What is a Digipak?

The word ‘digipak’ is used to describe any soft, CD packaging. Although they were originally created by MeadWestvaco (trademarked), they became more

popular and were started to be used by more and more manufacturers.

A digipak is commonly used for CD albums or special edition albums from the artists to the fans. Digipaks

typically includes extra content which a basic CD would not. They are usually made from a cardboard/paper back

(book like) case which contains at least two plastic holders which are capable of holding booklets, DVDs and

bonus CDs.

Benefits of a Digipak

Artist: Digipaks helps illustrate the artists genre and star image. As a whole, the digipak will incorporate a theme that represents an artist and makes them appeal to a certain audience. They can also emphasise the creative approach an artist may have to their new image or new music that they are releasing to the public which shows them evolving in the music industry. For example, if the lyrics are futuristic or random, then the whole creative theme of the digipak would be different from lyrics based on ‘partying’ or ‘love’.A digipak benefits the artist and their music from a promotional point of view which helps encourages the consumer to purchase the deluxe copy and support their favourite artist.

Consumer: By creating a digipak, the consumers are given something extra to reward them for being loyal supporters. This encourages them to buy the album as they want to own and access special content that is not included from a CD alone. By being given extra, supporters feel more appreciated by the artists and will be willing to purchase their album.
