggs that they kindly supply butalso for their friendly greeting whenever Iapproach them. (I know this may becupboard love but I ’m wil l ing to givethem the benefit of the doubt.)

So I am really enjoying gardening andfind it quite therapeutic but I real ise it’snot always going to be a bed of roses! Iremember reading about a woman wholost her precious engagement ring in agarden. We can only imagine thedistress she felt but the story had ahappy ending when the ring was found

The Bathford Bulletin Page 3

decades later and her joy wasunbounded.

There are many gardens mentioned inthe Bible, including the one where themost precious thing to mankind waslost. In the first chapters of Genesis wehave a picture of man in the paradisecalled Eden, walking and talking withGod, but rather than fol low God’s waysAdam chose to disobey and lost thatpeace and sweet fel lowship with theCreator.

But this story, too, has a happy ending, for in another garden – the Garden ofGethsemane – Jesus, the Son of God,showed a wil l ingness to fol low theFather’s plan of salvation and went tothe cross, where he took on himself thesins of the whole world. In doing so herestored peace and sweet fel lowshipwith God to anyone who would accept itthrough His sacrificial death.

We have an opportunity to thank God foral l his provision, for our bodies, soulsand spirits, as we gather for the HarvestFestival on October 4th at St. Swithun’s.Everyone welcome, look forward toseeing you.

Gill GilbertA Service of ThankgivingA Service of Thanksgiving for the l ives ofthose who have died wil l beheld onSunday 1 November at 6.30pm at StSwithun’s Church. This wil l be a quietservice of reflection with someappropriate hymns. We hope very muchthat the service wil l be an opportunity togive thanks to God for a loved one andto be strengthened by him as wecontinue our l ives. All WelcomeHeather Gillard,Administrator, St Swithuns, Bathford

Prescription DeliveriesThe recent decision by Boots Pharmacyin Batheaston to make deliveries of theirown on Tuesday and Thursdaymornings has caused some disruption tothe delivery service which has beenprovided on a daily basis by Link formany years.

Link is continuing to ensure that anyurgent prescriptions are collected &delivered at the end of each afternoon. However, routine repeat prescriptionsare l ikely to be held over by thepharmacy for delivery by the Bootsdriver and may not, therefore, bedelivered as speedily as before.Unfortunately this decision was madewithout any consultation and is outsideour control.

We suggest that recipients of thisservice order their repeat prescriptionswell in advance of running out to ensureprompt delivery.

Bathford CC The 1st XISeason ConcludesMatch 113 Bathford 1st XI vCorsham 4th XI (25 August)Skipper Steve Vowles won the toss andput the opposition in. With some tidybowling, Corsham did not find battingeasy and were dismissed for 1 49,perhaps sl ightly below par, even on adull day. Martin Gurney and AndrewMurray both took their second 4-wickethauls of the seasons, Murray at lessthan 3 runs/ over. Once the Bathfordreply had begun, the dul lness of the dayturned to dampness and a revised targetof 11 6 in 35 overs was set. I t has provedto be a shame that our chairman JohnBudd's games this year have beenlimited by a knee injury, because hisappearances have been graced by atorrent of runs: 46 not out on thisoccasion. Ably supported by Paul Merrett(39), Budd guided us to 11 7 for 2 - andthus victory.Match 114 Bathford 1st XI vWestbury 3rd XI (8 August)Three wins in a row! Although beaten byWestbury fairly comprehensively in theaway fixture, revenge was comfortablyachieved. The opposition batted first andwere bowled out for 1 40. A second 4-wicket haul of the season being gainedthis time by Steve Ball . though DarrelWatts' 1 2 overs for 11 runs and 3 wicketsdeserve special mention. Then we sawJohn Budd in the runs again. 48 not outthis time, though at a less frenetic ratethan that of player of the season JoeVowles' 47 not out, in taking the total to1 41 for 3.Match 115 Lambourn 1st XI vBathford 1st XI (15 August)We could not make it 4 wins in a rowhowever. Second placed Lambournproved too good for us on the day, albeittheir total - batting first - of 1 54 all outwas by no means out of reach, after

Andrew Murray had taken 5 for 33, thebest bowling figures in the club allsummer long. However, the Bathfordreply was rather restrained with only theredoubtable Andrew Murray findingthings to his l iking in making 61 not out.In the end, we were dismissed for 11 2.Match 116 Burbage & East Royal2nd XI v Bathford 1st XI (29 August)Whilst the previous game (againstLambourn) saw the best bowling of theseason, this game saw the best batting.Batting first, Bathford reached the 208for 6 in 45 overs, of which total no lessthan 1 49 (72%) - or 79%, if extras areexcluded - were scored by our 5th wicketpair of Paul Jackson and Luke Abbott, with their partnership realising 11 5 runs.Abbott fel l just short of his half century at49, but former captain Jackson marchedirresistibly on, to an unbeaten ful l century(1 00 not out), the only individual 3 figurescore achieved this year. Abbott thentook 3 wickets for 45, with newcomerKieron O'Callaghan joining the 4-wicketclub (for 46).The victory in the last game took the 1 stXI to the middle ranking position inDivision 4 of the Wiltshire League: 5thout of 9.L M Mackenzie,Secretary, Bathford CC
