At Monday’s assembly, 42 newly trained Year 11
SMILE mentors were introduced to the junior school
and handed their badges and certificates of training.
The SMILE Program, (Support, Mentor, Inspire, Listen,
Encourage), is our student led peer mentoring program.
It has been designed by students, for students. SMILE
assists students in our school to feel that they belong,
that they are recognised and valued as individuals and
have an older, interested person that they can talk to on
a regular basis – it’s a bit like having an older brother or
sister there for you.

From the Principal’s Desk
Parents, students in Years 7 and 8, if you believe that a
SMILE mentor could help you please see Mr Sweed.
We are fortunate to have such a caring
student body. Last week our SMILE
mentors were inducted on a full school
assembly. Each member of SMILE was so
proud to be acknowledged as a SMILE
member and each was looking forward to
making a difference in younger students’
lives. The SMILE initiative is one of our best
support network initiatives at our school.
Many other schools over past years have
taken on our SMILE program and it should
be celebrated each year. Thank you SMILE
mentors.
Parents, students in Years 7 and 8, if you
believe that a SMILE mentor could help you
please see Mr Sweed.
The Elevate Education visit to our school
delivered outstanding study skills, focus and
study techniques to Years 10, 11 and 12.
The parent information session was well
attended and allowed parents the oppor-
tunity to understand how they may help
their children with school work. Overall it
was a very important day in our calendar.
We will run the program again next year.
The Peer Reading Program is one of our
most successful programs. It helps bridge
the gap in reading and comprehension for
many of our lower level readers in Year 7. A
big thank you to our enthusiastic Year 10
mentors. Quality, literary reading is an
important key that all Australians require to
have a successful life.
The school swimming carnival and the zone
carnival were a huge success. Congratulations
to all participants and especially the age cham-
pions as listed in this newsletter.
We have launched the “Say No to Nasty”
program at our school. I regularly talk about it
on our assemblies and it is important that we
stop students being nasty to one another.
We are encouraging bystanders to step in and
call out students being nasty.
Have a great week.
Until next time

This week a Statement of Account has been
mailed to families itemising Voluntary School
Contributions. The 2020 General School
Contribution for junior students is $55 and $65
for senior students. These funds help cover the
cost of textbooks and the many other resources
that are used in the school on a day-to-day
basis.
In addition to the General School Contribution,
Subject Contributions are used to cover other
costs relating to the provision of materials in
specific subjects that students are enrolled in.
These funds enable our school to offer a wide
range of courses, as well as many other wonder-
ful opportunities for students to experience.
In order to assist families, the above contribu-
tions may be paid in full or by instalment.
Payment can be made online at the Woolgoolga
High School website (Make a Payment - POP)
or at our Front Office via cash, cheque or
EFPTOS. Details for making a POP - Parent
Online Payment are outlined on the last page of
the school newsletter.
Where financial hardship exists, families are
invited to contact the Principal or relevant
Deputy Principal to discuss ways to finalise
payments.
Maths Riddle
You have a Math teacher, a student and a bag of lollies.
You want to get across the forum to go out to break but first have to get all
three across to the other side. You can only move one of them at a time!
If you leave the Math teacher with the student, she will give him homework;
if you leave the student with the lollies he will eat them.
How can you get all three across safely?
Please put your answer in the blue box outside the Math staff room, for your chance to win
a $5 canteen voucher.

SMILE originated back in 2011 and has grown in
size and status every year with other schools
introducing their own program based on the
success of SMILE—nearly 50% of our senior
cohort are trained SMILE mentors – a wonderful
tribute to the qualities of our senior students and
the value they see in this program.
Year 7 students wishing to have a SMILE buddy
should approach the Student Support Officer,
Daniel Sweed.
During the training, students learnt the skills of
mentoring, how to develop effective listening and
communication skills, they learnt about child
protection laws and bonded together through
many group activities.
SMILE is contributing so much to establish a
positive school tone at Woolgoolga HS and it
gives the large majority of our Year 11 students
invaluable leadership experiences and
opportunities.
Thanks to the Student Support Officer, Daniel
Sweed for assisting in the training of this group.

On Monday 10 February, we were visited by Callum from Elevate Educa-
tion. He ran sessions for our Year 10, 11 and 12 students during the day
and for staff and parents in the evening.
Students learned about studying, using class time well, time management, memory techniques
and exam preparation.
Parents were given an overview of what was covered with students as well as tips on how they can
support their child with their organisation and time management.
Callum is a second year university student and was very engaging.
“I learned the importance of out of school study.”
“Very good and handy in life.”
“I found this program useful and interesting. I rate it 9/10”
“Putting in a little bit more effort can improve your work heaps.”

On Friday 14 February, 47 Year 10 students volunteered to undertake training as Peer Reading
Tutors for the 2020 school year. These students have committed themselves to working with Year
7 students during home group every day to assist in the development of reading skills.
Strong literacy and reading comprehension skills are vital for success in every Key Learning Area
at school. The Peer Reading Program at Woolgoolga High is a well-entrenched program at the
school and is reflective of the strong school culture of older students helping younger students.
This is also evident in the school’s SMILE Program and the Peer Maths Program.
The students were trained in how to develop a relationship with their younger reading buddy,
understanding what is involved in the reading progress and how to assist students read better by
modelling and questioning. The Year 10 students were trained in child protection issues and partic-
ipated in many role plays in readiness for the program. They will commence reading with their Year
7 partners from next week.
The Peer Reading Program at Woolgoolga High School not only greatly assists the Year 7
students targeted for the program, but also greatly enhances the literacy and language skills of the
Year 10 students, giving them a strong foundation in readiness for the demands of the senior
school, as well as providing initial experiences of working with younger people and providing
valuable leadership skills.

On Tuesday 11 February all of Year 7 students had a wellbeing talk with their Year Adviser,
Mrs Beedie; the Student Support Officer, Daniel Sweed; the School Counsellor, Ms Fenton and the
Head Teacher Wellbeing, Mr Cook. The purpose of this talk was to very clearly outline some of the
school’s policies and procedures in more detail than what they may have been told in Year 6.
Having experienced high school for a few weeks, it was timely for all of Year 7 to be reminded of
their responsibilities to act in a respectful way to all members of the school community. The
school’s Wellbeing Policy was shared with the group and the positives’ awards scheme was
explained – everything from the ‘on the spot’ rewards of ‘Woopi’ tickets to the attainment of Bronze,
Silver, Gold and the School Medallion. The various fields in which staff allocate these rewards on a
term by term basis was also explained.
In addition, the school Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policy was explicitly explained. Students were
reminded of the difference between conflict and bullying and what supports and responsibilities they
have as citizens of this school.
The students were encouraged to be kind to each other and be upstanding in situations where
someone isn’t getting a fair go.
This talk will be followed up in a few week’s time with a second wellbeing talk with Senior
Constable Snow, the school’s Police Liaison Officer. We look forward to all Year 7 students uphold-
ing these expectations at all times.

Valentine’s Day
Year 12 students were spreading the
love with their Valentine’s Day stall.
They enjoyed the fundraising oppor-
tunity. Massive thank you to Taryn
McCarthy for her effort in organising
the event. Congratulations to Ryan
Merrett who won the raffle! Thank
you to everyone who supported the
Valentine’s Day stall.
Saint Valentine was a widely recognized 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Christianity on February 14. From
the High Middle Ages his Saints' Day has been associated with a tradition of courtly love. He is also a patron saint of
epilepsy. Wikipedia

The Woolgoolga High School Swimming Carnival was a success amid a week of wet weather.
Excellent student participation from all four houses made for a fun day of both novelty and competitive
events. As anticipated, the house anthems and teacher relays proved entertaining, whilst Year 12 students
effectively raised funds from their barbeque station.
We look forward to seeing a strong contingent of competitors representing Woolgoolga High School at the
Zone Swimming Championships.
