In a radio interview recently, the stand upcomedian Stephen K. Amos was askedwhy there seems to be a renaissance ofhumour in popular culture. He quippedthat it’s because everybody is bored withcookery shows: a retort, with perhaps, more than a grain of truth.

Our household recently laughed loudly atl ines, supposedly taken from GCSEpapers including: ‘Moses went up onMount Cyanide to get the TenCommandments. He died before he everreached Canada’; and also: ‘Eventual ly,the Romans conquered the Greeks.History calls people Romans becausethey never stayed in one place for verylong. ’

And yet, why is it that, at times, al l threemen in my family can be roaring withlaughter and I just can’t see the joke? What we might al l agree on is thathumour enriches our l ives and hearts. I fwe are made in the image of God, ourhumour must point to divine humour andindeed, the Bible says ‘there is a time toweep and a time to laugh’. Laughter ispart of the rich tapestry of l ife and can beused positively in so many ways – toenrich relationships, to entertain, to putpeople at ease, to teach and even todiffuse potential ly difficult situations.

Humour is notoriously difficult to defineand many theories exist. One theory ofhumour notes the use of exaggerationand metaphor and Jesus weaves suchinto his teaching: “Why do you look atthe speck of sawdust in your brother’seye and pay no attention to the plank inyour own eye?” Another theory suggeststhat humour arises when there is anincongruity between what we expect andwhat actual ly happens. Clownsnotoriously make us laugh in this way.Similarly, in the early Christian traditionso called ‘Holy fools’ highl ighted

inconsistencies and hypocrisies ininstitutional l ife, often by ‘playing the fool’or through their own very unconventionalbehaviour. As part of the BathfordFestival St Swithun’s are delighted towelcome a modern, self-styled, ‘holyfool’ , Roly Bain on 1 7th July at the 1 0amService on the Green for al l ages. RolyBain is a clown who has performed allover the world in a circus style. He isalso a priest. We look forward to his mixof laughter and challenge, as well aslearning from him various tricks such asplate spinning after the service.

The Bathford Festival wil l provide uswith further opportunities to enjoy funand laughter together and we lookforward to welcoming you to StSwithun’s for the summer concert ‘CatAmong The Pigeons’ by Bradford onAvon Choral Society on 1 3 July at7:30pm and the church fete on 1 6 Julyfrom 1 2 to 4pm.

With warmest greetings

Jane

Full Parish Council

The Council is pleased to announce thatit now has a ful l complement of 11members. Hugh Baker, Bob Ell iott, PeterMartin and Maureen Mil lbank were co-opted to the Council at the meeting heldon 20 June 2011 to fi l l the vacant seats.A ful l l ist of council lors and their contactdetai ls wil l be displayed on the ParishCouncil notice boards and on thewebsite.

Management of Playing Field

The issue of the level of playing fieldrents was raised by residents at theAnnual Parish Meeting (APM). Therewas concern that users were not beingcharged a market rent. The Council ’sAmenities Committee discussed thismatter at length at its meeting in Juneand considered the policy relating to themanagement of the playing field and rentlevels. The outcome of the AmenitiesCommittee review, which was endorsedby ful l council at its meeting in June, concluded that: -

The aim should be to provide anamenity for the parish rather than anincome stream. The rugby andcricket clubs play their part in the careof the field in many ways as well asproviding a great opportunity foryoung people who want to learn, toplay sport. The Council bel ieves itshould encourage them in their workwith young people

The clubs are paying a rent for use ofthe field on the basis of a fair systemof review each year using the RetailPrice Index (always ‘rounded‘ up).The council sees no reason to changethe current system of review which

was agreed by all parties 8 yearsago.

The Council does not wish to makethe field widely available for ‘outsideuse’. Enquiries from clubs outside theparish have been made, but havebeen refused.

The Council would always charge a‘market value’ figure for any specialcommercial events that may wish touse the field.

The Council would always have theresponsibi l ity for meeting the cost ofmaintaining the field for the benefit ofthe parish and its residents whether itwas used by sports clubs or not. I twas considered far better to have thefield in use and accessible for thebenefit of al l residents.

The Council has included the detai ledresponse in the Bulletin so that residentsare aware that the Council hasconsidered the question raised at theAPM, responded and reached aconclusion.
