Getting Out There Day
On Tuesday September 11, Year 12 attended “Getting Out
There Day” at Woolgoolga CeX Club. This day is a dedicat-
ed conference aimed at equipping Year 12 students to
make a successful transition to life beyond school. The
Getting Out There Day has become a traditional part of the
Year 12 students’ wellbeing program at Woolgoolga High
School and it is an event that we are proud to say has been
held every year for the last 22 years.
Special thanks must go to Woolgoolga Rotary Club, the
CeX group of clubs for waiving the fee hire costs for the
use of the club’s facilities, Woolworths Woolgoolga for their
generous donation of morning tea, Gary Maher from Head-
space, Cheryl Midavaine from Woolgoolga Real Estate,
Megan Hart and Karen Dorahy for organising the day.
David Fayle from
Woolgoolga
Rotary Club (the
major sponsor of
this event) spoke
to the students
and encouraged
them to consider
volunteer work in
the future. He
thanked them for
their community
involvement with
many local chari-
ties this year.

There was nothing but positive comments
from Year 12 about the Getting Out There
Day held last Tuesday. Once again I would
like to recognise the importance of working
with our community to prepare our young
people for their productive lives ahead.
The Woolgoolga Rotary Club in particular, is
a major supporter of our school and they
work closely with us to ensure that the Get-
ting Out There Day is a success each year.
Also, as included on the front cover of this
newsletter, I would like to thank the CeX
Clubs, Woolworths, Headspace (Gary
Maher), Cheryl Midavaine from Woolgoolga

Hart and Karen Dorahy for a fantastic day.

From the Principal’s Desk
There was nothing but positive comments from Year 12
about the Getting Out There Day held last Tuesday.
Thank you to everyone involved.
Thank you to our SMILE mentors for making
our Kindness Day one to remember.
Also a special thanks to the students who
fundraised over $600 for Legacy during the
week.
There is plenty of sporting excellence
detailed later in this newsletter. Congratula-
tions to all of our fine athletes.
The Concert of Excellence was outstanding.
I am always impressed by the depth of talent
that we have in our school community.
Thank you to all staff who supported this
event. I had many parents come up to me
during the night and comment on the talent
of our singers, musicians, actors and
dancers. Well done to CAPA and our
students.
Good luck to Year 11 with examinations over
the next 2 weeks.
The Year 12 Assembly will be held on Friday

On Saturday 1 September I had the pleasure of attending
the 30th Rotary Cartoon Awards at the Bunker Cartoon
Gallery. There were hundreds of entries in the six
categories featuring cartoonists from around Australia and
overseas. This year had two additional sections:
international entries and 12 to18 year olds.
One could not help but be impressed with the quality of the
work on show, with many well-known names in attend-
ance.
Lucy Dunning from Year 9 was awarded 2nd
place for her
entry in the 12 to 18 years section. The theme this year
was ‘my smart phone’s broke’. Lucy was presented with a
cash prize for both herself and for the school, which I was
honoured to receive on behalf of Woolgoolga High. Lucy is
a very talented young artist who has demonstrated her
creative talent in numerous areas at school, however, it
was wonderful to see her acknowledged at this level.
Congratulations Lucy!
The exhibition is open to the public until 31 October at the
Bunker Cartoon Gallery, Coffs Harbour.
Lucy Dunning Wins Art Award!
On Thursday 6 September and Friday 7 September WHS volunteered to assist Coffs Harbour
Legacy to collect donations and sell badges as part of Legacy Week.
Ryan Merrett, Kyra Fuller, Emily Mather, Maddi Doherty, Mahlee Hooke, Sasha Smith, Emily White,
Auriel King, Aaron Ballangarry, Jackson Berryman, Matilda Mairinger, Sarah Goodman, Madyson
Cowling, Alex Greenhalgh, Brea Watts and Neo Wood donated 2½ hours of their time to collect
from businesses in the Woolgoolga CBD and industrial area.
They raised in excess of $600. Congratulations to this group of community volunteers.

On Tuesday 4 September, SMILE Mentors held their Kindness Day event, featuring kind-
ness cards along with a BBQ and live music at both breaks.
Mentors invited students to write a kind message to any person in the school, on special
cards provided by SMILE. Students had the option to leave their message anonymous,
which added mystery and selflessness to their message.
Mentors are now in the process of delivering over 500 kind messages written by students and staff.
Celebrating Kindness Day
Congratulations to Woolgoolga High
School students and staff for being so
kind and a huge thank you to SMILE
Mentors for such a successful event.

Since 1996 Woolgoolga Rotary club has sponsored the Getting Out There Day. Without their sup-
port, we would not be able to offer this conference to our graduating class of Year 12.
The day consisted of four workshops, each with a different focus.
Senior Constable Snow, in conjunction with licensed security guard, Judd Jarrett-McKinnon, gave a
cautionary talk about safe and responsible behaviour in licenced premises, drink spiking, drugs and
the law and the prevalence of domestic violence.
Our head teacher of PDHPE, Ms Kath Bear, in conjunction with Gary Maher, from Headspace, ran
a healthy lifestyles workshop with a focus on maintaining good mental and physical health and gen-
eral tips for personal wellbeing.
Cheryl Midavaine from Woolgoolga Real Estate once again advised our Year 12 students about
moving away from home, share accommodation, signing a lease and the legalities and rights of
renting a property.
Our Food Technology and Hospitality teacher, Mrs Donnelly, assisted by Mrs Stockton, gave an
entertaining hands on demonstration of cheap and healthy eating on a budget.

The last week of Term 2 saw the Year 11 Business
Studies students dive headlong into the running of a
realistic business scenario with the annual Market Day.
Held on the same day as the Talent Quest, the activity
gives students the opportunity to experience firsthand the
organisation, hard work and issues that arise from run-
ning a small business enterprise.
The business owners were kept busy on the day with all
the extra responsibility of preparing, cooking, assembling,
serving, spruiking their product along with handling large
volumes of orders, customers and money.
The aim of the day is not profit but experience, and being
able to ‘think on their feet’ to come up with solutions to
problems; being flexible and adaptable; and having fun.
Thank you to the student population for their enthusiastic
support of the day.
Year 11 Business Studies Market Day
Congratulations
to the Business
Studies students
for making it a
huge success.

Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers
Workshop Overview:
Parents and supervisors play a vital role in providing young drivers the experience they need to be
safe on the roads. The Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop has been devel-
oped to help them teach with confidence so they can help learner drivers be safe on the road. The
free two hour workshop includes information about license conditions for Learner and P plate
drivers, tips for using the learner driver log book and the importance of providing constructive feed-
back. The course also reinforces the important role families play in providing ongoing support for
young motorists in their early years of driving. Courses will be held on:

On Wednesday 29 August a group of girls from WHS
went to play in the Regional Finals for Girls League Tag
at Geoff King Motors Oval in Coffs Harbour. WHS was
represented by two teams, the under 14’s and under
16’s. Both of the teams played four games each, against
teams from Port Macquarie to Maclean.
After a few last minute changes to the draw on the day,
due to teams being unable to attend, the under 16’s
girls only had 3 teams in their competition. Meaning
WHS had to play two games against each team. The
girls showed great determination and sportsmanship
throughout all their games, refusing to give up and
continually improving.
The under 14’s draw was impacted less by the changes, the girls played 4 games, each against
different teams. The girls proved they were fierce competitors by winning 3 of their 4 games with
quite convincing score lines. These wins placed the WHS under 14’s girls 2nd
in the region.
Girls League Tag
Well done to all the girls who
were involved in the girls
League Tag this year, all of you
have improved considerably
throughout the year and
demonstrated fantastic team
work and sportsmanship.
Congratulations to you all!
