As with everything, SMILE’s work has been interrupted by COVID-19.
We are here to remind you about SMILE and tell you about our new chat room.
SMILE is a student led program that aims to make school a better place for everyone. SMILE
mentors are senior students who care about their school community…that’s you.
As we grow, we learn… We learn about ourselves, other people.
It’s good to talk to others, to get different ideas about whatever is on your mind.
Or if someone just listens, it can help us process and feel better about ourselves and our life.
As SMILE Mentors, we have our one on one mentoring but there is simply not enough of us to
keep up with demand.
We would like to meet and connect with more of you, so we are starting a new meeting place in
room 17 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In the breaks you can come and meet us and talk about
school, relationships, problems, life; anything really.
We want to meet you, hang out, whatever…You don’t have
to come with a particular problem. Just come and say hi; tell
us what’s good in your life.
You may not want to talk at all; we will also have some
games and activities available.
This is a new thing for SMILE and the school. And,
because SMILE is a program for students, we would love to
hear your ideas of what we can do in our chat room. What
would you like in this room? Do you have any ideas how
SMILE could make school a better place?
So drop in, say hi on a Tuesday or Thursday during breaks.
We are friendly, approachable, and want to meet you.
Hope to see you there.

It is fantastic to be able to run much of our rich
tapestry of curricular and extra-curricular activities
again. Our focus is on what we can do and what
we do well. Woolgoolga High School continues to
deliver a high quality, world-class education to our
students while the additional enriching experiences
are opening up again.
In Term 3, sport will run with an expanded range of
opportunities, once again including venues with
transport options from across our region. Planning
is going ahead for our Woolgoolga High Athletics
Carnival, scheduled for Wednesday 5 August. We
are preparing for the participation of students from
all age groups and of any ability level in track and
field events for a full day carnival. Although further
progression will not occur through Zone, Region
and State as per other years, there is still
enormous benefit in running this great event for
our students. We are all looking forward to great
house spirit, war cries and enthusiastic
participation.
Our Academic Achievement Centre has great
numbers again. It is wonderful to see so many of
our students benefitting from the tuition given by
experts in faculties from across our school. Come
along after school on Thursdays. Everyone is most
welcome.
Mr Dominey is asking for volunteers for the sound
crew, who will work together with specialists in the
field to develop their sound production skills. The
sound crew will run production for all school
events, including future performances such as our
MADD night and the school Musical. Mr Dominey
is also running a drumming group for students of
all ability levels, so see our music faculty if you
would like to be involved.
From the Principal’s Desk
During the break between Terms 2 and 3, our
teaching staff have scheduled HSC tutorial
sessions for their students.
SMILE Chat Room has opened up as a place to
meet. Junior students can drop into Room 17
during break times to say hi to SMILE mentors.
If any junior student would like to find out more
about SMILE and think about having a senior
SMILE mentor, please see their Year Advisor,
Mr Cook, Daniel Sweed or Ms Stockton. See the
poster in this newsletter and around the school.
During the break between Terms 2 and 3, our
teaching staff have scheduled HSC tutorial
sessions for their students. This is an excellent,
rewarding opportunity to engage deeply in the
content, working with their teachers and fellow
students. To be able to devote as much time and
support as needed is perfect at this time of the
HSC. Seniors need to check the schedule and talk
to their teachers and Mr Pursch. The Academic
Achievement Centre on Wednesday afternoons
continues to be staffed with senior curriculum
specialists from across the school. This is in place
specifically for Preliminary and HSC students.
Make the most of it!
Thank you to the wonderful parents and carers in
our school community who always work together
with our brilliant staff to create the best possible
experiences for the students of our school. Stay
safe and keep in touch with what is happening at
this fantastic school, Woolgoolga High School.

Attention parents and carers
Borrowed WHS devices
As our classes have transitioned quickly into face-to
-face learning, we require any borrowed technology
to be returned to the school. This will help us facili-
tate your children's learning. These devices need to
be returned to the front office. If there are any
issues in respect to this request please contact the
school administration office on 66541500
Safety First
Parents, carers and students are reminded not to use the staff car park for
dropping off or picking up their children, unless using the disabled parking bays.
Our car park is very congested, especially on rainy days directly before school begins and after school finishes.
Parking is available at the front of the school for safety and a covered walkway for students’ convenience leads from
the bus bay into the grounds.
Mobile Phones
Please do not call or message
your child during class time.
If it is an emergency call the office on
6654 1500 or leave it until break time —
11.10am-11.40am and 1.40pm-2.10pm.
Asthma
Students who require an asthma
puffer please ensure they bring it
to school and have it on their
person at all times. This is
extremely important during the
winter season.

? Mary and Kim decide to walk home from
school a different way each day. By doing
this they hope to avoid meeting the scary
neighbourhood cat Scar!
The map shows all the streets between the
school and where Mary and Kim live.
If they don't want to walk back towards the
school, how many different ways are there?
Hint: Try writing at each vertex the number
of ways they can get there.
Remember to put your answer in the blue box outside the maths staffroom for your chance to win a
$5 canteen voucher!
The answer to last week's riddle was 2, 5 and 7. The winner of that $5 canteen voucher will be announced in
assembly on Monday.
Maths Riddle
In Maths, the Year 8 students are starting to learn about
number planes; how to plot coordinates on a graph and
the properties of linear problems.
This week some Year 8 students created a life-sized
number plane in the Forum. The students investigated a
range of different number plane properties such as the
different quadrants of a number plane. They also plotted
themselves and then connected the points to form a linear
line and finally arranged themselves into a spiral shape
and recorded their coordinates. Back in the classroom,
the students checked the correct points were recorded by
plotting these coordinates on a graph.
Taking maths out of the classroom and creating different
learning activities and experiences helps students learn
difficult concepts and develops a solid understanding of
mathematical principles. We are trying to inspire our
students to love maths just as much as all the staff in the
Maths faculty do!

Students in Year 7 Tech Mandatory
have been experimenting with dyeing,
learning new skills such as ironing, pin-
ning and using a sewing machine to
construct a tote bag. They have also
been learning about regulations that
must appear on labelling of textile items.
Year 7 students have completed a writ-
ten task on what the world would be like
without textiles.
Year 7 Tech Mandatory
What Would Life Be Like Without Textiles? - Keziah Friend
Without textiles life would be hard, boring and uncomfortable. Most of our daily life items are
textiles. Textiles are almost essential to live life the way we do. Textiles makes our life comforta-
ble, easy and interesting.
Can you imagine cold winter nights without textiles? How horrible would it be to sleep without a
warm doona or blankets and to have no soft pillow and mattress to rest your body on. Think
about getting out of a nice warm shower and having no towel to wrap yourself up in. Then going
to bed in a cardboard box or some other uncomfortable material. A winter night would be a
dreadful nightmare.
What if we had no textiles in school? We would probably all be carrying our books in plastic
bags. Also imagine moving from class to class in bulky, uncomfortable material. Without textiles
school would probably become more than twice as hard.
These were only two parts of our daily life and it already looks like a disaster! Imagine no textiles
for anything! Life would become so hard and our whole way of living would change. No textiles
would also most likely result in more plastic which would make the world become damaged
quicker. Living without textiles in general is a pure catastrophe!

A World Without Textiles—Ava Wilson
A world without textiles would not only be irritating but extremely impractical. Without textiles,
many problems and troubles within our everyday lives would be created.
Picture this, you wake up from a painful night's sleep and get up off your hard, plastic bed. To get
ready for the day, you grab your cold fork to brush through your mangled hair, and put on your
fragile paper clothes. This kind of lifestyle alone is difficult and would drive you mad!
Another problem we have to think about, is the long, cold and icy winter nights. There would be no
fluffy, long sleeve pyjamas, no compfy slippers or warm blankets. But worst of all, you wouldn’t be
able to snuggle up in your nice, warm bed and sleep all through the night.
Imagine if you got your skin cut open or got injured. You would need a cloth, band aid or bandage
to help stop the bleeding and help recover the injury. Without textiles it would be an even more
painful experience than it already is, as well as helping people and possibly saving lives.
We use textiles every single day and frequently take it for granted. Even just from these reasons,
we can see the benefits of textiles and why it is so essential to our society.
